ellen degeneres quits. cara is fired. replacing them, jennifer lopez and steven tyler. we'll judge the impact of all these change "early" friday, july 30, 2010. it is a gorgeous friday morning here in the big town. morning, everybody, i'm harry smith. >> and i'm erica hill. yes, perfect way to kick off the end of the week. a lot happening this morning, a lot happening tomorrow. chelsea clinton, of course, getting married. we'll get you the very latest. live shot from rhinebeck, at the hotel where we're told several wedding guests are staying. >> and we have a lot of news coming out of california. >> break news this morning as we start in los angeles where fast-moving wildfires overfight have threatened 2,000 homes. all of this is is north of l.a., in palmdale, california. that's where we find hattie kauffman this morning. >> reporter: good morning. i'm at the front lines in terms of protecting homes from these fires. you can see the fire truck behind me, the houses and right behind that is the edge of the fire within a quarter of a mile. all it takes is this gusty wind to turn it into an inferno. three fires burning north of los angeles, this one is the most dangerous. this huge fire 60 miles north of los angeles broke out about 3:00 p.m. thursday. by evening, locals were lining up to watch it grow. >> we were out here for like 30 minutes. it wrapped around in less than that. >> reporter: high winds and dry brush made for a fast-moving blaze that's already consumed nearly 6,000 acres, more than seven square miles. at least 2,000 homes are threatened. palmdale residents scrambled when fire officials issued evacuation orders. >> we packed up our valuables. we have our grandchildren with us. >> reporter: several electrical transmission towers like this one were caught in the fire, but so far that hasn't caused any power outages. 500 firefighters are on the scene. while there are no reports of injuries or deaths, officials say there has been no containment. this fire is just west of where last year's station fire burned. that was the largest fire in l.a. county history. they don't want a repeat of that. so, at first light, authorities plan an aggressive air assault. >> hattie, thanks. >> thanks new now to the ethics charges against new york congressman charles rangel. he says he gained fonothing. now that details are out, rangel is not the only one with something to lose. sharyl attkisson with more. >> reporter: rangel's trial was expected to tart in september, a skeptical a lot of his colleagues were hoping to avoid. once among one of the most powerful democrats in congress, rangel now stands charged with 13 counts of ethics violations. they include failing to disclose income, checking account, stock and property, improper using rent subsidized apartments and improperly fund-raising for the rangel center. rangel center was the subject of a cbs news investigation in 2007. rangel described it as a presidential-like facility with office and well-appointed furnishings for him once he left congress. he's charged with using public resources and congressional letterhead to ask for big donations for the center. he solicited companies. goldman sachs, whachovia and more. he asked for $30 million from verizon and new york life. $10 million from aig. rangel denies any wrongdoing. before the charges were read, he told reporters it may be his toughest time since he fought in the korean war. >> i wrote a book that having survived that, that i hadn't had a bad day since. today i have to reassess that statement. >> reporter: 20 people are been expelled from congress. only six since the civil war era. there have been 40 reprimands all together. half of those from the time of the civil war. the most recent reprimand was joe wilson who yelled "you lie" at president obama. >> sharyl attkisson in washington this morning. thanks. this morning president obama's critics have more ammunition as he tries to focus on cars and the economy. senior white house correspondent bill plante joins us with more on that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the president is headed to detroit today to talk up recovery in the auto industry and also to try to get control of his own message. for the last couple of weeks, the white house has spent a whole lot of time responding to its own mistakes. like the firing of agriculture department official shirley sherrod. >> i knew it was racism when it happened to me. no one had to tell me that. >> reporter: sherrod said in a speech thursday that she has decided to sue blogger andrew breitbart who posted a video clip of a speech she made to naacp members which appeared to show her showing a racist attitude toward a white farmer. she's been fully vindicated but has yet to accept a new job from the agriculture department. she invited the president to join her to learn more about racism. president obama admitted that his administration overreacted. >> many are to blame for the reaction and overreaction that followed these comments, including my own administration. >> reporter: today in michigan the president will try to change the subject, saluting what the administration says is the comeback of the u.s. auto industry. white house report released thursday says that without the bail outof gm and chrysler, the industry would are lost almost 1.1 million jobs. instead, it notes that gm, chrysler and ford are increasing production. and the automakers have ooded 55,000 jobs this year. economists point out that may be not enough to save the industry, which has lost more than 5 million jobs. the president, however, today will look on the bright side. he's going to say that he expects to get back to the entire $60 billion of taxpayer money that his administration has put in to bail out the auto companies. erica? >> cbs's bill plante at the white house. thank you. joining us now from the white house is the president's press secretary, robert gibbs. mr. gibbs, good morning. >> good morning, harry. >> before we get to detroit and yobz, i want to can you very quickly about charles rangel, this bipartisan committee, bringing charges against rangel. they cite a pattern of indifference and disregard for the law. if this trial happens, it will happen in september, right in the midst of the congressional elections. should charles rangel quit? >> well, look, harry, i think as you mentioned there's a bipartisan committee looking into some very serious charges. we think that's certainly the right thing to do. i don't want to prey the outcome of that. i think democrats going into this midterm election have an agenda to offer the american people about moving our country forward. that's what we'll spend our time talking about this fall. >> today you go to detroit and you'll visit a gm plant, you'll visit a chrysler plant. people will be stunned to know that both of those companies are turning a profit. they're hiring new workers. does it surprise even you? >> look, i think there's no doubt that the team that worked on auto restructuring here at the white house is surprised at where gm and chrysler are. as you mentioned, the big three all reported a profit for the first time since 2004. and these companies are hiring again. the auto industry's hiring again for the first time since 1999. there's to doubt it is a success story. we've got a ways to go. but there's no doubt that the investments that had to be made in the auto industry, the sacrifices and the restructuring that have been made, have put the auto industry on a much better path toward sustainability and one that's creating jobs again. >> there are those that would still argue that the bailout never should have happened, the companies should have imploded, declared bankruptcy, gone the way of whatever the marketplace it be restructured as. >> harry, it's a simple thing to say, but the question is, how do you then deal with the million people that would have been unemployed? how do you deal with the communities, many of which are been built around these auto manufacturing plants that wouldn't have other businesses coming in to replace those jobs in this president said it was just too risky to walk away from a million jobs, most of them in the midwest. and, instead, let's provide an investment to them, but then let's ask them to do some tough things. let's ask them to restructure, make sacrifices. i think the fruits of that are being born out. you see companies that are profitable, companies adding jobs. and an environment in which there is strong consumer demand for the products they're making. >> let us jump very quickly, if you don't mind, july is ending as the most deadly month in afghanistan since the war began for u.s. troops we're talking about. there's a new report about suicides that the army has just received. the commanding general who has been overseeing this has basically said he's wondering out loud if we're just sending our troops to these places, like iraq and afghanistan, too many times and it's resulting in some parts in this suicide. are we asking too much of these soldiers? >> if you look the a place like afghanistan, we've been there for almost ten years. obviously, our hearts go out to those that have been lost this month and over the past ten years in both iraq and afghanistan, defending our freedom. i think we are to do a better job. the president believes a better job in making decisions about where and when we send those troops, but most of all, taking care of them when they come home, giving them the services they've earned and deserved to make sure that they come back and they have the support that we all believe they should have. >> robert gibbs, we thank you for your time this morning. appreciate it. >> harry, thank you. and coming up monday morning, we'll are an exclusive interview with president obama. we'll talk about the economy, immigration reform, the democratic party's chances in the midterm elections and whatever else we can squeeze in. that will be monday, right here on the early hoe. >> chelsea's wedding? should we can
