we'll begin with a report about a security breach involving one of america's most important high-tech weapons. the "wall street journal" says militants in iraq are hacking into predator unmanned aircraft. cbs news correspondent elizabeth palmer is in london with the latest. >> reporter: as you say, the "wall street journal" is reporting based on a pentagon briefing that some iraqi insurgents were able to down load and then watch surveillance video from the very drones those unmanned aerial surveillance systems, those drones that were supposed to be keeping an eye on them. in iraq and now in afghanistan, video surveillance by drones has been essential for spotting insurgent fighters and pinpointing targets for missile strikes. the trouble is some drones transmit unencrepted video which means the enemy has been able to seat pictures, too. over the past year, the u.s. military has found drone feeds stored on laptop computers belonging to shiite militants in iraq which they collected using simple computer software. one brand, sky grabber, is available online from a russian distribute it tore for $25.95. it picks up the signal sent by the drones first to a ground station, then up on to a commercial satellite, before being finally down linked by the u.s. control center and it's this last link that's vulnerable. it is working on encrypting all drone signals now. the military family sizes none of their missions have been compromised pie the security breach. it's of obvious concern now in afghanistan and pakistan and cbs news was able to get information from pakistani security officials this morning who say that as far as they know, they haven't seen any evidence of it yet there and they cite the deadly accuracy of the might ss strikes as proof that the surveillance system from the drones is working. >> elizabeth palmer in london. thank you very much. back in this country, senate democratic leaders are working to push a watered down version of health care reform through congress. cbs news congressional correspondent nancy cordes is at capitol hill. >> reporter: they are tantalizingly close now. there is now just one republican or democrat, rather, holdout. that's nebraska senator ben nelson. democratic leaders are frantically negotiating with nelson who would provide their crucial 60th vote. nelson wants the bill to include a ban on abortion coverage for any woman who get as tax credit to buy insurance. >> this is a big issue, it's a complex issue. since it's all democratic support, there is essentially no room for losing any votes. >> reporter: leaders are trying to craft a compromise that everyone can live with and soon. because senate rules dictate that if they want to pass a bill by the holidays, they must file the bill by this saturday. and even then, they could get thwarted by republican stall tactics. >> the provisions of the federal advisory committee act shall not apply to the council. >> reporter: yesterday republicans suddenly demand that had clerks read a 767 page health care aermd out loud on the floor. >> for purposes of subsection, a service shall be -- >> reporter: senate business got tied up for three hours until senator bernie sanders just pulled his amendment. democrats were predictably outraged. >> i have in my hand a smoking tweet. from senator joe dement. if reid won't slow down this debate, we'll do it for him. >> reporter: and that's the kinds of stunt that republicans would happily pull again if it will slow down the democrats' goal of getting this bill passed. how before any of their from brazil. a federal appeals court in that country has now ruled the boy should be returned to his dad, but that doesn't mean the legal battle is over. >> there is only one resolution and that's for sean to come home. >> reporter: david goldman may finally be bringing his son, sean, home, but he won't believe it until it happens. >> been down this road before. this is a very positive development and thank god that these judges ordered him to come home again. >> reporter: wednesday's ruling giving gold than custody of his son is the latest in a series of back and forth court decisions. goldman's struggle over sean started five years ago when his wife took the boy to brazil presumably for vacation, but they never came back. bruna divorced david, remarried and then died last year giving birth to a daughter. since then, sean has grown up in a spraling apartment raised by his wealthy stepfather and made stern natural grand other. sean's brazilian family is now appealing to the country's supreme court, their final hope of keeping sean. they want the court to hear from the boy himself. >> he said that he wants to stay in brazil. he doesn't want to be apart from his sister. >> morning. patrick, let me ask you this. if you were david goldman, what are you going through right now? >> oh, it's a mixed bag for david right now. about i thi i think david has been through 20 appeals and 20 different motions filed by his opposition down there in brazil. and it's never happened before. and, you know, he's gone through all of those and his child, sean, has not been brought back to the united states. so he's probably a bit skeptical and excited at the same time. it's an emotional roller coaster, i'm sure. >> and he has rain to be skeptical, doesn't he. >> absolutely. like i said, i think he's been through 20 motions and appeals by high school opposition in brazil and it seems like they're just going continue. i wouldn't be surprised if the stepfather does file some other appeal and block sean's return. >> you have spent a lot of time lobbying in congress and lob be biing in state legislatures to get support for children such as your own or children such as david goldman's because there is an international law which is supposed to help prevent this sort of taking of children and having family members, other family members, literally snatch them away. are you seeing any change, are you seeing any greater support for this? >> absolutely. there's a lot who are interest in the issue over the last year and a half or so. i have an organized group of parents who work with me. we all work with our legislator, with our senator, with our congressmen. we have met with the state department. and things are changing, you know. it's -- this is sort of a side
