and a good wednesday morning to everyone. did i see you on letterman last night? or was i blearily-eyed? >> if you blinked, you didn't see me. i had a lot of fun last night. it was great. he's got this new feature called, is it something? >> you remember it so well. we'll share that with you a little bit later. but we do have a lot to talk about this morning. we're tracking reports that one of bin laden's sons escaped the raid on the compound and is missing right now. it could be the sonic named the prince of terror. we'll have the latest details. >> these reports with pakistani sources. also, newt gingrich is going to announce today that he is running for president. here's a first. he's going to do it on twitter. this all comes as donald trump, had been leading the polls, but is dropping fast. and there's a brand-new poll out this morning that shows that president obama is having his strongest polling yet. >> off the death of osama bin laden. we're talking with sam, who is back, because we are keeping our eyes on the swollen mississippi waters, heading south. now, the target is new orleans. let's get right to the dramatic, new air scare. the fourth in three days. lisa stark is tracking this overnight in washington. good morning, lisa. >> reporter: good morning, george. imagine sitting on a plane, sitting on a flight. suddenly, a passenger runs for the emergency exit and tries to open the door mid-flight. it happened late last night on a delta flight. it is just the latest in a series of unsettling incidents in the sky. >> we weren't really sure what happened. >> reporter: it was halfway through delta flight 1102, from orlando to boston, when a passenger bolted for the emergency door and grabbed the handle. he couldn't open it. no one can, mid-flight. but he did set off the alarm and scared the passengers to death. >> they actually brought him to the back of the plane. and put him between two different people so he couldn't get up or anything. >> reporter: the flight landed without incident. and the man, who may have been drunk, will be charged with interfering with a flight crew. >> when we pulled in, six troopers, some of the biggest guys i've ever seen in my entire life, got on. and they looked so serious. and they went streaming to the back. >> reporter: after four mid-flight scary incidents in three days, passengers don't know what to think. this past sunday, another unruly man tried to open the door on a continental flight from houston to chicago. it diverted to st. louis. that same day, a delta flight to san diego, diverted to albuquerque, after a flight attendant found a napkin with the word, "bomb" written on it in the plane's bathroom. on monday, perhaps the most unsettling incident. >> american 1561. we're going to need priority handling in our arrival. >> reporter: a man allegedly tried to enter the cockpit of san francisco-bound american airlines flight, 1561. police say he rammed the door with his shoulder, while shouting, ala akbar, god is great. passengers subdued him. now, he is being held without bail. all scary incidents, unrelated, as far as we know. we should mention, as frightening as it is to have someone try to open the emergency exit in mid-flight, it's impossible to do because of the pressure inside and outside of the aircraft. but it is scary when you see someone trying to do that. >> doesn't make it any less scary. but good to know. new questions about whether one of bin laden's sons escaped during or after that raid that took down osama bin laden. jim sciutto is in islamabad. and looking into whether the so-called prince of terror is on the run. good morning, jim. >> reporter: good morning, robin. ever since the night of that raid, one of the captured wives has been insisting to pakistani investigators that one of bin laden son's is missing. not captured by the pakistanis. not killed by the americans. now, pakistani security officials believe that is true. and it's raising questions about whether he could pose a danger. in the aftermath of the daring, u.s. raid, the first words of one of the captured wives, was that one of the al qaeda leader's sons was missing. pakistani leaders have done a headcount of those believed to be living in the compound and have concluded the same. assad munir, was briefed on the scene. out of 21, 1 person is not accounted for. >> reporter: and it's believed to be a son. >> i believe it's a son. >> reporter: pakistani security officials say that could mean the son was away from the compound at the time of the raid, or escaped in the midst of the confusion. possibility the u.s. officials dismiss. the question is, who? it's leaved that hamad khalid, was killed in the raid. but another son, hamza, seen in this video as a boy, sometimes referred to as the crown prince of terror, was living in the compound. he was credited with writing a poem, praising the july 7th london bombings. and before her assassination in 2007, former pakistani prime minister, benazir bhutto, accused hamza, in public, of being involved in an earlier assassination attempt against her. pakistani officials are also looking into the possibility it was another bin laden's son. bin laden's wives and other children are now being questioned at a safe house in or near islamabad. and they're providing their own treasure trove of intelligence. about bin laden's five years in the compound. u.s. officials have requested their own chance to interrogate the women. but so far, still haven't been granted. another of bin laden's sons, omar, is living in saudi arabia. and other family members have condemned the raid, calling it an illegal assassination of an unarmed man. and others are calling for the release of bin laden's wives and children, saying they've done nothing wrong. we want to bring in brian ross, who has been reporting on osama bin laden for a decade. you have some reporting on this, as well. >> reporter: given what jim has said. we check with u.s. officials who say they're absolutely confident nobody escaped during the raid or after the raid. they know that because they had people on the ground, plus the overhead electronic surveillance that would detect somebody, in pitch-black darkness. it would show up. nobody escaped. nor did the u.s. bring back anybody alive. they brought back one person, the body of osama bin laden. >> if he was in a tunnel orring in like that. >> no indication whatsoever. this is a real mystery. >> does he pose a threat to the u.s.? >> his sons were not in line to take over leadership. that's not how they work there. >> i know you will be back for another report for us. now, to politics. a new poll just out this mornings shows president obama with his highest approval rating in two years. 60% of americans according to the a.p., think the president is doing a good job. and a majority, 53%, say he deserves re-election. this comes as one of the highest-profile republicans formally enter the race, former speaker newt gingrich. >> reporter: newt gingrich will make it official today. i'm told he will announce he is running for president, via twitter. we are told this will be the first official candidate to announce he is running via tweet. he's been one of the most influential americans in a generation. now, newt gingrich, wants to be president. >> the obama administration is wrong. we need to return power from washington to the states. >> reporter: in a way, the campaign is already there. since leaving congress more than a decade ago, gingrich has built something of a conservative empire. a network of advocacy groups that's raised more than $32 million over the last 2 years. and it's taken a hard line against president obama. >> we need a commander in chief with the courage to tell the truth. not a spectator in chief, whose confused whether his job is sicking a soccer ball or leading the united states. >> reporter: he will be able to position himself as the conservative with experience. harkining back to his role in the last republican revolution. >> we're offering the most clear contract with the united states. >> reporter: his contract with america in 1994, helped republicans win control of the house for the first time in 40 years. as speaker of the house, his battles with bill clinton led to two government shutdowns newt's biggest problem may be baggage. political and personal. he's been through two divorces and had an odd explanation for his marital infidelity. >> there's no question that at times in my life, partially driven by how passionately i felt about this country, that i worked far too hard. and that things happened in my life that were not appropriate. >> reporter: newt's campaign begins with a sprint. he's already set up a campaign headquarters in georgia. hired a campaign manager. and set up speeches over the next week in washington, atlanta, illinois, and iowa, where he will have campaign events over four days. let's bring in jake tapper in this conversation, as well to join jon. jake, let me start out with you. it seems like, you know, newt is not at the top. i know you've been talking to the white house and other democratic officials. that newt is not the republican candidate they're most worried about. >> not at all. if they had to pick, democrats i spoke to inside the white house and outside the white house, think the most formidable contender would be utah senator jon huntsman. but they don't think he has a pass to the nomination. another republican they consider formidable, would be indiana governor, mitch samuels. they think former massachusetts governor, mitt romney, and former governor, tim pawlenty, could be formidable challengers. newt gingrich is not on the list of ones they're concerned about. >> and the white house did get the report of 60% approval rating in the latest poll. but they know, this is going to be a close race, no matter what. >> that's exactly right. president obama has told friends he caught lightning in a bottle in 2008. everything went his way. and still, he only won 53% of the vote. with everything going his way. that's 47% of the country that is against him, from the start. they don't think they're going to win over any of them. and so, they say, the republican nominee will start off from a base of 47%. they think this will be a very tough election. it could come down to one vote per precinct, george. >> even if the republican wins as many states as john mccain won, they will pick up more electoral votes. we have seen donald trump, near the top of the republican field, dropping like a stone in a couple of polls. but you still, talking to top republicans. they're still less than satisfied with the full shape of this field. >> oh, george, there is a lot of angst from senior republicans about the field. you've had a speaker of the house, the republican speaker of the house, repeatedly say he thinks more candidates will jump in the race. he would not be saying that if he didn't also want more candidates to jump into the race. speculation, now, george is on indiana governor, mitch daniels. increasingly, republicans think he will run. also, chris christie. they hope he will run. and everybody is waiting for sarah palin. >> and mike huckabee, as well. thank you very much. now, to a story that brian ross broke here first on "gma." outrageous behavior by peace corps officials, dealing with hundreds of female volunteers raped or sexually acaused overseas. this morning on capitol hill, a congressional committee will call the peace corps on the carpet. >> reporter: what we found in our investigation, was the peace corps often blamed the victims and forced them to quit after assaults on them. some of the woman tell their story to congress this morning. and there will be at least one surprise witness. for years, harvard professor caristen cohen, hid the secret. when she saw the abc news report of former volunteers, reporting how they were mistreated as rape victims by the peace corps, she decided she could no longer stay silent and will testify today in washington. >> what horrified me is nothing has changed in 20 years. i felt like i had no choice to come forward. >> reporter: she was attacked in broad daylight at a friend's home. and then, she says, victimized a second time when the peace corps official in washington, blaming her for what happened. >> i walk into her office. and the first thing she says to me is, i'm so sick of you girls going out with men, drinking and dancing. and when something happens, you call it rape. >> reporter: really? >> and i felt like someone had just kicked me in the stomach. >> reporter: that same sense of feeling blamed was what the former volunteers described to us in our original abc news investigation. >> i just gave up. i just gave up. >> reporter: the peace corps says it's not his policy to blame volunteers. but the agency's current training video seems to do just that. with victims appearing on camera, to describe what they had supposedly done wrong to bring on their attackers. >> looking back, there's certainly other ways that i could have -- other choices that i could have made. >> reporter: professor koenen was outraged to learn of the peace corps video, calling it farmful to victims of assault. >> people need to know this is a chronic problem that the peace corps has been unwilling and unable to change. >> reporter: and she ought to know. the professor says, since leaving the peace corps has earned her ph.d. and is a leading specialist on treating victims of trauma. the director of the peace corps, aaron, will have a lot to answer before in his appearance before congress today. and he is that is a huge problem. this water is absolutely filthy. filled with garbage, sewage, runoff from farmland upstream. and officials here are sounding a health alarm, telling residents not to step in it unless they're protected with boots or some type of rubber protection. to the south, in the mississippi delta, they're now placing plastic along the levee walls. officials they're saying they're concerned that as the water rises, the water will overtop the levees and then begin to erode the side walls. and, josh, that's something they say just can't happen. >> so many elements to this
