cain, in front right now. while the texas governor, rick perry, is struggling. we're going to talk to perry in a moment. first, let's bring in jon karl with the latest on the race. what an emotional speech yesterday from perry's wife. >> reporter: absolutely. anita perry has been everywhere on the campaign lately. and she takes attacks on her husband personally. and is not afraid to fire back at his critics. rick perry is bringing out the big guns. sending his wife, anita, on the campaign trial. yesterday, she took a whack at herman cain an his 9-9-9 economic plan. >> when i hear 9-9-9, i want to call 911. >> reporter: perry and his wife first met in elementary school. have been married for 29 years. she's his most staunch advocate. >> we're warriors. we're climbing up that hill to save america. >> reporter: perry zoomed to the top when he got into the race two months ago. since then, he's been in something of a freefall. in 1 poll, dropping 22 points. the campaign has since stymied by bad debate performances. >> he was before -- before the social programs. >> reporter: anita perry accused the other candidates of ganging up on her husband. >> i think these debates have been unfair. >> reporter: perry has taken heat for the controversial views of one of his supporters. >> islam, hinduism, and mormonism are all false religions. >> reporter: pastor robert jeffrey has repeatedly called mormonism a cult. and it's not just mormons he insulted. in a sermon last year, he called catholicism the genius of satan. >> it comes from this cult-like, pagan religion. >> reporter: anita perry teared up yesterday when talking about how tough this campaign has been. saying her husband has been, quote, beaten up, brutalized and chewed up because of his christian faith and his conservative views. george? >> yeah. she was really passionate yesterday, jon. let me ask you. governor perry is going to give his major jobs and energy speech today in pittsburgh. he says it can create 1.2 million new jobs by taking aregulations in the energy sector. but his opponents are saying that's not going to work. it's not going to create the jobs. and they're taking a closer look at his record in texas. >> reporter: they sure are, george. you remember, when perry got into this race, he got into it as the jobs governor. the person who presided over texas at a time when texas led the nation in job creation. but his critics are looking at that record in texas. and right now, texas has an unemployment rate of 8.5%. that's a little lower than the national average. but it is the highest that texas has seen since 1987. and, george, it is double the unemployment rate when perry became governor ten years ago. >> meanwhile, jon, herman cain. what a remarkable story in the last several weeks. yesterday, he actually got some high-profile support for his 9-9-9 tax plan. congressman paul ryan, the chairman of the house budget committee, says he loves the plan. and you saw governor haley barbour of mississippi saying he thinks cain can sweep the south in an election. >> reporter: this is incredible. cain has come out of nowhere. he's had no major support. there's been no major endorsements of his campaign. but he started to take off, obviously leading in some polls. as you say, two major republican figures, now. not endorsing him. but saying good things about his campaign. >> jon, thank you very much. >> and you'll be talking to the governor, governor perry in a moment. now, a surprise confession for the man accused of hacking into some online accounts of some of hollywood's biggest stars. christopher chaney says it was an addiction. andrea canning has the story. >> reporter: christopher chaney is expected to appear in a florida court today. he explained how he became the so-called hacker-razzi. for over a year, private and sometimes naked pictures of stars hit the internet for the world to see. until the fbi finally narrowed in on this man, living 2,500 miles from hollywood, in jacksonville, florida. >> i was almost relieved months ago, when they came and took the computer. >> reporter: 35-year-old christopher chaney, the alleged mastermind behind operation hack hackerazzi admitted to hacking into reports, as part of a deep fascination with celebrities. >> it started with fascination. it turned into being addicted of seeing behind the scenes what was going on. >> reporter: chaney allegedly took financial information and movie scripts. the fbi says he studied the details of the stars' lives, printed in magazines and posted online to get their e-mail passwords. once he accessed their accounts, he stole their address books and went on the hunt for embarrassing photos. >> what would you do with the information you found in those e-mails? >> nothing. i mean, it was almost like reading a completely uncensored blog. i wasn't saving archives of e-mails to blackmail someone. >> reporter: chaney claims he never sold the pictures or information. >> someone contacted me wanting the pictures to sell. this was someone who apparently did it for a living. i don't know who it was. >> did you sell any of those pictures? >> i didn't give that person any pictures. i didn't sell them. i never wanted to sell or release any images. >> reporter: authorities, however, say he did distribute them. >> i deeply apologize. i know what i did. and that it was wrong. and i just have to fix that and deal with it. go forward. >> reporter: chaney is charged with 26 counts of identity theft, unauthorized access to a protected computer and wire-tapping. if convicted, he faces up to 121 years in prison. surprisingly not the first time he was in trouble with the law. in the '90s, he was convicted of mail fraud and sentenced to probation. >> thanks, andrea. we have that interview with governor perry. i spoke with him just before the show. thanks, jon. we're joined by the candidate himself, governor rick perry. in pittsburgh, pennsylvania, to give a jobs speech later today. i want to talk about the jobs speech in a minute. first, the remarkable comments from your wife yesterday. you are a lucky man to have such a passionate defender. but is that what you believe? that these debates have been unfair? and that you've been brutalized because of your christian faith? >> well, i do have one of the finest women in the world that i could be married to. and she is passionate. and i'll tell you that family members generally take these campaigns harder than anyone else. but i'll stand by my wife. i think she's right on both cases. my understanding is, that she said i'm the most conservative candidate in the race. and he's a christian. so, i haven't got anything i can add to that. she's hit me on my mark both times there. >> okay. well, you stand by those comments. i want to get to more of that in a second. now, on to the jobs program. you're rolling out your jobs plan today. herman cain has made his mark with the 9-9-9 plan. mitt romney unveiled his 59-point plan a couple of weeks ago. why is your plan better than theirs? >> well, for a number of reasons. the president of the united states, under my plan, walks in on day one. and the first 100 days starts really making an impact in this country. over 1.2 million jobs to be created by opening up those federal lands and waters, by pulling back the owners regulations we see killing jobs. and rebuilding the e.p.a. those, three, major events, can get america working again, can create wealth and open up this treasure trove of resources that we stand upon on the united states property. so, an executive with governing experience that knows how to create jobs, with a plan that, frankly, is simple. and that's what americans want. and that, as president, is what i will do. >> governor, your pundits point out that unemployment has doubled during your tenure as governor. and that 69% of the jobs created are government jobs. is that the model for the country? >> i disagree with those numbers, for one thing. we had huge growth. a lot of people moved to the state of texas from other states, looking for those jobs. unemployment has gone up across this country. texas wasn't immune to it. we just happened to be creating jobs when other states were losing jobs. and the bulk of those jobs, 95% of them were above minimum wage. and a substantial margin of them were substantially more than what you got or in the private sector. that's how americans want to see job creation. and let's get back to the real issue here. i'm talking about creating jobs in the energy industry that will make america secure from countries who we're buying oil from today that don't have our best interest in mind. >> yesterday, your wife also said that when she looks at herman cain's plan, 9-9-9, she wants to call 911, because it's going to be a national sales tax. is that what you think? >> i think that's close to hitting the spot. you know, when you look at the 9% increase in states that already have a sales tax, you're going to really see pushback from people. once this really gets looked at, it sounds pretty cool to say 9-9-9. but at the end of the day, it is a big tax increase on some people out there that vote, that care. and i think it's going to be tough sledding for 9-9-9. >> governor, what do you make of herman cain? you've dropped 20 points since august. it's all gone to him. he skyrocketed by 20 points. what is he doing right that you're doing wrong? >> well, herman cain is one of the most interesting people sitting on that stage. that's for sure. when people look at what he's talking about, when people look at his tax plan, when people try to make a decision about who you really want running america, somebody that really knows how to create jobs. not that somebody has a catchy slogan. >> finally, governor, you say you stand by your wife's comments, even singled out by your faith. a lot of your opponents say that's what your supporter, revere reverend jeffers did. your opponent, romney, has asked you to repudiate his comments. will you do that? >> i have a lot of people that endorse me. but i don't endorse what they say or believe, for that matter. that's the case on this one. i can't control those individuals who go out and say something who may be more me in a race. this is about freedom of speech. i mean, freedom of religion. our founding fathers were wise in creating those rights. freedom of religion. and we have a great number of faiths. and i support people's choice of being able to pick and choose their faith. but i also choose to support the freedom of expression. so -- >> do you want -- will you repudiate it? >> -- i don't agree with. >> do you repudiate it, governor? >> i can't say that he can't say what he wants to say. the issue is, are we going to tell people what they want to say? and i'm not going to be one of those. this is a country where we truly have freedom of expression. and there's going to be people who say things about me. probably going to be people who say things about president obama, that are offensive to him and his family. but those folks who say those things, are going to be the ones that you need to be asking the questions to. not those of us who are either associated with them, know them, or for that matter, have endorsed president obama. >> finally, governor, this is a gut-check question. how badly do you want to be president? >> listen. i wouldn't have got in this thing if i didn't think america was in trouble. i have a great job being the governor of texas. but i love my country. and there's a point in time when you have to do your duty. and that's what i'm all about. i want to get this country back working again. i love america. i wore the uniform of this country as a pilot in the united states air force. i understand about service and sacrifice. and this is a time when people who truly love this country, who truly have a passion about the freedoms that we've lost from these regulators who are taking away men and women's right to have the dignity of a job. that's what i'm all about. i hope there's somebody watching this program today who is sitting there in their living room without a job, looking for that person who is going to give them hope that they're going to have a job in the future. i'm that person. >> thanks a lot for joining us this morning, governor. >> you're welcome, george. >> big jobs speech today. let's get over to weather now and sam. a lot going on in virginia. >> there is. good morning, robin, george. happy friday, everybody. by the way, talk about a hot spot for really bad weather, it was in virginia last night. from richmond, all the way to washington, d.c. that charles >> i think the investigators will look a lot more at the surveillance tapes than the home video tapes. in any case, when someone has ended up doing something horrible to a child, you can probably find some video at some point that someone's being kind to a child. not to say it's not relevant. but for investigators, it's not going to be a big issue. on the other hand, that surveillance tape, from only hours earlier, the fact that she's buying, in bulk, to some degree, diapers and wipes and other things, i think is helpful to her to say, this sure doesn't look like someone who was about to do something bad to the child. now, there's always the possibility of accidents, et cetera. but i think that surveillance tape is relevant to investigators. >> the parents, first, very open in talking to the media and talking to police. then, they backed off of both. you're going to be going out there this weekend and you're going to talk to the parents. good or bad how they've handled this? >> i think the big problem for them was when the police came and announced the parents are no longer cooperating. a case like this, when there's an announcement the parents are no longer cooperating immediately suspicion starts to grow. i think it was very smart for the parents to come out and say, in effect, there was a misunderstanding. we're going to get back in there. we're going to work with the authorities. but look, working with the media is significant in missing child cases. >> it is, yeah. >> it's not just to defend yourself. but also to draw attention to it, so there's other people out there looking for the child. in a high-profile case, you can suddenly get an army of volunteers helping you. and that's the reason to go to the media. and i think that it's smart of the family to be balancing. but they have to make sure that the authorities are continuing to say they're helping, they're working with us, we're trying to rule them out, et cetera. and then, secondarily is this media strategy. >> again, you'll be talking with them this weekend. i know you'll be filling in. we'll see you with bianna on "gma." shark tale time. josh is here with that story. doug niblack, oregon coast. >> he says. we're going to take you back on this crazy ride, allegedly, on the back of a great white shark. 23-year-old doug niblack had the surprise of his life, when he was surfing and one of the earth's scariest predators collided with him. he said he ended up standing with the shark, surfing it. it lifted him out of the water for several seconds. and the shark took off. the shark didn't bite into him. listen to how niblack and a witness describe the encounter. >> i saw my ankle get pled about three feet, being dragged by the leash. then, it was gone. and that was the scariest part when i didn't know where it was anymore. >> had that fight or flight thing going on. obviously, sharks are bigger than us. so, we chose flight. >> so, sharks, they do roam the oregon coast. surfers see them from time to time. shockingly, no one got video of the encounter. how do we know it happened?
