him. we talk to kyron's parents. and "american idol" takes central park. the entire top ten is here, performing live in our summer concert series. ♪ school's out for summer boy. no slowing down going into the weekend. a lot of breaking news overnight, starting with the russian spies. the ten suspected russian spies, sent back, in exchange for four people convicted of spying on russia for us. many of the russian spies have children. and their fate is unclear. some appear to be going to russia. at least one is still here. we're going to talk to his father's lawyer this morning. we'll also hear from the attorney for anna chapman. she, of course, is the red-headed, so-called socialite spy. you had a late night, as well. >> to the boys and girls club for lebron james' announcement. he is headed to the miami heat, with a trail of broken hearts behind him. and the cleveland cavaliers' owner, ripped into lebron james. accused him of deserting cleveland. predicting him of bad karma. i sat down with lebron james. >> that was the only interview he gave after the special. >> he got on the plane and headed to miami. you heard about paul the octopus, who is picking the world cup winners. we tried to get an octopus ourselves. it was beyond our producers. >> who did we get? >> the newest member of the stephanopoulos family, daisy stephanopoulos, is going home today. but before she goes home, she is going to predict the world cup winner. >> what have i gotten myself into? >> what family am i joining. we're going to begin with the spy swap. from new york to moscow. and we begin here with abc news chief investigator correspondent, brian ross. >> reporter: just like in the days of the cold war, the spy swap took place in vienna, once again, the center of international intrigue. the swap took place on the vienna air airport. the plane on the right, vision air, chartered by the u.s. government, held the ten russian spies from new york, in the custody of u.s. marshals. the plane on the left, the russian plane. once the swap was done, the russian plane flew on to moscow. and the u.s. plane returned to the states. bringing to an end the 12-day saga that has reminded the world that secret agents and invisible ink are not a thing of the past. the ten left new york last night for the eight-hour flight to vienna. in the custody of u.s. marshals throughout the trip. u.s. officials said, they wanted the ten to carry a message to russian spy headquarters. moscow center. >> if you come to america, you spy on americans, in america, you will be exposed and arrested. >> reporter: under a deal worked out with the u.s. and russia, the ten pleaded guilty in court thursday, to one criminal count of acting as unregistered agents of a foreign country. they were sentenced to time already served, just 11 days. and then, ordered expelled from the country. the attorney for 28-year-old anna chapman, the alluring redhead, said she was relieved to be going home to mother russia. >> i can tell you, if she probably had to do it over again, she wouldn't do it. >> reporter: officials said the grade school daughters of the new jersey couple that went by the name of murphy, were also on the spy swap plane last night. the two sons of the accused spy couple in cambridge, massachusetts, age 16 and 20, were reported to have left for moscow on wednesday night. >> i would have been completely discombobulated if i found out my parents were spies. >> reporter: the day was described as one of mourning for this teenage boy. juan lazaro jr., whose parents were sent to russia last night, as he was left behind. his mother, vicky pelaez, and father, juan lazaro sr. as his parents flew home to russia, it was not clear when or how they would see their son again. the four people sent west, include a scientist and three former military and intelligence officials. and american officials are now saying even though it wasn't an even trade, ten for four, the u.s. got the better deal. >> because the spies working for us, give better information. >> reporter: who knows what they got? >> brian ross, thanks very much. we want to get the reaction in russia to all of this. abc's alex marquardt has been talking to people in russia. what are they saying, alex? >> reporter: good morning, george. i'm in front of the apartment building where anna chapman's family lives. they're sitting by the phone, waiting for a call. her mother insists she's done nothing wrong. this hasn't gotten the reaction in russia than it has in the states. it's been a much smaller story. people were amused that the ten people were considered spies, given the basic techniques they were using and the lack of access to confidential and classified information. it hasn't been a big story on the radio or in newspapers. this is the dately newspaper, "kommersant." it's a small story here, below the fold. many people we had spoken to, didn't know about the spy swap. and many who did, said these people were pawns in a political chess game. george? >> thanks, alex. joining us now, robert baum, the attorney for anna chapman. and janice peduto. one of the things to come out oaf this investigation, your client reportedly told prosecutors he felt more loyalty to his service to russia than to his own son. will his son be staying here in the united states? >> he has the option of going to russia with him or to stay in the united states. he was born here in the united states. >> will he stay? >> we don't know that yet. >> you just don't know. what is your client telling you? >> right now, it's his option. he can stay here. or he can go to russia, with his parents. you know, he's been here all his life. >> did he really tell the prosecutors that he had more loyalty to russia than his own son? >> we didn't get a chance to look at the statement. it happened so fast. we didn't go into details. >> you said your client, anna chapman, if to do it all over again, she probably wouldn't do it again. >> yes. >> why did she do it? >> that's a question for anna chapman. i can't answer that for her. what she did was minimal under the statute that she was charged. i'm not saying she's not guilty. but her conduct was different than anyone else charged. >> how is she doing now, now that she's headed back. >> i think she would have preferred to stay here. she had a business here. a business that she had established in moscow. she would have preferred to stay in this country and work on her business. >> how do you explain that contradiction? on the one hand, spying for russia. but wanting to stay here and profit in the united states. >> well, i think it's easy to categorize it as spying. but the only conduct that anyone claims she ever did was to communicate with a laptop with an agent of the russian federation. she never met with anyone. she never accepted any money. and she never did anything else except -- >> she was passing along messages. >> but messages, she was passing, without being specific, were never identified by the government. and the messages, if they were identified, would have been very trivial, everyday information. no secrets whatsoever. >> but the prosecutor said the case was devastating. >> i think they have to say that about every case. >> your client did plead guilty. if it wasn't spying, what was it? what was she doing? >> what she was doing was, she was -- at this point, i would have to be telling you what the communications was. i can only tell you that she didn't pass money. she didn't go to face-to-face meets. in fact, george, the only time she was ever asked to do anything, she refused to do it. she met with an undercover fbi agent who asked her to pass a forged passport to another person. she refused. not only did she refuse, she turned the passport into police. >> and your client was a spy for russia. >> he admits that. that's correct. >> what will he do now? >> he will go back to russia. and he has the option to go anywhere in the world after that. it wasn't clear to me what his plans were. he's 66 years old. >> the lawyers for his wife have said that she was offered a stipen from the russian government of $2,000 a month. what was your client offered by the russians? >> nothing. >> nothing at all? >> that's correct, nothing. >> do you suspect he will stay in russia? >> i don't know. >> and what's next for anna chapman? i read that she plans -- is thinking about suing her ex-husband for releasing those tabloid photos. >> she was more magnanimous toward her husband than i would have been, about the statements he made and the photos he released. she was disappointed in the way he acted. and she felt betrayed by him. her next step is to be reunited with her family. >> in russia? >> in russia. she is happy to be out of jail. that was a primary consideration underlining her guilty plea. after that, she wants to establish her business again. >> some reports that she wants to end up in london? >> she spent most of her adult life there. she was married at the age of 21. and lived in the united kingdom for almost seven years. before she came to the united states. she may wish to go there. but right now, i think she wants to re-establish her business. >> bottom line, she wants to be a businesswoman, not a spy. >> she always was a businesswoman. whether she was a spy remains to be seen. >> thank you both very much. >> thank you. >> robin? >> all right, george. thank you. going to turn, now, to basketball superstar, lebron james. after much speculation and anticipation, king james announced he is leaving his hometown team, the cleveland cavaliers to play for the miami heat. john berman was in greenwich, connecticut, when the reigning mvp made the announcement last night. >> reporter: we were both there last night. it was one of the most surreal things i've ever seen. everyone on the planet waiting for lebron james to break the news. and that news clearly broke some hearts. at last, the wait was over. king james announced, he was moving his court. >> i'm going to take my talents to south beach and join the miami heat. >> reporter: that cheer you heard -- the jubilation in florida. that groan you heard. the desperation in cleveland. the kid who was born in akron, lived his whole life in ohio and loomed as a giant for seven years for the cavaliers, said he was leaving. and cleveland did not like being left. >> this is the worst thing that could ever happen to cleveland, since modell taking the browns away. bottom line. >> reporter: these were the flames of a scorn lover. in an open letter overnight, the cavaliers' owner told fans, you simply don't deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal. >> one thing i didn't want to do was make an emotional decision. and i wanted to do what was best, you know, for lebron james. >> reporter: james said, it's about winning. in miami, he'll join megastars dwayne wade and chris bosh. they played together on the gold medal olympic dream team. and by some accounts have been plotting to play together again for years. there are wins to be won and money to be made. by some estimates, lebron james brought the city of cleveland an additional $150 million in revenue every year. ticket sales, t-shirts, bars and restaurants. now, that moves to miami. and this drama went late into the night. at 3:00 a.m., there was this tweet from king james. he said, what's up, y'all? just landed in my new home. thanks to all the fans of the miami organization who greet med. the road to history, he said, starts now. robin, that road, clearly a painful one for cleveland. >> it is. he just opened that account this week. the twitter account. yeah. and before he took off, just moments after that espn broadcast, i had a chance to sit down with lebron james, in a "gma" exclusive, to find out what went into this difficult decision. are you relieved that the decision has been made public? >> i am relieved. but this is everything that i envisioned. and i said the destination where i'm headed, which is miami. but the whole process. the whole process has been very humbling. >> when you say the process, describe a little bit more. >> you start with hearing everyone. and hearing the six teams that i had. i wanted to hear what they had to say. how they envisioned myself being part of their franchise. but the process also came down to me sitting down with my friends and my family. and saying, you know, the pros versus the cons. you know, this city versus that city. or whatever the case may be. >> you pulled out the sheet and did pros and cons? >> she's going home for the first time today. >> that's sweet. we'll start with the startling, new information in the kyron horman's case. kyron's father is now speaking out and making harsh charges against his wife, kyron's stepmother. he believes she was involved in his disappearance. and tried to hire someone to murder him. mike von fremd is in portland, for us. and you got a chance to sit down with kaine and kyron's mom, desiree. >> reporter: i did, george. and it was a heartbreaking interview. the boys parents want to go public. they want to share personal, new details about their 7-year-old son. and something they say may help bring their boy home alive. this mother is devastated each day her son's room remains empty. >> i can't bring myself to put his laundry away. and i won't make his bed. when i walk in there, i want to feel he's still in the room. >> reporter: she says she does not believe kyron's stepmother, terri, when she was toll over the phone that the boy went missing at school. >> there were details that didn't make sense to me. and gave me that sick to my stomach feeling. >> reporter: desiree says the stepmother is not telling the truth. >> unfortunately, i'm kind of at that point where i'm so angry, i don't even have words. i just really want her to do the right thing. and i can't say it enough. that kyron is still out there. and he needs to be home. >> reporter: the father's handwritten petition for a judge for a restraining order has now been made public. kaine horman writing, i believe respondent, terri, is involved in the disappearance of my son, kyron. i also recently learned that respondent hired someone to murder me. you married this woman. you must have loved her? >> absolutely. >> reporter: do you feel betrayed? >> absolutely. >> i think we all do. >> reporter: it was a blended family. it was a happy family? >> yeah. yep. >> reporter: what's hard for everyone to understand is how it can be a happy family if you have somebody who you were saying may have done something unthinkable. >> have you ever been with somebody that can disguise and put on that face that you just can't see what they're thinking or feeling? that's what it's like. >> reporter: for the first time, the father offered what he thinks may be a possible motive. he says terri changed after the birth of their baby 19 months ago. >> she went through some postpartum depression after the birth. and her emotional state was just more erratic. >> reporter: do you think there's a possibility that the woman you're legally married to could be innocent? >> i think that the percentages are so small that i have no optimism in that regard, no. >> reporter: can she keep this up? >> i would like to think not because my son's involved. baa but i have a feeling that she'll never, ever give in. >> i don't think she's going to tell the truth. >> she hasn't told the truth for 7 1/2 years that i've known her. >> reporter: both parents say the stepmother has failed two lie detector tests. that has not been confirmed by investigators, who has also not charged the stepmother with a crime. george? >> mike, thank you very much. we're going to turn to the controversial verdict in a case of a transit officer that shot and killed a black man in california. it's sparking violent protests in the streets. david wright has the details from oakland. david? >> reporter: george, we're standing in front of a sears store here in oakland, california. this mattress used to be part of a display. it's on the street. everything else has been carried away. looters ransacked a local foot locker store. they set dumpsters on fire. and oakland police in riot gear spent most of the night chasing an unruly mob through the streets. all of this touched off by unhappiness over that police verdict in the shooting that took place new year's day. but it's important to note that authorities here say that the protests themselves were peaceful. a lot of this damage appears to have been caused by troublemakers looking to take advantage. george? is it a little steamy? a little hot on stage? and i have to ask you. people are into the "twilight" movies. but there is a new fad. does your teenager want to be a vampire? there's a new phenomenon. the teenagers are biting each other, trying to be like a vampire. we'll talk about that coming up. also getting into the movie that captured the hearts of america. an oscar for sandra bullock, of course. that's "the blind side" that tells the story of the tuohy family. this morning, we'll have the real-life tuohy family to tell their story. everybody's looking forward to that. first, we have to get some news. let's go to juju chang. >> good morning, everyone. the biggest spy swap since the cold war is a done deal this morning. ten russian spice were turned over by the u.s. on a tarmac in vienna, in exchange for a scientist and three military intelligence officials. most of the children of the russian agents were also on the charter plane. but at least one of them, juan lazaro jr., opted to stay in the u.s. for now. the u.s. is demanding immediate answers and detailed timelines from bp on its efforts to speed up oil containment in the gulf. jeffrey kofman joins us from onboard a coast guard boat at ground zero for the cleanup operation. good morning to you, jeffrey. >> reporter: good morning, juju. in fact, we were the first journalists allowed to spend the night here at the spill site. you can see, what a dramatic site. but at night, haunting. the efforts to contain the oil. right now, the two flames, each about 1,000 degrees fahrenheit, are burning off oil. over the weekend, a third ship will come onboard. and they hope to contain most of the oil. >> our challenge from day one is, every day that we remove oil, we remove a lot of oil, both through skimming and burning. and what's being pulled up from the bottom, is this is a constant spill. every day, you start from zero again. >> reporter: now, that should change, as i say, over the weekend. but the real focus behind me is that relief well. the lead relief well is down more than 17,000. bp has moved up the target for killing the well in july. but that could come possibly in a week or ten days. juju? >> one thing we know about sexuality and biting and vampires, it's passion. it's all-encompassing. it's an extension of the hicky. it's marking someone else and showing passion. >> reporter: 16-year-old michael kapler says he's been biting his girlfriend on and off for about a year. >> for me, really, biting is a way to show affection towards the other person. and to just get a crazy adrenaline rush. >> reporter: michael says he never bites to draw blood. but he knows people who do. >> i think a lot of people draw blood because they want to feel powerful. >> reporter: 15-year-old paula hernandez says a boyfriend once tried to pressure her into biting. >> he said, it's because i love you. and that's the way i want to show you. and i didn't want to give in because it's idiotic. >> reporter: and paula says some of her classmates mimicking on-screen vampires are cutting into each other's skin to taste each other's blood. >> they have your blood in them. so, it makes them closer to each other. >> reporter: many teens are posting their adventures in biting all over youtube. there's even facebook pages devoted to the subject. doctors caution that breaking the skin can lead to serious illness, including hepatitis, syphilis and hiv. up to 15% of bites can become infected. >> for the same reason that we never thought becoming blood brothers or blood sisters was a big deal. it was one of these rites of passages years ago. we learn every day and recognize there's some things we just shouldn't do. >> reporter: even "twilight" star robert pattinson jokes with david letterman about the biting craze. >> there was a guy, maybe 230-pound guy at the premiere. kind of hispanic-looking. and he was asking me to bite him, as well. and so, it's like -- so, i did. >> reporter: they're not real. but the undead are everywhere in pop culture. taking over the world in best-sellers. to shows like "true blood." even "private practice" talked about biting as young, obsessive love. >> we love each other. >> that's nice. it shouldn't involve biting so hard that it draws blood. >> it's just a sign of what we are to each other. >> reporter: missy wahl runs teen contact in dallas. and finds that biting has become a love tap. >> it's a way to cross another line. it's become a big phenomenon. >> reporter: with all of the biting and blood-drawing, what happens to the kiss? >> kissing is always going to be around. but biting is like an add-on or something. it's like putting a case on your iphone. it's just an add-on. makes it look prettier. >> like putting a case on your iphone. there are real health risks here. turns out human bites are more prone to infection than animal bites. you could end up in the hospital with i.v. antibiotics. but parents of teenagers know that scare tactics don't work. so, most experts say start a conversation. get to the why? what do you mean by it? >> it came from her when we were passing michael on the street. it wasn't a whisper, either. she turned to me, as we were in the car. she said, turn around. our challenge is in the line of the movie theater. turn around, talk to the person behind you. walking down the hallway. people walk by people. and they value them as they walk by. turn around and meet that person. you'll change your opinion and your value of that person when you get to know them. >> it's not just about writing the check. it's about making that personal contact. >> the true meaning that we want people to know, is it's great to write a check. everyone needs money. the financial need is there. but you know what? it's more important to give of your time and of yourself and of your talents. that's what makes a difference. michael's life necessarily wouldn't have been changed if we just wrote a check. he needed our time and our attention. and that's what kids need. and there's kids falling through the cracks of this society every, single day. and they need our time. and if you just look, right beside you, get off the main street. get off the beaten path. there's michael oheres blocks from us. he almost fell through the cracks in society. he's a starting tack until the nfl. extremely smart. >> and the entire country now knows his story. knows your story. and this is really giving an opportunity to share this message on a much wider stage. >> you couldn't have said it better. that's -- obviously, this isn't something that we requested or probably even want. but it's something we feel we're in possession of. and we have to do it. and people have been so wonderful to really get onboard. you can't imagine the letters we get on a daily basis. and it isn't people asking for things. it's people telling us what they're doing. i think that's what the movie did. and i think michael's life has proven to people. you couldn't have been further down than he was. and i don't know if you can be higher than he is now. and so, the gap is what really interested people. that's kind of what we said. you know, when people talk about, why did you do it? we don't know that we did anything. >> you couldn't have imagined, i suppose, what difference it would end up making. >> we wouldn't have done it, probably. >> has it changed your life a lot since the movie? >> that's a stupid question. people ask that. >> why is that a stupid question? it's the question that everybody wants to know the answer to. >> sandra bullock won an oscar. everything in her life. and she adopts a baby. yes. >> spend fridays in central park with george stephanopoulos. nothing has changed. >> nothing? you have gotten close to sandra, right? you met louie? >> yes. spent time. >> you want to raise another baby. >> spent time with tim and faith. everyone is saying with the movie, the book. sally jenkins, who wrote the book. we never knew sally before this. she's a member of our family now. we have had nothing but a pleasurable journey since it started. we're lucky it turned out that way. >> did you give sandra advice on how to raise an adopted son? >> she gives me advice. >> she wants to take him to the acting side. i want him on the football field. >> they're truly fighting how to direct louie. >> conflict there. >> you will be facing emptiness. m.j.'s almost done? >> yeah. a junior in high school. a couple more years. >> adopt again? >> we're going to go where god takes us. >> we didn't go out to adopt. we get a lot of credit. that's great. give us that. but the truth is, we weren't happy with the two we had. we weren't going after another one. but really, we feel -- it's the only explanation that makes any sense. we feel that michael was sent to us. and we were smart enough not to turn our backs on the miracle that came to us. >> it's clear that you are touched by some joy. and i love the phrase cheerful giving. how do people get that? >> well, we feel it's an easy process. it comes from the bible. it comes from corinthians. it says god loves the cheerful giver. our feeling is, this is what we say in the book. it doesn't matter how big or small. if you do it with a happy heart, you'll do it again. once you realize how fun it is, you'll continually do it. if you don't like what you're doing, you'll stop. if you're not a cheerful giver, god says he doesn't want it anyway. so, why do it?
