>> i heard somebody gasping from the audience, you know, back where the public stood. and heard somebody saying, no, no. then i heard other people weeping back in the public area. and i thought, wow, it took me a minute -- then i could see amanda. >> reporter: and what did she to? because she obviously does speak italian and understood exactly? >> yeah, she put her head down and started to cry. >> reporter: what did you do? >> it's all this weird memory that i don't remember. i cried. some of the lawyers were crying. it was chaos. >> reporter: within moments, amanda was whisked out of the courtroom into a van and back into a prison cell. as her devastated family left court, they vowed to appeal a lengthy and expensive process for a family that has already spent their life savings on their daughter's defense. how will you do this? will you move here? >> we will do whatever it takes to support amanda. >> reporter: obviously, you were hoping for making arrangements to fly her home? >> yeah, absolutely. >> reporter: what do you say to people who say, she was found guilty, she must have done something that night, something horrible? >> all over the world, and this just italy, it's in the united states, everywhere, that truly innocent people are found guilty. and this is one of those cases. she's innocent. >> reporter: this weekend, amanda's family was allowed into the prison to see her for the first time since the verdict. and what did you say, each of you, to amanda when you saw her yesterday? what was the last thing you said to her? >> you'll get out of here, don't worry. keep your chin up, courage. that's what her lawyers told her. told all of us. what? what was that? >> that we need courage. to be strong for amanda. that this is not the end that they will fight for her and she will get out thereof. >> reporter: in the meantime, the diplomatic reverberations continue to go through italy. they called it unfair possible the jury not impartial. she has asked secretary of state hillary clinton to look into the trial. >> stay with us. i know you'll be in the next hour to talk about anti-americanism on the verdict. and now chris cuomo's got the other stop stories. >> top story is is that this is your last week on "gma." the state dinner security lapse involving tarek and michaele salahi is only the latest. documents show 91 failures at secret service checkpoints since 1980. among the known violators, richard weaver who slipped by security four times, device with the last president bush. and another incident, a family with a minivan was allowed on grounds in 1982, they simply drove up to the gate and honked their horn. the key words -- security update. for weeks, the focus has been on afghanistan. but we have a headline out of iraq. iraqi lawmakers said they may delay the national election until late february or later. it was supposed to be held january 16th. plans have called for the bulk of u.s. forces to withdraw 60 days after the election. well, delegates for nearly 200 countries are converging on copenhagen, denmark, for the largest summit ever. their goal is to win commitments from nations rich and poor to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. president obama's proposal calls for a 17% reduction in the emissions by 2020. but congress still has to chime in on that. and finally, we've got a lot of bruce springsteen fans here. a highlight, listen. ♪ >> that's not bruce, that's sting, but his music celebrating bruce. that's sting producing "the rising." the boss was among five honored. mel brooks, robert de niro, jazz pianist dave brubeck and grace bumbry. >> you had so much fun on the road at the holiday lights? >> it was so much fun. good morning, everyone. right now, get ready. it's a big winter storm and it takes most of the country before this week is over. those signs in the air were as early as last friday in houston where that earliest hit of snow ever recorded in houston eclipsed it by just a few days of the 2008 system. and then from wls in chicago land lets you know there's snow on the way. this is a small system, but what 2 does, it steps in the reinforcing shot of cold air waiting for the next shot, a western storm on its way to spread moisture in the middle of the country and deliver an awful lot of snow. this morning, there are blizzard warnings for three states, arizona looking around salt lake city as well. as we get into the day tomorrow, we're going to watch all of that spread a little east, so just north of chicago, well of minneapolis and green bay there will be another hit of winter. these are the states that will see snow by the time we're into wednesday into thursday. that's an awful lot of the country. so there's a huge winter storm to talk about. and we're dealing with that, salt lake city at 17. denver at 17. that's your forecast. so so it's a little dose of snow in the great lakes, but we've got a lot more to talk about coming this week across the country. robin? >> can you see me behind the christmas tree? >> i can. >> good to have you back. as we told you earlier, this will be a critical two weeks for president obama as he makes a big push on two critical issues, health care and jobs. and of course, last week, he announced a new policy concerning afghanistan. we're going to get a presidential report from bill o'reilly, "the new york times" best-seller on the list for 49 weeks with his bold fresh piece of humanity. and also, of course, the host of "the o'reilly factor" on fox news. let's give a report card on three fronts. let's start with health care. >> health care, i'd say "d" as in dog. and the reason is, we need health care. i think everybody understands in america it's chaotic now. but you can't be putting out a 2,000-page bill which the senate did, and president obama has not been able to explain it. i mean, it's our job to watch him when he goes on tv to try to explain it? >> right. >> do you understand any of this? i don't. >> but we do know, if something is passed, harry truman couldn't get anything passed. president clinton couldn't get anything passed. it will be an historic moment. >> that's good. but we won't understand what it is. hey, it's historic, but we don't know what it is! >> i think i heard you say it's imperfect in a lot of ways but if we do nothing that would be worse. >> all we want, robin, all i'm pleading for, i want to understand a bill that's going to cost a trillion dollars and nobody can explain it. and he can't explain it, that's why he gets a "d." >> how be the jobs. >> "b" for boy for jobs. because more boys have jobs. it's very encouraged that this month the unemployment rate went down even though it's the christmas/hanukkah season. we had chaos, and obama stepped in and did a lot of things that people criticized him for. so i think he stabilized the economy to some extent. so i'm giving him a "b" on the jobs front. >> we got great news. great news being 11,000 job lost last month. when you look at the beginning of the year, 700,000 -- >> that's right. that's why he gets a "b." >> and now afghanistan? >> "c." took far too long to make a decision. that helped the taliban and it rattled pakistan. all right? pakistan is scared. they don't know what the usa is go to do so pakistan isn't going to invest in their army and their blood unless they know that we're growing to be in that region. by taking too long, he gave the taliban encouragement and rattled pakistan. the benefit that came out of taking too long is he sent a message to karzai, you better clean it up. but i have to give him a "c" there because i think he could have acted more decisively. his speech at west point was not good. he needed a little general patton in there. he should have said we're going to kick some you know what. >> but you were not critical as some others were about the time line. >> the time line what do you mean? >> about the time line of withdrawing troops? >> no, no, he has to say that to get the europeans to cooperate. we're not going to be there forever, but help us now. but when it comes right down to it, is obama going to pull them out? if it's an intense in afghanistan? he's not. he didn't do in iraq. look, i know why these guys do it and why they do it. all the idealogs were saying -- that's bull. they won't pull them out unless it's hopeless. >> it's a mixed bag. the remaining time, my friend, diane sawyer. you can't give her a grade. >> diane sawyer? >> for "good morning america" all these years? >> yes. >> just getting up. just getting up, you get a "b"-plus. showing up at this morning at this hour, a "b"-plus. that's what you start with, robin, then if you do anything intelligent in three hours, it bumps to the "a." some days you do, some days you don't. particularly, cuomo. >> sorry about that, chris. >> i was getting a "b"-plus. >> i'm excited for diane hosting "jimmy kimmel"? that's what she's doing, right? >> thank you, merry christmas, everybody. and now, we go to the queen. she's lashing out against the paparazzi, but is she also just a grandmother. here's nick watt. >> reporter: the queen is laying down the law. after years of running from the flash bulbs and a stiff upper lip, the royals are baring their teeth, fighting the paparazzi. >> in my past years, i think it's turned around. >> reporter: but they can't just win. the get-tough policy is fueling rumors about what's really going on behind closed royal doors. >> i think it's more to do with prince william and kate middleton and probably an announcement coming next year of their engagement. >> reporter: are they laying the ground rules for a royal wedding? >> they know there is going to be such a media frenzy, because we've been waiting so long. >> reporter: the book makers, a wedding planner just joined the royal staff. >> william has to get married sometime. >> reporter: and kate already suffered in the glare. princess diana, of course, was killed while being chased by the paparazzi. harry once took a swing at a snapper. william has complained. but this time, it's official. no more shots, i quote, the private activities of them or their friends. will private activity be william slipping a ring on kate's finger? what is the key piece of evidence against her? >> the key pieces of evidence really started with the inconsistencies. the statement that she save to police where she changed her story. she originally said she had nothing to do with the murder. and then during an overnight interrogation without a lawyer and partially without an interpreter. she said she heard meredith screaming. that resonated with the jury. prosecutors say a knife had dna from both amanda and meredith on it. here again, the dna was microscopic and may not have been admitted in the united states. finally, what is termed her inappropriate behavior. she was criticized her kissing her former boyfriend outside of the murder scene, turning cartwheels at the police station. much has raised their suspicions. >> again, the question is, how do you overturn on appeal evidence like this, evidence like strange behavior? just a moment ago, i spoke with two experts, renowned lawyer theodore simon. what will the defense have to do with the alleged strange behavior? the alleged strange behavior is not that strange. we need to focus on the evidence, or in fact, the lack of evidence. let's keep in mind there was no hair, no shoe print, handprint, palm print. no sweat, no saliva, no blood, no dna of amanda knox in the room where meredith kercher was found on her body. >> yes, judy? >> the main thing you have to do on appeal in italy is say that the law, the italian law has been wrongly applied. you cannot reargue the case. it's very much like in the united states, appeals have to be -- have to say, look, the law wasn't followed. >> i think for a lot of its to learn and be told that this is a cultural difference in the courtroom -- >> it is -- >> -- what is the difference? you said do not get in trouble in italy? what do you mean? >> i lived in italy 4 1/2 years, the one thing you find out, constitutionally, theoretically, the person is found innocent until proven guilty. in reality, that does not exist. if you are accused, you will very likely get convicted if it goes far enough. the moment they sent amanda knox for over a year to jail before her trial, i sort of figured they were intent on finding her guilty. and she didn't have a chance. and there's another aspect to it, which is she's an outsider. if you are an outsider, particularly a foreigner, you don't know a lot of famous, powerful people, you are sunk, more so in the live than the united states. >> particularly american. do you think this is anti-americanism? >> i would focus on more the lack of evidence. it's both compelling and profound. the real problem was an enormous avalanche of negative ptrial evidence and when those two meet, it's hard to overcome the scant evidence. you can say were we surprised at this verdict? you can't say that we're surprised at what happened. again, the evidence is scant. >> judy, anti-americanism? >> that is the classic way of doing business, though. you are first tried in the press. in this instance, amanda knox was not only tried in the italian press, because the victim was british, she was tried in the british president. both media found her totally guilty. jurors are not sequestered in italy. they are allowed to talk to the press. read the press. do anything they want to do. some of them said they found her guilty long before the trial was over. >> from what you know, judy, of the italian court system, i know you speak italian, too, will she win on appeal? >> she might. there's a possibility. if italy is ashamed enough of what it did, and that's going to take some undoing. right now, you mentioned anti-americanism. there is the feeling that she's the classic american seductress, i'm putting that in quotes. and she might win on appeal, but it will take a lot of influence, i gather they're trying to get hillary clinton in on it. and it's going to take a lot of clout, a lot of work, i'm afraid. >> yes, she was asked yesterday by george stephanopoulos, and she said, so far, she has not said anything to italy about it, secretary clinton did. what about it, win on appeal? >> well, there's certainly a distinct opportunity and possibility of winning on appeal. you know, the theory of the prosecution wasn't really made out by the evidence. i mean, all you have to do is ask yourself, here you have a youthful, college exchange student with no prior record, no history of violence in her background. yet, somehow, she's miraculously transformed into a evil murderer. it just doesn't make center. if you get passed that question, you ask yourself, how is it there's one one scintilla of forensic evidence found on amanda knox of meredith kercher on her body. >> we understand it takes 90 days. we thank you both and we expect "good morning america" will be talking to you again as this proceeds. so grateful to you both. >> thank you. >> thank you. let's head to sam champion for the weather. a lot of people waiting to get dressed, sam. tell them. we've got to say fog in houston after that big winter hit but we're going to show you pictures out of the houston live where the fog will burn off as the day goes on.biggest storm is where the storm is developing in the west. we're looking for snow, ground level. not just in the mountains. mountains outside of l.a. at well. once that storm gets moving and cranking, it's got plenty of cold air to spread. from the great lakes to the intermountain west. here's that cold blast of air that even follows that storm. we've got another one even behind that, but it's going to be a couple weeks of wintry weather. seattle in the 30s. minneapolis dropping down. these numbers 25 to 16 degrees. in some cases, montana and south dakota, the numbers will be about four degrees lower. and there is winter in an awful lot of locations. meanwhile, well ahead of this, fairly quiet in the northeast. 42 degrees in new york. 43 in boston, although new york >> all >> all that weather was brought to you by chili's, diane?
