Within the last hour, police chief Mike Chitwood responded for the very first time about his plan on handling the growing problem. Its a story news 6 has been falling for days after dozens camped outside the appraisers office. Justin warmoth is joining us with the breaking details. What does chief chitwood say . The city is working with coming up with 100 beds and a temporary shelter. Once the beds are ready and a location is determined for the shelter, he says they can start moving these folks who have started to camp out outside the Volusia County administration center. You can see just how many there are, too. The number continues to grow. It appears they could be on their way out. This problem all week. It started as just a few homeless outside the building but the number has continue to grow over the last week or so. Its gotten to the point now where county employees have refused to come to work, but there really isnt anything they can do. Officials cant move them because it would be a violation of their rights because there isnt a shelter in place for them to go. But according to chief chitwood, thats all about to change. The objective is to solve this problem. City managers been working very hard to solve it and we talked to mike and we think if it we can coming up with 100 beds, we think we can resolve this situation. The city manager has been working diligently to try to get that accomplished. Its unclear where the temporary shelter will be going. Florida department of Law Enforcement says theyre traveling in a 2010 white fourdoor chevy cobalt. The search for the three started on friday when deputies say bullock cut off his g. P. S. Told Orlando Police chief john mina and mayor buddy dyer presented the departments end of year review. They say crime is down but theres still a lot of work that needs to be done. News 6 reporter mark lehman tells us what theyre focusing on this year. The Orlando PoliceDepartment Reports crime down slightly last year but certain Violent Crimes were up. Taking a close look at that today, the chief also says his focus is on their response to resistance. Lets talk about Violent Crimes, homicides are way up this year. Robberies were down in 2015, there was a big jump in homicides and sex crimes. The number of murders in the city nearly doubling last year, but thats due to a nearrecord low in 2014. If you look at beyond just an year, the Orlando Police department and the city of orlando are doing a good job of reducing crime. The chief highlighted the in july officer William Anderson fired on a vehicle after he was run over in a traffic stop. Mina focused on the importance of video when it comes to claims of Excessive Force. This year, four o. P. D. Officers were fired for excessively using forces in cases from 2014. Instances where mina says it proves the benefit of body cams. Having the body cameras will give us a clear picture of what exactly happened during the use of force. Last year, nine Excessive Force complaints were raised in the department. To further combat that, o. P. D. Plans to eventually outfit 450 officers with bodyworn cameras. The chief says a fiveyear response to resistance studies should be completed in the coming months. He also says 100 bodyworn cameras should be in place by spring of this year. Lehman, news 6. In Volusia County, a large trailer went up in flames, leaving nothing but the outer shell of the structure behind. Trailer when it was fully engulfed in flames. It happened in emporia road in Deleon Springs around 8 00 this morning. Firefighters saw flames and smoke shooting out the windows of the trailer. As you can see, the fire ate through the trailer, leaving not much behind. Theres no word yet on who the trailer belonged to or how the fire started. Well let you know when volusia fire officials give us more details. This afternoon, a man is recovering in the hospital after being shot in a confrontation with two would be burglars. Deputies say he started chasing them in the middle of a neighborhood. The wild scene played out late last night on park commons drive off moss park road in orange county. The two suspects are still on the run right now. Deputies say at least one of them is armed. Deputies say it all started when the victim spotted two men trying to break into his car around 11 30 last night. The men took off after a confrontation with the victim deputies have not released a description of the two men. The victims injuries are nonlifethreatening. Starting this week, tolls will no longer be collecting at the plaza exit. The thousands of drivers who use this road will, of course, still need to pay to use it. Thats right. There are about five other places crews will be collecting the tolls in the meantime. Starting sunday, the Central FloridaExpressway Authority will stop collecting tolls at the beachline airport plaza. Tolls will be collected by the florida turnpike at its beachline west main plaza or by Expressway Authority at four new ramp plazas. Crews say this is all being done to give people a more convenient, safe and efficient drive. More than 75,000 drivers travel through the beachline airport plaza, making it the second busiest plaza on Central Florida expressways 109mile stretch. The work on the project started in november of last year and scheduled to wrap up in the more than a decade after Hurricane Katrina wiped out much of the Passenger Rail along the gulf coast, theres a new push to bring back the round trip service between new orleans and orlando. Right now, amtrak and the Southern Rail Commission are conducting tours to see how much damage there is and if the service is even possible.
