The teenager who opened fire inside Perry Hall High School on the first day of school learns his sentence as Police Release his videotaped confession. Good morning. In those new interview tapes robert gladden admits he had been plotting the attack formonts. A judge has sentenced him to 35 years behind bars. Surveillance videos show robert gladden junior pull a shotgun from his pants inside Perry Hall High School cafeteria. As he opened fire teachers rushed in his direction pinning the teen against a vending machine. I put the stock in the pocket and put it under my shirt. Gladden tells police he warned two friends to leave the school before the attack. He then assembled the gun and walked into the cafeteria. I didnt have any one person i was trying to kill. I just turned to the side and shot. That shot hit 17yearold Daniel Borowy, a special needs student. Gladden brought 21 bullets with him. If he hadnt been stopped his plan . Get as many as i could and kill myself. So you wanted to kill as many as you could. In court gladdens father pleaded for mercy saying he never saw this coming. His lawyer says the teen has issues. Were penalizing people with mental illness. Ill probably be fearful probably for the rest of my life, but thats just me. Theyre hurting. Were hurting. Everything is. Theres no winner. Gladden will be 50 years old when he gets out of prison. During the sentencing hearing, gladden read a statement apologizing to the borowy family and asking for understanding. City police have identified the two people shot to death and left in a burning car last week. Theyre identified as 33year old alysia strickland and 34 yearold taewon tuck. The burning car was found in an alley on clifton avenue friday morning. The two people inside had gunshot wounds to their head and that strickland was a graduate student at morgan state university. Thousands descend on annapolis. Theyre pushing for a multibillion dollars construction plan to fix crumbling classrooms. Wjz and mike schuh are live with the latest. Good morning mike. A few thousand students, city leaders and concerned citizens rallied in front of the state house in annapolis monday. They are advocates for baltimore schools and demanding more money to fund them. Its time for better buildings, better baltimore, better maryland. Phillipe jackson is the principal of Gilmore Elementary School in baltimore and he says its falling apart. You see the vents, you have some that work, some that does not work. In fact the Baltimore Education Coalition says it has a bold long range plan. 1 billion is the estimate for the amount needed to renovate 65 schools, perhaps the harder sell will be the political will needed from the governor and lawmakers. When the confetti falls on the last day of the session, we will have a deal for baltimore schools. We really need to make some improvements in Baltimore City schools. We recognize that our children deserve the best and if theyre going to learn theyve got to be in facilities ready for learning. Jacksons school is a prime example and gilmore elementary is on the list to be renovated if it can make it that far. Do you think people will come up with the money . How soon will we be notified we would have to go out on furlough. The prospects are for having a budget in a month. I think that maybe there needs to be a shift in the focus. People arent getting that chance to get their views expressed. Marylands senator ben cardin fielded questions at the Social Security administration in woodlawn. Its going to cause significant reduction in service levels. These are job killing cut doctors governor omalley on face the nation. Whatever our differences might be, we understand this is an economic threat. This is going to hurt a lot of moms and dads in our region who go to work every day. Omalley and other governors met with president obama at the white house. They need to get out of the box and understand that this has real implications in peoples lives. The president needs to stop campaigning, stop trying to scare the american people. Stop trying to scare states. All of us are calling on congress to come together to solve this problem and do it not in an arbitrary way but in a way where we can compromise and save jobs and keep our economy moving forward. In september the carol county couple left their farm flying to russia where they spent days getting to know two 10yearold girls they desperately hope to adopt. How did it feel when you actually met the girls for the first time . After the first meeting we knew that these girls were for us. Wjz has blurred the girls faces since matt and julie are waiting to see if the ban is lifted. Theyre both deserve a loving home, and thats what we can provide. Many believe this adoption ban is in response to a recent american law calling for sanctions against russians who commit human rights violations. Ruth wedgwood is on the state departments Advisory Committee on international law. Are the children and their families the victims of some political tug of war between the two countries. Its particularly cruel to have International Adoption become the captive of other issues in the american russian relationship. I would take this as a private sector issue which should not be held hostage. Americans and russians are protesting the ban concerned for the more than half a million orphans waiting for homes. When russia opened its doors to american adoption in the 1990s they adopted more than 60,000 russian children. Judy wilson is working with more than 20 families whose adoptions are up in the air. It shouldnt be a privilege to have a family who loves you that you grow up with. You know, it just shouldnt be a privilege. It should be a right of every kid to have a family. Heres Susan Mcginnis reporting for wjz president obama heads to a virginia ship building town today. New port news virginia is home to navy and defense contractors. Families could face layoffs if budget cuts kick in this friday. And leave a lot of folks who are already pretty thinly stretched scrambling to figure out what to do. Republicans in congress are criticizing the president saying he should stay in washington. Stop cam paining and come back to the table and work with us. The main Sticking Point between the white house and congressional republicans, taxes. The president wants to close tax loop holes along with spending cuts. Republicans say they raised taxes in the fiscal cliff deal in january. Mr. President you got your tax increase. Its time to cut spending here in washington. There seems seems to be a willingness on the part of some republicans to let the cuts happen figuring since theyre phased in over several months the impact wont be as severe as the president suggests. The president said during a meeting of the nations governors monday the budget cuts are already being felt. Companies are preparing layoff notices. Families are preparing to cut back on expenses. But some republican governors arent buying it. I think it is possible to cut less than 3 of the federal budget without causing devastating consequences. They say the president is using scare tactics. Trial is underway for a new York City Police officer a university of maryland graduate charged in a bizarre cannibalism plot. Heres adam may with more on the outrage. Baltimore county councilman todd huff looked nothing like his picture when he was arrested on charges of driving under the influence over the weekend. Elected in 2010 the district 3 republican represents federal and northern Baltimore County. Around 3 a. M. Saturday huff left the elks lodge in towson and drove a county owned vehicle without his headlights on. When Police Stopped him for erratic driving he pulled into an auto repair business on york road he owns. According to documents huff asked arresting officers dont you know who i am. He admitted, yeah, ive had a few drinks and he asked do we really need to be doing this. Then police say huff called the police chief repeatedly. The chief received three phone messages in the middle of the night from councilman huff. He did not respond to them. Police say huff stumbled, staggered before register a. 20. It has constituents outraged. Do you think the councilman should keep his job or resign . I think he should resign. You should take responsibility for that and step down. In a statement huff says he made a poor decision and is prepared to face the consequences. He regrets the pain he has caused family and friends. He declined a request for an on camera interview. The councilman was released from custody a few hours after his arrest. Today marks one year since the death of trayvon martin, the teenager killed by a Neighborhood Watch volunteer in florida. Martin who was 17 was walking through a gated community in sanford when he was shot and killed. The man accused in his death is said to be tried on june 10th. Martins parents say they continue to work to keep their sons memory alive. We want to attend a candlelight ceremony here in new york. Weve already done something in miami. Weve done a peace walk to let teenagers know they have a right to walk in peace. Zimmerman says he shot martin in selfdefense. He is charged with Second Degree murder. Thats what we think thats why thats why we were drawn to it so much because it has a procedure element but really the strength of it comes from the characters and how they interact. And the cases themselves are all intertwined with their own problems and their own families and their own mistakes theyve made. So you have these cases which are directly link today them as well as hearing about their background of their family. I think that being a character driven show is what keeps people what will keep people interested in it. We have some very, very, very fine actors in this show and well drawn characters, well written characters. I think its going to be a good ride. You know what it reminds me of don, homicide. I was thinking streets of san fransisco. It is a lot like merchandise. You homicide. I watched a lot of the first 48 and because its real cops behavior and stuff and we had some really great consultants on the show who are retired first grade new york city homicide detectives and we learned a lot from them and nick wooten is who wrote on nypd blue and has a storied career as a television writer. He was able to incorporate real dialogue and real language and we got to meet and interact with homicide detectives and i think its very true to form. To make sure our audience knows what happens, one of you is the young street hero flying his way through the department. The other has been there for a while and youve been paired together. And you get along from the first day and everythings roses right in. Not quite. No, they have yeah, they have a fractious relationship but its based on respect but its going to be something that theyre always butting heads, but at the same time theres this kind of natural chemistry that they have and are kind of a love for one another as characters. Its all about their journey and how they become better men. You see its progress. You dont get so much of the clashing that it becomes uninteresting. It starts to mesh and weaves together really well. By the 13th episode, youre going to really see intensity of their relationship and how far theyve come from where they started.
