Sam is tracking it all for us right now. Good morning, amy. Good morning, everyone. Its not just the snow and ice and cold youre talking about. When you add in the storm, its more than 1,100 miles worth of storm, from the great lakes to the gulf coast. Well start this morning with one of the tornadoes in mississippi and louisiana. We had them popping there. You can see it in the light area, across the field, the twitter pictures. The idea that four tornadoes possibly in that zone. We know that three have been reported. Now, were looking at storm damage that is eerily similar to a tornado in that east texas area. Looking at storm damage that came in overnight. It was strong, gusty winds. And the possibility of a tornado. In one county, sabine county, texas, where a woman was killed when a tree limb came down in her home. To the north, you see the winter watches and warnings still out. Chicagoland got their biggest hit of the season so far. 3. 1 inches of snow. But thats a lot for an area that hasnt seen snow and hasnt had it. One of the places buried with snow, were talking about kansas city. And thats where ginger zee is this morning. Good morning, ginger. Reporter you dont get piles of snow like this often. They had more than nine inches. Some of the biggest snow theyve had in years. It happened from kansas to nebraska, now this morning, all the way to wisconsin and michigan. This morning, as the mammoth snowmaker marches east, it is sending cars sliding. And watch this bus as it tries to turn down this street. It fishtails and slams right into a light pole. In kansas thursday, the deluge of snow led to this rescue attempt. Planes, too, at a standstill. This one in wichita, dug out by hand. Its a mess out here. Its really a mess out here. Reporter and its not just how much snow is falling. But how fast. At times, up to three inches per hour. Then, theres this. Watch as lightning illuminates the skies in missouri. Creating a relatively rare winter combo. One that we caught on camera. Thats thundersnow. Ready . This morning, more than a fifth of the population in 20 states is waking up under this winter blanket and being urged to stay off the roads. Ginger zee capturing the thundersnow. The storm is developing so rapidly. You get a intensified cloud development. That creates the lightning and thunder. Its more likely to get it in the thunderstorm. Theres a new system that shoots off from the energy of that big one. That means its a mess for the weekend in parts of the northeast and midatlantic. Well go over who gets what so youre not surprised in regular weather. Now, Oscar Pistorius right now waiting to hear his fate. His bail hearing about to conclude. And bazi kanani is in pretoria, south africa, with the latest. Good morning, bazi. Reporter good morning, george. Oscar pistorius walked into a packed courtroom this morning. His head bowed. He struggled to remain his composure, sobbing at times. A decision is expected to come within the next hour on whether pistorius will be allowed to go home or will have to live in prison until his trial is concluded. As the crush of cameras looked on, the 26yearold lawyer grabbed his hand, telling him, youre going to be okay. Trembling as he said, good morning, your worship. His family anxiously awaiting a decision. His coach also in the courtroom, hoping to get him back into the training soon. I think to get his mind sort of clear, the sooner eer he can start with a bit of work. Reporter in closing arguments, prosecutors said pistorius version of why he shot his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp on valentines day, was improbable. They believe he intentionally killed her after an argument. When she locked herself in his bathroom, he took a gun from under his bed and firped at her through the door four times. Defense attorneys insisted it was an accident. That pistorius mistook his girlfriend for an intruder. They also said pistorius would not be a flight risk because he is too recognizable and needs constant medical attention for his legs. The case took a wild turn on thursday, when a new lead investigator was assigned, following the bombshell revelation that the detective in charge of the night of the shooting, hilton botha, is himself facing murder charges. Botha was immediately dropped from the case. Courtwatchers believe the blow to both thats credibility, along with the admission theres not yet evidence to disprove pistoriuss account of what happened, has seriously damaged the prosecutions case. Again, court reconvenes about a half hour from now. Legal analysts say the bail matter may not be over. The losing side can still appeal to a higher court. And then, pistorius trial is expected to begin in six to eight months, maybe even longer. One of the reasons its so important to his family he be granted bail today. George . Thanks. Lets get more from legal analyst dan abrams. And the defense lawyers, dan, have a pretty hard job here. The standard quite high. They have to come up with exceptional reason why pistorius should be free. Thats based on the initial ruling by the court. But i think a lot has changed since that initial ruling. I think its clear from the courts questions that the court may not apply that really high standard. And may in effect say, after hearing all of the evidence, i dont think that there is sufficient evidence to say theres premeditation at this point. As a result, apply a lower standard which would basically force the prosecution to prove why he should remain locked up. Even though that was the original findings. There was premeditation. Correct. Lets look at what happened in the courtroom in these final arguments. So much focus on the disability of pistorius. I thought that was very interesting. What the defense is saying, where is he going to go . How is he going to get away . This is a guy who needs constant medical attention. He has prosthesis on his legs. Theyre saying theres no chance he could just flee. The prosecution saying, wait a second. We have to treat him like any other defendant in this case. But it did seem, based on the questions from the court, that the court was somewhat sympathetic to that position, as well. This investigator, removed as lead investigator, mr. Botha. But he still has to go up on the stand. Hes going to be a witness in this case. Just because they take him off the lead, he was still at the scene. Hes going to be called as a key witness in the trial. And thats going to be a problem for the prosecution, once this case goes to trial. Dan abrams, thanks very much. Thank you. Now, to the deadly drive by shooting on the vegas strip, right in the middle where so many families go on vacation. A firefight outside a hotel, leaving three people dead. And the assailants are still armed and dangerous. Abbie boudreau is at the scene in las vegas. Good morning. Reporter good morning, amy. It was here on the vegas strip where three people were killed. And what many are calling a driveby shooting made for the movies. These images show the fiery end of a deadly shooting, which played out in the heart of the vegas strip thursday. Believing three people dead and three injured. This morning a multistate manhunt is on for the unidentified shooter, which sources say may have been targeting this man, las vegas rapper kenny clutch. We believe the occupants of the range rover are armed and dangerous. Reporter police say a group of men inside a black range rover suv opened fire on this maserati. The passenger was hit but survived. Clutch, who was driving, was killed. Police say the maserati swerved into oncoming traffic, hitting multiple cars before slamming into a cab, which burst into flames and exploded. The cab driver and passenger both died. I can see one vehicle down here on the corner of the intersection, totally engulfed in flames. Reporter police now say they believe the shooting began as an argument moments earlier at a nearby casino. This morning, as four states look for the driver of that range rover, police here in sin city are trying to calm nerves. This is the fifth incident on the vegas strip since december. This is something you never really, really ever want to explain as a parent, whose child reporter and police are still going through Surveillance Video this morning, trying to look for clues that will lead them to the shooter. But one of the most visible ways most americans will see their impact will come sometime during the spring travel season. When it comes to air travel, the first thing well all see are longer lines at airport security. Expect 10 fewer tsa agents on the job. To cut its budget, the Security Agency will ask each of its agents to take unpaid days off. One prominent budget expert told us, it could get really bad. You guys are going out to reagan airport. And they to wait three hours to get through security. There will be enough pressure that the American People will say, we have had enough of this. Reporter its not just security lines. The cuts will mean fewer air traffic controllers, which will mean less traffic in the skies. And, you guessed it, more time on the runway waiting to take off. You might want to rethink trips overseas. Without a budget deal, there could be fewer Border Control and customs agents. And the department of Homeland Security says, lines as long as three or four hours at immigration and customs. Despite the dire warnings and inability to reach an agreement, the spending cuts represent only a fraction of total spending. With the cuts, the federal government will spend about 15 billion more this year than it spent last year. The spending cuts go into effect one week from today. But their impact wont be felt right away. First, the government must give employees 30 days notice before they take one unpaid day off a week. That means youre really going to see the impact some time in april. Those cuts could be in for some time. The president made phone calls to congressional leaders last night. But no Real Progress on negotiations. Reporter weve been asking, why isnt the president talking to republican leaders. He finally did. My understanding was these calls were a reiteration of position. All of a sudden, we met a brandnew jodi arias. Forget that softspoken, sobbing woman we got to know on the stand the past eight days. She was replaced by a smiling, sometimes smug defendant, who was ready to fight for her life. Jodi arias debuted a new look for her big day, a black business suit. And she meant business. Sparring with veteran prosecutor, juan martinez, on his first day of crossexamination. Do you have problems with your memory, maam . Sometimes. Reporter martinez grilled her about not remembering she stabbed her exboyfriend in june of 2008. I have no memory of stabbing him. Reporter all arias seems to remember now is she killed in selfdefense, after claiming alexander attacked her. What factors implement your having a memory problem . Usually when men like you are screaming at me or drilling me. That affects your memory problems, right . It does. It makes my brain scramble. Reporter martinez tried to rattle her. Frequently smiling at the man who wants her sentenced to death. The Prosecutor Says she plotted the murder of her exboyfriend and repeatedly lied to cover her tracks. He believes one of her biggest lies is that shes an abused woman. Arias says her crooked finger is evidence of that. She blames months before she killed alexander, he broke her finger. Show us how bent it is again. Reporter but martinez believes she injured her finger while she was shooting and repeatedly stabbing them. To make the point, he showed this picture of arias perfectly healthy looking hand months after alexander supposedly beat her. That didnt phase the newlyconfident arias, either. You dont have a bent finger here. My finger is bent there. Youre saying your finger is bent there . Yes. Reporter jodi arias has been on the stand for so long, to be honest, the jury was starting to get bored. Not when crossexamination started. They stopped taking notes. They looked right from jodi arias, back to the prosecutor and back to jodi arias. It was like they were looking at a tennis match, amy. And this will continue on monday. All right. Ryan owens with the very latest. For more, now, lets bring in gma legal analyst, dan abrams. I know youve been impressed with arias as a witness until now. She was so calm under crossexamination. Was that a good thing . I think she continues to be a good witness. She has horrible facts. Her story makes very little sense. But as a witness, i think she continues to do well. And i think shes doing well while the prosecutor, i think, is going a little overboard. Meaning, the prosecutor has the facts on his side. He has the inconsistencies. He has the trouble with her account. He doesnt need to yell at her because i think that the only danger here is that a few jurors feel sorry for jodi arias. And the way you feel sorry for jodi arias is if it seems like the prosecutor is unnecessarily badgering her. Keep in mind that he has the facts on her side. I think he has to take it down a notch. And court back in session on monday. Do you think well see a change of tactic . A change of attitude with the prosecutor . I dont know. A lot of people are echoing what im saying. Lawyers watching the case, people on social media. And these are almost all people who presume that jodi arias is guilty of something opinion and a lot of them are saying that the prosecutor, by saying to her, yelling at her and pointing at her and doing other things, is not helping his case. If hes listening and if he cares, i think that he might take it down a notch. From what i understand, this is his style. This is the way he crossexamines. Hes looking for that perry mason moment. Reporter what youre seeing is a young man hanging on for dear life. 17yearold jacob gutierrez. His grip slipping, is about to plummet four stories into the side of this mountain. It was pretty terrifying. I was thinking, if i fall wrong, if i land wrong on one of these rocks, im probably going to get really hurt or die. Reporter this amateur video, which was just posted online, shows the shocking moments right after gutierrez tried to throw a snowball to a fend member 2nd. Instead, he loses his balance and eventually his grip. Im hanging. And i just lose grip. And i remember it all. I remember just falling. It felt really far. But i hit a rock. And next thing you know, im looking up at the ski lift. Reporter look again. Gutierrez drops 45 feet from this santa fe, new mexico, ski lift, as his friends watch helplessly, recording it all. As he was falling, i just it was pretty scary. I thought he might have died. I actually hit my head on the rock. As you can see, i have a scar. There was just blood everywhere. I was in shock. Reporter its not the first time someone has blitzed off of a ski lift like this one. Just this year, this young boy slipped from a chair lift in wi. You see his father holding his hand. The boy was unharmed. But back in new mexico, gutierrez wasnt as lucky. This left him with liver damage, along with a collapsed lung and a broken skull. Dude. Reporter scars, he says, which have now scared him into being more careful. Im definitely going to start wearing a helmet from now on. Reporter a good lesson, no doubt. Gutierrez was hanging there some six minutes before falling. He was in intensive care for a few days. As you can see, this morning, he was just just fine. Held on for six minutes. Hes accused of breaking the law. He had been texting over 25, 30 different women. Meeting up with seven, eight women a day, when he said he was supposedly at work. Reporter in just a few hours, the 29yearold will be arraigned before an indiana judge, after allegedly scamming and robbing 38 women in 7 states. He relies on girls he meets on the internet to provide him what he needs to get through life. Reporter police say holycross has logged on to dating website, stealing not just the hearts of the women he met, but taking everything they own. Theresa says she was one of those victims. These are all the different texts, from all of the different women. Reporter she had been scammed by holycross, who she knew as ray price since september. He had moved in. Then, her camera disappeared. And i found a receipt for a pawnshop. And it was for my camera. Reporter she says holycross denies selling it. But when she went to police, he moved out. But she still wanted him stopped. So, she texted him and initiated a reunion earlier this week. When he flew back into town to see her, she called police.
