>> in wishing well. >> wishing well. so are you going to make a wish? >> reporter: club hopping by night. >> give me a kiss. >> reporter: when fiore's body was found strangled and tossed naked into a dumpster jenkins fled. what emerged was a history of domestic violence including an assault against fiore. an international manhunt intensified the focus on jenkins. >> the ring was tightening on him. he obviously was desperate. >> reporter: they nearly caught him wednesday in a high speed boat chase, but jenkins escaped, zig zagging back and forth from u.s. to canadian waters before authorities lost him in point roberts, washington. he crossed the border into canada on foot his location a mystery until now. investigators say there are no other suspects in the murder of jazzsmine fiore. meanwhile, maggie this whole case has really put a light on how reality shows check into the background of their contestants. maggie? >> thank you, hattie kauffman. we will explore that further ahead this morning with a criminal profiler and also hear from people who knew him well. chris? >> maggie, thank you. over 500 people in the u.s. have already died from the h1n1 flu. and with kids about to head back to school federal health officials aren't taking any chances. they're holding a meeting at cdc headquarters in lan it. our own dr. jennifer ashton is there now, and she joins us. doctor, good morning. >> good morning, chris. the cdc is holding a two-day conference here in atlanta on the h1n1 virus, and surely at the top of the list of topics to be discussed will be the vaccine. an update on the vaccine and how it will be distributed. but as federal government starts planning its own guidelines state and local government are making its own plans about how they'll deal with the h1n1 virus come the fall. at boston medical center ems workers are now training to administer h1n1 vaccinations. >> this is going to feel a little uncomfortable but this is just a little squirt. >> reporter: while state and local government await federal guidance on distributing an h1n1 vaccine, government officials are preparing for a serious outbreak. >> this country is really gearing up for a major vaccine campaign this fall. i think, if we're trying to vaccinate everybody, there are going to be logistical difficulties. >> reporter: according to the cdc, 195 million doses of an h1n1 vaccine are expected by the end of the year. each patient will likely need two doses. the first batch of h1n1 vaccinations will not be distributed until mid-october at the earliest. among the first to receive them will be healthcare workers on the front lines. what kind of plans have you set into place to anticipate h1n1 and seasonal flu this year? >> staffing plans, extending hours, recalling staff are all part of what we have in place. >> chris, the hospitals that we've spoken to say they already have made plans to house patients in other parts of the hospital should other parts become overcrowded. but we want to emphasize people having things like chest pain will still be going to the emergency rooms. so in terms of flu symptoms emergency rooms really should just be used for emergencies. >> doctor let's clear up any confusion. exactly how many shots are people going to need this fall? all told. >> well we'll probably get that answer in the next two days here at this conference. but it looks as if the answer will be three. one for the seasonal flu virus and two for the h1n1 virus. that's thought to be because people have not been exposed to it before. so they don't have the natural immune memory to protect them against those viruses. the other thing that's not known, chris, is whether some of those doses could be given simultaneously at the same doctor's visits. you might be able to get the seasonal flu virus and one of the h1n1 doses together. but we'll keep you posted. >> dr. jennifer ashton for us down at the cdc convention in atlanta. thank you, doctor. i hope you like shots because, if you didn't like just one shot every year now it looks like you're going to need three. >> there's another option for children dr. ashton and i were talking about. instead of the shot also possibly get a mist. you should talk to your pediatrician because a lot of parents are hesitant to go with the shots. >> doesn't help us adults though. >> no it does not. >> let's check in with russ mitchell at the news desk. today the cia inspector general releases a report detailing alleged abuse of terror suspects in cia prisons. it details how agents threatened "uss cole" bombing suspects with a power drill to make them talk. meantime "the new york times" says the justice department wants to reopen the cases reversing the decision of the bush administration. president obama and his family are vacationing on martha's vineyard this morning. there is no escaping the debate over healthcare reform. cbs news white house correspondent chip reid is on martha's vineyard. chip, good morning. >> good morning, russ. healthcare dominated the sunday talk shows, but for once we don't know if the president is paying attention because he is on the first real vacation of his presidency. the first family arrived here sunday afternoon. the mostly liberal summer enclave off the massachusetts coast is friendly territory for the president, who's taking a break from the fight for healthcare reform which continues despite his absence. >> the president clearly knows a public option a public insurance option is necessary for real reform. >> the president has told me a lot of times he wants bipartisanship, and part of the problem is you get conflicting signals out of the white house. >> reporter: the blue heron farm, a secluded 30-acre estate that boasts its own basketball court and putting green, is where the obamas will be living this week. the president has no official events scheduled, but vacationers are hoping to catch a glimpse of the first family. >> yeah that would be awesome. >> i think it's really going to bring a good boost to the economy, especially being the end of the summer. >> reporter: now one thing that's going to give a huge boost to the economy is all the obama paraphernalia that's dominating all of the store windows around here. it's not just t-shirts it's baseball caps and magnets and coffee mugs and glasses. and restaurants are selling the baracko taco. restaurants are selling ale to the chief. and all of it is selling like crazy. if the president wanted to find someplace he'd be welcomed with open arms he sure found it in martha martha's vineyard. >> part of the martha's vineyard stimulus plan i guess. fire crews are launching an all out assault on wildfires in greece this morning. about 37,000 acres have burned in the northern suburbs of athens. thousands have been evacuated. more than a dozen water dropping planes resumed operations today to fight the planes. in santa barbara, california, a small plane made an emergency landing on a busy freeway. it landed in oncoming traffic yesterday after the pilot told air traffic controllers he was out of fuel. the plane collided with three cars, but amazingly no one was haurt. in baseball, a rare unassisted triple play. phillies second baseman eric bruntlett caught a line drive, take a look stepped on second ask tagged out the third mets runner. it's the 15th unassisted triple play in baseball history, and only the second time it ended a game. the first one was some 82 years ago. phillies won the game 9-7. pretty cool. it is coming up on 7:12. dave price is off this morning. mr. lonnie quinn from "the saturday early show" has your first check of therlrlrlrl weather. >> i've got to tell you, russ my favorite part of the news block. it sits and resonate ins my head. the baracko taco. you know what else i like? try cranergy from ocean spray. hurricane bill is now a tropical storm heading out into the atlantic. it never came near the u.s. but it churned up the ocean causing massive waves. and at one popular tourist site in maine, those waves turned deadly. cbs news correspondent randall pinkston has more from martha's vineyard, massachusetts. good morning, randall. >> reporter: good morning, julie julie. eyewitnesses say it was a chaotic scene. by one estimate 1,000 people were watching the wild surf when suddenly a massive wave struck a group of about 20, some of them swept out to sea. it was around noon sunday when what the coast guard calls a rogue wave hit the thunder hole viewing station with tremendous force. >> we launched a 47-foot life boat from our station. we also launched two aircraft from cape cod. >> reporter: five people were swept out to sea. two were pulled out after about an hour. but a 12-year-old girl from belfast, maine, and a 7-year-old new york city girl and her 55-year-old father were not so fortunate. the unidentified 7-year-old was recovered after more than five hours at sea. she was later declared dead at a local hospital. her father and the unrelated 12-year-old were recovered alive. no word on their condition. one dramatic rescue was caught on tape. >> get them to the boat guys. >> they threw a rope out, but the person had been in the water for a long time. one of the coast guard rescuers jumped in the water and pulled them to safety and everyone cheered. >> that was randall pinkston reporting. joining us now from southwest harbor maine, are coast guard petty officers kyle hatch and joshua mcgowan, who helped with the rescue. gentlemen, good morning. >> good morning, julie. >> petty officer mcgowan let me begin with you. you actually pulled three people to your rescue boat two who survived and the 7-year-old girl who did not. can you describe for us what you were up against in this rescue mission. >> in this rescue mission, we were actually about to get under way for some heavy weather training with another station, which is just north of us. that's when we got the call. once we got on the scene, we were in seas approximately 15 feet to 17 feet. when we recovered the first individual, once we located the second individual, we grabbed a hold of him and went to seal harbor. the swells were still approximately 15 to 17 -- turning into 15 to 20 foot surf near shore. >> how difficult was this? at any point did you think my life might be taken in trying to do my job here? >> no my main concern was getting the people out of the water. i feel that's what most of the boat crew on board, the 47 motor life boat was concerned about, just getting those individuals out of the water and getting them to safety. >> petty officer hatch, let me turn to you. can you describe to us the condition that the survivors were in as they were being pulled onto your boat. >> yes, julie. the condition of the survivors were obviously hypothermic. the water temperature here in this location in maine rarely exceeds 59 to 60 degrees. so the hypothermia was obviously a concern. both victims were very pale. their symptoms of hypothermia. skin was cold to the touch. all those things were signs. the female the first female we pulled on board, i believe she was 14 years of age. she also showed some minor signs of shock. we immediately started treating for shock. and she actually did recover. so the well-being of the individuals was obviously our utmost concern while on top of that looking for any more people that might have been in the water. we did make every attempt to save all lives that day. our only regret is that the 7-year-old girl didn't make it. >> yeah. absolutely. gentlemen, do you -- do either of you think that this observation deck should have been closed or off limits to tourists yesterday? >> very nice of you, jules. i'm very embarrassed. speaking of the weather, it's getting a little bit better out here. it was brutal all last week and this weekend. now it's leveling off, as lonnie said to about 85 to 89. coming up this morning an alarming new report that teens are abusing prescription adhd drugs. we'll tell you how they get them and what to look for to see if your teen is abusing these drugs. also ahead, what you need to know now that the cash for clunkers program is officially set to end today. what does this mean for you if you have a clunker you planned to turn in? we'll have a full report coming up. first, an update on south carolina governor mark sanford back in the news this morning. it turns out having an affair is not the only problem he's dealing with. an investigation by the associated press finds he failed to report 35 trips on private planes as required by state law. the ap found that sanford, who took office in 2003 had not disclosed on state ethics forms or campaign reports who had paid for the travel as required by state law. sanford was been trying to regroup after admitting to a year long affair with an argentinean woman. >> and then i apologize, and i ask for your forgiveness. >> as for jenny sanford, the governor's estranged wife she spoke out about the affair last week. she said these affairs are almost like an addiction to alcohol or pornography. she's moved out of the governor's residence with their four children. she says it's up to her husband to decide if it he wants to stay married. the ball is in his court. joining us now for an exclusive interview this morning, two of jenny sanford's close friends, marjorie wentworth and virginia lane. good morning ladies. let me begin with you, virginia. your friend of 20 years. you know her very well. first of all, just how is she doing? >> she's doing as well as expected. she's always had this amazing ability to focus when all these trials are going on around her. focus on what's right, what's wrong, and how to get to protecting her boys. so well. >> i know that she knew about this affair before it went public and, in fact told you before we found out about it. was she the same strong resilient person back then that we see now when she initially learned of it? >> yes, in many ways. all of us go through trials and instead of sitting back she stands tall takes it with the confidence of self-awareness and a clear sense of right and wrong. >> tell us about that conversation when she told you. >> it was heartbreaking. mark's the last person on the planet we thought would have -- >> were those her words too? >> absolutely. >> what did she say to you about it? >> everybody was shocked. and she -- i think it was easier that she knew about it months before it went public. and i think it would have played out differently had that not happened. but, again, the last person you'd ever expect this to happen to. >> i mean they seemed like the perfect couple with beautiful children, and his star was rising politically. so everybody was shocked. but she's doing great. we're here to say that she's really doing great. >> how did she find out about it? >> she found a letter. >> from her to him? >> one or the other. >> confronted him, and then what happened? did he not deny it? >> he didn't deny it no. >> and in the months before we knew what was the focus of their marriage in those months? after she found out about the affair, before everybody knew about it. >> she's got this amazing capacity for forgiveness and very quickly said i can forgive adultery but i cannot condone it regularly in a marriage. that strength to be able to see that so quickly. >> so for him to take that trip to argentina after they knew isn't that surprising? she had said i don't condone this, and he did. >> yeah, absolutely not. she did not know where he was, but they were, you know in a trial separation and she was with the boys. so how could she know? >> are you surprised that she was not like other political wives we have seen standing right there next to her man at that news conference playing the role of the good wife? >> no. that's the thing about this if you know her like we do everything about her behavior is not surprising. i mean she's just -- >> and she loves mark and loves mark's family. they're good people. it's just tragic that it's going on. she's handling it with grace and dignity and kindness and love. >> she really is. >> i think that a lot of people are wondering if she really believes that this marriage has a future. you two know her very well. what do you think? >> she's giving it her best shot. >> she's giving it her best. she wants to be able to look her kids in the eye, as she says and know that she did everything she could to heal the marriage. you know she's able to look at the big picture and the whole sweep of her life. and if it's possible, she wants it to happen. >> virginia you are the godmother of one of her sons. >> both of them actually. >> how are the boys doing? >> they had to start a new school. in the last couple of weeks of summer had to do all that summer reading and summer math. moving into it nicely. >> do they know exactly what's going on? >> yes. >> and what is their opinion of the situation? >> they love their father. >> forgive? >> and their mother. i hope so. >> what do you think jenny sanford wants everyone to take from her example? or does she not want to be a role model for the wrong thing? >> i think we're seeing more and more of the use of adhd drugs in general because of increased awareness of children that do have problems with attention, and i think parents want to help them to maximize their performance. the more we prescribe the medication the more it's sort of out there in the community, and the more there's a risk for abuse. >> what kind of high are these kids getting from these adhd drugs? >> it's really more of a performance-enhancing type of high. they want to study harder. they want to be able to focus better. they want to be able to stay up later. there are some people who take it for the appetite suppressant quality. they want to not be hup gri during the day and try to lose weight. that's another reason it's taken taken. >> are you saying these drugs are safe? they're unsafe? you would really have to be particular about what's on the labels? >> that's a really important point. when these medication,used properly and the way they're prescribed, they're really really safe medications. what we need to educate our teens will is taking them when they're not prescribed or in quantities that exceed what's recommended. >> how would a teenager typically without a prescription get their hands on these drugs? >> most commonly actually from friends. they give them out because they say, hey, this is helping me. let me help you out. >> big problem too. parents need to be on the lookout. >> that's right. i think that parents need to be on the lookout. they need to talk to their children say, even though it's a prescription and your friend may have it if it's not recommended for you, don't take it. if we can really start to get that message is cross to teenage teenagers and show them it's dangerous and not safe they'll listen to us. >> kids that are watching right now and are thinking about doing this or have friends that have done this how dangerous is this? >> as a matter of fact i don't. something tells me when you meet the gentlemen responsible for those herb ins your studio you are going to want an herb garden. we'll show you how to do that. first let's go inside to russ mitchell at the news desk. the massive search for the reality show contestant wanted for the murder of his ex-wife is over. ryan jenkins' body was found yesterday in a remote canadian motel. the motel manager said a young woman checked jenkins into the motel on thursday. jenkins apparently hanged himself. the mutilated body of his ex-wife and model jasmine fiore was found in a garbage bin some 20 miles from los angeles on august 18th. a group of surf watchers was swept away by a large wave caused by hurricane bill. at acad ya national park in maine, a big wave carried 20 people away yesterday. a 7-year-old girl died. her father and a 12-year-old girl survived. newly released video shows former cuban leader fidel castro appearing healthy and rest. it was the first time in more than a year that castro appeared on cuban tv. it showed castro meeting with a group of students from venezuela. elizabeth edwards, the wife of former senator john edwards, has opened a furniture store. and her husband attended the opening over the weekend. michelle guillen is here with more. >> good morning, russ. despite ongoing rumors about her husband's affair elizabeth edwards is taking steps towards a new chapter in her life. with the opening of her new furniture store in chapel hill north carolina it appears that elizabeth edwards has turned over a new leaf. >> my mother had a charity store when i was growing up. >> reporter: but the celebration comes amid of the rumors she isn't afraid to address. in a recent interview, she even discussed a paternity test that will confirm whether or not her husband is the father of a former campaign staffer's child. >> my expectation is at some point something happens. i hope for the sake of this child, that it happens in a quiet way. >> reporter: all this while federal investigators focus on allegations that john edwards misused campaign funds to cover up the affair. something he wasn't open to speaking about. >> doing the things i need to do with my family helping elizabeth support what she's doing here. >> reporter: and despite even more headlines claiming that john edwards is helping his former mistress move closer to his family's waterfront home the edwards appear tighter than ever. >> we still have a family to run and now a business to run as well. and so we just keep our eye on that ball and just try to ignore what supermarket tabloids have to say. >> john edwards has not denied that he has taken or will take a paternity test to determine whether he's the father of riel hunter's 18 month old baby. finally, stefania fernandez is the new miss universe. the 18-year-old from venezuela was crowned last night. it's the first time a contestant from the same country won a title for the second straight year. it is now 8:05. mr. lonnie quinn is out on the plaza with another check of the weather. >> good morning to you, russ. russ, i've got to tell you. stick with me for a second.aeae this big crew here is from troy missouri and you guys are here specifically to see who on the cbs early show staff? who are the people that attach themselves? they actually aren't reality. they're people who have an emptiness that they want to fill with something that's very shallow and very trophy like. this is the kind of tragedy that fathers should talk to their sons about, being able to learn about how to tolerate rejection. and that women should talk to their daughters about staying away from men who value them as trophies who can't handle the rejection of it when it ends because these are the cocktails that end in domestic violence, and this is an ultimate tragedy. >> but this seems like someone who had mental issues problems far beyond that. to cut off somebody's fingers. >> well you know there are two things. first of all -- >> to take out her teeth so she wouldn't be identified. >> there are two things here. first of all, the mental issues of the reality show. we value celebrity. we create people who are obsessed with getting a blond who wants a millionaire. so we give a lot of attention, and we create stars. and people develop their whole identity and themselves around being seen and being known. when it comes to the cutting off of the fingers, listen, when i started in forensic psychiatry, if you heard a crime like this you would figure that it's somebody who was schooled in prison about how to keep themselves from getting caught. people are now home schooled on being a criminal from primetime dramas. they learn. they learn from what they watch how to conceal a crime so they are not going to get caught. there's a responsibility issue. what are we teaching people? >> this is your sort of snack category. when it comes to granola bars i think a lot of us you know they can have a lot of sugar or a lot of fat. this is really controlled in calories calories. the flavor is dessert like. it's really deck dent. you should try it. it's a favorite. >> and those are sour patch kids up there, right? we're here to help. with a quick tutorial on today's herbs, good morning. good to see you both again. let's go with some of the pros and cons. fresh herbs versus ones you buy in the market. >> fresh herbs, especially if you grow them are so much better. you go out and pick it. you can't beat it. the ones you find in the market is great. the dry herbs, i wouldn't bother. >> let's talk about the essentials. these are the four basics the four main herbs, correct? tarragon, which is the first. >> one of our absolute favorites. great flavor. fantastic in salads. >> great in bearnais sauce. absolutely great. much cilantro is great. nice citrusy bold flavor. >> i love using it with oysters. >> so many different kinds of mint. chocolate mint, peppermint. >> mint julep and mojitos. >> and lemon thyme, which is great in ice cream. we're going to do a viniagrette here. we're using the tarragon which we were just talking about. also going to use some parsley to give this si nice green color. all this is really easy and summery because we don't want to be cooking a lot. tarragon parsley. use a couple of kinds of mustard. a whole grain mustard and a dijon mustard just to give it a little balance. >> herb gardens in new york city so popular because people don't have a lot of space. there are a lot of roof gardens. such a great way to go to step out there on the patio and grab a few herbs and bring them in and cook. >> you can add so much to your cooking in such a small space. >> the neighbors next to me have it. it's such a great smell. >> do you steal your neighbor's? >> jump over the balcony. >> we've got extra virgin olive oil and pure olive oil. doesn't taste completely like olives, but you get the nice taste of the extra virgin olive oil. that's the finished viniagrette. throw this in the blender, and hopefully it works. but the finished one looks a lot nicer. >> and spread it right over the top? >> we have all these beautiful greens. if you want to pour some of that right on here. >> more herbs in the salad itself too. you can use those. >> very well dressed. >> thank you. >> and i like to use my hands. not quite as well dressed as you. >> close. >> there we go. beautiful garden greens. >> i might just try this. >> give it a try right out of the bowl. >> we have two minutes to go. what do we have next? >> we're going to make another little thing in a blender. we obviously didn't want to cook anything today. >> that is well dressed. >> we're going to make a sauce with cilantro. get lots of cilantro and this vietnamese coriander, which is a lot like cilantro. parsley for looks. serrano peppers to give it some kick. little ginger, shallots. little lime juice. these are the serrano peppers, by the way. you've got to be really careful with those. >> spicy? >> wicked spicy. wicked, as we say in maine up at the aeros. and a little corn oil and coconut milk which is the secret ingredient in this. it's a quick curry, and it's fantastic with lobster. it's great with other things too. >> it's got to be the easiest curry in the world. >> especially in the summer. you want something quick and light that has great taste. just going back to that salled a, you're able to pick up on some of the different flavors. >> it's really subtle. all the different herbs coming through there. all the different greens. >> now, just like you made a heart for your mommy in valentine's. you're going to do this little heart. >> how are you?
