It warmed up the road. Make it difficult for what came down last night and today to stick to the road. You will wake up to snow out there on the car, grass and bushes, that kind of a deal. Not too much going on this morning. There is another wave of precipitation moving across the region. Now were in the up side of the temperatures for the day. Well start going up here around sunrise. This is the wave now. One last night. This one will provide a chance for showers closer to the coastline it will develop into a storm again that will move up to the northeast. The temperatures are above freezing. With that our temperatures are going to be close enough to freezing, they could pulldown cold air to give us flurries throughout the day and the afternoon. First, heres what people are talking about today. A woman robbed right outside of a Anne Arundel County mall yesterday. The suspect ran away from the scene, leading place on a wild chase. As Meghan Mccorkell exchanges, wjz Eyewitness News was there. Reporter good morning. Witnesses are saying that they saw the suspect driving erratically, nearly hitting people, followed closely by police. Weaving through traffic at dangerous speeds a Wild Police Chase ends in west baltimore. All right. Reporter the driver of this suv, 49yearold bennett was arrested after he crashed into the row home. He was dodging in and out of traffic. We were scared. We thought he was going to crash into us. Reporter Police Pursuing bennett after he robbed a 36 yearold woman at knife point. She was getting into her car and she pulled a knife and demanded her purse. She stabbed her in the hand. Witnesses described his car. It was spotted by a state trooper on 295 who tried to stop him. He kept going. It is very dangerous. Reporter managements at Anne Arundel County released a statement to wjz Eyewitness News. From sky eye chopper 13, you can see the Massive Police response. On the ground, we have Maryland State Police. We have the Baltimore City police, baltimore sheriff. Reporter the suv left a massive hole right here in the side of this building. A City Building inspector had to be called in to make sure that the structure is stable. Bennett is facing Armed Robbery and assault charges. The stabbing victim is expected to be okay. It has been almost two weeks since someone fatally stabbed a teen during the ravens victory parade and no arrest. The 16yearold is laid to rest. Rochelle ritchie with the latest. Reporter these pictures caught the final moments of live for 15yearold smith. It was unnecessary for a fight to breakout and he was stabbed. Reporter the person in purple is the suspect in his murder. We know it is an isolated incident. The victims knew their attackers. Reporter his funeral this afternoon brought broken hearts to say goodbye. Family and dozens of his fellow students from patternson high school. Nobody has died. Reporter this, this, this is they are going on with our Young Children today. Reporter on february 5th, Baltimore City celebrated the ravens super bowl win. Police are saying smith and several other people got into a fight. He was stabbed several times. He had a heart attack on the way to the hospital and died. The city network is the most Important Service that police have to track down his killer. Theredics are reviewing footage. Reporter it happened in the middle of the afternoon with thousands in the downtown area and police, but that did not stop the attack. It is awful to here. Reporter many are hoping those who recognize the person in purple will not stand by and not let him get away with murder. Two other people were stabbed during the attack. They survived. Police believe that he took his own life. Police discovered dorners body in a cabin in the San Bernardino mountains. Officers are not sure if he was killed in the gunfire, the flames or own hand. He killed four people, including two Police Officers. The officer is reviewing a report that responding officers may have initially set fire to the cabin. Investigators are calling the fire accidental. President barack obama takes his gun control message back to his hometown of chicago. He is vow to use the full power of his office. Reporter president barack obama wiped waterer as he honored the six adults who died in sandy hook elementary. They gave their lives to protect the precious children in their care. Reporter family members accepted the awards on behalf of the woman who are among 18 to receive the nations second highest civilian honor. The president ial citizens medal. Marys school psychologist. The high honor. All that i can hope that if i was in the same situation, i would have what they had to run out the door. Last year, there were 443 murders with a firearm, on the streets of this city. 65 of those victims were 18 and under. So, thats the equivalent of a newtown every four months. We did have snow showers last night and rain and snow showers, but the key is that we started yesterday off in the 30s. We got up to the, almost 60 degrees. Yeah. In parts of the area. Everything was so warm. By the time the rain and then snow came down. The roads were so warm nothing has stuck to the roads. But you cannot discount the fact that there could be slick spots this morning. Temperatures are very close to freezing. 35 at bwi marshall. The outlying areas are colder. So take it slow this morning. Things will meltdown nicely. You will wake up to snow on the car and the bushes and the grass this morning. 35 is the temperature. 96 humidity. As you see, temperatures are hovering around freezing in parts of the area. Winds are pretty light right now. The winds are going to pick up. This system as it continues to move across the region and gets to the coastline is going to intensify and move to the northeast. As it starts to form along the coast. We are expecting to pull down colder air than what is in place. That is the air that is sinking into the mid atlantic. As the system continues to progress off to the east, we are expecting a coastal storm to the northeast. There is snow on the north side of it. There is a bit of a transition there. Because of the temperatures we are on the rain side now. We cannot rule out snow showers as the temperatures again start to get pulled down. There is definitely cold air close by. As it moves out. The winds move out. The High Pressure builds in. The high with the low, it moves out wednesday and through tomorrow and the temperatures in the 30s. Incredible video out of russia where a meteor explodes above a rural area, injury ag thousand people. As Edward Lawrence reports for wjz Eyewitness News, many thought the world was coming to an end. Reporter the meteor exploded over a small russian town and caused a shock wave. Glass shattered injuring hundreds of people. This woman went to the hospital with a bloody arm and others with cuts on their faces and heads. The explosion rocked a mountain range. Cameras throughout the area caught the meteor as it streaked across the sky. Scientists are saying it was the size of a bus and traveling 33,000 miles per hour. Some fragments fell to the ground. The meteor came without warning, stunning a canadian hockey playing living in russia. I heard this loud bang and live in the 34 story building. The lights are shaking and car alarms going off. It was just incredible. Reporter a zinc factory was badly damaged, the roof and wall collapsed. Meteor strikes with a large impact are rare. These things happen once every few decades. Investigators are saying dorner killed four people including two officers and wounded three others. Maryland lawmakers are working to ban illegal marijuana or synthetic marijuana. In annapolis, lawmakers have introduced measures that would make the manufacturer, possession or sale of synthetic paul illegal. This kind of pot is known as spice or k2. The man who inspired the world could spend the rest of his life behind bars. Reporter Oscar Pistorius held his heads in his hands and sobbed as prosecutors accused him of the murder of his girlfriend. The 26yearold is charged with killing Reeva Steenkamp in his home. Prosecutors are saying pistorius shot his girlfriend in the Early Morning hours of valentines day in a possible domestic dispute. Family members issued a statement, insisting that the spinser not guilty of murder. Police are saying pistorius shot the supermodel four times in the head and upper body. Local media reported gunshots blasted through a bathroom door. The shooting is making headlines around the world. The sprinter was nicknamed blade runner for his running blades. One of his hobbies was target shooting. A wright the New York Times magazine got a surprised invitation last year. We went to the firing range. We shot his 9millimeter semi automatic pistol. As Alex Demetrick explains, the killers were a pair of dogs. Reporter there are still photographs of smoking joe and billie jeanler, but that is all that is left. On saturday night they were killed inside of their pens in this pasadena neighborhood. I saw a wolf overtop of my dead goat. She called her next door neighbor for help. He brought a gun. It looked like it was being aggressive. So, to protect himself and us being out here, he shot it. Reporter it the wolfs closest cousin, a husky. On the internet, there are sites dedicated to the breed for their intelligence and escape artist abilities. The husky that was killed dugout of its yard and join another dog that is running loose. We located the owner with the dog. There is no history with animal control. They are a wonderful breed. This is a dog breeder. You must work it. Because it is a working breed. Not too much on the roads. Thats a good thing. It will not slow you down today. We did have a basically a burst of snow come through here last night. Started off with rain around sun down and then the snow came through and cold air. That was the first wave and the second wave now, gray skies and not much rain. It is moving across the area. As the moves to the coast. It is a coastal storm. Pulling down coastal air to the west. That will present wintery snow or mix around the area. 36 at bwi. A woman is robbed and stabbed right outside of a Anne Arundel County mall, it happened in broad daylight. Police are saying the suspect ran away from the scene and leaving them on a wild chase throughout the streets of baltimore. As Meghan Mccorkell explains. Wjz Eyewitness News was there moments after the chase came to a sudden end. Reporter good morning. Witnesses are saying that they saw that suspect driving erratically, nearly hitting people followed close lay by police. Weaving through traffic at dangerous speeds, a Wild Police Chase ends in wisconsin baltimore. We were scared for our lives. Reporter the driver of this suv, 49yearold bennett was arrested after he crashed into this row home. He was dodging in and out of traffic. We thought he was going to run head on into us. We were scared. Reporter Police Pursuing benefit after he robbed a 36 yearold woman at knife point in the mall parking lot. She was getting into her car and she pum adknight and demanded her purse. She struggled and he stabbed her in the hand. Witnesses identified his car as the green suv. It was spotted by a state trooper on 295. This is very dangerous. Reporter management at the mall released a statement to wjz Eyewitness News from sky eye chopper 13, you can see the Massive Police response. On the ground, weve got Maryland State Police. Weve got the Baltimore City police. Baltimore sheriff. The suv heft a massive hole inside of the building. A city build nothing spect hardware to be called in to make sure the structure is stable. Bennett is facing robbery and assault charges. The stabbing victim is expected to be okay. Meghan mccorkell, wjz Eyewitness News. Reporter and the department is saying no officers were injured in that chase. It has been almost two weeks since someone fatally stabbed a teen during a ravens victory parade and still no arrests. As the 16yearold is laid to rest. Rochelle ritchie has the latest. This pictures from a Baltimore CityPolice Camera caught the finest moments of life for the 15yearold smith. It was unnecessary. They were fighting and he got stabbed. Reporter the person in purple is the primary suspect in his murder. What we know this far, it is an isolated incident. The victims knew their attackers. Reporter the funeral this afternoon brought broken hearts to say goodbye. Families and dozens of his fellow suspects from patterson high school. Why. The things that are going on with our Young Children today. Reporter on february 5th. Baltimore city celebrated the ravens super bowl win police are saying that several people got into a fight. Smith was stabbed several times. He had a heart attack on the way to the hospital and died. The city Camera Network is the most important source that police have to track down his killer. Detectives are reviewing that footage. Reporter the fight happened in the middle of the afternoon with thousands in the downtown area including police, but that did not stop the brutal attack. It was awful to hear that. Reporter reporter many are hoping those who recognize the person in person believed to be responsible will not stand by and let him get with murder. New information in the death of fugitive cop killer, Christopher Dorner. Police believe that he took his own life during a shootout with officers. Police discovered his body in a burnt out cabin in the san burr dino mountains. Officers were not sure if he was killed in the gunfire, by the flames on his own hand. He killed four people including two Police Officers. Meanwhile, the department is refuting a report that responding officers may have intentionally set fire to the cabin. Investigators are calling the fire accidental. A major cleanup effort is underway in russia after a meteor explodes over a small town. Watch this. Well that fireball created a shock wave that could be felt for miles. The shattered windows and 4,000 buildings and about 1,000 people were injured. Russian leaders saying 50 people remain in the hospital this morning with non life threatening injuries. Wjz Eyewitness News is following breaking news this morning. A firefighter is injured battling a 2 alarm fire in howered county. It happened this morning in columbia. There are few details, but the fire displaced nine residents. One firefighter was treated for a minor injury at the scene. No word on what caused the fire. Before you head downtown, you should know one of the major arteries is shutdown in baltimore this weekend. Light street will be closed from conway to prat streets a crews replace a pedestrian bridge, it will reopen on monday morning. They are replacing the bridge because it is corroded and rusted. Avoid the area. All right. I keep looking at the video from russia. I just wonder, as a meteorologist, if a meteorologist predicted or, you know, forecast the meteor. I cant say that i have ever looked at a forecast and said 30 chance of a meteor today. It is so bright. It looks like the second sun. All that come on the dates of the mayan calendar, people would have been running for cover. I know. Nothing that here. Thank goodness. We do have snow showers. A few more before the day is out. 35 is your temperature now. And 35 is the dew point. We are seeing showers rolling across the area. We are going to be dealing with another round, much like we had yesterday evening of light rain and potentially light snow coming down before this afternoon is over. No accumulation is expected. The temperatures are above freezing. The system is likely going to pulldown cold air before it is said and done. Winds from the westnorthwest at 3 miles per hour. Around the state, the temperatures ranging from 19 in oakland to 32 in cumberland. Winds are pretty light right now. Mostly from the northwest. Thats our flow. They are going to pickup through the afternoon. The system that were watching is going to continue to progress across the state with the cold air close by. You can see the darker blues indicating the temperature drop in baltimore, virginia, ohio. Those are the temperatures that are going to be hovering. The system came through in one wave. The first wave that you see offshore. The next wave coming through. This the cold front, an arctic front. The low that will develop as the system makes its way to the coastline, it is going to intensify. We are in the rain zone here. Temperatures are above freezing. The cold air around new england. This storm is going to impact new england and new york, the, the areas, the same one that was hit last week is going to get impacted again. The storm is going to intensify as it makes its way there and High Pressure moves in as the lows move away. The pressure is going to build. The winds will pick up. Tomorrow, well be dealing with a wind chill that feels like the 20s for much of the day. The temperatures will get up to the low 30s. The next chance of rain is on tuesday. The blade runner sobbed in court. He shot and killed his girlfriend, riva 10 camp four times inside of his home and a 9millimeter gun was recovered at the scene. Oscar pistorius is in custody until tuesday. Jesse jackson, jr. , son of the civil rights leader pleads guilty to federal charges. Jackson is accused of misusing 3 4 of a Million Dollars to buy expensive watches and fur coats. His wife is charged separately with tax fraud. Both have signed plea deals. Under the deal, jackson will have to repay the misused funds and possibly spend time behind bars. Caught on tape, a suspect leads police on a highspeed chase and crashes into a patrol car. Look at this, within seconds the driver slams into the police cruiser. He was traveling 140 miles per hour. If you watch closely, you can see the offer is officer is out of his car. Luckily, you know, training kicks in and you thought when there is a case coming and blocking the highway, you find cover. Police are saying the chase started after the suspect, johnson, refuseed to pullover for a traffic stop. He was killed in the wreck. His 5yearold son was also in the car. The boy sustained serious injuries. But survived it. A Popular Group of action heros celebrating a major milestone. The Power Rangers have now been out for 20 years. The multicolored superheros first appeared on our tv screens back in 1993. The show became the most watched program in the u. S. A. This year, it is called African American inventions. Okay. So, were looking at it now mark. You have a history with inventions. You are an architectural engineer by trade. So, you know about inventions. I was an engineer that was my last job. I left that in 1999 to become an artist and also im a proud graduate from baltimore. Okay. Okay. Tell us about this. Whats on canvas there. How did you interpret Architectural Engineering and design into this piece of art . There is a combination of the things i love. Im a big lover of mathematics, science, an engineer and also artist. So, is a combination of all of that. I was fascinated what i discovered about inventions and things we used to that we known know that africanamericans invented or created improvements to existing inventions. Wow. Im looking at all of it. I know the stop light. Potato chips. Yes. A gentlemen by the name of mr. Crumb. He invented the potato chip. He worked in a hotel. One of the customers was upset. So, he went in the back and cut in the slices of potatoes, cooked them in the oven and put salt on them and brought them out. Everybody loved them. He ran across a gentlemen by mr. Lay, who took it national. So, thats where lays potato ships came from. There dry cleaner hanger. Yes. The dry cleaner was invented by mr. Jenkins. This is interesting. It was first called dry scouring, it was really well known. So, he took that money to buy his family members out of slavery. He was the first African American to get a patent. You. A proposal to form a special court to review president Barack Obamas use of Unmanned Aircraft gets support from gates. Gates understand lawmakerss worries overusing drones to target alqaeda operatives and allies. But they can be used to fight terrorists abroad. New police, the service and Weather Service are exploring the use of drones here in the united states. Could the eyes in the ski see more than they are supposed to . This is the smoldering wreckage after a navy drone costing 170 million crashed last year during a test flight on marylands eastern shore. For many it was the first time they heard the powerful aircraftwise no one in the cockpits were flying above us. There is no stopping this technology. After who thinks they can put the jeanie back in the box, that is silliness. Er they used aircraft around the world. Wartime technology is coming home, from highways to your neighborhoods. Thousands of drones are keeping an eye on the weather to helping police keep an eye on you. You have men and women looking at monitoring providing control signals through the network to antenna as on the vehicle. This this is the Naval Air Station in st. Marys county. Wjz Eyewitness News gained access to the secure facility where drones are put to the test. The massive plane is controlled remotely by trained operators on the ground. Again, no pilot is inside through a series of censors and satellites. They also track storms like hurricane sandy, flying at high altitudes for very long times measuring wind speed and direction. You seeing things in higher detail. Reporter but they are not stomping there. Police departments could use droned a check cars, catch speeders and track criminals in baltimore and beyond. You can look and see the contents in the truck. And this the future . The answer is yes. Our Unmanned Systems are reliable. They are effective, they are under control at all times. Reporter but all of the intraeyes looking down add you with a little bit or no regulation spur alarms that drones could be spying. That is the computer pettable with our society and poses real danger unless we act to prevent it. Reporter matt is in charge of a Group Pushing for maryland to lead in the development of Unmanned Aircraft. He does not see concerns over spying slowing them down. Applying the protections in place with a new technology. There are very legitimate concerns that will cause many people to be wary. Here at the bottom of the hour the temperatures are in the 30s. We have a great start to the damp. A little bit damp. Showers rolled through here last night with showers have pretty much coated the grass and bushes, roads not impacted too much by this. The second wave is moving into the region now and will make it to the coast. As it does, it will intensify to the northeast. That could present for us snow showers through the afternoon. It pulls down cold air. 36 degrees right now at bwi marshall and around freezing to the west of the region. That will mix with the moisture as it is kicked back from the coast. In the forecast, we have a chance for showers through the afternoon. But the temperatures around 30 degrees will not allow for up complications. We will see an improvement over the next day or so. Where a meteor exploded above a rural area injuring nearly a thousand people. Edward lawrence reported for wjz Eyewitness News, that people thought the world was coming to an end. Reporter the meteor exploded over a small russian town and caused a shock wave. Glass shattered injuring hundreds of people. This woman went to the hospital with a bloody arm. Others with cuts on their faces and heads. The explosion rocked a mountain range. Cameras throughout the area caught the meteor as the streaked across the sky. Scientists are saying it was the size of a large bus and traveling 33,000 miles per hour. Some fragments fell to the ground. The meteor came without warning stunning a korean hockey player living in russia. I heard this loud bang. Live in the 24 story building. The lights are shaking and car alarms going off and it was just incredible. Reporter a zinc factory was badly damaged. The roof and wall collapsed. Meteor strikes with a large impact are rare. These things happen once every few decades. Wjz Eyewitness News. The meetjure is not connected to the astroid that passed closer to earth yesterday. A Wild Police Chase braked out yesterday after a stabbing at a mall. One man is behind bars this morning. The driver of this suv, 49 bennett was arrested after he crashed into it row home in west baltimore. He led Police Officer on a high speed chase after stabbing and robbing a woman. She is expected to be okay. Bennett is facing armed rob hear and assault charges. Prosectors are saying the former University Virginia lacrosse player accused of killing love should not be give an new trial. Last night lawyers for George Huguely filed an appeal, saying that their client was denied the right to a fair jury and other violations. Prosecutors are rebuffing those claims. Hughley is serving a sentence for the murder of love. More questions linger this morning if anybody will be able to collect the 1 million reward offered in the hunt for Christopher Dorner. Several people are lining up to claim the money, but it could take a long Legal Process first. I believe it was my call that directly led to the end. Reporter fighting for the 1. 2 million reward. They need to do the right thing. Reporter this scout leader wants his fair share. It was clear that it was Christopher Dorner, he was coming at me with a gun. Reporter when Christopher Dorner carjacked his truck this week. He called the San Bernardino deputy patrolling the area. Paul, he took high truck. He told him where to find dorner. Are was he headed . Down class road. When was he found dead . Down glass road. Reporter she is saying that he is entitled to 1 2 of the money to share with the couple who called 911. The mayor offered the reward for information leading to dorners capture, but he is worried. Those who put up the reward may try to avoid payment, because he was not captured, but killed. If they dont pay that out, it kind of justifies some of the things that christopher donor was complaining about. Dorner killed four people including two officers and wounded three others. Maryland lawmakers are working to ban synthetic marijuana. In annapolis, many of them introduced measure to make the manufacturer or possession or sale of synthetic paul illegal. This pot is known as spice or k2. The mimics the effects of thc, the primary ingredients in marijuana. A photo of a Grammy Nominated rapper with two maryland state troopers sparks controversy this morning. 2 chainz was arrested on drug charges on his way to a concert on the eastern shore. Maryland state police are conducting an investigation into who initiated the picture of troopers posing with 2 chainz. He was gracious enough to pose with the troopers who busted him. You can see the pink there with the frozen precipitation. Were going to have this portion of the system the front and the low moving close to the coastline. It intensifies as it gets there. As it does, it starts to pull in the colder air, kicks back moisture from the ocean. That will bring us a chance for showers and snow showers this afternoon. It does start to move away. The High Pressure butts up against the low. We get the wind. The pressure between the two systems. A wind chill in the 20s. A cold day, but we get the sun back. We will start to dry out. So, hopefully, one of these three subjects will encourage young people to try Something Different or consider a different type of career path for themselves. You are saying everything on this particular piece was created by an africanamerican inventor. I. Were looking at very common things. How do you think that we just dont know this . Well, i think a lot of it is because it is kind of obscure information. And it is, it is along the lines of like a scholarly type thing. A lot of scholars study this stuff. Mary bubala explains how one raven fan used social media to contact the owner of a camera he found at the superdome. Reporter as ravens fans went wild inside of the superdome. Been saw something on the ground . I found this camera laying behind me. He picked it up, his friends said turn it in. You think that they will take the effort to find it. I said i have a better chance of finding them. When bill got back to his home he took the memory card out and posted pictures on facebook. It turns out the cameras belongs to a ravens fan and the photos were shared more than 5,000 fines. Facebook is blowing up with people saying i know this person. I will get in touch with them.
