He talked to one of the men who brought his situation safely to a close. Within the last few hours, weve learned the suspect is an army veteran who suffers from ptsd. That condition, according to officials, likely playing a role in his actions here early this morning. Bullets damaged several units of the Coral Gardens condominiums after an hourslong standoff between melbourne suspect identified as Michael Thomas taylor. This is what it sounded like earlier this morning as taylor and officers exchanged rounds and rounds of gunfire. That prompted police to evacuate neighbors like john to a nearby bowling alley. She was very worried about ricochet of bullets. We have apartments on either side of you. So the exchanged rate of that. Melbourne police say the standoff started around 11 00 wednesday night after what theyre calling a domestic disturbance. For nearly 12 hours, they negotiated with taylor, a veteran, but couldnt get him to come out. That is, until george taylor, a Homeless Veterans advocate who knows the suspect stepped in. From one combat veteran to another combat veteran, theres a rapport there. I knew if i had an opportunity or prayed that i had the opportunity that we could resolve it peacefully. It appears taylor was posting dire standoff. In fact, you can see he even from the bullets. Were looking into that. Thats a possibility of social media being used to communicate the situation that was going on and maybe even try to solicit information from others. Now, despite this gunbattle, know one was seriously hurt in the standoff situation. Taylor is in the process of being booked into the Brevard County jail. The state Attorneys Office announced it will not be pursuing criminal charges they say it was negligent but not criminal. News 6 reporter Eric Sandoval is getting answers from the victims family tonight about whats next. The crash that killed the father and his son happened right behind me on state road 434 last october. The family tells me theyre heart broken over todays decision not to charge the driver and are now considering a wrongful death lawsuit to get more answers. I cannot believe this. Its been three months since she lost her brother and her 1yearold nephew. She says the holidays were especially tough to get through. I had already gone into some of their christmas presents. What do you do with that . Today another blow. The state attorney decided not to charge the driver who caused this multicar crash that killed the man and his son. They say the evidence was not Cynthia Guthrie with any crime, just negligence. They say guthrie could be cited with a traffic violation. She says that is frustrating. Its not about going to jail or not. I feel somehow a little bit of compassion for this person. Shes 75. She was a retired school teacher. I feel somehow a little bit of compassion. But when i was told nothing was going to happen, just a traffic fine, that blows my mind. We could not track down guthrie for a comment today. The woman says she would like to hear from her, at the very least she would like to ask her if she apologizes for anything that happened. Thank you. Tonight family and classmates are mourning the tragic death of a 16yearold soccer player. She collapsed in the middle of the game last night and died a short time later. Deputies say the 16yearold girl had just raised her hand to get out of the game and used her today students at Taylor Middle High School in pierson released white balloons in her memory. The school also sent out this call to alert parents. She was a tenth Grade Student here and greatly missed by her taylor wild cat friends and staff. Grief counselors are on hand for the students and staff. In Orange County, news 6 is Digging Deeper into trash troubles. We have reports from all over of garbage being picked up days late. 25,000 people have called the county to complain. I think what was most frustrating is we werent getting any answers. Trash in her neighborhood was finally picked up four days late. On january 1st, Orange County switched to automated trash and recycling pickup. We first told you yesterday about glitches in that system in part because not everyone is putting the new cans on the street properly. The countys waste manager says crews are working overtime to catch up. People got picked up on time on the right day and are moving forward and 10 didnt. He says crews will even be working on saturday, their normal day off, if necessary. Orange county leaders say they hope to have all the glitches worked out in the next month or so. Ormand beach Police Arrested him last night for beating and stabbing a husband and wife december 27th to steal their car keys. Phillips lived just a few doors down. When Police Released a composite sketch, calls came flooding in, including from phillips own father. When the detectives showed the woman the photos, they burst into tears. Phillips is charged with attempted murder. Well, he is charged with murdering a woman at a downtown orlando nightclub, though he never fired a single shot. Tonight we know when cody roach will go on trial. At a hearing today, a judge set jury selection for march 28th. Surveillance video captured the confrontation. Police say roach got into a fight with police after being thrown out of the vixen nightclub. When they say roach reached for his gun, an officer opened fire nine times. Seven hit roach, but one went through the bars door, killing a 22yearold woman. Roach could face life in prison if convicted. A Volusia County judge must decide if statements luis toledo made to a Lake Mary Police can be used in his upcoming murder trial. Haleigh disappeared from her home in satsuma on february 10th, 2009. This year, she would be 12 years old. In hopes haleigh is alive, the National Center for missing and exploited children came up with what she might look like today. The center and the Putnam CountySheriffs Office sent it out nationwide. At the time she vanished, a 17yearold was supposed to be babysitting the 5yearold. They later got married and sentenced to prison on drug charges. Despite chasing down thousands of leads as far as wyoming, investigators say they still have no real clue what happened to haleigh. Today the grandmother told reporters the family has never given up. We always have hope until they bring us a body or some definite proof, undisputable proof that shes deceased, shell always be alive in our hearts and in our minds.
