into what was happening with those drugs, after they left this residence. >> reporter: police are also investigating whether this is part of an even bigger operation with more players. as for uni, reason. starting the engines once again. another group is now taking over the organization of the baltimore grand prix. and mary is in the newsroom with the big name heading up this group. >> reporter: worls -- world famous racing champion, michael andretti is now in charge of a new group. the city just terminated the contract with down force racing after it failed to meet several benchmarks. two local men will try to get the grand prix back for labor day weekend. last week was wildly hailed as a success. but the first group that organized the race his its contract terminated for not paying back money it opened to the city. >> the new group is being called race on. the deal needs approval by the city board of estimates. just a short time ago, the jury goes home for the night. once again, unable to reach a verdict in the trial of julius henson. the political operative accused in the election night robocall scandal. derek valcourt explains what happened with the jury today. derek? >> reporter: well, the jury asked really only one question of the judge. they wanted to see if they could get a written copy of the legal instructions that the judge read to them in court. other than that, it was quiet from that jury, still no verdict. >> as democrat martin o'malley and republican bob ehrlich squared off in a 2010 rematch. ehrlich's campaign consultant, julius henson, wrote and sent a robocall to thousands of registered democrats, before polls closed on election night, suggesting there was no need to go vote because o'malley was already winning. >> relax, everything is fine. the only thing left is to watch it on tv tonight. >> reporter: prosecutors argued that robocall was an illegal attempt to suppress african american voter turnout through deceit. and they say the call was misleading because it did not contain the legally required authority line, identifying it was paid for by the ehrlich campaign. >> the first amendment does not protect nod fraud lent speech. we think clearly that was the case here. it was fraudulent. wasn't sphruft political speech. it was fraudulent speech. >> reporter: but henson took the stand to tell them that the call used reverse psychology. meant to get people to vote for ehrlich. and he blamed convicted coconspirator paul schurick for leaving off the required authority tag line. >> it comes down to mr. schurick, in the early campaign, had to -- it was their responsibility, to put an authority line on that call. i recommended that they do so. i went around them to get them to do so. they refused. that is not my responsibility. >> reporter: that jury has already deliberated for about eight hours. that is just about twice as long as the jury deliberated in the case of convicted coconspirator, supports same-sex marriage, is drawing strong praise and criticism. and it could have an impact on the november election. right now, polls show americans are basically split right down the middle on the issue. the obama campaign already released a new ad, accusing mitt romney of being, and i quote, backwards on equality. romney says he believes marriage is between a man and a woman. and this could fire up the conservative base in his favor. >> marylanders on both sides of the same-sex marriage issue are speculating on the impact president obama's support will have, if the issue goes to referendum in november. wjz is live. political reporter pat warren has a look at the impact. >> reporter: everybody has opinions. but of course, at this point, no one can draw conclusions. >> reporter: president obama's support of same-sex marriage puts smiles on the faces of advocates. but does it have any teeth at the polls? >> i think that it may. because it's almost like getting the stamp of approval. you know, it's my president. you know, he added some validity to it. >> i don't think it's going to affect the outcome whatsoever. >> reporter: carey hires and sultan are each in a committed same-sex relationship and believe that the president's influence will influence the maryland referendum. >> if you heard it from the president, how can you say that you're against marriage equality. >> reporter: they still expect same-sex marriage to be defeated in november. >> for those thousands of voting citizens that are writing their plans on these petitions, we don't plan to lose this one. >> i think it will be a wash. >> reporter: some think it will energize both sides. and he believes it is more likely to motivate opponents. >> if i had to guess, i'd say it's a net gain for the conservative forces in maryland, who are going to be slightly more motivated to come out on this issue. >> the petition drive continues, and there is little doubt about the president's sincerity. >> i think people are going to look at the way barack obama came around on the issue of marriage equality. they're going to vay, i sit around with my family. i know gay and lesbian people. i may not have had a discussion about their framly, but i know their family is the same as mine. >> i think he is doing what he thinks is right. >> reporter: the 2kd line to submit the signatures on the congregations offered to provide a funeral for the man accused of the killings. mike hellgren reports from howard county. >> reporter: they came by the hundreds at the funeral to mourn and remember brenda brewington, the mother of two and selfless church administrator, one of two women gunned down one week ago, inside st. peter's episcopal church in ellicott city. >> she died in the process of helping someone less fortunate than herself, someone in great need. and i think it's important that we remember that spirit in her. >> both of the ladies are the kindest ladies you would ever meet. our facebook page has been very busy. >> among the postings around the world, may god bring you comfort and healing. the church is grieving with you. you are all in ply heart and incessant prayers. may god especially give peace to brenda and support to her loved ones. police say douglas jones shot her and mary marguerite cone, before killing himself. wjz has learned jones' life spiraled in recent years. his once-successful business gone. he was homeless, getting food from the pantry at st. peters, and became angry when told his visits were too frequent. >> it was crazy. i don't know what was going through his mind when he was doing it. >> reporter: jones lived behind the church. police say the gun he used in the killing was registered in his name. >> reporter: in their name, several congregations have come together, offering to provide funeral services for jones and counseling to his loved ones. >> in the end, we're a christian church. and that's what christians do. >> reporter: they called cone a woman of profound faith. she was 59. >> the diocese has not yet heard from jones' family on whether or not they will take them up on their offer to provide funeral little bit more than a third of an inch. tim has a look at the current winds which have been a factor all along. >> they certainly have. the low that is responsible for the showers and rains that bob just talked about is moving out. but the high moving in, responsible for the sunshine and blue skies. well, it's creating a bit of pressure between the two. and that's creating the wind. 16-mile-per-hour winds, now around bwi marshall. 22 around d.c. the gusts have been substantially higher. they have been as high as 30 miles per hour around hagerstown. and as you see now, the high is starting to dominate the forecast. and winds are starting to calm down. still a breezy afternoon. and pleasantly cool conditions. normal high now is 72 degrees. we topped out in the upper 60s. we'll be a little warmer tomorrow. we'll call that seasonably milder or so. but it will be that way tomorrow, with less wind and a good bit of sunshine. right on through mother's day. just in time to why the parents of this adorable little girl were told she couldn't fly with them. a state trooper killed off duty. now his killer learns his fate. coming up, a maryland man, accused of spying, locked away in a cuban prison. every day, his wife fights to pring her home. cuba and the world. >> do the right thing. allow him to ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, it is just observe 6:30. 65 degrees and mostly sunny. good evening. thank you for staying with wjz and here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. the man accused of killing a mississippi mother and her daughter, and kidnapping two other youngy girl -- young girls is now part of america's most wanted. >> adam mays could be anywhere in the u.s. right now. >> we believe adam mayes could be anywhere in the united states. and we are extremely concerned for the safety of the girls. >> reporter: the fbi will intensify its search again for adam mayes. he is suspected of killing judge an baines and her daughter adrian in their bedroom. and then kidnapping the other two girls. mayes' mother-in-law says he believed he was their father and was obsessed with them. >> my daughter said he lived, sleeps, eat and breathes nothing but these two children. >> reporter: charges of -- were upgraded to murder for terese a. according to documents, she said both murders were directly part of the kidnapping of alexandria, and caria. and that she drove both bodies to union county, mississippi. that's where mayes was seen last, caught on surveillance video at a convenience store. >> reporter: investigators again searched the area around mayes' mississippi home wednesday but say he could be hiding anywhere am. >> i must emphasize that mayes awps has ties to texas, north carolina, south carolina, florida. >> the reward for information leading to mayes or the girls has grown to $175,000. >> to adam mayess, i would urge you, if you're lessening-- listening, number 1, turn those girls in to a safe location. and then peacefully and safely turn yourself in to law enforcement. >> reporter: now, despite mayes ties, he doesn't have much money. a state trooper working off duty for a family. >> reporter: williams will spend the rest of his life in prison. he was convicted earlier this year in the murder of trooper wesley brown who was shotto death -- shot to death at an appleby's. prosecutors say brown removed him. and williams shot him in revenge. a second man who gave williams the gun will spend five years in prison for his role in the crime. vic? >> mary, thank you. a defense lawyer argued there was not enough evidence to convict williams of the crime. ann arundle county police get into a violent brawl with a suspect believed to be under the influence of drugs. rico smith was acting erratically, they said. when they arrived, police say smith attacked them. trying to disarm one officer, even biting another. they finally used a taser to subdue him. he faces a number of charges. a short time ago, the prosecution wrapped up its case against john edwards. he is accused of violating campaign finance laws to hide his affair. the judge hears about edward' political ambitions. >> reporter: john edwards' former adviser took the stand and testified how edwards angled up for a job, even as he lost the bid to the white house. the candidate asked him to approach the obama campaign about becoming vice president or attorney general. edwards told him that a hillary clinton nomination would be a disaster. henry said edwards' goal was to one day be a supreme court justice. >> he had raw ambition and was constantly in the game, so to speak, to find a role in politics. >> reporter: edwards was accused of scheming to use campaign contributions to hide his affair to rielle hunter. $309,000 in cash went to cars, jets, hotels. >> now, the defense gets to present its case. and the big question. should john edwards take the stand in his own defense? >> if he comes to the jury box with a lot of strikes against him. and sort of asks them to resurrect their own credibility, under these circumstances, will be quite a challenge. >> reporter: for a dramatic closing flourish, prosecutors turn to the words of john edwards himself. they played a tape of a tv interview, where edwards of edwards was radio -- was seen telling lies. the defense will begin its case monday. in greens greensboro, north carolina, wjz eyewitness news. >> edwards could face up to 20 years in prison. investigators are looking into who leaked information of the new bomb plot to the a.p.s. the a.p. waited, trying to give the person who foiled the plot a chance to get out of yemen. a maryland family caught in an international nightmare. allen gross sits in a cuban prison, while his wife tries desperately to get him home. >> reporter: two years, five months, six days. baltimore native allen gross, wastes away behind bars in a cuban prison. >> to see him getting more depressed, weaker. it's a helpless feeling. >> reporter: in a rare video, judy gross shares her deepest fears. she admits, she wors -- worries whether her 62-year-old husband will return home. >> do i think i'll see him on u.s. soil? i doubt it. >> you think he might die there? >> think about it a lot. >> reporter: he went to improve access to students there. >> in your opinion, did allen ever break the law when he was there? >> we know now that he did break cuban law. he did not know that until he got to cuba and was arrested. >> reporter: since allen's arrest more than two years ago, the world's most powerful leaders have been pushing for his relief -- release. but cuba hasn't budged. >> is there anything more you think can be done to help secure his release?
