Police arrested the suspect off route 1 in savage not far from where that shooting happened. After a 15hour massive man hunt, 29yearold Steven Prather is in custody. We have a tremendous amount of work to do to find out, you know, why he chose to do what he did. We have a tremendous amount of work to make sure hes accountable for that. Wednesday, police say drivers spotted prather pacing with a gun around this red pickup truck, but when officers approached, they say he opened fire, hitting officer stephen houk. As the gunman jumped over the guardrail and ran into the woods. Officials say prather was shot in the leg and likely hid in the storm drain all night, but thursday morning, a witness spotted him and told police. He just put his hands up and went to the ground. Wjz investigates and finds prather has a long criminal record. Its a lengthy one, and it includes violent crime. Court records show several arrests in maryland in 2002 for vehicle theft, in 2004 for assault, and in 2006 for attempted firstdegree murder and assault, then in 2011 an arrest in North Carolina for breaking and entering, traffic violations, and more. Prather faces more charges now after this latest shooting. And police say they found a gun deep inside a storm drain and believe it belongs to prathers. Jess, back to you. Kristy, thank you. After having surgery, officer houk remains in serious but stable condition. This morning, city police are investigating a deadly shooting in west baltimore. It happened last night on the 1400 block of north longwood street. Police say a 24yearold man was found shot in the stomach. He was taken to the hospital where he later died. The victims name has not been released, and so far no arrests have been made. Anyone with information is urged to call police. In baltimore county, the cause of a massive house fire is under investigation this morning. Sky eye chopper 13 was over the scene in glen arm last night. You can see the flames were shooting right to the roof of the home on running fox road. Fortunately, no one was hurt. This morning, a fouryearold baby boy fights for his life after a tragic car crash in Anne Arundel County. Officials say the child was not in a car seat. In fact, he was in someones lap. Police say Matthew Mitchell was behind the wheel of this crushed dodge caravan. He was driving down clark road wednesday when he veered across the center line and crashed head on into another car. Mitchells fourmonthold son in the lap of the front seat passenger. Right now that i know of, he has a fractured skull. He had bleeding on his brain. Family members of the childs mother are furious the baby wasnt properly restrained. His father is drinking and driving with a child in the front seat period. A child is not supposed to be in the front seat without no car seat. This child being under oneyearold should have been in a rearfacing shield seat in the rear of that vehicle. But according to a new study, an alarming amount of parents admit they dont always put their child in a car or booster seat. In a survey of more than a thousand parents, safe kids worldwide found one in four admitted to driving without buckling up their children. They told us if they were taking a short ride or if they were driving overnight with their kids or perhaps as a reward, they found that it was okay not to buckle up for that ride. Theyre expected to be okay. Five people are hospitalized after a ride at the North Carolina state fair malfunctioned. The ride called the vortex was caught on tape just 15 minutes before the accident last night. The ride spins, twirls and flips riders upside down. A preliminary investigation indicates the passengers were hurt when the ride started up begin as they were getting off. Two people suffered serious injuries. In massachusetts, classes are set to resume today at danvers high school, the Boston School where a teacher was allegedly killed by one of her own students. A classmate of the 14yearold suspect says math teacher Colleen Ritzer asked the 14yearold to stay after class on the day she was killed. Her body was found in the woods behind the school. Additional security and counselors will be on hand today. In this city, a teachers dream store now exists. A wish list depot stocks supplies for free. Inside elementary and middle school, a classroom has been transformed into a store stokd with School Supplies. Its a program that inmates who are military veterans work with dogs that will help wounded veterans when they come home. Alex has the story. The maryland prison in haggerstownhouses inmates doing serious time for serious crimes, but locked up doesnt necessarily mean shut off. Done something wrong, the little bit we can do to return to try to do something right. That something is the early training of service dogs. Its done in other prisons, but this is the first time veterans who have been convicted of crimes are raising the dogs to aid wounded veterans returning from iraq and afghanistan. The veterans, this is an opportunity for you to step up to the plate and do something unselfish for somebody else. Pay back to the people who help us so much, to the disabled veterans. But help flows both ways when a dog is in the middle. Be incarcerated and have a dog, its, like, no matter how bad my day is, that dog is always wagging its tail. After a year of care and training, the first three dogs graduated to the next step in the program. From their home behind bars, the dogs now go onto new york for advanced training, a goodbye that isnt easy. And so its like losing a friend. I dont know. Its going to be very very difficult. Although the next recruits waiting outside the prison gates might help ease that loss. Wjz Eyewitness News. The very latest for wjz. The heads of four contractors that built the troubled web site healthcare. Gov raised their hands to swear in before congress and then said the Obama Administration made lastminute changes and decided to launch the site without enough testing. Mr. Lowell . Yes. After days of hearings, many member ofs of congress say they still have questions. Navy base in tennessee. The shooter did strike two fellow National Guard members, one on the leg, the other in the foot before he was arrested. Yesterday the kindergarten class in glen burnie was playing on the playground when one child found and picked up the syringe. It was determined a total of 7 students touched it. They were taken to area hospitals as a precaution. School leaders will speak with children today to discuss the incident. We now know what caused several Baltimore City School Students to fall ill this week. About five students from the Reach Partnership school in clifton park were taken to the hospital wednesday morning. Turns out, they tested positive for marijuana. Other students tell wjz a school staff member gaef out laced marijuana cookies, but investigators are still looking into that. The kennedy cousin convicted of murdering a young neighbor almost four decades ago could soon walk out of a connecticut prison. Michael skakels attorney filed a motion that his client be released from prison while he awaits a new trial. Ven eta has the very latest for wjz. Michael skakel could soon be a free man. The kennedy cousin spent the last 11 years in prison for the 1975 murder of teenage neighbor marxtha moxley, but a judge tossed out the conviction. I think this judge looked at this record and said, this is a case where there really was reasonable doubt. Skakels newtorian filed a motion friday asking his client be released on bond while awaiting a new trial. The motion echoes the judges claim that original attorney Mickey Sherman failed to properly represent skakel. What the judge says is that there were people who might have killed Martha Moxley and they were not Michael Skakel and yet we didnt learn about that. One of those other people is michaels brother, tommy skakel, who was the last person seen with moxley before he beaten body was found under a tree on halloween 1975 and yet at the trial, this judge certainly finds that Mickey Sherman did not point the finger at tommy skakel, the brother. Sherman says hes not worried about damage to his reputation. Skakel, he says, should never have been convicted. Prosecutors will appeal skakels release and the new trial. In greenwich, connecticut, wjz Eyewitness News. Skakels attorney requested his client be released on half a Million Dollars bond. A videotaped confession of a man accused of killing washington red skins safety sean taylor is played for the jury. Yesterday, a detective testified 23yearold erik rivera, jr. , admitted to breaking into taylors home, kicking down the bedroom door and shooting him. Prosecutors say rivera and four others from the fort myers area thought taylor would be playing a game when they went to his home, but he happened to be home with an injury. A shocking realization from one of the most successful quarter bashgs ever to play in the nfl. Bret favre says he suffers from memory loss and believes that maybe the result of concussions. Duncan reports for wjz. For 20 seasons, bret favre stared down some of the biggest, meanest players in the nfl and won. Now, retired, favre says Something Else has him scared. Texas but had some time at the Naval Academy and decided to come and settle here. Yeah. We think thats pretty cool. I love it. But ever since you first started joining us, your career has just its all because of hard work, dead ration and effort. Right. And me being on your station. Well, that was that was the last one lasted five years. Thats right. Are you happy with the time line youre on, where your career is right now . Yeah. Im happy. Its continuing to progress. I think people are recognizing that, and theres a need for that music on the east coast. It seems to be centering around, like, the baltimore area. I would think that genre of music would already have had a foothold on the east coast. Is it really a smooth jazz west coast thing thats migrating east . I think its coming back because it was going west hard. You know, they took away all of our smooth jazz stations, and they all went to the west coast, and then for us, you know, it kind of left us on the east coast without anything. Now, all of a sudden youve got xm sirius, pan dora, spotify, all these ways to hear the music you want to hear now. Right. The listenership never left, just the the Radio Stations left satellite has proven good for you, huh . Yeah. Its great. Internet radio is great. You know, its all good. There it is right there. Maryland attorney general doug gansler is under fire over his actions at a party where underage drinking may have taken place. The photo shows gansler dressed in a white shirt in the center of a teenage house party in delaware. The party was chaperoned, and he saw no evidence of alcohol at the time he was there. He and the officer are in the hospital after a 15hour man hunt, 29yearold Stephen Prather was arrested yesterday along route 1 in savage. On wednesday, he opened fire on offices striking 30yearold stephen houfk. Prather was shot in the leg during the exchange of gunfire. Officer houk remains in serious but stable condition. Back here, city police are investigating a deadly shooting in west baltimore. It happened last night on the 1400 block of north longwood street. Police say a 24yearold man was found shot in the stomach. He was taken to the hospital where he later died. So far no arrests have been made. Anyone with information is urged to call city police. In baltimore county, the cause of a massive house fire is under investigation. Sky eye chopper 13 was over the scene in glen arm last night. As you can see, flames were shooting through the roof of the home on running fox road. Foj gnatly no one was injured. Several students are taken to the hospital after a syringe is found on a playground at an Anne Arundel County school. Yesterday the kindergarten class at rippling woods elementary in glen burnie was playing on the playground when one child found and picked up the syringe. 7 students touched it. They were taken to area hospitals as a precaution. A wish list depot stocks supplies for free inside middle school. A classroom has been transformed into a school stocked with supplies.
