what happened when lara spencer gets an offer she can't refuse? reality week takes to the mattresses with "the mob wives." and good morning, everyone. i think the word you used for maria shriver, ravishing -- >> she looked terrific last night. >> he first appearance since learning of her husband's child. she was at the taping of oprah's final shows. and she was reportedly having dinner with oprah the night her husband admitted he fathered that child. >> we're going to be talking to the editor in a second. we have details about the mother of the child. abc news has learned it was a mother who worked for the family for at least 20 years. soon, we'll get to the latest on all this. david wright has been tracking it overnight in los angeles. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, george. you know, there are still so many unanswered questions here. not least, how was schwarzenegger able to keep this a secret all those years, from the california voters and from his family? it is not clear how. but as of this morning, we do know who. abc news has learned the other woman in the schwarzenegger scandal is 50-year-old mildred patricia bena. known as patty, she reportedly worked in the household as a housekeeper and assistant for more than 20 years. her son, whose face we have obscured in these photos, is about 14. bena divorced her husband in 2008 and is said to have retired from the schwarzenegger household in january. according to published reports, she and her son never lived in the brentwood house. they currently live in a four-bedroom house well outside los angeles, with bena's three other children. neighbors say they haven't been home for several days. in her first public appearance since the scandal broke, maria shriver appeared before this studio audience, gathered for the taping of one of oprah winfrey's last shows. oprah squeezed her hand tightly, as shriver thanked her for always telling the truth. back in 2003, that show was where she famously defended her husband. >> and i accept him, with all his strength and all his weaknesses. >> reporter: only now is it clear the scope of schwarzenegger's betrayal. according to "the new york times," there was a period 14 years ago when the mother of the illegitimate child was working, pregnant, at the couple's brentwood mansion, at the same time shriver was pregnant with schwarzenegger's son. what a betrayal. >> it's pretty amazing. what is amazing is she stayed in the house. that, to me, is the most incredible part. >> reporter: now, just about everyone wants to know more. >> i think the most shocking thing of this whole ordeal is that it was kept quiet for more than ten years in a he had an out-of-wedlock child. a handful of people had to know. arnold knew. the woman knew. >> reporter: by monday, when schwarzenegger had coffee with his eldest daughter, katherine, he had warned the kids of the news that would break hours later. paparazzi caught up with him outside of the l.a. restaurant where they their father/daughter chat. >> arnold, is there any way you and maria are going to reconcile? >> reporter: little wonder they were not talkative. her 17-year-old brother was blunter. some days you feel like expletive, he tweeted. he changed his name on the twitter profile to patrick shriver. and the man at the center of the scandal has had nothing more to say since he first confirmed "the l.a. times" story. no comment yesterday, as he left his santa monica office. what is truly mind-boggling here is that throughout a pregnancy and a childhood, patty bena was in that brentwood house, with maria shriver. how that could go on for that length of time, with schwarzenegger knowing every time they interacted, it had the potential of blowing up in his face. it's hard to get your head around. >> just amazing. david wright, thanks very much. joining us now for more on this, betsy glick, the senior editor at "people" magazine. i know you're looking at reports about pat bena. what else can you tell us? >> we can tell you what your lead-in just said. this was somebody with the family for approximately 20 years, who has a child who is approximately the same age as the schwarzeneggers' youngest son. and it boggles the mind. >> it truly does. and you know, how maria could live with this for this many years not knowing, apparently. you all reported just this morning that maria was having dinner -- a several-hour-long dinner on monday night with her kids and oprah winfrey. >> yes. that is true. she went to chicago. it was a long-planned event in chicago for one of oprah's final shows. and it's just -- we can imagine how emotional she is right now. her friends are telling "people" magazine, however, that maria is incredibly resilient. and both of these people are determined to do what is right for their four children together. they were out together at church in santa monica on sunday, as a family, posing for pictures. >> does that include getting back together? >> that seems unlikely. >> unlikely. >> unlikely, yes. the reports -- after the initial reports of the split last week, people painted a picture of a couple that had really, really grown apart over the years. she sacrificed a lot for her husband. she was ready to find -- she is ready to find her own thing now. >> what does that mean? what does she want to do? >> people are saying whatever it is, it's going to be big. she produced -- she turned the california women's conference into a powerhouse event. she wants to continue doing that sort of thing. a multiplatform big thing. she is not ready to announce it yet. she's exploring a lot of options. and this is somebody else said, you know, maria shriver was able to live for many years in a sort of gray area with her husband. but that this is too black and white. >> seems like the kids are taking it pretty hard. >> well, they're tweeting that they are still a family. that this is a tough time. they're thanking everybody for support. >> and one, final word on arnold. he has said he would like to try to put the family back together. any sense of where he is going to take his professional career after all this? >> well, he's taking meetings in hollywood. he is signing on to film projects. it appears that's what he's going to do. it's hard to imagine he will have a political career after this. >> that's over. betsy, thanks very much. we're going to talk about this in our next half hour. right now, let's turn to the international scandal that's landed a world financial titan behind bars. abc news has learned that dominique strauss-kahn has been placed on suicide watch in prison. he is accused of sexually assaulting a maid in an upscale hotel. we are learning more about his accuser. and chris cuomo, our "20/20" anchor and friend, is staying on top of this. >> a suicide watch, it's important to know this, is precautionary. there is nothing specific about a threat about strauss-kahn. it's to make sure everything is okay. we now know that the card key swipes from the hotel room put strauss-kahn and the accuser allegedly in the room at the same time. this is a case that is still just starting to build, as is our information about the accuser. the attorney for the 32-year-old sofitel is a single mother of a 15-year-old daughter. >> she doesn't have relatives here. she does not have an extended family. she's extraordinarily vulnerable here. having basically her life taken away from her. >> reporter: but in france, there's growing sympathy for strauss-kahn. sparked by images of the powerful financial chief in handcuffs. some of his supporters claim he was set up by the alleged victim as part of a conspiracy to ruin his political career. his lawyers also disputed the maid's account, suggesting that any sexual encounter was consensual. >> it will not be consistent with forcible encounter. >> reporter: but blake diallo, a close friend of the victim says, she told him she had no idea who strauss-kahn was at the time of the brutal attack. >> she is recovering, slowly. >> reporter: he told reporters, quote, she called me and said something really bad happened. and i said, stop crying, stop crying. she was devastated. devastated. >> from just newspaper accounts, has been a good, quiet employee. always to me, having worked on behalf of women who are victims of violence for almost 40 years, that it's sort of an offensive way to portray her. >> there was nothing that took place in that hotel room which in any way could be construed as consensual, in any manner. this woman was absolutely the victim of a physical and sexual assault. >> reporter: diallo states, she didn't understand why he did such a thing. but that she trusts american justice. >> her world essentially has been taken away from her. she can't go home. she can't go back to work. she doesn't know what's going to be happening to her next. she doesn't know how she's going to make her way in the world. >> and for now, she's going to have to wait because there is a lot of evidence. in fact, investigators say they have more evidence than they thought they would. but it's going to take time to process. >> the next court date is friday. you think he will get bail? >> he could. and here's why. the case seems to be more damming. that means he might flee even more. that's why they're keeping him in right now. but it's so public, it's so well-known, he might be able to make the case, where am i going to go? everybody knows about this. i will stay put. >> thanks. presidential politics. and newt gingrich stumbling after the gate. days after getting in the race, he's under fire on a bunch of fronts and spent much of yesterday doing damage control. jake tapper is at the white house. jake, some conservative pundits saying this campaign is dead on arrival. >> reporter: this is the big presidential campaign kickoff week for newt gingrich. and he has spent much of it apologizing or exploiting himself. that's generally not a good sign that your campaign has gotten off on the right foot. it has been a difficult, and at times, just plain weird presidential campaign launch for former house speaker newt gingrich. shown last night in minnesota being assailed with glitter by a protester. this followed a trip to dubuque, iowa, to win supporters. this dubuque conservative who confronted gingrich, in a hotel lobby, said he would not be among them. gingrich said this on sunday, about the house republican medicare plan. >> i don't think right-wing social engineering is anymore desirable than left-wing social engineering. i don't think opposing radical change from the right or the left is a way for a free society to operate. >> with allies like that, who needs liberals? >> reporter: while gingrich apologized to ryan, there are concerns about gingrich as undisciplined. >> calling it radical and right-wing social engineering is deadly. >> reporter: after all, all but three house republicans voted for the ryan plan. gingrich last night explained himself to greta van susteren on fox news channel. >> i made a mistake. we are at the beginning of a process of solving the entitled problems of the united states. these are enormous challenges. i believe deeply that the american people have to be an integral part of them. >> reporter: and as if all that weren't enough to potentially alienate voters. it turns out gingrich and his third wife, calista, have up to $500,000 debt with high-end jeweler, tiffany's. when asked why the debt, the campaign had no comment. this has been a bad week for newt gingrich, george. and it's only wednesday. >> thanks, jake tapper. now, let's go to robin. >> we have good news today, george. gabby giffords takes another step forward in her remarkable recovery, going through surgery to replace a part of her skull that was removed in january. bob woodruff is here. on this milestone for her. good morning. >> good morning to you. >> we know that you are familiar with this. you suffered a similar injury in 2006, covering the war. tell us a little bit about what is going to happen and how risky it is. >> it's a low-risk surgery she's getting. it's a cranial plasty. she will have part of her skull here, which was a craniectomy, where the skull was removed on the left side. at that time, she had a little dent in her head like that. now, that's going to go back on, largely plastic, back on. and then, she'll be able to get back to normal in many ways. >> the timing of it, her husband -- you were there when he left on the shuttle "endeavour." you said the timing of it is very particular. you can't do it too soon. you can't wait too late to do a procedure like this. >> that's right. in something like this, you wait an average of four months, generally. same thing with me. same thing on the left side. they wait until the brain kind of to deswells. it goes smaller. it's not growing anymore. and they don't want it to shrink, either. they can't put it on until it's down to the size it was before. they don't want it to shrink anymore because when you put this on there's more space between the brain and the skull inside. and you can have more fluid inside. they want to have the right timing with this. it makes sense that he was in space. this was the spot doctors wanted to do it. >> she doesn't have to wear the helmet. >> that's the best. when you have something exposed like this, there's a little pain. you cough. the thing swells up. you put this back on, the pain goes away. and you're on the recovery again. and, yeah. you get rid of that helmet. you no longer have to wear the helmet to bed. >> i see you light up in talking about that. remembering that. >> it's good news. it will be two, three-hour surgery this morning. they'll know the time of it. it's very good news for her to get this done. >> bob, thanks. appreciate your insight. now, for some other stories developing right now, let's get over to josh elliott. good morning, josh. >> good morning, robin. we begin with big oil which will keep getting its big tax break, at least for now. the senate rejecting a plan by democrats that would repeal tax advantages worth some $2 billion a year to oil companies. republicans argue that its passage would have pushed gas prices even higher. meanwhile, new information is emerging this morning, highlighting that growing lack of trust between the u.s. and pakistan. the cia reportedly flew new, stealth drones into pakistan for months before the may 2nd raid on osama bin laden's compound.
