government at hand. also ahead this half hour, the strengthening storm system name irene. she's already flooded parts of the caribbean and is causing problems in puerto rico as well. a potential we'll see how that works out. the latest from libya as rebels take control of that country's capital. they're celebrating victory in tripoli's main square this morning. after a closely coordinated plan between the rebels, nato and residents inside tripoli who secretly had armed themselves. >> two of gadhafi's sons are now in custody but the whereabouts of gadhafi himself are unknown and there are still pockets of resistance in the country. >> as word spread to the u.s. about this group of about 50 libyan-americans gathered outside the white house to celebrate. among their chants, "not gadhafi, not his son, all of libya is one." as the president vacations on martha's vineyard, he's been kept up to date on the unfolding drama. after being briefed by his security team mr. obama called for gadadfi to step down and pledged u.s. support for that growing democracy there. >> the rebel fighters' journey to the capital city over the past 24 hours was both emotional as well as truss. >> stop the rebels as they stormed toward tripoli. the bb increase's rupert winfield hayes was with the opposition. >> reporter: there's no doubt where these rebels think they're going. to tripoli. on the road ahead, discarded uniforms from gadhafi's soldiers who have fled minutes before. six months ago these were students and electricians, even dentists. now they are united by one thing. why are you so happy? >> because we're going to dig this bastard out from wherever he is. >> reporter: as they advance, the flags are changed. the rebels are welcomed as liberators. but the optimism is misplaced. suddenly, everyone is running for cover. bullets whizzing overhead. the rebels are taking casualties. and it's time for us to heave. the rebels are now in retreat. but it doesn't last long. this is what we found just 18 miles from the center of tripoli. this military base belonged to one of colonel gadhafi's most elite units. it's in the hands of rebels and looters. the feared brigade has disappeared. rupert winfield hayes, bbc news, on the road to tripoli. >> it was six months ago that abc's christiane amanpour got the first interview with gadhafi since that uprising began. back then the libyan leader sounded a defiant note. >> colonel gadhafi, the president of the united states, the leaders of britain and other leaders, are calling on you to step down, to leave libya, to leave your position of power. will you do that? >> who would leave his homeland? why do i leave my homeland? why do i leave libya? >> they say they've done it because you have ordered force against your people, shooting of protesters. >> translator: this is lying, 100%. >> apparently he has not been seen recently but he's let out a series of recorded audio messages. in them he still even now is defiant even as his regime seems to be on the brink of collapse. he called all his loyalists to rify the city of the rats, meaning the rebel protesters. it's clear his time is almost up for sure. >> though he still says, as he said, defiant and saying he will not back down. it will be interesting to see if he does leave. he's been vowing he will not leave tripoli. >> exactly. rumors whether he's brink of becoming the first hurricane of the season. >> and this morning puerto rico is bearing the brunt of it as the storm continues to move west. jeanetnette calle is tracking irene in the accuweather forecast center. >> all eyes on the tropics. here is irene. making its way across puerto rico. heavy downpours right now across puerto rico and this system will slowly continue to push off to the west. there is the potential that irene could impact the south coast of the florida peninsula late in the week. we'll get to that just ahead. first off, throughout the day today, the worst of irene will be felt on the north coast of puerto rico and thehe dominican republic. torrential rainfall and gusty winds. maximum sustained winds could reach anywhere from 74 to 95 miles per hour, along with rough surf. now thursday, anywhere between miami and the northwest coasasof the bahamas, that's where we could be talking about category 1 or category 2 hurricane irene. schools and most government offices are closed across puerto rico today and many other caribbean islands are trying to cope with the flooding irene left behind. heavy rain swamped low-lying areas. and the storm passed directly over the u.s. virgin islands and st. croix, knocking out power to thousands. a soaker from carolina. showers, thunderstorms and dangerous winds around omaha, sioux falls and st. louis. rain in the pacific northwewe and desert southwest. scorching heat continues across texas. >> 104 in dallas. 87 in omaha. 83 in the twin cities. 81 here in new york. 94 in atlanta. 70s in seattle and portland. boise hits 94. and sacramento 87. police in san francisco are looking for witnesses to several violent incidents at candlestick park this weekend. two men were shot and wounded in the parking lot after the preseason game between the 49ers and the raiders. a third man was hospitalized after an attack in a stadium bathroom. while videos of other fights between fans have been cropping up on youtube. it was a devastating weekend for air shows. three times spectators watched as high flyers defied gravity. three times they watched in horror as planes and their occupants fell out of the sky. abc's barbara pinto has the details. we do caution you some of these pictures are pretty disturbing. >> reporter: with thousands watching, a stunning tragedy. the stunt plane plummets, exploding in flames. >> lane, we have emergency personnel -- >> dear god, please be with his family. >> reporter: k kling veteran pilot brian jensen. >> we knew there was no way he was going to sururve that, unfortunately. it was a bad thing. >> reporter: jensen had logged 23,000 hours in the cockpit. if his acrobatic plane,een her on his website, and as a 747 captain for delta. his death comes just hours after this fatal crash at an air show in england. and another tragedy near detroit. an aerial stunt man walking on the ring of a low-flying plane fell 200 feet to his death. the drama and death-defying stunts are what draw an estimated 12 million spectators to these air shows every year. chicago's air show, aria and his family turn a cautious eye to the sky. >> you have concern for people on the ground, also concern for the safety of the pilots. they're flying pretty close at times. >> reporter: the pilots who perform these aerial acrobatics are experts, heavily trained and certified every year. in kansas city the air show went on with a grim reminder of the risks. a memorial to pilot brian jensen. planes flying in missing man formation, leaving an empty space in the sky. aviation experts tell us there have been no spectator fatalities in american air shows in more than 50 years. and despite three tragic incidents this weekend alone, they say the safety record for day and you don't survive a crash like that. >> young kids out there, one woman in michigan had a difficult time consoling her 7 and 11-year-old boys who just watched this man died. the two-week strike by verizon workers is over. but their contract dispute remains. thousands of union members decided to head back to work while they continued to negotiate with verizon. but there are major issues to be negotiated, including health care benefits, pensions and work rules. >> can you hear them now. a sensible person would not call a sailing race in key largo a regatta. entrants compete in homemade boats made of everyday materials and powered by human energy. >> the fastest boat, the golden jugs, named they say after the plastiti bottles their boat was made of. >> sure. >> not after the >> no, they're not. they're full-time jobs with overtime and growtwt >> reporter: new businesses and thriving old ones. the 120-year-old dr. pepper bottler in dublin, texas. >> i think this country's built of entrepreneurs. >> reporter: but there is another side of that texas spirit. a story rick perry is less likely t ttout out on the campaign trail. his state leads the way in low-wage jobs. almost 10% of the employed making minimum wage or less, compared to 6% nationwide. with the poverty rate of 17%, texas is among the 10 poorest states in the nation. >> we havee the highest percentage of people w whout health insurance. we do very little to support people who aren't making it. >> reporter: deep cuts in education help balance the budget. and the divide between rich and poor is the fourth widest in the country. some argue that deep in the heart of rick perry's texas, there is little heart. jim avila, abc news, san antonio. >> something i think his opponents will quickly point out is what jim just reported. the ten poorest states in the nation, texas is one of them. these are primarily low-wage paying jobs we're talking about. >> of course. the money is coming through the oil and gas industry. the question there people have said is, what role did the governor himself play in creating those jobs? >> this pits two food titans, both with big audiences for their own tv shows. ring the bell. >> reporter: in this corner, anthony bourdain, the harshly outspoken new york chef whose commentaries have as much bite as his food. in the opposing corner, paula deen, the queen of southern cuisi cuisine. these two culinary stars have taken a break from stuffing their mouths to spit out a little trash talk. bourdain, who's an author and tv food star himself, sliced and diced deen in a recent interview with "tv guide" saying she is the worst, most dangerous person to america. she revels in unholy connections with evil corporations and she's proud of the fact that her food is bleeping bad for you. plus her food sucks. ever the southern belle, deen fired back with a mix of sweet and spice. >> i don't know if it was a publicity thing or if somebody had just peed in his bowl of cereal that morning and he was mad interior deen, one of the food network's biggest stars, admits she has never even met bourdain or cooked for the acid-tongued chef who she said needs to get a life. >> listen, come to my house, i'll cook you a meal. if you still feel that way about me, so be it. >> reporter: bourdain also took his knives out against other food network stars. rachael ray, sandra lee, and guy fee yare re. he saved his saltiest slams for deen. he lowered the heat a little bit later on twitter, admitting that she's not the worst person in america, just the most destructive influence on the food network. with tension still simmering, maybe e 's time for deen and bourdain to leave the ring and save all this hehe for the oven. >> what do they say? green square last night it was a scene of celebration. >> unbelievable events unfolding the last 36 hours. we'll have the very latest. also ahead this half hour, dangerous violence at a san francisco giants game. fans fighting in the stands and in a restroom. we'll have the latest on the injuries and whohos responsible. later this half hour the remake of a 1985 scary movie "fright night." colin farrell costars in the vampire nick. we'll get our take coming up in "insomniac theater." we begin with that breaking news overnight. a big story here, new details as rebels take control of libya. they chanted "it's over frizz head," using a mocking nickname for soon to be ousted leader gadhafi. >> the rebel victory was the culmination of a closely coordinated plan by rebels, nato and anti-gadhafi residents inside libya. we begin our coverage with abc's jeffrey kofman who's been watching the story unfold inside the libyan capital. >> reporter: this is the moment so many libyans have been waiting so long to see. this revelation has taken six months but for many it is a matter of waiting their entire lives, 41 years of the gadhafi regime, and it is over. crumbling as we speak. the rebel forces and their supporters now running freely in green square in the heart of tripoli. they're taking over government buildings. among the very dramatic moments that led up to this, islam, the most powerful son of gadhafi, was arrested late sunday night. the one question that is not clear, where is gadhafi himself and what will happen to him? for many, that is academic. because he clearly no longer controls this country. people from hill towns like this hopping in their cars, heading to tripoli to celebrate. something that even a week ago would have seen them shot. now their dream, at least the first step of it, is in place as libya inches toward eedom. jeffrey kofman, abc news, libya. >> obviously dramatic last few hours as this is unfolding. watching this throughout the morning, already we saw a celebration outside the white house. dozens of libyan-americans came out to mark the end of an a. the gadhafi era apparently over here within days if not hours at this point. already getting a strong reaction from libyans here in our country. >> we've already seen that oil prices have begun to drop as a result of the fact they normally port about 1.5 million gallons of oil from there. at production has been shut down and potentially could be reopened. >> political fallout, economic fallout, a huge story on a lot of levels. we'll keep an eye on that throughout the morning. of course president obama was in touch with his security team overnight as these dramatic events unfolded. in between briefings the president did stop at a seafood restaurant and actually visited some friends on on martha's vineyard where he is vacationing for a few days. the president later did issue a statement saying in part, tripoli is slipping from the grasp of a tyrant. the united states has recognized the transitional national council now as the legitimate governing authority in libya. the future of libya is now in the hands of the libyan people. and you can stay with abc news throughout the morning and all day for the very latest on these very quickly moving developments in libya. we'll take you live to that country on "america this morning" and have full coverage later today on "good morning america." now to syria where another strong man is vowing to stay president. president assad said there would be repercussions to any country interfering with syria's affairs. assad was responding to the growing international pressure for him to step down. hundreds of anti-government protesters have been kill by the syrian government since the uprising began five months ago. and the other big story on this monday morning, tropical storm irene is barreling across the caribbean sea. it is actually expected to become the first hurricane of the season. >> irene may also be on track to make landfall here in the u.s. accuweather's jeanetnette calles tracking irene's every move. good morning, jeanette. >> good morning, rob and linsey. irene now moving away from the u.s. virgin islands. the impacts from irene are now being felt across puerto rico. the worst of irene, we're talking its impacts, will be felt over the northern coast of puerto rico and the dominican republic. not only with torrential rain but gusting winds. maximum sustained winds anywhere from 74 to 95 miles per hour. along with rough surf. it could also impact areas like cuba tuesday into wednesday and potentially hit anywhere between miami and the northwest coast of the bahamas late in the week. by then we can be talking about hurricane irene.category 2 rob, linsey, back to you guys. >> irene actually is already drenching st. croix and knocked out power to thousands of folks. the storm slammed many of the eastern caribbean nations with pretty rough surf and dumped up to 7 inches of rain and triggered flooding in low-lying areas including antigua and st. martin. here's the rest of your monday forecast. showers and thunderstorms from the carolinas to florida and much of the gulf coast. also stormy with gusty winds and hail around sioux falls, omaha, kansas city and st. louis. showers in the desert southwest. rain from seattle to portland. >> mostly 90s from billings to albuquerque. phoenix still who hot soaring t 109. 75 in detroit. 81 here in new york. 91 in miami. and some powerful thunderstorms swamped part of the northeast over the weekend leaving some areas knee-deep in water. philadelphia got 2 1/2 inches of rain in two hours causing flash floods that caught many drivers by surprise. the gushing water stranded some cars in the middle of the road and several thousand customers lost power. in other news now, the national football league is once again condemning violence at a football game. this time it happened in san francisco's candlestick stadium over the weekend. three people were injured, one critically, when the raiders visited the 49ers for a preseason game. kgo cecilia vega has the details. >> reporter: this youtube video shows raiders and niners fans going at it in the stands as they pound and swing away. other fans cheer them on. finally, someone breaks it up. and it didn't end there. in the bathroom during the fourth quarter, a 26-year-old san rafael man was beaten and knocked unconscious. he was rushed to the hospital and is in serious condition. >> we did run into a a guy later -- >> reporter: these tourists also caught a different third quarter brawl. ey say with the rowdiness and drinking on both sides the fights came as no surprise. >> as we were walking in you could tell you were going to be rolling into like a pretty good rumble. because this were empty bottles all over the parking lot. >> there was definitely someone that was feeling some pain after that. there was two -- probably three or four very large men whaling their fists as hard as they could at each other. there's no doubt in my mind someone got pretty hurt. >> reporter: while the 49ers of that remained tight-lipped the raiders issued a statement saying, the incidents are not acceptable to the raiders or to any nfl team and our thoughts are with all affected. as the fights continued to break out, one video shows a line of san francisco police running into the stands to try to breck up the crowd. officers who the two out of towners say too long to respond. >> it took a long time for the cops to get there. >> reporter: a day later police were back out at candlestick, this time searching the parking lot for clues. it is the same location where right after the game ended a man was shot in the stomach. he's now in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. not long before that, a second man was shot in a different location in thth candlestick parking lolo police say his injuries were not life-threatening. san francisco police won't say how many officers were at the game. only that they increased security for the notoriously ugly rivalry. >> wow. ugly. >> in general raiders are known to have pretty vicious fans. some of the worst in the nfl. i love that the guy who was most criticalal injured had an "f" the 49ers jersey on. >> that may not have sat kindly. they have detaped a person of interest. they actually pulled that dude off a party bus. so interesting, yeah. people love their football. the king of norway led a solemn ceremony sunday night to mark the one-month anniversary of the massacre which killed 77 people. the king urged his countrymen to stand firm against intolerance. the man who has confessed to the killings said they were aimed at muslims and politicians who embrace multi-culturalism. the names of each of his victims was read aloud at the service. the new york city prosecutor has called a special meeting today for that hotel maid who accused dominique strauss-kahn of sexual abuse. he fears some or all of the charges against the former head of the international monetary fund will be dropped. another lawyer says the civil suit will go ahead no matter what. thousands of verizon workers head back to their jobs tonight but a contract dispute with the company is far from over. about 45,000 employees have been on strike for two weeks before deciding to go back to work. the two sides still disagree on major issues. divers plunged to the ocean floor off the florida keys over the weekend to witness an annual sex ritual. don't get excite. it's coral everybody. we turn now to the case of that missing american woman in aruba. the search for robyn gardner will resume early this week. >> meanwhile there's a new witness whose statements are raising questions about what the prime suspect has told police so far. t.j. winick has the details. >> reporter: take a look at this exclusive new abc news video in which suspect gary giordano is seen in shackles but without his usual hairpiece. he was on his way to another round of questioning by aruban authorities desperate to find his missing travel companion robyn gardner. giordano had told police he and gardner had gone snonoeling the day she disappeared. abc news has learned a new witness disputes those claims. the witness says he was fishing on the same beach the same day. he says he saw the two take a walklklong the reef around 4:00 p.m. but that they never went in the water. a short time later, they drove away and he never saw either of them again. >> if this witness is being accurate and correct as to locations of both mr. giordano and miss gardner, it's yet another piece of evidence that's inconsistent with his story. >> reporter: this is just the latest disturbing detail to emerge. last week, abc news learned that investigators were looking into a life insurance policy taken out on gardner which named giordano as the beneficiary. >> we're investigating that material to see if there's investigative action. >> reporter: abc news is looking into reports giordano tried to collect on that. >> no one is saying she's dead at that point. obviously he's basically saying, she's dead. how does he know that? well, perhaps he knows because he was involved. >> reporter: t.j. winick, abc news. >> so much damaging evidence against this guy. we should remind folks he's not officially been charged in the case but they are detaping him at least until the end of the month because he's obviously a person of interest in the case. there's suspicion he was involved but no official charge yet. you can imagine it won't be too much longer. >> it seems also the aruban authorities have learned a lesson from the past. they were pretty guarded with information this go-around compared to the 2005 disappearance of natalee hollllay. >> similarities between those two cases striking as well. we've been through this before, haven't we? coming up next, the company bound and review. you liked this one? >> i did like this one. [male announcer] many people are having trouble with their mortgages. the national foundation for credit counseling can help, and this service is completely free. they really helped us. call them. i will. this morning on "world news now," breaking news. rebel forces barge into libya's capital and moammar gadhafi's military join the opposition. >> it's a dramatic and historic scene in tripoli. president obama calling it the end of the gadhafi dictatorship. it's monday, august 22nd. >> from abc news, this is "world news now." >> good morning, i'm rob nelson. >> i'm linsey davis. it is a momentous day in tripoli where both of moammar gadhafi's sons are now in custody and celebrations erupted in the middle of the city. you'll hear how dangerous and dramatic the past 24 hours have been as history is being made. >> the end of a 40-year era, we are witnessing it this morning. also ahead this morning, tropical trouble. a storm named irene has alreadad flooded parts of the caribbean. strong winds, downpours and floods are now hitting puerto rico and the storm system could strengthen in the next few hours. and later this half hour, the mapping involved in a secret wedding. how the groom gave his bride the surprise of his life. it's our favorite story of the day. >> some women in the news room didn't like this idea. i thought it was pretty romantic and considerate. >> as long as he picked out everything according to plan. >> yes, always a tough part. >> just how she'd like it. >> knew how to follow orders. before that, breaking news overnight in libya where anti-government rerels have now taken control of tripoli. thousands are celebrating in the main square which rebels and residents have renamed martyr square. >> the fate of moammar gadhafi is unknown this morning but it's clear his reign is over. abc's chuck sivertsen reports. >> reporter: outside tripoli, the final push was on. the rebel advance was turned back several times during the day with a libyan spokesman saying the regime would fight to the end. >> tripoli is well-protected. >> they're running like rats. >> reporter: the heart of gadhafi's defense, an elititunit commanded by his 27-year-old son, have retreated, abandoning their uniforms as they flee into city. when their base was abaoned the rebels rushed in, capturing a welt of arms and ammunition. newly fortified they pushed on to the western outskirts of tripoli and report meeting no resistance. inside tripoli, there was a second day of clashes between new rebel groups that have risen up and gadhafi loyalists. but in cities that have already been liberated there is widespread elation. >> we smell the freedom now. >> reportete chuck sivertsen, abc news. >> a government spokesman claims that hundreds of libyans have actually been killed in this latest round of fighting. >> the bbc's matthew price was in the middle of the battle for tripoli and filed this report. >> reporter: we have been hearing a large amount of very heavy fighting going on in the streets around the hotel. the government minders who are normally with us, most of them have left, their families have left. and you can -- just as an illustration of what it's like here, even the civil servants who looks at the farm here, he's walking around with april ak-47 kalashnikov. heavy weapons being used. grenades being fired. they could be incoming as well. there is clearly a lot of heavy weapons out on the streets of tripoli tonight, just like there was last night. and there are officicis here who speak of their fears of a massacre if the rebels get in. they believe the rebels are looking for revenge, that there will be a lot of blood-letting, and this will be not be the peaceful transition of power that the u.s. and others in the west want. it's a very clear sign that things are not going well for the gadhafi regime. i think it is now true to say that the gadhafi government days are numbered. they're possibly not even measuring that time in days, they're looking at hours. >> and the president, of course, was keeping an eye on libya as he continues his v vation in martha's vineyard. mr. obama stopped by a seafood restaurant last night and visited with a few friends. after being briefed by his security team the president issued a statement in part saying, tripoli is slipping from the grasp of a tyrant. the united states has recognized the transitional national council as the legitimate governing authority in libya. the future of libya is now in the hands of the libyan people. >> there are rumors about where gadhafi may head next. al jazeera is reporting there are two south african air force planes in tripoli waiting for his departure. >> the big question, it's clear to everyone at this point the reign is days if not hours away from being over. but what comes next in termsmsf the transition into democracy and if the rebels will do what they promise to establish a legitimate democracy in that country? >> thanks a lot, jeanette. as irene hits puerto rico and now hes to florida, the eastern caribbean is still recovering from its blow. shelters were busy in st. croix after that island took a direct hit from that storm last night. antigua and st. martin are coping with flash flooding as well as scattered power outages. and here's a look at your forecast here at home. showers and thunderstorms in the southeast and from new orleans to tallahassee. severe storms in the middle of the country, sioux falls to st. louis. showers from albuquerque to denver. afternoon and evening rain in the pacific northwest. >> 72 in seattle. 87 in sacramento. 90 in salt l le city. 80s from fargo to indianapolis. dallas still hot, 104. new orleans 94. some low 80s from boston to baltimore. it is a much calmer day in the northeast after a day of drenching downpours. strong, slow-moving storms triggered flash flooding from maine to virginia. hail and up to 2 inches of rain inundated streets in the baltimore area. gusty winds knocked down trees and power lines, leaving thousands to cope without power. one of the most controversial sex abuse cases in the world may be coming to a stunning end. the new york city prosecutor's office has invited the hotel maid who claims she was abused to an extraordinary meeting later today. abused by dominique strauss-kahn, the former imf head. abc's aaron katersky has been following this story. >> reporter: the woman at the center of this explosive case, nafissatou diallo, has been summoned to a meeting. >> dominique strauss-kahn -- >> reporter: prosecutors could reveal to her whether they plan to drop sexual assault charges against one of the world's most powerful men. even after she went public, telling abc's robin roberts dominique strauss-kahn was brutal. >> i wanted to throw up. i was so sad. i was so i don't know what to do. i was so scared. >> reporter: at first, prosecutors had no doubt. strauss-kahn was arrest before taking off for paris. weeks later, what prosecutors called substantial credibility issues undermined the maid's story. >> i had made a mistake. but this man tried to rape me. he tried to rape me. >> there's no requirement that you have to be mother teresa to be a rape victim. >> reporter: the maid's attorney, kenneth thompson, launched a public campaign to persuade the district attorney to go forward with the criminal case. >> i am confident in nafi diallo. i'm also confident in the evidence. >> reporter: he is less confident in prosecutors. tell abc news, while he hopes the d.a. will keep the case alive we are not confident he will do so. the d.a.'s office will not comment if the charges are dismissed as strauss-kahn's attorneys have said they should be. a dramatic prosecution would end with no answer to the question of what really happened in that hotel room. aaron katersky, abc news, new york. the pope's celebrated youth festival ended with an outdoor mass near madrid, spain. 1.5 million young people came from around the world to the six-day event which had the flavor of a week-long rock concert. earlier police had fought with protesters who were angry that the spanish government was paying so much but sunday's mass ended the festival on a high note. > i really like this story. this is a good one. a utah couple returned home after a night out and heard a noise coming from inside the walls of their house. turns out it was 8-year-old steven hopkins who actually claims he climbed from a tree to the roof and then fell down the chimney while looking for something to eat and drink. >> unfortunately, the chimney took some odd turns and steven got stuck 30 feet down between two floors. firefighters had to cut an eight by five foot hole in the wall to get him out. the boy was just coming over -- he lived a few blocks away and he was coming over to play with the grandkids. >> that poor guy. the firefighter who got him out, he was covered in soot, the his mother. took the boy back to so it ended well. >> he had to be looking for santa claus or something was going on there. >> it's not like a santa story but at least he got out safe. next time just go to a drive-through, don't go through the chimney. we'll be right back with more "world news now" after this.
