>> mitt romney makes a whole lot of money. more than $42 million over the last two years. he was reluctant to put out the numbers. now we have seen them. we know what he made. at last night's debate, we learned more about what he's made of. mitt romney earned more than $42 million over the last two years. earning in day what the median american makes tin a year. he gave away a lot, too, more than $7 million in charity. his tax bill, more than $6 million over two years. with complicated accounting, his effective tax rate, about 14%. the same as someone making $70,000 a year. he listedoff shf shore accounts listed in the cayman islands and a closed account in switzerland. >> i pay al the taxes legally requi required, not more. >> reporter: a blistering attack at the debate. >> in the 1990s, he had to rezin in disgrace. >> reporter: newt gingrich staged his own document dump overnight. a contract with freddie mac. he t >> i don't think we can possibly retake the white house if the person leading the party is working for the chief lobbyist of freddie mac. you have congressman saying you lobbied them. at the same time, your center was taking contributions -- >> you just jumped a long way over here, friend. >> another instance of influence peddling. >> i understand your technique. you have used it consistently. st unfortunate. it's not going to work very well. the american people see through it. >> reporter: it does seem this blood bath is taking its toll on both sides. our new poll shows unfavorable views of mitt romney have sky-rocketed. far outpacing those who view him favorably. newt's favorability dropped six points since november. meantime, president obama has his highest favorability numbers in over a year. >> let's get the white house's take on this. david plouffe, the top political strategist joins us. i want to begin with the tax returns of mitt romney. at 6:03 a.m., an e-mail, a blast, from the democratic national committee. saying the tax release raises more questions than answers. what more do voters need to know? >> there will be 47 more republican primaries and kau cau caucuses. the voters will have their say. the president will talk in the state of the union something that warren buffett talked about. he should not pay less in taxes than his secretary does. the president will talk about the buffett rule. we make sure everybody is doing their fair share. >> do you think it's wrong that mitt romney only pays about 15%? >> we need to change our texas system. middle class workers shouldn't be paying more than people making $40 million, $100 million a year. we have rules of the road in place. rime sure mitt romney tried to follow them. we need change in our tax code. everybody has to do their fair share. that will be an important part of growing the economy. >> we saw the favorability numbers. back in october, the president told me he sees himself as the underdog. after the debates and caucuses, is he still the underdog? >> we're going to be running next year in a tough economy. we'll have a very close election. that's a fact. one of the things the president will point out, it's election year. the american people demand action right now. he's going to lay out tonight a blueprint for how we build an economy built to last, so it's more durable. this make or break for the middle class. we have had 3 million jobs created in the last 22 months. as we create jobs, we have to focus on what kind of america do we want? we want one built on american manufacturi manufacturing, american energy. >> the president will be in a tough environment. less than half of the country approves of the job he's doing. more than two-thirds think america is moving in the wrong direction. 1 in 5 americans are urn underemployed or unemployed. how do we convince americans to stay the course? >> we have to figure out what is the right thing to do in terms of the economy. making sure everybody is doing their fair share. then we'll have an election. i think if you look what we -- what happened in '08, we almost went into a great depression. we had an incredibly steep recession. that didn't just happen. there was a reason for it. the question is, do they want to go back to the policies, let wall street write its own rules? >> no, i have nothing. everything is in the backyard. >> reporter: andrea made it from the bedroom to her safe place just in time. what are you thinking? >> what i love and i cherish -- my home, the gone. >> reporter: her daughter and granddaughter rushed to her side. >> i'm thankful. [ siren blaring ] >> reporter: the tornado tore through the neighborhoods in the deep of the night, while most people were sleeping. >> we saw light. it was devastating. i have never seen -- >> i was just praying that everything was all right. >> reporter: scientists say it's unusual for such a destructive tornado to hit so early in the year. and unfortunate that it hit in the middle of the night. josh? >> indeed that is true. steve osunsami. sam with more on this in a moment. the supreme court has ruled the police must obtain search warrants before using gps to track suspects. and now, the first public memorial for former penn state football coach joe paterno. it will be held today on the penn state campus. paterno's son is assuring fans his father was at peace before he died. dangerous scene here in massachusetts. family, including a 3-year-old boy, fell through the pond. firefighters got there. several of them fell in themselves in the process of the rescue. they did manage to pull the boy out, then his parents, then all of them. all were treated for hypothermia. finally, a much-needed spelling lesson outside this s-c-h-o-o-l. some say ewe tutility crews did. others say school officials had that there for months. i'm ocd about that. that would have driven me -- i would have painted it myself. >> no spell-check on the streets. >> where is autocorrect when you need it? michael palomino did. his son is now facing the consequences. as painful as the video is to watch, the father of this teen, ray mond r raymond palomino says it was especially gut-wrenching for him because of the decision he was forced to make. >> i had to call 911. >> reporter: that's right. he called the police on his own 17-year-old son. he was then arrested. >> i did what was right as a parent. >> reporter: all of the people covered their faces with hoods or masks, except palomino. close to half a million people watched, among them, relatives who called his dad, a sheriff's deputy of 30 years. >> i'm in law enforcement myself. the right thing was to him in. >> reporter: though he doesn't regret his decision, he worries that the consequences are too hard. of the other kids involved, raymond is the only one this jail and the only one charged as an adult. >> he doesn't have a criminal background. that's what i don't understand. >> reporter: he's being held on $100,000 bond. his dad, a single father, can't afford the bail him out. >> he's not the aggressor. he's 17. they're trying to make a model out of him. >> reporter: police say there is zero tolerance for this. >> this is mob-type behavior. they get a lot of courage when it's six or seven beating up one person. it's not tolerable. >> reporter: even though his son is facing possible jail time, he maintains -- >> i don't regret turning him in. what he did was wrong. now he has to suffer the consequenc consequences. >> reporter: seven people were arrested in all. the other six were charged as juveniles and released. he said when he went to visit his son in jail, he told him he did the right thing. >> for more on the case, we're joined by dan abrams. why was he charged as an adult? >> he's 17. the rest of them were 15 or 16. if this had been a more serious crime. the younger kids charged with more serious crimes, they, too, could have been charged as adults. >> $100,000 bail. fair? >> are they going have enough to get them out? the answer was, this was a high amount of bail because they couldn't get him released immediately. this is a high bail. in connection with this case, the judge thought a fair one. >> when you see the entire tape. it is vicious. how will that play? >> that's what's hard to show? what we're showing here on "good morning america." >> we can't. we shouldn't. >> it goes on and on and on. they beat him, he's on the ground, they start kicking him, they hold him there. someone pulls a shoe out of the bag and starts beating him again on the face with a shoe. that comes into play. both in decisions as to what charges to file but maybe even more importantly in terms of a possible sentence. sometimes, you say to yourself, is one kick enough for example, to get a charge. the answer is yes. when it comes to a sentence and a judge has digs cession. how hard and how often you kick can matter. >> we talked about how bullying has escalated in these times. >> i would think 20, 30 years ago, people might say, this happens sometimes with kids. no, this is a crime. and i think it's a good thing that the law and that our society has said, you know what, we're not treating incidents like this as things that happen to kids at school where the parents deal with it among themselves. this is a crime. when you assault someone the way this kid was assaulted, it's criminal. i think legal action was rightly taken. >> the dad said, don't praise me. i'm dad. this was the right thing to do. >> he had no choice. this was on youtube. people were naming the kid any way. >> i'm glad to hear that the son said it was the right thing. we should say, as we're talking about the father that did the right thing, dan is going to be a father.
