One of the key pieces of evidence the prosecutors had in todays grand jury presentation was this Surveillance Video taken at the uptown Place Apartments. It shows 27yearold resident Sasha Samsudean walking with the Security Guard stephen duxbury. This was the last time she was seen alive. Two days later, her body was found inside her apartment. Shed been strangled, wrapped in a comforter and doused with bleach. Today, the state attorney jeff ashton and his Team Presented this evidence and more to grand jurors. News 6 was there as they announced their indictment of firstdegree murder, attempted sexual battery, and burglary. The state has to bring this before the grand jury and get an indictment. Today was a first good run for prosecutors. It was a good chance for them to see how the evidence was perceived by jurors. Prosecutors and the family of Sasha Samsudean. Its the first step of many in that process. That closure can take a long time, even beyond when the case is closed for a family. So the reality is theyve got a long road ahead of them. And an important side note, the uptown Place Apartments where the murder happened is just three blocks to the north of us. As for duxbury, his next court date is his arraignment. Also breaking from the Orange County courthouse, another indictment in a highprofile case. David payne was indicted on charges of firstdegree murder and kidnapping. Investigators say he kidnapped his exgirlfriend, jasmine samuel, back in december. She called 911 from the trunk of had her car, telling police that payne kidnapped her. Deputies found her dead inside the trunk a couple of hours after that call. Weve learned the body found in an orlando pond belonged to a missing man. The Orange CountySheriffs Office tells us robert piersons body was found in the lake on friday. The 22yearold was last seen alive on january 22nd. Sky 6 flew over the area on friday when detectives pulled his body from the water. Deputies say they will continue to investigate the death, but they do not suspect foul play at this point. Tonight, some parents in orlando are relieved to find out that two students were not attacked by a homeless man like they first claimed. In fact, police say it was actually the other way around. News 6s erik von ancken is live at stone wall Jackson Middle School off south cimarron where all this happened this morning. You spoke to some people in the area who say theyre not shocked by this. Not at all. Mostly parents of students here, they tell me they werent surprised when they first were told this morning that a homeless man had attacked two kids on their way to school here that it was the other way around, they say actually encounters between the two groups happen quite often around here. People will call and see whats going on, if they see a fire truck. Shes lived in the neighborhood off south cimarron since 1964. So i guess im the eyes of the neighborhood. She watches the students, scurrying to school, stone wall jackson middle, every day. Youve got your junior high and ill tell you theres like 15 to 20. And its not just of the kids that breeze by her block. She says its also the homeless. Theyre walking up and down. Theyre up in the woods up here. Theres a gate. So it didnt surprise her when two middle schoolers first reported that a homeless man on this sidewalk tried to steal their cell phone and bit them when they fought back. The thing is, police eventually learned it didnt happen that way. They say the students harassed i try to stay away from problems. He agrees many homeless camp up and down the street of south cimarron and some are aggressive, but kids are, too, like it was today, according to police. The answer is more eyes in this neighborhood, not just hers she says. Should something change . Well, weve not seen many of our police that go around like we used to. Patrols . Patrols. And police dont know how badly this man is hurt, if at all. All they know is that the kids battered this guy, they say, but they dont know where he is tonight. Were learning new details about the Brevard County teacher who was shot and killed by her estranged husband. News 6 learned sandra cook filed divorce papers saying she was afraid of her husband. According to the documents, the couple separated in november and then sandra cook told police ricky cook showed up to their house on january 4th with a she asked for a restraining order but the Police Department says one was never obtained. Police say their bodies were found inside their home on chaparral drive on monday. They say it appears ricky broke into the house, shot and killed her before then killing himself. The couple did not have any kids together, but sandra is a mom of three from a previous marriage. Tonight were hearing the 911 call made moments after someone shot and killed a 15yearold. Someone standing in the road started shooting at him while he was riding in a car. That car crashed into a tree. It happened friday on central street, not far from the boys and girls club near altamonte springs. People in the neighborhood the shots. How many shots did you hear . About eight or nine. Oh, jesus. Ground. So theres somebody ground. Yes, there is a kid bleeding out on the ground. So far, whoever did it remains on the run. Anyone with info should call the crime line at 1800423tips. The Orange CountySheriffs Office is helping to get unwanted guns off the streets. Its holding a gun buyback event. Next friday, february 12th, you can turn in any gun and get a 50 gift card. The Sheriffs Office says they will not ask any questions about the gun and no i. D. Is required. The event is from 7 00 in the morning to 7 00 at night. The dropoff location is at the Orange BlossomTrail Development board. Deputies ask all guns to be unloaded and stored in a plastic bag. The virus continues to spread. For weeks, dozens of people camped outside the Volusia CountyAdministration Center. News 6 learned undercover officers with Daytona Beach police spent three days and two nights at that camp. They tell us it was pure chaos and extremely violent. News 6s loren korn spoke with the chief about what they found. Safe zone for the homeless is now being called an area for nefarious activity, everything from prostitution, down to Illegal Drugs and group beatings. Dozens of homeless say the Volusia CountyAdministration Center was their safe haven, but Daytona Beach police say otherwise. You heard about prostitution, drug dealings, beatdowns, shakedowns, people who were not homeless. The police chief says he sent undercover officers there to find out what was really going on inside the homeless camp. You look at some of those people and theyre certified gang members, 20 arrests, young people pulling up in the car, prostitute ing the guys girlfriend. Some in the camp had extensive records, showing us previous mugshots. Some people are actually homeless, collecting money through handouts and disability checks, others were using that to their advantage. If you dont pay me, im one group beat up a 62yearold man so badly, undercover officers called in for backup but said it didnt do any good. The camp goons Wander Around and say the cops are coming, dont anybody talk. Hide your beer, hide your drugs and dont anybody cooperate. Several of the homeless were grateful when they arrived to dismantle the camp and hes hopeful they get the service they need. Six cases have been found in florida and those have been transmitted overseas. We could start seeing locally transmitted cases by this summer. The zika virus is a warmweather infection. When it gets hot outside, its the zika virus is transmitted by mosquitos and often leaves people with fever, joint aches, a rash and red eyes. It also causes birth defects. Pregnant women are being warned not to travel to south and central america. The World Health Organization yesterday declared the zika virus as a Global Public health emergency. There could be up to 4 million cases of zika virus in the americas next year. And cell phone video shows a daycare director attacking a 4yearold.
