Everything youre supposed to do. Now, trumps fifth Campaign Event in northeast ohio since labor day. Later he said hes for bringing backstop and frisk tactics in violent neighborhoods. And Hillary Clinton not in ohio, but addressing police shoot information the tulsa and violent after the in charlotte on the campaign trail. Everyone must Work Together to stop the violence. Look, i know i dont have i dont know anyone who does, but this is certain too many people have lost their lives who shouldnt have. We have two more names to add to a list of African Americans killed by Police Officers in these encounters. Its unbearable, and it needs to become intolerable. The latest nbc wall street journal poll shows her with a 7point lead over trump, but a warning voters, who put back ram obama over the top twice, just arent as into this election. First up, donald Second Quarter time in recent weeks hes been reaching out to the African American community. Is he connecting, or do a lot of people think hes talking down to them . Like i said before, i think hes been very con descending in his conversation toward the African American community. But more so, i dont understand his one of the more schizophrenic campaigns ive ever seen. Schizophrenic is he kind of is all over the place. Im just talking as a Pure Campaign watch person. He hasnt had a consistent message. Hes more on script as hes been lately. It is a tumultuous time in our country. I dont fault him for trying to reach out to the African American community. I just dont think hes connecting, and i think hes all over the place. One minute hes saying this Police Shooting was a bad Police Shooting, but the next minute he talk definitely mixed messages. Its kind of a schizophrenic campaign. Im not sure how he is even resinating not just with the African American community, but with most people. I dont think he is all over the place at all. He is right to reach out to the black community, because he has to. Because nobody else has reached out to the black community. The democrats have not done any favors to the black community. With respect to the shootings and stop and frisk, i think its completely inappropriate for Hillary Clinton or donald trump or anybel condemn the shooting until an investigation is done done. With respect to African Americans, he does have to reach out to hem. I dont get this notion or suggestion that he has somehow disparaged black people. When has he expressed any kind of racism, said anything was disparaging to the African American people. He wants to help them in a way all right. Upcoming debate, which donald trump will show up . I think its going to be interesting, because ive always been told you see a wise man and a fool in the conversation. Nobody knows the difference. So im very interested to see if theyre going to talk about substantive issues, or if its going to be a race to the bottom on issues. Your thoughts about what clinton should do should she overwhelm him with policy statements and information to show how better informed she is . If thats smart, thats what shell try to do. If donald trump is smart, hell be better than hes ever been in any of the republican debates. Hes got to come with a lot more substance. Im certain somebody will have written a couple of sinkers and one liners hell insert to try and carry the momentum. If you turn that into an insult fest, it wont be good for any of us. Battle. Priebus talking about kasich and ted cruz, saying, those people need to get on board. I think were going to obligate the process. I dont think its going to be easy for them to run. Kasichs political advisor lashing back. the idea of a greater purpose is at the center of everything kasich does unable to stand for core all right. So governor kasichs actions last couple weeks, curious. Why did he go to the white house with president obama in favor of the Trance Pacific Partnership with everybody else is against . I think he did that the same reason that a lot of conservatives and myself didnt support his candidate day say for presidency that hes far more lib ran than he should be. Its going to lead to millions of dollars in job priebus, i should say this it is incredible the Republican NationalCommittee Chairman would actually threaten him by saying, you cant run in four years. Were going to change the process. How could they actually do that . How could they actually somehow preclude him from runing . I dont think they can. I think, quite frankly, i thought that was completely out of line for the Republican NationalCommittee Chairman to say that. I think hes going to alienate himself. Let me say this there may not be the Republican Party e after this election. This election has turned the Republican Party up on top of its head. So i think by kasich moving to the point hes trying to do, by being bipartisan with president obama on this issue, hes trying to look for a center of gravity with the Republican Party that quite frankly in a recent interview, said hes not voting for Hillary Clinton, and he likely wont vote for trump. What will people make of that . To me what priebus the trying to do is force unity. Clinton, even bernie sanders. Her last rival came on board. But you cant force unity by saying if you dont get on board now with the trump train, that you cant run later. It has to come naturally. If kasich doesnt want to do it, i dont think he should do it. That battle wont help donald trump in ohio, because kasich controls a lot of the get out the vote power. Still ahead, can there be a wedding between cleveland and East Cleveland . Cleveland Council Starts talking about possible marriage, annexation, call it what you will, still a ways off, but Cleveland Council this week starting to talk about the monumental task, some Council Members claiming cleveland doesnt want the burden of its down and out neighbor. But others saying it should be done if the state kicks in enough money to help rebuild East Cleveland freeways. Part of this. Nothing that we can do can put the citizens in the city of cleveland in a worst place. You cant let East Cleveland continue to wander out there in the wilderness, and cleveland has a responsibility to the entire region as a whole. I think, on both sides of the floor, itll be a good thing for both cities. But debating and numbers crunching, all that still has to take place, cleveland still waiting for East Clevelands new list of requests from their to decide if they want to plow ahead with this forced marriage, merger, again call it what you l. All right. So what is the mood at city hall about this . I mean, people are pretty cautious. I moon, they i think councilman reed say they recognize its a responsibility of the region, because East Cleveland is just teetering on the brink. Well, its becoming a pretty once you look up under the hood, after you bu under the hood, and you didnt realize all of the things you might assume. Theres millions of dollars worth of debt that he would have to assume. Theres millions of dollars worth of work with would have to do on freeway, not to mention the impact on Credit Services for the city of cleveland that might be a drain for us. So once you look at that, you have to, like the Council President said, which i think is appropriate, you cant put the present citizens of cleveland in jeopardy, at risk, trying to save our neighbor. The consensus seem to be that unless the state expenses, that the chances of this happening were slim and none. But what do you given the fact the state has been in a cutback mode of revenue to cities and school systems, what do you think of the chances republicans down there can be can be persuaded it would be a good thing to help out the struggling city . I cant speak for republicans in columbus, really anywhere around the state, but i do agree with blame. I think this is something the city of cleveland is trying to get its own economic house in order. Theyve got to make sure their they got to make sure their Police Officers theyre extremely short putting a tax on the ballot. Now theyre saying, were going to spend millions to lift up this city that cant carry its own weight. I doubt seriously the legislators in columbus will disagree with i think East Cleveland is coming to the Emergency Point where somethings got to be done. Right. And they just running out of revenue, and the problems getting too big. Pretty heavy. Still ahead, all fs, disappointing grades for cleveland schools, and that report cards challenge. Sfx door rattles. Glass shatters shell call nine one one. Average Response Time . Eleven minutes. Too late. She keeps a firearm in this safe for protection. But Hillary Clinton could take away her right to self defense. And with Supreme Court justices, hillary can. Dont let hillary leave you protected with nothing but a phone. Responsible for the content of this advertising. Theres only one way to go up. The district flagged every one of thirteen categories all fs. Even the yeartoyear progress getting a c in. Ceo eric gordon calling it disappointing, but not unexpected. Clevelands Graduation Rate, improving to more than 69 , its daily attendance up to 91 , 83 of third graders reading at expected levels by years end, and 8. 3 of High School Students taking college courses. Most districts report cards lost grades as became bs, bs became cs. But overall, cleveland, the fourth worst district in the state coming up, Russ Mitchell will talk with superintendent Eric Gore Don. All right. So again, Eric Gore Don has said all along there needs to be demonstrable progress for people to get behind this. How do you take results and convince people that progress has been made . We need to help people understand that the state when everybody begins to have lower grades, it says something about the state process that i think is very critical. Also we have things that we have seen that have been successful, some bright spots, Graduation Rate is up tremendously, 17 in the last 40 years. More people are enrolling in schools now, because those entering suburbs and other places people have flocked to are now starting to have lower grades. People are saying, why dont we put our children in highperforming schools, like jo international school. Cleveland does have some bright spots. I dont think that report card is the only thing we should be judged if you did not support the levy and forced them to abandon the transformation plan, cleveland schools over the years have gone through more rebuilding plans, more than the cleveland grounds. Absolutely. Were in a better place than we were four years ago. The trajectory is looking like were headed up, even though were still a lot of fie. We are in a better place. Do i sense a skeptical opinion coming here . No, not really. s a rock and a hard place. Youre asking people to fund something that isnt working, pay more for it; but yet if they dont pay more for it, its not only going to continue to not work, but get worse. A difficult thing for everybody. A lot of this is on the vision of the schools. A lot of it is on the Technology Available and so forth. Like a lot of large cities in the state of ohio, across the country, education must moms and dads have to be, in fact,ed in the process, making sure the kids are doing what needs to be done, not just in attendance, but getting their homework, getting things done. He is at the top of the food chain there. Hes been out spoken on it, and i will tell you hes been there a lot, but what weve learned is that parents as well as teachers carry a lot more weight than the head of our city. So that is whats carrying a lot more weight. I agree with that. Thank you, gentleman. Next up, that conversation Russ Mitchell will have with eric gordon. Hope to see you back next week for another look between the lines. Why let someone else have all the fun . The sometimes haphazard, never boring. Fun. The why cant it smell like this all the time. Fun. The learning the virtue of sharing. Fun. Ason. Warm up with pillsbury. The district and teachers reach a deal, avoiding then bad news the state of ohio report card gives the district all fs. At the same time, cleveland is asking voters to renew a tax levy this november. Were joined by Eric Gore Don, the ceo of the Proper School district. Eric, i know youre not feeling great. Thank you so much for coming in and doing this. Thank so much for having me. How are you feeling . I felt better, one, you know, power through this and get moving on. We appreciate you coming and years now. Have you ever seen a School Year Start quite like this one . Every year has its unique starts. This one has been particularly unique. In some ways it was our smoothest opening in the nine years ive been in the district. Everything happened the way it was supposed to. Buses were on time. Kids had schedules. We had the looming issue of solving the negotiations, which came to a head, but did get recovered. Weve had another new report card that was disappointing on many fronts, but had lot of good news. Its been an experience. I was going to ask that. You recently delivered your state of the schools address. You mentioned some good things. You talked about third grade reading levels being up. Then, a day or two later, this ohio state report card comes out, gives the district all fs, 16 of them. When people see that on television or read about it in the newspaper, theyre saying to themselves, oh my goodness, are things that bad over there. Whats the answer to that. No things arent that bad. Thats why we have to look at the whole report card. Yes, we have fs on the report so do most districts in ohio see significant decreeses. Part of that is because were raising the standards and expectations for kids. Pause we started behind, we have a longer way to go. On that same report card, our third grade reading scores beat canton, cincinnati, and three doe. We had a 17 gain on our graduation resident in just 5 years. Our attendance is up 1. 5 in a school year, and our true wan say rate dropped 6 and a half percent in a single year, and ou more kids are coming to the district. So those are all positive sides on that same document that while we havent yet met the state standards, it doesnt mean were not making progress. The testing was different this year. A lot of districts that did good last year did not do as well this year. the Cleveland Plain Dealer takes these results and does its own formula and gives the district a 0. 0gpa, the lowest in the state along with a psychological standpoint, from a morale standpoint, what does this do . Well i do think were in a point and not just in cleveland, but in all of our school districts, particularly those of us with struggling students, where you feel understood water all the time. And thats really hard to keep people focused on the improvements that are happening. Our students have a long way to go. They start from behind. They have a lot of need. And when you only look at the absolute performance of how they met the standards, me and many of my peer here locally and across feel underwater. Thats why we really have to unpack and see whats behind it, see how were trending. And we are trending polly in many ways. So thats where were staying focused. We were not trending polly for decades, and so if it took us 20 years to get into this problem, its not going to take us out Higher Standards in a short period of time. When you look at the last four years, what are you most proud of . The Graduation Rate. Years that ive been in charge in the district. It may be the fastest greg in the state. If not, its got to be really close. The state average has been about 2 . And also that those kids are more collegeready. The Higher Education compact data shows us that cuds who had gone on to college are 10 less likely to need remediation at all. And if they do need remediation, are 15 more likely to pass. So more kids are graduating, and theyre more ready when they do. Nobody will disagree with the statement that eric jordan has a hard job to do. When you look back at these five years, anything you would have done differently . Oh lot of things i would have done differently. I think the way that when we rolled out the cleveland plan, the way we have evaluation and differentiated competition, i think we would have phased it in more deliberately. I think that really caused a challenge inside the district where people who processes felt unfairly judged. I think thats within of the things weve tackled in the new negotiations, where we have tried to attack not only was it working, but now it feels more fair to our educators in the district. You were asking voters in november to tax levy. What do you say to those people who say, you did a great job, but i gave you four years. Why should i give you four more. The reason we asked for exactly only their choice today. The community can continue to hold us accountable, to see if the progress we made on reading scores, kindergarten readiness, on Graduation Rates, enrollment increases, if those things can continue for another four years. I think we have a responsibility not to go back to the old days of saying, just make it permanent and let me do my thing, but give me improvement, give us another period of time. Do you think people who live in the suburbs who dont have the chance to vote in this levy really understand how important this is . I think some people do, and other people do not. I think you should expect that actually. I interact with a lot of people outside of the city of cleveland and the district footprint who talk about their expectations of the district and how important we are to the region. And i work very closely with m colleagues, and i know they understand that some of the conditions theyre now dealing with are chance we learned how to address, and we can part of the solution. I have a couple of quick things. For people who dont live in the city of cleveland, but still want toyou do your job, whack they do . The single biggest thing is help us tell the whole story. Follow our stories on our web site. Join our social media push them to friends and closings. Dont let one sound byte tell the whole story. Follow the progress were making, the stories, great doing every day, and help others know that story. A minute left, loaded question for you, whats the toughest part of your job these days . I think the toughest part is making culture change. You know, cleveland has had 14 superintendents or ceos in 35 years, and every one of them had a plan, and i think helping people say that, this is the new way of doing business, and were going to stay the course and keep at it so that we get results instead of pitch being plan out and starting another one, pitch being superintendent out and getting another about the culture of the organization. Lets talk about Eric Gore Don personally for a sec. What keeps you going . The kids. Anytime i have a bad day, just get to a school and spend some time with my kids, and everythings fine. And youre optimistic . I am very optimistic. Our futures bright. Eric gore don, let me shake your hand. Best of luck to you. Thanks for coming in. My pleasure. Thank you.
