whitney was one of the most popular girls at school and friends with just about everybody. they both went to an all girl's catholic high school in new jersey and graduated together in 1981. it is back to court today for george huguely. the uva lacrosse player is on trial for the murder of his ex- girlfriend yeardly love from cockysville here. prosecutors say he beat her to death while the two were drunk and fighting. the defense says love's death was accidental. we will have more from adam may on what to expect in court today during our next half- hour. an eastern shore man is recovering after he was shot by policies who say he was trying to run them over. 35-year-old leon spry of preston was found slumped over inside an apartment building. police say he became combative, ran to his truck and tried to drive away with the officer in front of the truck. he was shot in the torso and being treated this morning. a city man is taking police to court. chris sharp is suing the department for violating his civil rights over this videotaped arrest. sharp recorded it during the preakness in 2010. officers then confiscated his phone and deleted the video. they tried to say it was illegal to record officers on duty. now the police department says this -- >> well, we looked at an incident that we had at the preakness and we looked at the state law. we wanted to make sure we took a proactive stance. we are probably one of the first 5 departments in the country that put out policies and procedures informing our officers of what these laws are. >> the us, the department of justice and the aclu have all sided with sharp. the battle of maryland's same sex marriage bill will heat up again today. wjz and andrea fujii are live on the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. later supporters will gather again trying to move this bill forward as emotions run high on both sides. opponents of the same sex marriage proposal rallied last month near the state house steps. their message to lawmakers, vote no on the bill. the bill's future rests in the hands of the house of delegates. now lawmakers on both sides. issue are making their voices heard. >> i don't believe that we are going to lose. >> reporter: delegate emmit burns is against the bill. he is also a pastor in baltimore county. he says more religious groups are speaking out against the proposal. >> people are rushing up to me saying we don't want this. >> it is going to be close but i think that we are going to be successful. >> reporter: delegate luke clippinger is one of eight openly gay lawmakers who want same sex marriage legalized. his office is bombarded with phone calls for and against the bill. today he plans to support a rally backing it. he says at least 1000 people are expected. >> it is a sign of a growing support, that we have, on this issue and i think we are going to continue to see that support grow in the days to come. >> reporter: right now house and senate committees are later today the governor of washington state is expected to sign a bill making that the 7th to allow same sex marriage. in italy underwater pumping operations are underway this morning on that wrecked cruise ship. crews began pumping fuel from it yesterday after nearly two weeks of delay because of rough seas and bad weather. a total of 15 tanks are holding 84% of the diesel fuel. crews are working around the clock in hoping of avoiding an environmental disaster. greece's parliament approves a bailout bill that includes harsh austerity measures. we report in the lead up to that vote the country's financial problems spilled out into the streets with more rioting. >> reporter: chaos on the streets of athens, at least 10 buildings went up in flames in protests sunday. tens of thousands of people packed the streets outside the greek parliament building, wading through clouds of tear gas, riot police fired it at protesters throwing stones and petrol bombs, several people have been injured, police formed a par represent to keep the crowd from rushing the building. inside lawmakers debated unpopular austerity measures necessary for a bailout. in exchange the gleek government greek government would have to cut minimum wage and others. the prime minister acknowledged the sacrifices but warned his people without a bailout the country faces a social explosion. greece has been [ singing ] jennifer hudson paid tribute by singing houston's best known song i will always love you. houston was found dead on saturday in the bathtub of her beverly hills hotel room. investigators are waiting for toxicology results to shed light on her death. she was just 48 years old. in washington state investigators searched a landfill for clues in the josh powell case. volunteers spent more than six hours yesterday combing through a huge pile of paper. one sheet at a time. investigators say powell made a trip to that landfill just before he set his house on fire last week, killing his two young sons then himself. the volunteers say they were told to look at everything closely. >> names, addresses, anything that had from utah, anything that would make a connection of some sort. >> detectives did leave with a box full of items but it is not clear how they will factor into that investigation. here a sentencing hearing begins today for a maryland inmate who could be executed for killing a correctional officer,ly was convicted of killing him at the house of correction in jessup. he will choose today whether a judge or jury will decide fate. city police are looking for who is responsible for a fatal shooting in baltimore. kendal state especially was found with multiple gunshot wiewntds, right now no arrests have been made. in annapolis said lawmakers resume debate on a of legalizing same sex marriage. 44% are opposed. on capital hill republican leaders aren't satisfied on the compromise on the president's birth control directive. he pulled back on a plan to require employers, including religious organizations to pay for employee birth control benefits, the revised plan would make insurance companies foot that bill. mitch mcconnell says he will push for a vote on the issue, something the white house has dismissed as something unlikely to happen. >> we have broad consensus, not universal consensus that this is an approach that is right. >> the debate has largely over shadowed his new budget proposal set to be unveiled later this morning. here in baltimore the mayor will talk tough budget issues of her own today when she delivers her state of the city address. it is the first for rawlings- blake as elected mayor. she won a full term after completing the term of sheila dickson. the city is facing tough choices. getting through security at the airport will soon be faster for some frequent flyers. all thanks to a new program starting this year. here is derek valcourt to explain how it works and who is eligible. >> reporter: tsa officials call this a good deal. you sign up and give them information about yourself ahead of time and in return you get to get in the security express lane. getting through airport security usually involves taking off the shoes, the belt, the jacket, in some cases the full body scanners. >> a pain in the neck. >> but they want to make it bearable with their program. they will be able to sign up for a prescreening background check, those who pass won't have to wait in long lines and will get a specially designated lane and go through metal detectors but shoes and jackets can stay on. >> we always reserve the right to be random. >> the program has already been tested in a few cities and this year it will expand to 28 other airports including bwi. >> expanding tsa precheck is about more than just speeding up travel. it is part of a fundamental shift in how we approach aviation security. >> i think it is a great idea. >> especially for people you know that -- like me going to college and back home a lot, it is going to be very convenient. >> while most passengers welcome the change some argue it is trading safety for convenience. >> i don't think anybody should move in haste when it comes to security. >> there is one catch, southwest airlines, which has more flights than any other airline here will not be participating in the trusted traveler program, at least for now. they say always used to have us make our own cards so if you are feeling slightly artie these are some i dead the other day. these are some ideas and things that you could do, but personalizing your gifts and making it something uniquely from you is what we are talking about doing at valentine's this year. >> you yo know what is interesting, you are such an accomplished actress and you are becoming as known for this as an actress. did you intend on this to happen or is it just a wonderful round of applause for your work? >> you know what has happened people have said how many you are and artist and i was an artist long before i was actress and didn't train as an actress so i was doing that long before i was acting and if you look at a lot of artists, a lot of them are great visual artists too and when you have that vision, when you have that way of communicating some times you do it in acting, in dance, in visual art,, in design, in writing in public speaking, if you can sing in singing and writing songs. i think there is a lot of ways of expressing yourselves a someone once said and what happened here is my mom was an amazing inspiration to me and had been through a lot in life and she always said to me when life is is tough and it seals insurmountable the human in instinct is to close off but if you can reach out that act will bring love and purpose into your life and so i kind of connected that as a piece of artwork with two simple hearts that were always open that connected and came up with these ideas for valentine's day cards and then of course here this is one that i just did. you know this is the idea of really personalizing it. >> and open heart isn't just a jewelry design. you also have a foundation by that name. >> we do. the open heart foundation, we had our first event last year and just preparing for another one this year, we honor four people, one of whom is robyn roberts who epitomizes what we mean. she opened up about it on a daily basis while continuing with her job and countless numbers of women realized they could be open about the journey they were going on and realized they could find friends along the way and people they could share
