"the boz" is the brightest star in vegas. nobody rules n-y-c like omar calhoun. and this player named "yogi" is a bear to guard. no need to "beat the buzzer." sports stars of tomorrow is just getting started. hello, everybody. i'm your host pat summerall. you're tuned into the show that takes you "coast to coast" in search of the brightest young stars in sports. today - we focus on the high school basketball season. we take you to each corner of the country - and feature the best players in each region. along the way - we also have feature stories on the "first family of hoops" in new york city - and one girls' player in chicago who's a "real jewel." but let's start our show "out west" with the consensus "number one" player in the class of 2012. when you think of las vegas - the first things that come to mind are casinos and sunshine. but underneath the "glitz and glamour" of vegas lies some of the nation's top high school basketball factories. ever since it first fielded a team in 2006 - findlay prep school has attracted some of the top high school players in the nation. and across town at bishop gorman high school - the "home of the gaels" is also home to the top player in the class of 2012. this is shabazz muhammad. opponents all over the country are quickly learning that there's no such thing as slowing down "the boz." ((music montage)) muhammad might be the top shooting guard prospect to come along in a generation. he's a silky smooth left hander who's "scoring prowess" has been compared to kobe bryant. muhammad comes from a grounded, supportive family. his father - ron holmes - played for u-s-c in the eighties - and shabazz credits him for his "athletic genes." "probably my dad. he pushed me a lot and is a very intense guy. my mom was an all american in track so shes a competitor. so they always talk to me about playing hard and all that stuff." as you can imagine - muhammad's recruitment has become a "full blown" battle. school like kentucky - kansas - and u-c-l-a - are putting the "full court press" on muhammad. at the end of the day - he's just trying to "enjoy the process." "its kinda fun and overwhelming. i talk to the coaches as much as i can, get a good relationship with them so when im at their school i know what they have in store for me." muhammad won't decide on a college until the end of his senior season. he's the runaway top player in the nation - and in the west region. the "second ranked" player out west is "six foot seven" forward anthony bennett from -you guessed it - findlay prep school. here's a look at the rest of the top five players out west. we move from "the boz" out west - to a "future bear" in texas. from the n-b-a finals - to hosting the super bowl - to "back to back" world series - nobody has had more "sports success" in the last year than the dallas-fort worth metroplex. and the d-f-w dominance isn't just limited to the pros. on the high school hard court - d-f-w features several of the top basketball prospects in the nation. this year - isaiah austin of arlington grace prep is the top center in the country. austin is "every bit" of seven feet tall - but he's hardly your typical "big man." his style resembles that of mavericks' star dirk novitzki - as he can "knock down" the "three pointer" with ease. during his junior year - austin averaged 14 points, nine rebounds, and six blocks per game. he'll play college ball at baylor. another one of the nation's top talents hails from the dallas suburb of flower mound. this is marcus smart - and he might be the most complete player from the class of 2012. last season - he led marcus to the five-a state championship. he averaged 14 points - five rebounds - and five assists per game during that championship year. smart can play "all five" positions on the floor -and might be the "toughest" defender in the nation. he's comitted to play college hoops at oklahoma state. as for the rest of the southwest - here's a look at our rankings... we move from the "plains of texas" - to the "skyscrapers of new york" as we head northeast. in new york city - national correspondent mike rigg catches up with one of the city's top young players. here's mike with the story of omar calhoun. you can't go anywhere in new york city without facing a dynasty. from the "longest lasting" shows on broadway - to the "endless" parade of yankees world championships - you aren't anything in new york - until you prove you can last. and at christ the king high school in queens - there's a basketball dynasty in the making. today we meet a "brother and sister" combo - who are the brightest young stars in the big apple. standup - clip 20 in new york city, the only thing more common than subways are famous basketball players. now christ the king thinks it has two of the best. omar and sierra calhoun might be the best in school history. clip 2 - coach 3:15 from day one you can see that theyre very loving but very competitive. there not just competitive on basketball court. socially and academically. that's what makes them special. want to do better in grades and show who can be the better person. omar calhoun is a "six foot three" guard who averages 20 points per game at christ the king. his younger sister - sierra - is one of the best players in the class of 2014. she learned the game because of her brother's success. whenever he played - she played, too. clip 6 - dad 14:45 when i took omar to the park around 7-8 years old she was like five. she used to want to be there, show up to ball handling drills, that's how she became so good so early. hard worker right out of the crib. clip 5 - sierra 9:15 always. ever since my brother started ive always been playing basketball. i saw him play and wanted him to play. were a family my mom played, my dad played. clip 4 - omar 6:35 when i started i was always playing and developing and she would be there with me. always want to get out too. enjoyed watching me play and started playing as well. and there's no better school in the country to blossom at than christ the king. it's truly one of the top basketball programs in the country. both male and female superstars started their careers at christ the king. stars like lamar odom...speedy claxton...sue bird...and chamique holdsclaw. clip 2 - coach :18 we have a ton of division 1 players. 3 first round wnba picks. tradition been going back 20-25 years. khalid reeves. derek phelps. lamar odom. speedy claxton. clip 4 - omar 8:05 ctk is a great program.lot of great pros. lot of guys who i watched play picked up things from them. want to add all that to my game. omar calhoun will have a chance to carve out his own legacy starting next season - when he plays college basktball at connecticut. until then - he will be at this gym - and hanging out with the family that's pushed him so hard along the way. clip 3 (not clip 4) - omar ever since i was little my dad put a basketball in my hand. hoops on every corner growing up in brooklyn. as soon as i was born basketball came into my life. the calhouns are the perfect basketball family - at the perfect basketball school. and it won't be long until omar and sierra calhoun are the next big stars in the big apple. in new york city - i'm mike rigg. thanks, mike. calhoun isn't the "top rated" player in the northeast. instead - that honor goes to kyle anderson of 2011 national champion saint anthony's of jersey city. anderson will head "across the country" in college - and play at u-c-l-a. here's a look at the rest of the top five in the "always loaded" northeast. it's time for our first break on today's show. right after this - we tell you about the top "overall" players in the class of 2012. we also feature the top girls player - who is a real "jewell" in chicago. so stick around. we're ranking the top five overall prospects in the class of 2012 in this week's toyota top five. we already covered the top two. but number three is mitch mcgary of wolfeboro, new hampshire. the "six foot ten" forward averaged 18 points and nine rebounds per game as a junior. he's undecided on a college choice. here's a look at the rest of the top five. let's continue our "high school hoops" special and head southeast. north carolina might have the best basketball roots in the nation. after all - it was just three years ago when we introduced you to a raliegh native by the name of john wall. this year - ralieigh is "once again" home to one of the nation's top prospects. this is rodney purvis of upper room christian academy. he's a "six foot four" guard who is frequently compared to wall. he can play both guard positions with ease. as a junior - purvis averaged 25 points per game. he'll stay in raliegh for college - and play for north carolina state. another of the top players "down south" is archie goodwin of little rock, arkansas. goodwin is an explosive guard. during his junior season - he led sylvan hills high school to the state championship game - while averaging 27 points per game. here's a look at the other top players in the region. we move from one "hoops hotbed" to another as we head midwest. even though the university of indiana hasn't won very many games in the last few years - the hoosiers are "on fire" on the recruiting trail. indiana has secured another top player in the class of 2012 in point guard yogi ferrell of indianapolis. ferrell is a "prototypical" point guard who led park tudor high school to the state championship last year. we'll have more on ferrell in an upcoming episode. here's a look at the top five in the midwest. let's keep it in the midwest - and move to chicago. we take a break to tell you about the top girls player in the nation... skokie, illinois proclaims itself as a village - but - honestly - it's a suburb to one of america's largest cities. skokie is just a quick train ride on the "skokie shuttle" away from downtown chicago. and - like chicago - sports are a big part of what makes skokie go. niles west high school in skokie is the alma mater of steelers' running back rashard mendenhall. and now - it's home to one of the best girls basketball players in the nation. this is what it takes to be the best two guard in the country..jewell loyd's work ethic has college coaches loving her game..but it was the summer of 2010 that her game went to another level.. at the usa 17 and under national tournament is where jewell picked up a gold medal for her strong, energtic efforts off the bench... tony konsewicz: she picked up some great habits. reading books in her free time. jewel has such an electric personality that she makes friends wherever she goes. she got to meet some of the girls overseas and share those experiences you saw the growth in her personality and maturity wise. you saw shes a mature kid to begin with but shes on a different playing field now. jewell: that really helped me grow as a defensive player. a lot of times i tend not to play a lot of hard defense. going there i really picked a lot of stuff up, styles of play, i had great coaches. i felt honored to be on that team. basketball wasn't her first choice early on-tennis was her game..until one day it hit her at the strangest of times.. jewell: i was actually playing a tennis tournament to be ranked nationally right then and there i thought i didn't want to do this for the rest of my life. i didn't have the same passion. also my brother played basketball so ive always watched it and always loved the game. i didn't see myself as a tennis player at all so i changed and glad i made the decision. the decision was a great one for the high school coach at niles west in the suburbs of chicago..coach tony k. couldn't wait for jewell's freshman year.. tony: as a sixth grader she was playing in the eighth grade game. and youre like she could play for our varsity team right now. she was going somewhere else. coach left loyola academy where she was at and came right to us. every year its crazy. you see her after freshman year and its like how much better can she get. sophomore year she had a tremendous season and made the u 17 olympic team. she went overseas and came back this year and she was off the charts. she's had many off the chart games including a 46 point night that could have been half a hundred if she wanted it..but that's what makes her so special.. calvin loyd/father: i remember that game exactly and it goes to show how good of a teammate and player she is. she really didn't care about scoring fifty. jewell 16:15 "it would have been nice" 16:37 "think about it" molly kleppin: i just think shes very athletic and she doesn't have many tendencies so most of the time when youre playing against a good player youre like they always go right to push you off but shes strong with both hands so if you push her one way she'll just go the other way so she can beat you off the dribble, shoot it. just good all around. on the court you may see jewell start off by guarding the center, than move over to the power forward position and than play a little point guard-and this is all in the first half..the oppossing coaches have thrown all kinds of defenses at jewel but nothing seems to work.. calvin: weve seen everything. from her freshman year, each year theyre two and three people on her. all kind of crazy defenses. junk defenses. we know whats gonna come and so far shes been able to deal with it. there might be some more out there but shes just playing hard and on another level. tony/coach 4:30 "nothing really rattles her" 4:41 "about it" that's one of many reasons why the recruiting was fierce over jewel..for her the decision was simple-she not only loves basketball but also is a huge fan of fighting irish football.. jewell: i just got a really good vibe there. coaches are amazing and treat you like their own and the team is goofy. im the kind of player who goofs around but know when to be serious. that's the kind of team i saw down there. academics are unbelievable. i think what got me was the football games. im a big football person. gwen loyd: im very excited about notre dame. its close by. im glad she made that decision. and well be able to see her and visit her and spend quality time. if shes sick i can always drive there in two hours as oppposed to getting on a plane. shes my daughter. its different. when it's a guy youre like okay, you go away. but shes my daughter and im sure her father feels the same way.s the phrase "diamonds are a woman's best friend" might be better put for the lady irish as " a jewell of a player is coming their way".. it's time for another break. right after this - we highlight the "kicking game" in an amazing "play of the week." we also tell you about the top players in the rockies - and update our national rankings. we'll be right back. we have an amazing special teams effort in this week's play of the week. hayden knudson plays for hayfield high school near washington, d-c. and check out this amazing field goal block. he darts into the backfield fast enough to catch the ball "in the air" - and then returns it 90 yards for a touchdown. it's one of the most amazing special teams plays you'll ever see - as well as our national play of the week. we head to the rockies - where conference "re-alignment" has paid off for one basketball program. in the summer of 2011 - the university of utah jumped from the mountain west conference - to the "pac ten." utah fans hoped that the switch to a "big time" conference would pay off - and help the school get some "big time" recruits. well - it looks like they're getting their wish. the utes have received a commitment from the top player in the region - jordan loveridge of west jordan, utah. the "six foot six" loveridge is a talented forward who's ranked among the nation's best. loveridge averaged 24 points per game last season for west jordan. here's a look at the "best of the rest" in the rockies. let's quickly update the chase for the national high school football championship as we check our top ten rankings. earlier this fall - we introduced you to stefon diggs - an explosive wide receiver in olney, maryland. diggs has been "shredding defenses" for good counsel high school. and now - both diggs - and good counsel - are in the thick of the national championship chase. good counsel is undefeated this season - and have several impressive wins on their resume. the falcons started the year with an impressive win over manatee high school of bradenton, florida. and last month - they "blew out" a talented squad from rival dematha. in that game - diggs returned a punt 60 yards for a touchdown to give good counsel the lead. also - running back dorian o'daniel scored three times in the victory. with their hardest games behind them - the falcons should coast the rest of the season - and find themselves "in the thick" of the national title conversation. as for the rest of the rankings - here's this week's top ten. it's time for our last break. up next - we feature a rising star in the sunshine state in our "delivery of the week" segment. each week - we sort through the mail truck - and feature our best "sent in" video in our delivery of the week segment. this is a d-v-d sent to us from fort myers, florida. its of rising basketball star kelsey mitchell of fort myers high school. she averaged 10 points and five assists per game as a junior. mitchell is undecided on a college choice - but has a bright future on the hard court. we're just about out of time today. here's a look at some "hoops highlights" as we "get in the zone." for all of us on the show - i'm pat summerall. have a wonderful day. good saturday morning. it's november 12. >> welcome to good morning maryland. we have great new this is weekend. >> good baby news. >> and baby pictures to boot. >> megan and rob had their twin eating. >> let's talk more about your teenaged daughter. what happened here? >> she received an acceptance award letter to the university of pennsylvania, and my husband and i took her out to buy her a car and drove the car home, and at the dinner table, she collapsed and had an asthma attack and died instantly. >> oh, dear, and that inspired to you -- >> it inspired me to eat healthier. there was adopting a cat, how is that different than a dog? dogs seem to get more press. >> i try to -- i want to disprove that cats -- you don't have to walk them outside, but other than that, they need just as much time with their humans. they need play time and affection and want to be with you just as much as the dogs do. i don't want someone to think that they can get a cat, and they will just go live their life, and you just put down food. >> not the case at all. >> not the case. >> at arden's ark, sometimes there are drop offs and sometimes, there are mills. how do you get your cats? >> they come as you noticed when you were walking in, and he walks well, but something that i think a lot of pet owners should be aware of is walking your dog, and when you meet other people with their dogs, the proper way to meet. let's say you're walking your dog, and i'm walking him, and we are coming nose to nose and face to face, it's not a good way for dogs to meet. in dog language, that's confrontational. >> oh, i never knew that. >> and oftentimes, that's why dogs may not get along initially, and a frisky guy like him, he may come right up and pounce on your dog to play, and your dog may be like whoa. i'm not ready, a much more gradual side by sidewalking goes further rather than nose to nose and face to face. >> actually, i was paying a lot of close attention that when i walk my dog, she is very frisky and sociable and loves to go up to other dogs. that is something to keep in mind. >> some dogs may take a minute to warm up, and like when i first met you, if i said hi! my name's tammy and jumped into your arms. >> and that would be like whoa!
