It became a Tropical Storm this afternoon in the gulf of mexico and the impact is already being felt in florida. Where theyre getting heavy rain and flooding. How could it impact us here in Central North CarolinaTropical Storm hermine has strengthened in the gulf of mexico and now has winds of 45 mph. The storm is moving slowly to the north and northeast, but is forecast to pick up speed as it turns more to the northeast. Hermine is expected to make tomorrow night. But the forecast track has shifted again and this change has big implications for the weather in Central North Carolina. Hermine is now forecast to track across Central North Carolina late friday into early saturday. This is a first alert weather app. The Hurricane Tracker lets you see where the storm is right now. A judge in durham tossed out his murder conviction in a double murder case from 1995. Because of dna howards case was prosecuted by mike nifong. Who was disbarred for lying. And misconduct in the duke lacrosse case. Prosecutors decided not to appeal the judges order which cleared the way for howard to be released this afternoon. New tonight governor pat mccrory responding to the supreme courts decision not to reinstate voter id requirements for novembers election. The court rejected a request by mccrory and other state officials to delay a Lower Court Ruling that found the state law was tainted by racial discrimination. The ruling means voters won november and early voting goes back to 17 days. The governor released a statement saying in part North Carolina has been denied basic Voting Rights already granted to more than 30 other states to protect the integrity of one person one vote through a commonsense voter id law. The ndoublea cp which sued to stop the voter id laws also put out a statement saying in part quote we urge the state of North Carolina and gov. Mccrory to accept as the today that racially discriminatory laws have no place at the ballot box. Schools back in session across the state. And the teachers in those classrooms are a big focus of the november election. This afternoon some of those educators shared their opinions. About the claims being made in campaign ads. Governor mccrory taking calls the largest teacher Salary Increase in state history. His opponent, roy cooper, says otherwise. And today, the Teachers Association gave the governors math, a failing grade. By now, youve seen the ads on tv. Under governor mccrorys leadership, North Carolina teachers enjoyed the largest teacher pay increase in the country. We have boosted teacher pay to more than 50,000. Our education barometer as governor. But teachers painted a much bleaker forecast. Outside the North Carolina association of educators in raleigh. On this pay day for many school districts. Teacher after teacher. With decades of experience. Said the governors claims are bogus. Let me assure you i am making well under 50,000 a year. I was most disrespected today when i looked at my check stub; no raise the ncae blasting the governor and the republicanled prioritizing tax cuts for wealthier north carolinians over public education. Meantime, governor mccrory was in clayton meeting with teachers in a closeddoor meeting where were told salary was discussed. And late monday, the governors education advisor. Were fully confident that our facts bear out whats true. Pushed back on the ncaes claims that the governors 50,000 figure is based on bad math. My response to that is, i would ask them, how much did your pay go up administration. The answer is teacher salaries froze in 2009 in the midst of the great recession. In 2012. Mccrorys first year. No raise. And pay hikes since then. Have bumped North Carolina teacher salaries. Up from 47th to 41st in the nation. The truth is, despite this Election Year raise, some of our most experienced educators have been getting shortchanged for years. There will also be a threat for isolated tornadoes to the east of the center. If this track verifies, the threat for heavy rain will also spread into much of central and eastern North Carolina. Rainfall amounts of 4 inches or more least in some areas. The heaviest rain should fall friday night into early saturday. Gusty winds to 45 mph will also be possible, which combined with the heavy rain, could down some trees. The rain should taper off from the south during the day saturday, and the pleasant weather weve been talking about should arrive for weekend. Remember, were still two days away. The forecast track has shifted considerably in the last two days, and it may shift another delay in the i40 zone in wake county. When the next traffic shift is coming.
