some charity work there. jeff joins us with more on their story. >> reporter: well kelly, emily kerr stadder and her grand mother were supposed to return from uganda last week, but they were having so much fun helping an adidn'ted church there, they elected to stay, putting themselves in harm's way. tragedy strikes with simultaneous taken just blasts at two sites in uganda's capital, including a church site, where u.s. missionaries received injuries. the most seriously injured, 16- year-old emily kerr stadder from el cut city. >> we're getting mixed stories, i'm not sure about emily, they are getting ready to medivac her to johansberg where they'll do further testing and we'll get a better prognosis. she obviously had some injury from the blast and grandmother broke an arm, which they have taken care of, so that she can travel with emily to johansberg. >> reporter: she had accompanied her grandmother, joanne and other members of the christ united methodist church in pennsylvania to help members of an adopted church in come pal a. >> as sad as it is in our world the reality is this can happen anywhere and at any time. >> reporter: emily attends the mount desails academy in catonsville and we're told it was her friends here who helped her to raise $4,000 for her charitable mission to africa. they say the teen and her grandmother called home last week asking to extend their stay until this week saying they were having a wonderful time. the last night of their stay they had set their sights on something special. >> they were in an heene opennan restaurant just gathering for the world cup and probably one of their last dinners there and just having a great time. i had just heard emily had just mentioned she was having a great time and didn't want to leave. >> reporter: the u.s. state department and the f.b.i. have cut through the red tape arranging for emily's parents to catch a flight to join their daughter in johannesburg. >> it's very surreal right now, i don't think we believe it's happening. just from talking to emily and reading the blog site and it's just, it's not believable right now, so -- so mom and dad just want to get there and be with her and do what they can to help her. >> reporter: mount tee sails academy is planning a prayer service for emily and the other victims. it will be held at 1:00 in the afternoon in catonsville. jeff haeger, abc of a marine outside a mt. vernon nightclub. he was arrested for shooting tyrone brown to death. brown was shot 12 times. tshamba's lawyer says his client stepped in after brown started groping a woman who was not his girlfriend. he supposedly identified himself as a cop. brown's family says he threw up his hands and walked away but the officer's attorney said his client fired because he felt he had no choice. now if convicted he faces a maximum extents of life in prison. tonight more charges against a registered sex offender police say lured 4 teenaged girls from dunn doc to annapolis. he said he actually had sex with a second girl, a 14-year- old. according to police mason picked up four teenaged girls between the ages of 13 and 15 from a home in the 8,000 block of strategy man road in dunn doc. he then drove them to a residence in the 1500 block of st. margaret's drive. he bought them alcohol and offered them marijuana supposedly when they arrived at the home one have the teens started to feel uneasy about the situation and texted a family member. that family member called police. mason faces several charges including second degree rape. boys hope/girls home has been in our area less than 10 years but it has already had an impact in the lives of dozens of young people. the bodies home is just down the street from where the new girls home is being built. roosevelt leftwich spent part of the afternoon there and joins us now. >> many people are growing up in difficult sings. is boys hope home has helped arm young men with the tools they need to survive in difficult circumstances and also to survive in life. >> hi ho, high low, it's off to work we go. >>sing a volunteers troop up to work on the new girls home they go past the boys home. eight youngs men eat, sleep and worry about homework together all under one roof. >> i think that being here, you know, has definitely added on to my well-rounded necessary and has provided me with the chance to go on, you know, as well as provided multiple opportunities for me to basically explore my horizons. >> reporter: matt green hill is the oldest scowler 17 schools in 7 states and being home less, he found a place where life is normal. >> we all sit together as a family and eat dinner. that's a pretty big thing i would say. i mean most families today don't do that, i mean it's definitely a good thing just to be able to know what's going on with everybody else. even talk about, you know, current events and things like that. >> reporter: simple things like knowing where your next meal will come from and someone cares and has expectations and hopes for you goes a long way to build character and the desire for success. the boys hope/girls hope homes have provided that stability with an open arms approach. giving guidance, direction, hope, love, expectations, and of course chores. >> once you're back at the home it's about managing their academics, their cleaning of their room, preparation for dinner, they may be assigned to the dining room where they are helping out whoever is cooking dinner for that evening, set the table, put out the food. what we try to do is create a program where somebody really wants to get into but they really know it's a program about accountability based on the issue of values and character building. >> reporter: for the 90% of the young men who have been in this house have done on to college and doing great things in their life. matt hopes to follow in their footsteps. >> you don't choose your family. all the guys we have here i look at as my brothers so that's basically where he is, yeah. guys, they sometimes get on your nerves, sometimes you get on their nerves, sometimes guys like to fight, help play, it's like any other family i guess. >> reporter: now matt starts his senior year at archbishop curly. he is stuck, he is trying to decide between prelaw and premed with an ultimate goal to being a united states senator. good collision in philadelphia last week. the national transportation safety board says in the minutes before the barge slammed in the duck boat radio calls from a boat interest unanswered. the deck hands meat and the duck boat say they received no response. the boat appears to have had a mechanical problem that left it in the path of that barge. it flipped and dumped some 35 passengers and two crew members into the deals river. two people were killed. tonight, what could be the beginning of the end of the gulf oil spill. a new metal cap, 18 feet high and 150,000 pounds, is being maneuvered into place atop the blown-out well a mile under water. now, if it works -- and we won't know yet for two more days -- it should bottle up almost all of the millions of gallons of oil dark engineer the gulf each day. here is john hendrik. >> reporter: the latest cap is supposed to capture most or all of the leaking oil within the week. >> we're going to put a containment cap on the well and then we're gonna slowly start closing the valves associated with the oil that's coming out of it. >> reporter: as bp tests the pressure of that leak the obama administration is optimistic. >> we're certainly hopeful that over the course of the next several days they'll get that on, they'll get that tightened appropriately, and the containment capacity that i just described will increase in a way like we haven't seen thus far. >> reporter: as that cap is put into place a new oil collection vessel, the helix producer, is starting to take inasmuch as a million gallons of crude a day and with other vessels up to 3 1/2 million gallons. >> we're going to be very close to containing 100% of the oil. >> reporter: that first relief well, the best hope of relieving the pressure for good, is only 5 feet away from the underwater well. preparing to use cement to fill it and kill it. even if it works across the gulf most of the damage has been done. >> in may you're goin' "they'll get it capped off, it might not be that bad," now it's a reality, it is that bad. >> reporter: and until the oil stops flowing it's only going to get worse. john hendrik, burriss, louisiana. >> the damage totals are mounting, so bp is looking for a way to cover the cost of all the compensation it will have to payout to residents and businesses along the gulf coast. they appear to be in talks to sell off some of its assets to fund some of those payouts and it may sell its alaska oilfields to the u.s.'s largest independent oil company apache oil. the stock has fallen some 44% since april. we have told you afternoon, this heavy downpour is creating some briefly flooded roads actually in some of the urban runoff areas. 74 the current temp. that's a beautiful cy effect of a passing round of showers and storms on a july day. earlier we were up close to 90 in most spots, show you those in just a second. but i do want to show you a couple of shots across the area, relatively cloudy and murky out there at the inner harbor, take a look at dc, getting steadily unsettled and a brief heavy downpour, that's what we saw, early sunshine, cloudy, hazy, then thunderstorms certainly rolling in out there for us. highs in the mid-80s for the most part, 88ies ton, 88bwi, closer to 90 downtown before the storms cooled things down. 84 from dulles today, these are much more seasonable and enjoyable high temperatures, look at the current temperatures. we're down to 74 at bwi, 782 at york, philly still warm at 87 andies on the at 82. humidity high, one of the things we get with these brief downpours, especially after a hot start to the day, showers and storms actually will up the humidity level, we'll see dewpoints close to 80 down at ocean city and delmarva, 68 at baltimore, pretty darn humid conditions, so at least the temperatures enjoyable because the humidity certainly is high. you can see that line of showers and storms, these are not severe any more, at one point we did have some severe thunderstorm warnings, baltimore city, baltimore county. right now these things are quieting down, really becoming heavy downpours with some wind and also lightning at times, take you out a little wider here, you can see the setup here, up and down the east coast. this area of thundershowers and storms the first of several. we expect to see one or two lines through the night tonight and through the day tomorrow. unsettled pattern, active subtropical jet stream over the mid-atlantic. it's also interacting with a boundary, this isn't a cold front but a bit of a divide on the air masses helping to spark those showers and storms. area of low pressure coming out of michigan. sort of the perfect res peas for a big change in the weather pattern, a hot sunshine we had, now into much more of a wet weather scenario. forecast tomorrow, expecting more showers and storms to erupt about 2:00 p.m., any time after lunchtime. they could linger around through 6:00 so the commute could be wet again tomorrow, overthrew the eastern shores we could see showers linger, looks unsettled, wednesday a hit or miss shower so less rain as we go with the mid-week. 72, humid, a little cooler, a few thunderstorms possible overnight. tomorrow we're talking about 87, mostly cloudy, tomorrow night still the chance for showers and storms especially to the east. let's show you a quick check of the seven-day forecast, again the trend is for upsetled weather throughout the day tomorrow, in the day tuesday. but as we look into the middle part of the week here, sunshine will be the story, see you in a few. vitamin d plays an important role in providing against a wide range of age diseases. but low levels of vitamin d may be associated with a higher risk of dementia. here is abc's dr. timothy johnson. >> reporter: vitamin d plays an important part in bone health, our immune system, yet nearly a billion people worldwide do not have sufficient levels of the vitamin in their body. accord to go a new study by researchers at the university of exeter insufficient vitamin d levels may be an early warning sign freedmen shall. 850 people were placed in the study and had their cognitive function assessed. in comparison to those who had healthy straight a min d levels people who were severely deficiency in the vitamin were 60% more likely to experience substantial mental decline and 31% more likely to experience problems with mental flexibility. vitamin d is produced naturally when skin is exposed to unlight. as people age, however, the skin is less capable of producing the essential vitamin. dementia and other cognitive problems are common the older adults but right now there are few options for prevention and treatment. researchers would like to conduct
