major interstate collapses 50 feet into the river below. susan mcginnis has the story for wjz. >> a bridge collapsed on interstate 5 about half way between seattle and vancouver. a handful of people and their vehicles plunged into the river. >> rough day. i'm glad to be here breathing. >> dan fly and his wife had to be rescued from the river alon with one other man. he said the semi hit the bridge, causing the collapse. >> there was a big puff of dust. i hit the brakes. the weight of the tray iler, we went off with the bridge as it collapsed into the river. >> interstate 5 is a heavily traveled section of highway, connecting canada to seattle and the rest of the west coast. >> the middle of transportation and commerce and industry in washington. we have started the process tonight of resigning a system and detours to accommodate. >> traffic is backed up and being rerouted. the bridge was built in 1955 and it has passed every inspection. >> the bridge has a rating of 47 and was inspected twice last year. >> the federal highway administration listed it as functionally obsolete but it noted the bridge has, quote, somewhat better than minimum adequacy to tolerate being left in place as is. in washington, susan mcginnis, wjz eyewitness news. >> according to the federal highway administration bridges get the functionally obsolete tag when it is out dated. as clean up efforts continue in oklahoma officials revise the number of homes damaged in monday's deadly tornado. authorities now say about 12,000 homes were damaged or destroyed. authorities estimate the damage to be the montgomery mall. the very latest on the rescue effort. >> one man is dead and a second construction worker was trapped for hours after concrete and steel came raining down on top of them. >> from sky chopper 13 a clear view of the massive slap of fallen concrete. >> you will see in the middle of the parking garage where there's a partial collapse. >> 50,000 pounds of debris fell on two construction workers below just before 2:00 p.m. >> that's terrible. >> more than 150 rescue workers rushed to the west field montgomery mall to search for the men. one of the construction workers was pronounced dead. it took 4 hours to free the other trapped worker. >> we had to shore it to where it was seeded and then remove materials whether it be steel or concrete around the patient in order to free him. >> the collapse happened in part of the garage that's under construction. >> you never thought that a parking garage that i always park in hurt families. >> since he couldn't make it to the emergency room the er came to him. >> a surgical team was flown in to assist in the rescue. >> they bring out surgeons, a nurses and work together as a team alongside our paramedics. >> just before 6:00 p.m. the worker is finally freed. he was rushed to a state police helicopter, conscious and talking with paramedics as he was air lifted to shock trauma. >> fire officials will remain on the scene through friday morning to ensure the structure is safe. in bethesda, meghan mccorkell. >> the parking garage is under construction as a new movie theater is being built at the mall. a 14-year-old and her 19-year-old boyfriend are indicted and charged as adults in the death of her father. dennis lane was stabbed 2 weeks ago. morgan arnold was indicted on solicitation of murder charges. he convinced jason bulmer to kill her father. her attorney want s the case moved to juvenile court. a federal audit finds stimulus dollars intended for baltimore city schools didn't go directly to the classroom. the audit of 2009 and 2010 expenses shows more than $4,300 were spent on dinner cruises, more than $2,400 for meals. the u.s. department of education found similar misspending in prince george's county schools. former anne arundel county executive john leopold has a lot less money this morning. leopold paid a $75,000 fine as part of his misconduct conviction. he resigned and served 30 days in jail after his conviction earlier this year. as part of his sentence he agreed to pay that fine and complete community service. many marylanders will be hitting the wearing when he walked into the ultra diamonds jewelry store at queenstown premium out let, gun in one hand, robbing the store with the other. >> made off with dozens of pieces of jewelry, many of which were diamond rings and jewelry. >> a wig, baseball cap, big beard and black blazer are now in the hands of state police, trying to determine if they hold any evidence leading them to the gun as 50,000 pounds of debris caved in on two construction workers. was was pronounced dead. it took 4 hours for rescue teams to free the other trapped worker who was air lifted to shock trauma with serious injuries. fire officials are still investigating what caused that collapse. the funerals have started for the 24 victims of the monster tornado that hit moore. bigad shaban is in moore with two stories for wjz. >> it was the last day of classes for students at plaza towers elementary school in moore, oklahoma. it sounded just like any other school around the country. kids reunited at a different school because this is what plaza towers elementary looks like now. 3rd grade teacher jennifer done is being called a hero because she used her body to shield her students. >> it's been replaying and replaying in my head. >> that was done on tuesday. this was her yesterday, walk ing despite doctors fears she may never do it again. >> to take that first step was just great. >> the town hospital, moore medical center, took a direct hit from the tornado. doctors and nurses had minutes to secure patients before the twister tore apart much of the building. >> i was 5 sent meters already and having contractions. >> sheila taylor was in labor when the tornado started barrelling down on the i would -- on the building. they rushed her to the operating room. >> they hunkered down around my bed. you know, i just -- i found the nearest hand to me and i grabbed it. >> when taylor opened her eyes this is what she saw, a room without walls. strangers helped her into an ambulance and she delivered her son, braden emmanuel at another hospital. >> as moore, o.k. klahoma begins to recover and to rebuild from this massive tornado please stay with wjz and cbs for the very latest on the storms, the damage and the people getting involved. police raid an east baltimore home looking for drugs but what they find inside is much scarier. an arsenal of weapons, including three assault rifles and bullet proof vests. kai jackson has more on this shocking discovery. >> police tell eyewitness news this amount of am nugsmo has the potential for a violent ending. >> officers seized guns, drugs and money inside this southeast baltimore home. >> it happened through an undercover investigation where detectives bought in an undercover capacity narcotics out of this house. >> police arrested 29-year-old francisco mil os and 29-year-old lenny lewis. milos is a convicted felon from florida. the guns, drugs and money were part of a drug operation. the ammo had detectives concerned that something much more sinister was in the works. >> this is a picture of the suspect. do you know him? >> i see him. i don't know him. i've seen him around the area. >> whoos what's he like? >> a nice guy. >> he told police he was preparing for the war. he had three handguns, three rifles, including an ak-47 and ar-15 and one shotgun. they seized marijuana 00010001-- >> it's troublesome to hear someone has this type of weaponry in their home while selling drugs. >> police tell eyewitness news that milos is being held on $450,000 bond. the woman living inside the house with him, lenny lewis is being held on $50,000 bond. the investigation continues. i'm kai jackson reporting. >> police say lenny lewis was arrested because there were drugs in the bedroom that she and milos shared. patricia heart was residence cue from a second floor bathroom tuesday. yesterday she circumed to her injuries. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. officials say there were no working smoke alarms in the house. thises the third fire-related death in anne arundel county this year. in just a few hours the 2013 class of the u.s. naval academy will graduate. that president obama is set
