High school shatter by gunfire. How people came going gratitude for a situation that could heave been much worse. Good evening, we ten to think that Something Like this cant happen here and that all changed today. A teenager opened fire inside the Madison Junior Senior High School cafeteria. The teenager was 14yearold james Austin Hancock. Tonight deputies are hunting for answers as we are as well, trying to under while a young man would do Something Like this. When that call came in, the eighth graders were eating lunch. Its not clear whether hancocks victims were targeted. Either way there was chaos in the school. There was screaming and i looked over and ran in and the library was kind of quiet. You cant hear anything from outside. So were just trying to hide, and she wrapped her keys and put it in the door, and we went in. And thats it. It was just chaos. I heard three loud sounds. Like, banging or something. And i said it was gunfire, and she didnt tell me anything, so i didnt think it was gunfire. We didnt know what to think. We were just all like, whats going on . The teacher locked up in the classroom and people running everywhere, and we were like, our teacher just be safe. Didnt know what was going on, made us get in the back room. Hancock is facing a laundry list of charges, including two counts of attempt murder. Deputies say theyre trying to figure out where he got the gun he used, and how he got it into the school. A total of four people were wounded, Cameron Smith and Cooper Caffery were the ones shot. One of them in the thigh and the back, the other in the arm. Brad murray and katherine doucett were injured, hit by theyre all expected to make a complete recover. Parents were scared. But we start with Angela Ingram from heroes from todays incident. Reporter the Butler County sheriffs is tell can us that federal state, local, and Law Enforcement agencies all pulled together to come to this school, rushing to that school to make sure that the children were okay and get the wounded out of the school, also to make sure they took care of that active shooter situation. He says they have been doing active Shooter Training for years, but you still never expect it to happen where you live. Imagine being in a cafeteria, when youre growing up and you were in school, and youre eating lunch, and then all of a sudden theres an active shooter. Reporter the nightmare that usually happen to someone else, somewhere else, hit home this morning. Terrified parents lined up to get their kids from Madison Junior Senior High School, praying their children were okay. The weapon came from. But it does appear that he had this weapon for the first part of the morning in the school. Reporter investigators say an eighth Grade Student pulled the trigger, james Austin Hancock, allegedly shot two of his classmates, two more were hurt by shrapnel or running from the shooting. The sheriff says hancock was caught within ten or 15 minutes. The first thing you want to do is contain your suspect. So we did that. And then from there we branched out to search for him and dog was able to track him and take him into custody. The shooting was over and the shooter had left the school so we were we had an opportunity to attend to those that were shot. In an active shooter still in the school, you actually got to go in and you got do work on stopping the active shooter. Reporter at this point the sheriff has not released a opened fire on his classmates, and and he says they have a pretty good idea whose firearm this was but at this point theyre not releasing that. There were several vigils held, including one at middletown high school. Hundreds of people were there, heads bowed, hands held, leaning on their faith to get them through, and some had no connection to the school. They were just there to comfort anyone who needed it. This just is something that touched me because ive lost a child. Ive lost a child who was 30 years old but still im just so thankful today that none of these parents had to face that. Cant do this on your own. Its hard. Its hard to go through something this scary. A day like any other day, and just left the cav tiera. Been on lunch supervision and heard the gunshots, and then immediately some kids ran into our ran into the gym, said theres a kid with a gun, and we immediately grabbed our class and took them to safety, and our training kicked in that our administrators prepared us for. The students here have practiced many times what thigh should do if theres ever a shooting. Today they followed that training much to the relief of their parents. A sea of concerned parents made their way to Madison Junior Senior High School to pick up children after shots were fired in the cafeteria. Trembling, crying, praying, praying. Paulleta will sons grandson heard the gunshot. I was in library and we had too go into a different room so were safe and everybody was freaking out. I was sitting on my phone and then i heard sounds like somebody dropped a lot of binders. The entire school went on lockdown. People started walking back to the back closet, and then we heard the announcements come on, full lockdown so we just sat in the closet for however long. Just sit there and listening the Library Teacher was reading. Did you lock the door . Yeah, we locked all the doors. The students finally received the allclear. Parents breathed a sigh of relief once they were able to hug their children. We pray over the kids, over the teachers, over the staff, the students, and i just thank god that nothing worse than thank god for that. Reporter the students with whom we spoke said they were very surprised to hear that Austin Hancock was the person charged in this shooting theyve said that he was a wrestler, actually friends with one of the kids that was shot in the cafeteria, and to their knowledge, he had not been in trouble. No school at madison tomorrow, meaning students will have a lot of time to collect their thoughts and you can imagine hour hard its going to be for them to move on but a child psychologist that we talked to today said that is exactly what has to happen. The biggest thing i found is just telling them that it is possible to cope with your feelings and change your feelings and change your thoughts. I think kid often think that the emotions control them, so often times just you tell them, you can control those. I do it every day, and try to give examples from your own life, and then help them feel something i can work on. She says getting back to a routine is key. She also says reminding children that there are adults in school to keep them safe can be very beneficial, doing things as a anxiety. School is cancel el tomorrow but teachers and staff will report to school to start planning and preparing for students to return to class. It was during that soft lockdown that School Officials were tipped off about a student there with a gun. They found the gun inside a male students backpack. They didnt say if it was loaded but the student was arrested and we expect to learn more tomorrow about what kind of charges he is facing. Made quick work of a threat this morning. A group of in deer a Madeira School students told officials about a threat on social media. Nothing actually happened and school went on as normal. No word on discipline for the student.
