this morning, we hear from the u.s. olympic committee. caught on camera. a jaw-dropping red light runner. that oncoming car, crashing through the intersection, flying through the air. and what's unbelievable? central park, already full for our party in the park, country-style. >> yes. luke bryan. we're excited to have him singing the hottest country song in america. plus, we will be asking about the controversy, exploding this week over his singing of the national anthem at the all-star game. you see him right there. and he will explain what he was doing. it will all make sense very soon. and we have other news to get to, as well. mitt romney may be closing in on a v.p. pick. and a surprising report surfacing overnight, that secretary of state condoleezza rice could be on that list. and from las vegas, two powerful, fully-grown chimpanzees escaping from their cages. and going on a rampage that shut down parts of the strip. how they broke free and how they were finally caught. we're going to start with the scare in the sky. a plane for madrid, from new york, had to land shortly after takeoff after suspicious wires were found in one of the bathrooms. and jim avila covering it for us. good morning, jim. >> reporter: good morning, josh. the bomb squad looking for an explosive device that turned a jumbo jet around after takeoff from new york city. terror in the sky? or another case of airplane jitters? it was another white-knuckle moment in the sky. about an hour into the flight, the pilot told passengers he was turning the plane around due to mechanical problems. but it was really for something for sinister. >> we think, she's the one that's supposed to be the decoy, that keeps looking at the gentleman that was playing with the possible explosive device in the lavatory. >> reporter: that's the pilot of the delta jumbo jet that just took off from jfk airport, headed to madrid, spain. requesting assistance from air traffic control after a device was found and a passenger was acting suspiciously. >> so, if she gets off the aircraft, we need her escorted by police also. >> i understand you want her off at this time? is that correct? >> that would be correct. >> reporter: a u.s. marshal on delta flight 126 found the recorded explosive device in the bathroom. it's described as wires in two pieces of drinking straws about an inch and a half long. the wires were running through each. >> at that point, they led two people off the plane. one of them, it looks like a woman who was really upset. and then, the other, you know, was just a young man in the back somewhere. >> reporter: according to law enforcement officials, wires were found in the lavatory. but no explosive device. and the 206 passengers and 10 crew members were evacuated safely. police questioned the woman who was described as freaking out during the commotion. but she was just ill. and they also questioned the man who had just come out of the restroom before the two straws and a wire were discovered. no one is in custody. and police say there was no crime. >> good news on this friday. thanks for that, jim avila. let's turn to amy robach with a look at the other headlines of the morning. good morning. >> good morning, everyone. we begin with the police officer who worked on first lady michelle obama's motorcycle unit. he's been placed on desk duty this morning. the officer was overheard making a comment about shooting the first lady. but we're told there was never any serious threats to her life. and the officer will likely not face any criminal charges. sources say, it appears the remark was a bad joke. in downtown los angeles last night, police in riot gear moved in to break up a crowd of about 200 angry protesters. it started when occupy l.a. ak activists were in a chalk event. one officer was injured and about a dozen people under arrest. a troubling development overseas this morning, raising national security concerns here at home. word that syria, in a brutal crackdown against its own people, is now beginning to move chemical weapons out of storage, a move the united states has long feared. abc's alex marquardt is along the syrian border right now with the latest. alex? >> reporter: that's right, amy. one u.s. official told "the wall street journal" that this is, quote, incredibly dangerous for u.s. national security. the fear is that these weapons will fall into the wrong hands. the regime of bashyr al asad has one of the biggest stockpiles of agents in the middle east. the regime denied the move. but if true, it's unclear what the intentions would be, to move them or to safeguard them. and this comes at a highly violent time at this uprising with reports of 200 villagers killed yesterday by regime forces. four people are missing after a massive landslide in british columbia. take a look. three homes were destroyed. others were buried up to their roof. heavy rain is blamed for triggering that landslide. an autistic man has been found alive after spending three weeks lost with no food in the utah desert. 28-year-old william le fever survived by eating frogs and roots and drinking river water. the officer who found him said le fever could not have survived another 24 hours. and think of this the next time you want to gun it through an intersection. watch a car speeding down. it's on the left side of your screen, right through the red light. look at that. slamming into the orange car before going airborne and taking down the light pole. the driver survived. police released this video as a reminder. saying it's a matter of life and death to stop on red. and slow down on yellow, as well. he gunned it through the yellow light. >> thanks for that, amy. >> sure. now, to reports surfacing overnight about the surprising name atop of mitt romney's vice presidential list. former secretary of state condoleezza rice. the gop candidate said an announcement about his pick is coming soon. it's "your voice, your vote." and jon karl has more of this. what do you make of this report? >> reporter: the report comes from the drudge report, which has been accurate on romney before. and after all, look. she is experienced. she is popular. she was the real star at a retreat romney held in utah last month. but i have to tell you. i see two huge problems with this. the first is rice's own words. earlier this month, she said, this is an exact quote, there is no way i would do this. she also said back in march, how many ways can i say it? not me. the other big problem i see is abortion. condoleezza rice described herself as mildly pro-choice. and romney has says over and over again, his choice will be pro-life. we have more of a chance to see her being football commissioner than vice president. >> she has spoken about being commissioner one day of the nfl. what are the names on the top of your list? >> reporter: top of the list, tim pawlenty and rob portman. i think you cannot rule out marco rubio, kelly ayotte, and paul ryan. only romney knows. we are entering the final stages of his decisionmaking process. >> sooner or later do you think we'll hear? and now, after the outrage from capitol hill, we're hearing from the olympic committee about this story. they're saying they're taking all these opinions into consideration. but legislators say it's not enough. they want to know how this could happen. and they want it fixed. they are the men and women of team usa. when they march into london's opening ceremonies, they'll be wearing red, white and blue. a classic american look by ralph lauren. but we learned it's not all that american. made in china. china. nick symmonds tweeted me, outsourcing will always be part of the global economy. but outsourcing the american outfit? that seems wrong. and lawmakers agreed. sending bipartisan backlash. >> i think they should take the uniforms, put them in a big pile and burn them. and start again. >> you think think they would know better. >> we're able to wear uniforms to wear in london. >> reporter: it's not just the blazers our athletes wear. if all of the u.s. merchandise was made in america, analysts say we could keep about $1 billion in the country, create countless jobs. but would the olympic committee be willing to make one change to the athlete's uniform? could they? at the u.s. olympics hall of fame induction ceremony last night, our producers caught up with the olympic committee spokesman, patrick sandusky. >> people have been forming opinions on where the uniforms should be made or not made. they're made by an iconic american company that supports our team. and our team gets there because of that support. >> reporter: the olympic committee is privately funded. they're proud of their sponsorship with ralph lauren. overnight, we were hearing from olympians, former and current. a lot of them privately saying they agree with nick symmonds, the u.s. sprinter. saying we don't want to get in the politics of this. but it doesn't seem right. this is the hat, the beret. and that is also made in china. >> bipartisan accord on the hill, you know you're on to something. everyone's agreeing in washington. >> i think you said it best when you said what were they thinking? now, consumer alert about a nationwide con that's claimed thousands of victims. it's an identity theft scam that promises to help pay utility bills in the middle of a scorching summer. and the scheme is spreading on social media. jim avila is back with that story. >> reporter: it's the latest scam spreading like wildfire across the country. phone calls, flyers and text messages like this one, offering to pay people's utility, phone bills, even mortgages. the scammers use president obama's name to suggest there is a government-funded program to pay their bills. >> they tell the victim, that if you will register your social security number with them, they will give them a federal bank routing number. they can use that information to pay their bill electronically online. >> reporter: when you try to pay your bill online, the payment seems to go through. but the scammers have your personal information. people all over the country, looking for a little relief with their bills, have been falling victim to this scam. >> it's very rough right now.re there for bill, i'm going to try to find it. >> reporter: one energy company, pfe&g, said thousands of customers fell into the trap. people are posting on the social media sites like twitter. for the rest of us at home, beware of anything that sounds too good to be true. >> president obama is not offering to pay your water bills. nor is there any program to pay your water bills. >> reporter: the best tip to avoid this scam is never give out to your personal information to someone who calls you or solicits you. you make the call. >> too good to be true -- >> all right, jim. now, to las vegas, where escaped chimpanzees terrorized an entire community and forced a large part of the city into lockdown. we're learning new details on just where the chimps came from and why such incidents such as this one seem to be happening more and more. abc's cecilia vega has the story. >> chaotic situation in a las vegas neighborhood, after two powerful adult chimpanzees escaped. >> reporter: it was the news that brought a las vegas neighborhood to a standstill. two dangerous chimps on the loose, running wild. >> one turned around at me and seen me. and i was like, get out of here. it hopped over the wall. >> reporter: buddy and c.j., short for calamity jane. each standing over five feet tall. weighing over 100 pounds apiece, broke from their cage in this las vegas backyard. >> there was a little loose. >> reporter: there was a hinge there last night? >> yes. this was locked. completely locked. now, to be on the safe side, he says maybe i should put another chain on it. >> reporter: with that broken hinge, the caretakers believe the two chimps repeatedly kicked the concrete wall until the door came loose. and then, went free. >> we had reports it was pounding on police cars and varying accounts of the animals were very agitated. >> reporter: it took two tranquilizers for police to control c.j. but when buddy charged, an officer with a shotgun fired. caretaker, miguel gutierrez was there. >> they started screaming. they're going to shoot you. i wanted to ride with him. >> reporter: you were going to take that bullet? >> well, both of us because -- to me, he's like a human. he was one of my best friends. >> reporter: lee and tim said they used the winnings from a poker championship to rescue buddy and c.j. after a lifetime in captivity. they admit they experienced firsthand how quickly things can turn. he's thrown you in this cage? million in child support. >> thanks, amy. now, new information this morning in the case of the missing millionaire, whose empty boat washed up on a florida beach nearly a month ago. there's been no trace of guma aguiar since he took that boat to sea on a rough night last month. abc's john schriffen has the story. >> it jumps up from 16 to 18. then, goes back down and drops to 5. >> reporter: erratic speeds, dramatic changes in direction, and many unanswered questions. this just-released gps data gives new insight on what may have happened to guma aguiar, seen here with his family aboard the very boat he vanished from. >> i love you. >> reporter: the father of four who was worth more than $100 million was last seen june 19th. >> now, we're able to establish a time line where mr. aguiar left his residence, went out to sea, and the boat drastically changed course. >> reporter: the next day, his boat washed ashore without him. data shows that aguiar turned on his gps here, as his boat entered the atlantic ocean, at 7:29 p.m. he went northeast, topping out at 31 miles per hour. but it's here at 7:56 p.m., that something went awry. tracking data shows aguiar's speed dropped suddenly, the boat doing an about-face. a maneuver, some say, could have been an opportunity for aguiar to board another vessel and vanish. >> transfer could have been made easily. all he had to do was step across. >> there's all sorts of possibilities that could play in here. we don't know exactly what occurred out there on the ocean. >> reporter: over the next five hours, aguiar's boat drifted back to shore at an average of just two miles per hour. finally making landfall at 1:00 a.m. his wallet, keys and phone still onboard. >> with his amount of means and what he's able to do, it would be quite easy for him to stage his own disappearance. and it would be very difficult for us to find him. >> reporter: and with aguiar out of the picture, his wife, mother and billionaire uncle have been fighting over his fortune. no one agrees who controls his estate. if aguiar doesn't turn up, it will likely be decided in court. this is still being called a missing persons case. >> we'll have more
