control, pro-tax increase massachusetts moderate, the less likely it is he's going to win the majority anywhere. >> reporter: as gingrich and romney battle it out for first place here in florida, the other contenders are already looking ahead to the next big contest. >> reporter: rick santorum is expected to campaign in missouri and minnesota today. the former pennsylvania senator canceled stops in florida sunday to be with his 3-year- old daughter who is hospitalized with pneumonia. his oldest daughter elizabeth stood in his place. >> i know he's missing on talking to you but thank you all for coming out. it's just so encouraging to see all of you here. >> reporter: as for texas congressman ron paul, he's bypassing florida all together focusing instead on caucus states like nevada. in tampa, susan mcginnis, wjz eyewitness news. >> santorum now telling supporters his daughter had a rough 36 hours but appears to be improving. bela suffers from a genetic disorder that is often fatal at birth. occupy protesters in nearby washington, d.c. will be evicted from their two major encampments. the national park service distributed flyers over the weekend warning them they have until noon today to remove their tents. anyone who does not comply may be arrested. activists have been camped out at those two parks for about four months now. in annapolis the battle over same-sex marriage will take over starting today as opponents plan a rally for tonight. that comes on the heels of some controversial remarks from the governor's wife. wjz andrea fujii is live on the story. >> reporter: good morning, everyone. governor o'malley is vowing to fight hard for marriage equality while urging people to choose their words carefully after remarks by his wife. same-sex marriage opponents will once again pick up their signs and take their message to annapolis today promising to fight back a bill that would make maryland the seventh state in the country allowing gays and lesbians the full legal protections of marriage. >> we were just talking about people love each -- who love each other. >> reporter: some of those opponents now energized by remarks from first lady katie o'malley. during a speech to a national gay and lesbian group, she called maryland lawmakers who voted against same-sex marriage bill last year cowards. >> there's outrage. >> reporter: delegate don dwyer, a leading opponent of same-sex marriage among those criticizing the first lady who later apologized for her choice of words. and sunday morning her own husband addressing the same gay and lesbian audience said it's important not to let hurtful words enter the debate. >> when this occasionally happens, we must also have the humility and the strength to apologize. >> reporter: o'malley has made same-sex marriage one of his top priorities for the legislative session. a new "washington post" poll finds support on his side. 50% of marylanders say they favor same-sex marriage but 44% oppose it. 6% having no opinion. but opponents are promising a show of force and a fight to the end. >> i truly believe that this bill is not going to succeed. i don't think it's going to come to the house much, andrea. a senate committee is scheduled to is a up the same-sex marriage bill tomorrow. police have identified the man who was hit and killed by a driver going the wrong way in anne arundel county. 55-year-old terry davis from severna park was driving eastbound when a car with three teenagers inside hit him head- on. 19-year-old brittany walker and 18-year-olds bre anna franco and zachary rose all died in the crash as well. >> it was a vehicle that may have been traveling in the wrong direction on 97. at this point that's part of the investigation. we're not sure if that's the same vehicle that of course ended up in this crash. >> it is also not clear at this point whether drugs or alcohol were involved. baltimore city police have their hands full investigating several shootings over the weekend. early yesterday morning a 29- year-old man was shot along the 4700 block in northeast baltimore. he was rushed to the hospital. no word on his condition. just after 8:00 yesterday morning, police were called to the 2800 block of hillen road. there they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to his arm. police say they have made no arrests in either case grz calls for justice -- case. calls for justice and safety him pro.s. a group of residents in perry hall is seeking some answers this morning. as adam may reports, they want information into an accident that left their neighbor dead. >> reporter: a prayer for a fallen friend and neighbor at the scene of a hit and run accident that left beverly moore dead. >> just look around here and you'll know she was thought of. >> reporter: last sunday moore left this house and walked home. when one car stopped to let her cross the street, a driver pulled around the other car striking moore and speeding off. >> i don't understand. i don't understand how somebody can hit a human being and leave them. >> there's a lot of damage that's done here and it's not just to a car. >> reporter: neighbors want baltimore county to make changes to the road or install a speed camera concerned about nearby schoolchildren. >> from standing here, everyone can see that people fly down this road. it's just ridiculous the amount of speed that they do down this road. >> reporter: while this group begins lobbying for the safety improvements, they also want to send a message to the driver at large. >> whoever did this car that hit moore should have visible damage to its front end. friends and neighbors are offering a $500 reward leading to information to an arrest. friends and family of a man gunned down is offering a $10,000 reward. he was shot and killed by two masked men on january 6. police aren't sure if it was a random act or sears had been targeted specifically. anyone with information is asked to call metro crime stoppers. turning to sports, the afc takes on the nfc in the 42nd annual pro bowl in honolulu. raw lewis made his 12th -- ray lewis made his 12th appearance of the game. brandon brazil can release a bushel of soybeans for ten cents, you have to go up against that we're trying to offset that a little bit because we're trying to do beer. >> reporter: a product not normally associated with maryland farms. he's trying to convince state legislators to allow a brewery to be operated on farms. wineries here are thriving. >> there are four vineyards within bike riding distance from this farm here. >> reporter: there's not a whole lot of farmhouse breweries out there right now. unlike farms turning into vineyards making beer means a variety of crops. barley and wheat would be raised which soak up fertilizers before they wash into waterways and the bay. hops would also be raised, a tiny crop in maryland right now but one needed by beer makers worldwide. adam's plan isn't so much to turn a farm into a brewery as it is to brew beer to keep the farm. >> basically create something that's a little more than just a standard farm. give us a few extra advisory. the gerstell academy in finksburg will be opening pro hours late today. the ten people who are dead after a series of crashes along a florida interstate in the middle of the night. now investigators think an arsonist may be to blame. drew levinson has the story for wjz. >> reporter: parts of interstate 75 south of gainesville were littered with the remains of dozens of cars and trucks sunday. what was left of the trailer of this big rig was still on fire. smoke billowing to the sky. the truck behind it and the car in front were smashed up like an accordion. hours earlier in the middle of the night, more than 70 vehicles ran into each other in a series of deadly multicar crashes. dense fog combined with heavy smoke from a brushfire left drivers virtually blinded and defenseless. one woman told the local newspaper that all of a sudden she couldn't see anything and struck a guardrail. her car ended up sideways. she said as she was calling 911, she heard other crashes all around here. >> we had crashes that actually occurred on both north and the southbound side of the interstate in that area the road kind of dips down. it's a low area. >> reporter: police say visibility was so bad that when rescuers first arrived, they found victims by listening for screams and moneys. fire investigate -- moans. fire investigators are trying to determine if an arsonist is to blame for the wildfire that has burned more than 60 acres of nearby prairie land. smoke from the fire along with the fog forced police to close the highway earlier but they reopened it and soon after the crashes began. for much of the day all six lanes of i-75 were closed for miles as investigators removed the wreckage and surveyed the road for damage. drew levinson, wjz eyewitness news. >> in addition to those killed, dozen and a half people were hurt in the crashes. the cruise ship that capsized off the coast of italy is going to take up to ten months to remove. this weekend the 17th body was found on board. 16 remain missing. the rough seas have caused the delay in the removal of the diesel fuel from the ship and the search for those missing has been suspended for the moment. the costa concordia ran aground on some rocks more than two weeks ago. there are some developments this morning in the case of a missing toddler up in maine. 20-month-old ayla reynolds disappeared back in december. her father told police she was simply not in her bed when he went to check on her one night. now police say flood has been found in that home and they confirm some of that blood does belong to little ayla but they're not releasing any more information as of this time. back here police identify a body found in the water in s.a.t. mry's county. 53-year-old -- st. mary's county. 53-year-old leonard barnes was found. he was reported missing just last tuesday. an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death. an investigation is under way after a man's remains are pulled from a well in prince george's county. this weekend the body of 53- year-old lenny harris was recovered from a well behind and unoccupied home in fort washington. harris who disappeared last december was a well known activist in northern virginia. police have not yet released the cause of death in that case. a rally will be held tonight in annapolis for opponents of same-sex marriage. it is an issue hospital this morning after a fight outside an anne arundel county high school. it was on friday two teens were fighting near broadneck high. when police got there, an 18- year-old, one of the participants was having a seizure. he was taken to shock trauma where at our last check he was in serious condition. no charges have been filed against him or the 15-year-old also involved in that fight. baltimore's catholic schools are apparently making a turn around after years of declining enrollments. as gigi barnett reports, the announcement comes at a time when the schools begin a week of celebration. >> reporter: three years ago the baltimore archdiocese shut down several catholic schools. enrollment was down and operating costs were up. the move set off a firestorm of protests and debate. >> i really look forward to coming back here as an alumni. now i won't have that. >> reporter: this week cardinal edwin o'brien talked about the tough choices he made back then. >> i didn't want to do it but i had to do it and very no regrets in doing it. i just wish the circumstances were different. >> reporter: his decision was the recommendation of a blue ribbon committee and the archdiocese says the plan to save remaining catholic schools is working. enrollment has stabilized. so has the budget and catholic schools are now using new techniques to teach. >> it goes back to the faith and that they can celebrate that. >> reporter: robin and mollie attend the immaculate conception school in towson. they want add combination of religion and education for her and a close connection to their parents. >> families that are sending their kids here, they are very involved. we develop great friendships. >> reporter: the afternoon die seize with -- the afternoon die seize says -- archdiocese says enrollment should go up even more. >> the archdiocese kicks off its catholic school week today. it's a time when many parents choose to enroll their students. tens of thousands of people including the entire women's navy lacrosse team joined the polar bear plunge this weekend. it is the 16th year for the plunge which benefits special olympics of maryland. lucky for the participants this year's air temperature wasn't as chilly as years past. the event has already raised over $2.5 million. wjz and the red cross teamed up for a blood drive. it's part of wjz's
