Hi youre watching love of quilting. This is the 2100 series. Im mary fons and im here with eric drexler. Welcome back to the show. Its a pleasure to be here. I am so glad youre here because one of the first times i ever hosted the show without my mom was with you. It was so great. You were a great guest, and you helped me be at ease at a new job. Im happy to have you back. Everything flowed very smoothly. It took all the tension away from me this time too. Tension funny you say that because were talking about tension today. Were talking about machine quilting. You have great content to share with us today. Where do we start . As i teach around the country to some of the quilt guilds, ive noticed a lot of quilters are not necessarily quilting, theyre piecing. They do their tops but they send it off to a longarm person. Which is okay. Thats fine too. I love the longarm people. But Small Projects like table runners, vests, purses you dont necessarily need to send to a longarm person. We can do that on our home machines. Today were talking about different types of threads we can put in there to do our embellishing and make things look 3dimensional and make them pop. When youre doing machine quilting the little bit that ive done and i wanted to say that i really have a yen to do more machine quilting at home. It is difficult on really big quilts to get those done on your home machine, but you can. When you know about thread weights and tension and different options you have, you can do anything. Once you have the knowledge you want to try new things and think outside that thread box of what we normally do every time. Outside that bobbin case. Its okay to play with tensions. Thats really what we try to teach you. Its okay to experiment and play with the tensions to get the best results definitely. So take it away. What have you got here . I brought a printed fabric that we want to really make the print pop out at us. There are several ways to do that. This is a 30weight thread so its a very lightweight or mediumweight thread. Its what were normally used to sewing with. I chose blue for the blue flowers and the purple for the purple flowers. One quick question before you go on, can you just say in one sentence or less when you talk to me about weight of thread i dont know that everybody is going to know exactly we could talk for hours about thread. Briefly, thread the memory jogger i like to give people is thread is exactly opposite in sizes that needles are. Needles go 9, 11, 14, 16, as they get thicker. Thread is up 12 weight, 30 weight, 40 weight, 60 weight. They get thinner as that thread gets to a higher number. Thinner and finer. Thinner and finer. The general weight people like to sew with is a 30weight thread. Where a 12weight would be a heavier weight and 60weight would be a lighter weight thread. And 12 is what you used on this first example. This is 30 weight this is your regular you barely need to adjust tensions. I like to use a 90 14 topstitch metallic needle because that fits a lot of different types of threads. I can go from one thread to the next. Thirty weight we dont have to hardly do any tension adjustment at all on the machine. Where on a 12 weight, the next one we have here put this aside here. The 12 weight i like a lot too because that actually covers up the lines. Its a little more forgiving if im not staying on the line; it covers a little bit more area. As we talked about the weights getting in different sizes, a 12weight is a third thicker than a 30weight thread; 30weight is a third thicker than a 40weight; 40weight is a third thicker than so its about a third general terms. When i look at this example as compared to the other one you can see the stitches from standing far, far away. The individual stitches. Its really beautiful. I dont want to say that its a homespun look. Im not sure thats exactly what i mean to say. Its certainly rougher in a good way. Youre seeing the stitches and using variegated thread. Its almost like a handsewing thread. Not homespun. You knew where i was going. This is a colored blending thread. This thread actually changes colors randomly every 2 1 2 to 5 inches. Instead of getting 4 inches 4 inches, 4 inches, and getting a very predictable color change, these are randomly broken up. We have many different shades around the entire flower. In any case, we have three more examples of this and were going to do some machine quilting shortly. But in any case youre enhancing the pattern. This is what youve chosen to do with this particular fabric; youre enhancing every petal that you machine quilt around or its helping that petal raise slightly. The batting underneath is getting tamped down by your thread. Its getting sewn down. It automatically pops out everything else. So machine quilters who are very talented like yourself and so many people who do this just get better and better at bringing out the pieces of the fabric the elements of the fabric they want to showcase. It takes practice. It does. Theres about 2 percent that get it right off the bat and the rest of us have to practice and play and fail. Look at somebody elses work too. I look at the professional quilters in the quilt shows and study them with a magnifying glass because i want to see what the judges are looking for. Not that im being judged, but thats how you improve. How about a little demo. Yeah, we are going to do a demo next. I got a sidetracked. Youre such an expert. You really are. Ive got a quilt sandwich already prepared. Well tell you how to do the preparation at the tip part at the end if we have some time. Im going to go around one of these flowers i have something the camera can see. What i like to do is some of the smaller portions like this tiny flower on the side, this little petal on the side first because then when i come back across the larger one, i can actually cover up that start and stop point. So the fewer starts and stops you have the fewer overlaps on lines you have the better off you are also. I know youre not supposed to turn the handle wheel, but on my older machine sometimes i have to turn that hand wheel. On the newer machines push needle down, needle up. That brings that bobbin thread to the surface. I always like to do that because i dont have that bobbin thread trailing underneath where i have to go pull it out of all the stitches that i just did. I tuck that thread underneath and sew around the outside. The most important thing i think is to lock yourself down. I sew with my fingertips and try to hold my hands down so im only moving my fingertips. Instead of hovering like this you get very sore shoulders and you dont get a very good stitch. You get floating stitches that sometimes jerk and move around. Some machine quilters like those gloves. I have a pair of those gloves i used when i did a set of placements. I have to say id need to do more with them and without them. They give you a lot better grip. They swear by them. They have rubber fingertips and help you grip the fabric that youre working with. In this case i can just continue on from one petal right over to the next petal and just stay on those lines and go all the way out and around that entire leaf. Can you tell me about the foot you have on . The foot is a freemotion foot. Obviously ive got the feed dogs dropped because its not pulling the fabric through. Its free and im moving the fabric. The foot hops up and down as the needle moves up. The foot lifts up and i can move the fabric now. It holds the fabric down. When the needle goes into the material that foot goes down and holds the material in place. It holds it and lifts it up. Its a wonderful foot and its also open in the front so you can actually see where youre going. A lot of these projects you cant see where youre going because that foot is so closed up. It may be an optional foot in some machines. I dont have to turn the material at all because were just doing straight stitch. I can keep that material going straight. In your imagination you have to think you have your whole quilt rolled up here. You cant just go spin it around in circles. We need to only have this going in one direction. You do make it look really easy, eric. I dont know if my petal would look so nice. Maybe an afternoon together maybe an afternoon and i could get better. It takes practice to see where that needle is going to be. I wanted to show you we were talking about the different types of needles to use for different weights. The 30weight thread, we dont need a special needle. I usually use that 9014 like i was telling you about. Heres our regular strand of thread. For our big needle, i have a big strand of thread. The groove is in the front of the needle. That groove is where the thread lays when it goes into the fabric. After the needle eye goes in there the thread nestles very nicely and flat inside that needle. That trough, yeah. So it goes through here and goes through very smoothly. Theres no resistance at all on that needle. Thats what were looking for. When we pushed that thread up in there you cant see it because we dont want to braid the thread as its going through there. That will cause thread breakage. And it will probably create lint and things in your machine. This is a standard needle. If we go to put a very thick thread in here, the thick thread has a lot of resistance going through the eye of the needle. Im actually pulling it away when i pull it through. Also when i go to that groove you can see on the side its sticking way out around the outside of the groove. So thats going to rub on the fabric going through there. So the 90 14, either a topstitch metallic quilting, or embroidery needle, this eye of the needle is very much elongated and the groove in the needle is deeper and more recessed to accept that thick of a thread like jeans thread and things like that. This is such a wonderful tool because that helps illustrate what youre talking about. I can see if the trough in your needle isnt wide enough to allow for the thickness of your thread, it could weaken your thread because its going to be rubbing on that. Friction is heat. When youre using some metallics the heat on a needle is bad for the metallics. Lets talk about these threads. Well talk about metallics in particular. We were talking about the thick thread. Ive got the 30weight on here. This is a 12weight thread so its a much heavier thread a very smart consumer told me one time because she uses the same color on the bottom as she does on the top, she uses the orange as a color thats the sun she uses on top. Theres a brown label which ive got on the machine. The brown labeled one is the 30weight is the ground. So orange in the sky, brown on the ground. We changed tensions with the 12weight thread because it is a heavier thread. Heavier threads increase tension so we need to loosen up the top tension a little. If you put this on the bobbin people dont like to mess with that bobbin tension at all. They steer away from that. I would also like to point out that we have a chart. You brought a chart that were going to put on the web at fonsandporter. Com if you go to the tv section. You can look at this chart and what information is there. The recommendations the tension everything is on that one chart for each individual thread that were talking about. I want to say really quick for those who are watching and saying, ah, tension the whole big issue. Just as an interjection were talking about machine quilting here. If youre a piecer or if youre piecing in your life most of the time you do not need to be messing with your tension from day to day. If your machine something funky is happening and youre getting thread goobers and your bobbin is all weird sometimes beginners especially will be like, oh, my tension is off so theyll start fiddling with the tension. That is maybe not the first thing you want to try. Ive learned that if youre piecing were talking about piecing, just rethread. Take your thread out, take your bobbin out maybe wind a new bobbin and just rethread and 99 percent of the time, thats the issue. If youve just tuned in halfway into the program when were talking about tension today were talking about tension as it applies to machine quilting. So just make that distinction for all those folks out there. Thats always the case. Im a sewing machine mechanic and i see that all the time. I thread it up and i dont have the same issues and problems theyre complaining about because it was threaded properly this time. Check out the chart online. That will be great. The holographic type thread that we had on here, thats all throughout this whole piece. Ive got another piece that has a little hint in there but this is a flat thread. So with a flat thread it acts differently than a round type metallic thread. This is a tacky example but i have to show you because its a great example. This is funny. No, no, its funny but its a great way to illustrate this point. It will be something you remember forever. Instead of putting your thread on the machine horizontally if we were to do that and pull this thread off its going to curl and twist and kink as you pull it off the spool. We need to make sure it is standing straight up on the machine because as we pull this thread, it will stay flat going through the tensions and thread guides on your machine. So this is the wrong way because of it pulls off funky. It will curl a hundred times before it gets to the needle and then that curl and kink will be a thread break. So when its standing like this, it pulls off real easy. Thats for all flat threads . The holographic is the only one we have thats a flat thread. Everything else is a round of thread with an aluminum wrapper on the outside. It is a very thin thread. Most people think they can leave their tensions alone because of the thin thread, but its made out of a mylar or a plastic so it drags going through the tension discs. Thats these guys here. On some machines ive had to turn the tension down as low as one. There are two types of sewers, those who test and those who really wish they did test. You dont want to put your new thread on a project that youre working on and give you constant problems. Work on a sandwich on the side you can practice and play with. Look at the back and see if the tension is adjusted right. You just have to do that before you dive into your beautiful thing that youre ready to machine quilt. This is really beautiful thread. When it lays down it lays flat, so you get a hundred percent of the light mirroring back. It looks like rhinestones all over it. It does look like swarovski crystals or it looks like morning dew on these flowers. Thats what i think. I love using it for water or cloud linings. Anywhere there is water it gives movement to the whole piece. I bet art quilters really like this. Oh, yes. Thats the holographic. The next one we have is all the polyester thread. This is the 60weight thread. Ill bring in a little piece of this. You can see how these veins inside the flowers really are much more enhanced when i actually sew those, but it might be too thick of a thread to actually sew with the 30weight or the 12weight. The 60 stays fine and doesnt overwhelm the pattern like that. Its also done in the negative parts of the design with the little micro stippling. The micro stippling like you were saying before bringing the flowers out and enhancing it. If you flatten down all of this back here, it really makes the flowers pop. You would say this is heavily quilted. Yes. Lots of time on this one, where these really quick just to outline a flower. On my sewing machine at home, i have a stippling setting that just kind of does it for me. You could freemotion stipple too. Thats cheating. Thats cheating. Using the setting is cheating. I might have to cheat at the beginning. You free motioned all of the stippling. You have a little surprise in here. I like to sign my work. So if you signed it in the stippling its another point for somebody to look at. So way in the corner down there, i always put my name into the stippling. You dont see it unless you stare at it. If youre good at your script writing, Cursive Writing you can slide bible verses or little i love yous. All sorts of little poems and things you can put in. Its like the quilt has a secret. I always have a little secret in the quilting. Lets put that one away. This one was a little bit of everything. Because i travel a lot, this would be a great sample to pass around and say this has 30 weight and 12 weight and holographic threads. The holographic i did the little dots on the ends of it just to give it a pop and not overwhelming. The 60 weight was all the stippling stitches in the negative. The light blue flowers are all the lighter threads the 30 weight. The 12 weight i did on all the purple flowers. So right next to each other you can see one thread being heavier than another thread. I think thats what youll get better at as time goes on too as youre doing this is you might use four different threads in your quilt top when youre quilting it because you have so much knowledge. Eventually you get so much knowledge about what you want design wise its just another design element to it. It gives a lot of dimension to it. You get foreground and background that way too. The negative looks like the background these are jumping out into the foreground. There was one tip i would love you to share about how you can when youre not behind the sewing machine, get better and better at thinking like a machine quilter. Can you share that . I always have a pad of paper and a pen next to me. So sitting in the Doctors Office just bored stiff waiting for the doctor, ill take that pen and start doodling around and making my little puzzle pieces. A little cactus making my name, trying not to do the exact same pattern, because the more broken up and fragmented it is, the better your stippling looks. Its not a constant pattern the entire time. Youre just doodling with thread when youre doing that. Its like thread painting. It is. Tell me about this guide that you made. Its really cool to see the colors on the quilt but to really show thickness differences its nice to have one on a black and a white. The holographic was the one on the top. On the white it barely shows but on the black it jumps out. The 12 weight is the thicker of the two cotton threads. Its the same color but just a much heavier thread a third thicker thread. Then the polyester was the one i did on the reverse or the negative parts of the quilt. This is wonderful. I think its beautiful to look at even. For some reason it seems like something to put on your wall and people would wonder if it was art on the wall. Its this guide for you to always reference how does this look and how do i know. You could do it at the beginning of your project. Take a look at it and throughout your project to see where do i want to go next with this piece. Its a good tool to have around to say what do i want the background to look like; do i want it thin like this a thin thread or thicker thread . If you have a sample like this, you can always pull it out and get an idea what it looks like. We have a couple more examples we want to look at before our time is done. Tell me about these vests. The green vest has the negative parts of the print embellished so that the leaves really pop out at you. The leaves are outlined but the negative parts make the leaves jump out a lot more. Thats that color blending thread i was telling you about. The next one to the right the leaves have a copper colored holographic thread around the outside of the leaves. That mirrors that light back so nicely and makes it sparkle. When youre walking is just sparkling. Thats officially a fancy vest. And purses are very popular so you can embellish your purse fabric before you make a purse too. On the sea life quilt every fish and coral piece and the turtles are all outlined in the different color of the holographic thread. That gives depth and dimension because it makes them pop out and it gives that glimmering sea life look because its under water and the light is coming through the water. That made it jump out. The last example we have is this pillow. What seems to be true about all of these different threads you brought to us to show they really in nature you have light is shining on water. Light is shining on fish. In flowers you have different pieces fuller than others. You get to make that part of your project when you know how to machine quilt it in certain ways. Its pretty awesome. You can echo the beauty of nature in your project. It makes you look at fabric differently. You look at it like what it could be when i get done playing with it and putting thread into it. Its not just the pattern anymore. Tell me a little bit about this pillow. This was the 30 weight that was all over the flowers. I didnt do any 12 weight on this one. This was all 30 weight on the flowers and the negative in reverse. I slipped my name in there but i wont tell you where. Ill find it. You can find it later. Ill tell you a little about the edging too. Id like to ask you to stick around for tips. You can tell us about this ruched edging. That would be great. Before you go youve got to look at this. I hope the cameras can pick that up. What does that say . Live, love, and be hippie. Good advice. Thanks so much, eric. My pleasure. Thank you. Grab a pencil. Tips and other useful information coming up next. Eric, you have a great tip for keeping your quilt sandwiched together without any pins. Take me through it. When im sewing i dont want to have to pull out a pin before i get to that spot and slow the machine down. I want to keep roaring through the whole thing. Some of the smaller projects like placemats, table covers small wall hangings not necessarily a large quilt i pin those. I like to use a temporary spray adhesive. This goes away in 710 days all by itself, if you hit it with a hot iron, it dissipates quickly. Thats why they call it temporary. You can stick things down and peel them back up. One of these sides i had already released. I pull that back. I make my sandwich first with the back, batting, and top so that i have everything all lined up and perfect. I spray the side with the material, not the batting. If you spray the batting side it tends to fall down inside the valleys and sit up on top of the hills. I think that is a very interesting tip. I did not know that. Always spray the less porous of the two pieces of material. So i spray that side and lay this down and smooth it out. If ive got wrinkles, i need to pull that back up and smooth that wrinkle out. Ill pull the other piece in, spray that side, and the same thing for the reverse. My basting pins are going to feel so neglected. Thats great stuff. It really is. Its ozone friendly and doesnt have any things that eat the atmosphere up. Thats why its green. Thats a great tip. Then we talked about we showed this awesome pillow on the show. I want to give you those so you can talk about the ruched piping its not piping. Cording. Ruched cording. It just gives another accent to it. I use the same material that was on the outside which also looks completely different when its all bunched up. Basically its just taking a strip of fabric and it depends on the cording thickness you have as far as how much fabric that you need to sandwich together. Two ways to do it. You can sew this first and pull your cord through later with a turning tool or put your cord in there and sew it at the same time. This gets laid up on the side after you bunched everything up and sewn between your two layers and turn the quilt inside out. So as you bunch that up, you have different looks. You can have that really light or you can have it really super bunched up. This takes about four times more material than you think it does because youre bunching it together. Those are great tips. Nature, in all her glorious splendor, beckons us to admire her magnificent beauty and explore her graceful solitude. Planet earths colorful and energetic beauty imbues the senses with awe and intertwines with our imaginations to become a personal invitation for health and healing. In accepting this invitation, we journey further on our own path of wholeness and by doing so, we strive not only for balance, but we also celebrate both our oneness with nature and the heartfelt happiness brought about by this reunion. To see a hummingbird suspending in mid air flashing its mating colors or to watch a falling star in the clear evening sky this is to know and realize your connection to the Natural World. Given the chance, nature transcends all stress. Through such enchanted alchemy as earths snowcapped Mountain Peaks, glacial waterfalls, primeval Emerald Forests and precious wildlife, nature holds the power to take ones breath away yet at the same time she magically breathes life into us, stirring the soul at the most profound level. Effortlessly, planet earth both inspires and invigorates the human spirit to the core of our very soul and in that moment of stillness, she offers a renewal to the sense of wonder and purpose in our lives. For this reason, nature, over the eons of time, has held a special place in the hearts of humanity as one of the greatest healing forces, providing a sanctuary to evaluate the deepseated issues which often trouble mind, body and spirit. For many people, the healing power of nature is a return to simplicity. Embracing a Sustainable Way of life, honoring the balance of nature and our place in it. In these difficult times of personal strife and planetary concerns, this earthly wisdom often bears repeating balance, simplicity and patience. [ scratching ] from the dynamic shear walls of the matterhorn in the swiss alps to the stunning peak of mt. Cook on new zealands south island, and the magnificent teton range of wyoming. For generations, mountains have captivated the imaginations of mankind the world over in poetry and song. Tributes to beauty, refuge and the divine. Sages remind us that this is humanitys attempt to honor and reconnect with the dynamic places we long to call home. Reaching toward the azure heavens, these snowcapped peaks are said to reflect a mirror image of the human mind. A metaphor common to nearly every culture on the planet even those whose geography offers little in the way of what might be considered a dynamic landscape. Moreover, the views from both valley floor and mountain summit offer remarkable perspectives, that together, combine to nurture a fuller understanding of our place and purpose in the Natural World. Mountains, we are reminded by sages and mystics, offer a profound metaphor of the human journey. What renowned mythologist Joseph Campbell referred to as the call to adventure. An undeniable lure to embark on a journey of spiritual exaltations, personal challenges, and victories of the heart. In doing so, we know full well that the ultimate physical as well as symbolic goal is to stand at the summit to behold an unparalleled perspective, thus claiming a personal mastery of each arduous ascent. These mighty fortresses of quartz and granite are uniquely an inherent, spiritual archetype of vigor and fortitude. For millennia, people the world over have regarded mountains as symbols of strength, stability, courage, sublime beauty and even curiosity. Mountain cathedrals, it is often said, have the remarkable ability to forge dreams, inspire our greatest Human Potential and to invite profound selfreflection. Moreover, they humble us with their grand stature. For this reason, many believe that mountains hold a unique purity, both in their visual beauty and in a less tangible but very real Sacred Energy that emanates from base to summit. And when a nexus of mountains and waters occurs, this beauty and energy is indescribable. Mountains, whatever their size, have the ability to place any of lifes difficulties in correct proportion to the Bigger Picture of life. Perhaps this is the greatest healing quality of mountains. These thoughts are conveyed most poignantly in the words of poet nancy wood my help is in the mountain, where i take myself to heal the earthly wounds that people give to me. I find a rock with sun on it, and a stream where the water runs gentle and the trees which, one by one, give me company. So i must stay for a long time, until i have grown from the rock, and the stream is running through me and i cannot tell myself from one tall tree. Then i know that nothing touches me nor makes me run away. My help is in the mountain, that i take away with me. Mountains are indeed a dynamic visual force of nature, yet they offer only a piece of the earths healing mandala. Water and ice that, over time, carve the chiseled mountain faces eventually pool at their feet offering the balance of this healing dynamic. Of all the earths features, it is her bodies of water from healing mineral baths and thermal pools to tropical equatorial oceans that many people find serene and relaxing. Like mountains, water in all its many forms, serves as a powerful metaphor for tranquility. Peaceful rivers that allow the mind to wander, calm lakes that reflect the deepseated wisdom of the unconscious mind [ ocean sounds ] and mighty oceans that stir the imagination with adventure and curiosity. A grandeur that reminds us of both our frailty and our highest potential. Perhaps because we spend the first nine months of our lives in water, we have an inherent calling to periodically return to this element as a source of nurturing, cleansing and inspiration. Water, it is said, is the essential element of life. More than just a means of quenching our physical thirst, water holds the power, both as a symbol and metaphor, of quenching a spiritual longing to reunite with the divine, however we choose to perceive this. Its no secret that one appeal of water, earths unique transformative element, is its capacity to both hold and mirror many earthly colors from the aqua blue hues of the Caribbean Sea to the crimson reflections of sunlight at dawn to the cerulean blue Glacial Lakes to the reflected colors of fall foliage and all the hues in between. Colors that mirror the rainbow of human thoughts and feelings. In all its many forms from moist clouds that parade over verdant hilltops to the polar ice that holds so many of earths secrets over the millennia of her history, water is a beauty to behold. No less beautiful are the cascades of water over emerald lands that, unfettered by gravity, fall forcibly to the ground giving off unending showers of gentle mist. Snowflakes. Raindrops. Streams and creeks that meander over the earths plains and supply volumes of water to the mighty rivers. Rivers that, in turn, feed the worlds massive oceans that ultimately surrender to the earths atmosphere her moisture thus giving back to the skies the dew and rain that once again fall to earth. Its a timeless process of giving and receiving. One of the many cycles of nature that replenishes human life. [ whale sounds ] [ seagulls ] michael york indeed, water serves as a powerful metaphor for life, best described this way by lao tzu, the father of the taoist philosophy. The highest good is like water. Water gives life to 10000 things with little effort. It flows in low planes not preferred by most and so is like the tao. In dwelling, be close to the land, in meditation go deep into the heart [ ducks honking ] in conflict, be fair and gentle. In speech, be honest with thoughts and feelings. In governing, honor justice and freedom. [ splash ] in business, be competent and do what you enjoy. In family affairs, always be present. When you are content to be simply yourself and dont compare yourself to others you will gain respect. Be gentle, like water. All nature is sacred, yet in our minds and hearts some locations, above all others, extol the epitome of sacredness, some with features of human adornment like the Grand Mountain cathedrals that stand guard at the edges of the planets tectonic plates, certain places on the earth, often noted at the confluence of waters, are believed to hold an unparalleled energy of holiness and like mountains, the vitality of water, in all its many forms continually serves as an inspiration for minds to wander freely, to give thanks and renew the spirit, as expressed in the words of this poetic passage the voices of Healing Waters are many. The streams echo to the rising cliffs she once trespassed, her waves sing a constant refrain to the beaches, her moist clouds whisper incessantly to the trees and mountains, soon cascading white ribbons resound with misty rainbows there is music in all of these songs and this music dampens my dry heart like a spring rain. Yet the song i like best is the silent melody of gentle falling snow. Sometimes her voice is a thunderous roar that begs for my attention, but mostly waters song is a celebration of life and i celebrate with it. I long to hear the voices of water as i dangle my feet in a cool lake, or wade in the shallow ocean surf, or drink from a Cold Mountain stream. The voices of Healing Waters are many and i sing with them. As a keen observer of his environment, philosopher lao tzu saw how divergent aspects of nature, like mountainand water come together to form a harmony of wholeness. One of the most notable sayings attributed to him reads stand like mountain, flow like water. To stand like mountain means to be strong, secure and stable in your personal environment through dramatic changes. To flow like water reminds us to move with, rather than against, the flow of those things we cannot change nor have the power to control. [ bird sounds ] the advice, stand like mountain flow like water is a gentle yet very powerful reminder to seek and maintain a sense of harmony within ourselves and the environment. A harmony that unites mind, body and spirit. If you were to ask any person what they like best about nature, you might hear one word repeated often in these conversations solitude. A respite for the soul. Retreating to a deserted beach, walking silently through a cathedral forest, or standing alone at a cascading waterfall are moments we long to experience, even cherish during hectic times of strife and personal difficulty. Time spent alone in nature allows us precious moments to pause and reflect on our lives, especially the resolution of issues and the direction we must next take on our own human journey. Mystics and sages speak of these moments [ guitar solo ] of solitude as a time to center. A time to enter the heart. They remind us that in the quest to achieve the balance of life, inner reflection is as important as the external quest for happiness. To be alone in ture, embraced in seclusion among trees, breathing to the rhythm of the ocean waves, sitting quietly in the presence of abundant wildlife, one begins to realize that through natures healing wisdom, we are never truly alone, as reflected in these words of lord byron to sit on rocks, to muse oer flood and fell, to slowly trace the forests shady scene, where things that own not mans dominion dwell, and mortal foot hath neer or rarely been. To climb the trackless mountain all unseen, with the wild flock that never needs a fold. Alone oer steeps and foaming falls to lean. This is not solitude, tis but to hold converse with natures charms, and view her stores unrolled. There are those, of course, who enter natures domain purposely to leave behind, if only momentarily, the world of man and all of its concerns and issues. These thoughts are conveyed so eloquently in this timeless poem by the revered chinese poet li po. You ask why i perch on a jade Green Mountain . I laugh but say nothing. My heart free like a peach blossom, in the flowering stream, going by, in the depths, in another world, not among men. [ birds chirping ] nature, in all her seasons, elements and breathtaking landscapes, reminds us that there is something greater than ourselves out there, yet something we are very much a part of and connected to. Perhaps this is this reason why in times of stress when we feel disconnected, we find ourselves returning to nature her beaches, her forests, her mountains and streams. For millennia, nature has served as both a respite from daily cares and worries as well as a constant reminder to seek a balance in our lives and restore wholeness. In this time of perilous social and ecological imbalance, it is a lesson we must remind ourselves of daily. The indigenous cultures have held this wisdom deep in their hearts for millennia, just as they have known that the embrace of nature lifts the spirits. Their voices share this wisdom in words such as these when the wind blows, this is my medicine. When the sky rains, this is my medicine. When the heavens are filled with snow, this is my medicine. When the skies become clear after a storm, this is my medicine. Natures ability to heal is both simple and dynamic. Her means are both obvious and subtle. Some describe the healing power of nature as an energy or vibration. A song that not only seduces the senses, but sings to every cell in our body. Indeed, planet earth has a vibration, a resonance, now quantified through the field of physics, as the schumann resonance, but known long ago as the music of the spheres. Science has now begun to understand that all parts of nature participate in this chorus of music. The leaves of trees, the cascading motion of waterfalls, even the chorus of whale songs are part of this earthly symphony. The songs of planet earth are many and can be heard each and every day when we take the time to listen. Her repertoire is a harmony of melodic themes and gentle rhythms that give rapture to the heart and unite mind, body and spirit. These are the melodies sung by the voice of Mother Nature. These are the simple melodies known the world over as earth songs. To sit or stand in the presence of natures splendor, one cannot help but acknowledge and appreciate the Creative Forces that coalesced to produce such pristine beauty. [ hummingbirds sounds ] to watch the rapid beat of the hummingbirds wings as it hovers over a flower to drink its nectar. To turn around and find yourself standing in the presence of a bobcat. To see a bear stand up on its hind legs gazing at a field of dandelions. These are moments where nature, in an instant of spiritual connection, takes our breath away. For many people these encounters become a mystical experience. Elders from the indigenous tribes have an expression for this. They say, we have walked together in the shadow of the rainbow. Indeed, these are spiritual moments and nature is filled with them. Throughout the many cultures and geographic climates around the globe, the words wind, breath and spirit are synonymous. These currents of gentle winds are more than mere metaphors for inspiration. They are the very air we breathe. These winds not only help sustain life, they capture our imagination and stir the soul to a new level of appreciation for the beauty of creation itself. One can marvel at any of planet earths remarkable landscapes, yet the realization of beauty is enhanced when it is shared. Its heartwarming to observe a florida manatee, the alpenglow of a Mountain Peak or a pastel sunset and hear the gasps of joy, often followed by reverent silence expressed by those who experience and connect with this moment of beauty for the first time. Its not uncommon to stand at the foot of earths most majestic peaks and feel humbled by the immensity of the Creative Forces that formed these landscapes. This is the philosophy of the native cultures and is perhaps an inherent wisdom that echoes in our very souls at the moment of awareness of this divine symbiotic relationship to the planet. Where i stand is holy, holy is the ground, forest, river, mountain, ocean listen to the sacred sound oh great spirit, circle all around me. The brilliant colors of flowering fields. The artistic intricacies of colorful butterfly wings. The Emerald Forest valleys carved by wind and rain over eons of time all serve as reminders of natures hand as a creative artist. [ upbeat music ] in our busy, if not hectic, stressfilled world, our connection to nature has weakened considerably. As predicted many decades ago, technology has created a wedge, if not an abyss, between ourselves and the Natural World weakening an essential bond to our own livelihood. Some are now calling this a nature deficit disorder. Yet, we can neither deny nor escape our direct link to the Natural World. Today there is great concern for the health of the planet, and for good reason. The earths health is directly tied to our own. This was most eloquently stated in the words written by Elizabeth Roberts in her bestselling book earth prayers during this time of great imbalance on planet earth, we may feel ourselves torn between the priorities of healing ourselves, resolving our own inner spiritual or psychological problems and attempting to cure the social and economic ills that beset our culture. While each of us undoubtedly has much inner work to do, his attitude misses the main point. It continues to view the individual as somehow separate from the rest of the world. But if we accept that we are totally part of this living earth, then we must recognize that isolated health is an illusion. Healing ourselves and working to resolve the contradictions in the human earth ecology is the same work. At a time when the awareness of Environmental Concerns grows daily, being green means more than recycling paper and plastic, conserving energy, and decreasing your carbon footprint. It means honoring with gratitude the earths natural wonders, big and small, every day. It means celebrating the winds the tides, the solstice and equinox, the change of seasons. Being green means respecting, renewing and cultivating your relationship with Mother Nature on a daily basis so that these earth songs never become silent, nor forgotten. Naturalist m. Slim hooey penned these words as a reminder for all of earths inhabitants i have come to terms with the future. From this day onward, i will walk easy on the earth. Plant trees. Kill no living things. Live in harny with all creatures. I will restore the earth where i am. Use no more of its resources than i need. And listen, listen to what it is telling me. So step outside tonight to observe the milky way. Study the ocean tides. Memorize the woodpeckers call and address the trees and flowers by their names. Inner peace abounds in nature. Allow it to abound in you as well. Make a habit to surround yourself in nature regularly, forhe times when you ignore her, is when you need this tranquility the most. And the next time you find yourself called deep into the great outdoors, pause for a moment and listen closely to the earth songs. Its essence, like the air we breathe, circulates in an undeniable movement, the splendid symphony of life. If so inclined, join in the chorus of silent praise. And whether you sing along, silently hum, or simply smile in recognition of these melodies, may the songs of the earth echo in your heart always. Mother earth eagerly awaits your return home. What a beautiful film and what a powerful reminder of how nature can restore both body and spirit. Press through the heel. Arthritis is a big problem. Bring the arms to the sides of the chair. The statistics are pretty grim. One in three adults has arthritis, or is going to have to deal with that. And thats amazing. I had been dealing with a painful illness that was affecting my hands and my feet. Yoga really is a huge part of my life, and i know that it repaired things that doctors told me would not. Could not be repaired. I think without yoga i would not have gotten out of that pain. Im loaded with arthritis i think if i wasnt doing yoga i would probably not be getting around like i do. Ive had a really happy life and busy life. Im in such good shape. And i all give it to yoga. No aches and pains. I wake up in the morning, do my exercises in bed, then i get up and start my day and feel good. And not many people my age always do that. Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in adults. Movement is one of the best remedies for bringing about greater ease and relief from suffering. One of the things thats remarkable is the yoga poses help bring increased circulation to the joints. And thats very important. Its kind of like the motor oil for the body. When i started having some issues with my knee, i had to give up things like pickup games of basketball, tennis, things like that. But now ive been able to still consider. Pursue golf, hiking, walking, things of that nature. So through yoga, its helped restore some of my lifes activities that i used to enjoy before. I think yoga has kept me more limber. It helps me with balance, which is an issue for me. Ive got some knees that wish i hadnt tried running for a couple of years, jogging. I have a slight neck problem from a car accident. I have a lower back problem. You collect these things over time. But i think yoga makes it much easier to live with. People find that they have in a very short time more ease in themselves. They feel more comfortable in this body that we dwell in. Dont wait. Do it now. Youre never too old. Yoga is a series of practices, but its also a philosophy that originated in india thousands of years ago. In fact, yoga encompasses all of ones being, all the dimensions physical, mental, and emotional, as well as spiritual. Yoga, through stretches in the poses, helps not only stretch out tight places in the body tight muscles, but also strengthens weak muscles. And thats particularly important for people with arthritis, people that have become stiff with inactivity or through age as the body has stiffened and theres less flexibility. Ive designed easy yoga for arthritis not only to address arthritis issues, but all joints which have stiffened with age or become less mobile from injury or inactivity. Yoga can make a huge difference in the condition of your body and the quality of your life. Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in adults. One in three people are going to feel the affects of arthritis. Movement is one of the best remedies for bringing about greater ease and relief from suffering. It used to be that arthritis sufferers were told to rest, but now we know that exercise is the most important thing that an arthritis sufferer can do. And it must be an exercise that is gentle and kind to the joint. And thats why yoga is so very valuable. I found yoga through peggy cappy. I had been dealing with a painful illness that was affecting my hands and my feet and i became. Over a length of four years i became quite immobile, and could not hold utensils. And it was painful. Paula is a yoga student of mine, and now a yoga teacher herself. She came to class only three years ago, but when she arrived, she was at the end of her rope both physically and mentally. She had a lot of suffering, and she didnt know what to do. I had a great deal of pain that would radiate from. Just from inside the bones, it felt like, from the fingertips all the way up to the shoulders, and from the feet, sometimes up to the knees, and occasionally up to the hips. After four years of this, i really had gone deep within myself to kind of cushion myself from the pain. I think thats how i dealt with it. Barbara has been one of my most loyal and regular students. And you know why . Barbara has had arthritis in just about every joint of her body. And she knows that if she stops moving, shes just going to really feel the effects of that arthritis. But by coming to class week after week, month after month, year after year, she maintains an ease in motion, she maintains a vitality with her life. Im loaded with arthritis and if you dont keep your joints and your muscles moving youre going to get stiffer and stiffer. With the knee, the first knee and then the second knee a year later, i knew it was time, because i could barely walk down one step before the pain was so excruciating from bone rubbing against bone. Many problems that are attributed to arthritis are the result of inactivity, of not moving. Because what happens is when you hurt, you move less. But as you move less, the joint stiffens, and so that causes you to move even less. And so theres a whole cycle buildup, of inactivity. I think if i wasnt doing yoga, i would probably not be getting around like i do. Its made me more flexible, more able to do everything i want to do. I know that immobility in a joint is a very bad thing. If you stop moving the joint completely, the joint actually degenerates. And i know this all too well in my own family. My father suffered an accident during surgery that left him in a coma for months following the surgery. Because he wasnt expected to live, he just lay there. But he came back from that surgery, he gained full consciousness, full mental faculties. But then he was left with a body that could not move. He literally could not move his body. The joints froze. So i know all too well the quality of his life was significantly affected simply by letting his joints lie there and not move. Bob is a remarkable athlete. In his younger days he played football, he played basketball he was very, very active. But as a result of an injury that he suffered in football, he began to have a lot of problems with his knee. They did surgery, removed all the cartilage from his knee. But what happened is that he began to really suffer the problems of arthritis as a result of the trauma that his joints experienced. When i was a sophomore in high school, i was playing football, and i hurt my knee pretty severely. He was the quarterback, and a game, he was tackled. And his cleat caught in one direction, he was pulled in the other, and his knee was blown out. About 12 or 15 years later i started experiencing some pretty good pain in my left knee. At that point i went to an orthopedic surgeon, he took some xrays, he said, yes, you have osteoarthritis, and that, really i cant do anything with you at this point. Maybe if you can wait another 15, 20 years, we can look at doing something. Well, in a 16yearold with no cartilage, bad things are going to happen, and that came to pass. Begin to stretch through your limbs. And when youre ready you can draw your knees into the chest. When bob was about 40, he was suddenly, fairly suddenly, incapacitated, and could no longer walk. He also drives in the car a lot, and his back was also out at that same time. Bob was in great pain. His knee was hot to the touch. It was red, and he was. He almost had to crawl sometimes to get to bed. Working was almost impossible, because he drives in a car. And hed reached a point of just desperate. I dont want to say desperation, but he was in great physical and emotional pain. Bob feels that yoga not only has benefited his joints, but also in the joint that he severely injured, he had muscle atrophy. And whats remarkable is hes been able to develop his muscles, increase not only the strength but the mass of his muscles, as well as take care of the joint. He feels that yoga has been truly a lifesaver for him. I began to urge him to consider yoga. Well, he had misconceptions, or preconceptions, about it. And he balked. He balked for quite a long time. And finally, i said, look, what do you have to lose, your misery . Yoga was a mystery to me. I really didnt know anything about it. And it was such a Foreign Language to me. And go ahead and lift your arms above your head. It was just something i was never exposed to in the past. I think in general, too, men dont know a lot about it, or maybe theyre sort of put off and are skeptical of what the benefits of yoga could be. The physical aspect is most known because of the benefits that the postures in yoga provide. Yoga is an internal cleanser for the body. Think about that. The body moves internally, of course, as well as externally. And so while we think of the muscles being worked, being strengthened, and being stretched, also all of the organs are more or less massaged by the movements that we make. And see if you can make your circle get larger and larger. Chris kelly, theres a woman that has aged gracefully. Shes done yoga most of her adult life, and she claims that, and rightfully so, that yoga has prevented her from having stiffness in her body anywhere. Chris knows that yoga has been a big benefit to her life. She is one of the most vital older people that i know. I am 86 years old. I just think that yoga has kept me in the best of health. And i am so thankful for that. I would say ive been going to yoga classes for 40 years. I have benefited so much by it. I have always been strong. No aches and pains. I wake up in the morning, do my exercises in bed, then i get up and start my day, and feel good. And not many people my age always do that. Now youll need to come up with your own breathing pattern. The physical benefits are pretty remarkable. Often people think, oh, well, its just about stretching and flexibility. Ive had people say, oh, i cant do yoga yet, im not flexible enough yet. And in fact you do yoga to increase flexibility. Im so passionate about yoga because i feel that once someone does yoga, there is an energy thats released to them that begins to work on every aspect of their being. If you look at simply the physical benefits, its amazing. I think if we were born in india we would know how to do this. Its an honor to have Mary Catherine in the class. Shes an author, and well known for her writing. But what impressed me is im an anthropologist by training, and her mother was Margaret Mead and her father gregory bateson. Catherine has found that yoga has been a great benefit to her life as a speaker, and someone who travels a lot, and as an author. I think that at the point where i started doing yoga, i had already had Chronic Fatigue syndrome, and was recovering from it, and wanted a form of exercise that would not make me collapse. I was around 50. I think yoga has kept me more limber. It helps me with balance, which is an issue for me. If i were not doing yoga for an extended period of time, i would have much more sense of deterioration in my body. And if i dont do yoga, i begin to feel the difference. Keeping both legs straight, reach towards the center. I think the deep stretching really does have an effect that goes for several days. People dont even think of me as the same person, because when i first went to yoga, my eyes were always down. I was very inside of myself, because i was fearful of the pain. So were lifting the shoulders and rolling them forward, or lifting the shoulders and pulling them back. And then as i was able to start doing some of the exercises, particularly with the hands and feet, i started to find that, a, there was less pain, and i was beginning to have. My hands were more facile, and i could pick up utensils again. Toes to the right. Heels to the left. In the warmups in class, we do a lot for the fingers, hands, and wrists. And thats to increase the circulation in the joints. And people with osteoarthritis in the hands or Rheumatoid Arthritis in the hands need Gentle Movement to work those joints and to create more ease in the joints. After those first three months i just quietly to myself thought, maybe this is really it. Maybe i really am Getting Better. And within six months i was absolutely positive, because i was now not having days where i couldnt walk. I could walk. And i do remember. You know, one of the things that was so hard for me before was i have a wonderful companion dog, and i couldnt walk him. I both couldnt walk, and i couldnt hold the leash. I couldnt clench my hands. And i remember when i first started being able to take him for just extraordinarily short walks up the driveway and down. And it just was. Its a Chain Reaction of good things. And i also think that yoga is of a whole. Its in the body, but it releases things from the body and the mind, and it can only. It can only benefit you. The benefits of yoga for arthritis are many. Many, many. One of the things thats remarkable is the yoga poses help bring increased circulation to the joints. And thats very important, not only to bring in nutrients, but also to take away waste products and toxins that accumulate in the body. Also the movement of yoga in the joints help stimulate and circulate synovial fluid, which causes the joint to be lubricated. Its kind of like the motor oil for the body. Yoga also is very important by increasing muscle strength because we need strong muscles to protect the joints. Move the hands into an infinity symbol. Ive got much more flexibility, and much, much less pain. And my hands are loaded with arthritis, but they dont hurt. And then just let your hands rest. And now feel that sensation of the movement in the spine. My hands just look a lot worse than they are. I think i just continue to use them and do the exercises that peggy has had us do in class and i have no problem. A few years ago for our 50th anniversary, our whole family came with us to tuscany. And one of my Favorite Places to go to is san gimignano. And theres a tower there. And i was able to climb to the top of that tower. It was between eight and 12 flights of stairs. Not everybody did, but i did. I think if i wasnt doing yoga i would probably not be getting around like i do. I wont say id be in a wheelchair, but its made me more flexible, more able to do everything i want to do. See if you can pull up from the wrists, and then release those wrists down. When people start yoga, often they feel the benefits right away. Maybe as soon as the first class. Ive had people tell me in one class it made such a difference to their well being, they decided to continue. During the day at home, whenever i have the opportunity, i will do some stretches. Every morning i do a couple stretches in the shower, and then when i get out of the shower. And if im lying down watching the tv, i do a lot of the twisting to benefit my back and sciatica problem. And you just incorporate it into your life during the day whenever you think about it. People find that they have, in a very short time, more ease in themselves. They feel more comfortable in this body that we dwell in. And whats wonderful is that its never too late to start. The changes that you see may evolve more slowly, but they are profound. In fact, someone that has started yoga late in life sometimes can see the benefits even faster than a young person who already has a lot of resilience in the body as well as the mind. If you are one of the many that suffers from arthritis, stay right here. Theres so much more to learn.
