funneling in. and it is bringing in the gulf moisture and gulf warmth. our heat index tomorrow, with a heat forecast high of 103. the heat intex will be between 105 and 110. cooler air comes after sunday. that will be after the front roll brinks us a chance for thunderstorms. as for where these fall in the record books. we didn't quite make a record today. our forecast, well, we hit 98 degrees, as bob talked about. and then 102 was the high for today. for tomorrow, 103 is our forecast high. and even if we fall just a little shy of that, it will blow the record away. 97, set back in 1987. again, that is going to be something that really will not be a big challenge to hit tomorrow. bob will have your complete updated first warning forecast to talk about when we can see some relief in a round of scorching high temperatures has maryland baking. >> very hot. very -- it can make you tired. you don't want to go outside. >> i just feel like, i could just collapse, it's so hot out here. >> reporter: uncomfortable and deadly for three more marylanders who recently died from heat-related illnesses. a total of 16 so far this year. most of the victims had underlying medical conditions. but health authorities say no one is immune. >> pay attention to it. the types of conditions to look out for are extreme sweating, nausea. headache. cramping. these are the things that if you're feeling those, respond to them right away. >> not only is it potentially dangerous. the heat is also expensive to deal with. bge says even if you never touch your thermostat in the next few days, your next bill will likely be higher. >> if it's 95 degrees outside, your air conditioning unit is going to work harder to maintain that 78 or 80-degree temperature than it would if it were only 85 degrees outside. with so much usage, power outages are widespread. air conditioning is not part of their brutal work day at all. and for those like josiah brooks, keeping cool is a struggle. but it's a identified the two suspects arrested in connection with a deadly shootout at a pikesville hotel. mary is in the newsroom to explain. the men are also accused of being part of a major counterfeiting ring. when police and secret service agents attempted to arrest the men at the ramada inn, they took off on foot. but were arrested a short time later. 31-year-old darrell bacon of randallstown. and 36-year-old dayon barnes are now facing numerous counterfeiting charges. the third man, eric stokes began firing at police. he was shot and killed in the parking lot. barnes has been released on $150,000 bail. denise, back to you. baltimore county police are asking businesses to closely check currency being passed at their locations. questions of cheating tonight. and a baltimore city school. the investigation comes months after a test-tampering scandal at another school. wjz is live at avidson elementary. gigi barnett has more. >> reporter: hi, kai. well, worst test booklets here change. that is the question school leaders want answered. and now they're deep into investigation to find out. perfect test scores last year, among students at bab botston elementary in northeast baltimore, stirred suspicion of city school leaders. to make sure the numbers were acivate, this year -- accurate, this year, they added more monitors during exam testing. now, what they've discovered has led to thoughts of possible tampering. >> you want to make sure your child is learning. and if they tamper with kids' test scores, that's not fair. >> reporter: according to the baltimore sun, the percentage of third graders who aced the straight reading test dropped from 100% in 2009 to 50% this year. math scores also plummeted. about 68% of fourth graders passed the math portion this year. compare that to all of them from last year. the decrease in test scores comes at the same time abbotston and several others were flooded with more monitoring. city school ceo dr. andres alonzo says, we make no judgments and should not reach any conclusions. >> what you are doing here in baltimore is absolutely remarkable. please give yourselves a huge round of applause. >> reporter: last year, u.s. secretary of education, arne duncan made a trip exclusively to baltimore. >> we need to make a point and say, it doesn't matter about poverty, social challenge. our children can be successful. >> reporter: meanwhile, the principal, angela falls is reportedly staying on at abbotston. and some parents, like lorraine moore will, too. >> i don't have a problem with the school itself. but whoever messed with the scores, that's not fair. >> reporter: abbotston is the second city school that is under investigation for possible cheating. they found evidence of test tampering at that school in the spring. back to you, kai, on tv hill. in a statement obtained by our media partner, the baltimore sun, the drop could possibly be portrayed to the two new teachers who aren't yet achieving passing grades. a state worker has been fired for posting information, including social security numbers of nearly 3,000 department clients on a website. the worker, who has not been named, works for the maryland department of human resources. they posted on a website. the employee's motive for posting the information is still unknown. more problems in the coming days for the crews in the gulf. a live look below the surface. all is calm now. but a tropical system is on track to cross over the site of the massive oil spill. as whit johnson reports for wjz, it's not expected to hit until sunday. so cleanup crews are already getting out of the way. almost all of the ships to the side of the oil spill are heading out, as bonnie nears. >> we're first going to start feeling the effects of this very early tomorrow morning, saturday morning. >> the government and bp hope to monitor the well until the last possible second. ships carrying undersea robots that provide video would be the last to leave and the first to return. >> if we have a vessel, the vessels have to depart the scene. and only realtime feedback would be aerial surveillance and the satellite. >> the cap will stay in place despite the storm moving through. the rough waves out in the gulf haven't yet hit the beaches of gulfport, mississippi, where people here are planning for bonnie's arrival. >> we won't panic. we have been through this so many times over the years. >> reporter: bonnie made landfall, south of miami, friday morning. after brushing the bahamas. a storm could strengthen as it heads across the gulf of mexico. it's already stopped efforts to plug the gulf for good. it's also stalling the cleanup at sea, forcing hands of vessels back to port. in gulfport, mississippi, whit johnson, cbs news. >> where is the system now? meteorologist tim williams is tracking the storm once called bonnie. tim? >> well, denise, we followed the storm. moved across broward county, which is the lower portion of florida, the little tip at the bottom there. it triggered the thunderstorms and all kinds of rain. but not really anything too substantial, as it moves on through. now, the storm is very elongated. it lost his tropical storm status, as the 5:00 update from the national hurricane center, bonnie now in depression. still had sustained winds of 35 miles per hour. you do expect any landfalling system to intensify. at 35 miles per hour, which is where it was yesterday, it could definitely intensify again, back up to a category -- actually winds that would categorize it as a tropical storm. that would be 39 miles per hour. again, the storm is expected to impact the oil spill zone, right around the upper northern portion was gulf, right around late saturday night into sunday. we'll continue to keep you posted as it moves on through. back inside. some of the ships involved in the massive well operation are going back to port. others are heading farther south to get out of the path of the approaching storm. frightening moments along the boardwalk. mary is live on what happened. tonight, an investigation is under way, after three young people were injured. the double loop roller coaster at troopers rise at south atlantic avenue in ocean city, will remain closed tonight. state ride safety inspectors continue to investigate what went wrong thursday night, after a cable cracked on the tidal wave roller coaster. shortly after it took off. >> it's like the most thrilling ride. i don't think i want to go on it again. it's a little scary. paramedics took three children between the ages of 10 and 15 to area hospitals. they were shaken. and one had a cut to the hand. according to the online history of the amusement park, the tidal wave roller coaster opened in 1985. and it stands 128 feet tall. no one fell off the ride and all of the injuries are said to be minor. right now, investigators suspect a mechanical failure to be the cause. obviously, there will be inspectors coming to inspect what the cause of this was. and once that determined the appropriate special follow-up. it was open for business today. but again, the roller coaster will remain shut down until this investigation is complete. kai, back to you. if you thought you saw some dolphins in maryland waters this week, you weren't seeing things. volunteers testing water quality, spotted a pod of dolphins in the west river this week. wjz obtained cell phone photos. witnesses say at least a dozen bottlenosed dolphins swam through. later in the day, a few also showed up in the road river. this is the second time the mammals have swam in the area. they can sometimes show up in the chesapeake bay and its rivers during warm weather months. it's probably like a warm bath to them. >> i would think so. suspect began to look around the store. at which time, he grabbed the clerk, took her into a back room, tied her with an electrical cord and sexually assaulted her. >> reporter: he says he owns two shops and the victim, a female friend had only happen helping identity for a few days. others are worried. you should be able to come and go from work and not wor about people attacking you. a shop owner complains there aren't move police patrols. they know and don't show up. >> he says a gate was broken two days ago, leading to the back of his shop and azteca music. there were no other violent crimes but they did have likes like drugs. >> the victim, who is in her 20s, is recovering at home. city police are asking anyone who recognizes the suspect to call the sex offense unit at 410, 396-2076. baltimore county police arrest a suspect in an overnight murder in catonsville. 41-year-old james michael cazzer was found shot inside his home in the 600 block of myers drive. when officers arrived, they found the victim and the suspect inside. caser was rushed to shock trauma, where he later died. the suspect was taken into custody. a motive for the murder is not known. but detectives confirmed the two men did know each other. a family tragedy under investigation this evening in prince george's county. a man died while trying to save his drowning nephew. firefighters responded to an upper marlboro home, where they found the 12-year-old boy, motionless in his neighbor's pool. his 59-year-old uncle was next to him. they were both pronounced dead at the hospital. safety concerns are prompting a grue growing number of states like maryland to focus on mobile phone use behind the wheel. a new technology, called the fdi voice, helps keep hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. in a fast-paced, information-hungry age, the desire to stay connected is high. but keeping tabs with tech continues to be controversial when people do it while driving. yet a new wireless service, north say the maneuvers have brought the region to the brink of explosion. but secretary of state condoleezza rice says the communist country must be punished with new sanctions for dangerous behavior. >> the belligerence, the provocation, the sinking of the south korea ship. north to ka denies having anything to do with sinking the ship. >> we, of course, would welcome the day when there was peace on the peninsula and when leaders of north korea were less concerned with making threats and more concerned about making opportunities. the secretary of state said america is open to talks with north korea but added, it is unlikely to happen any time soon. the united nations says both sides tentatively agreed to meet again. in a statement read out loud in court, fizal shahzad admitted to receiving training in about how to attack america. video shows him shaking and embracing sometime before the failed attack in new york city in may. he said he received five days' training in >> well, talking about the ocean city forecast here. and i'll take it. we are looking at temperatures down on the shore, getting pretty warm very quickly. and the winds tend to shift a little bit. so it may go up to 99 here for a bit tonight. and 97 on sunday with a chance of thunderstorms. then the winds shift. temperatures start to come back down. water temperatures refreshingly in the 73-degree range. we're looking for all of the heat advisories in effect. we're looking at temperatures starting tomorrow around 70 degrees. going right on up to the 80s. to the 90s. by the middle of theidate, we'll be in the 90. and by the meet of the day, we're calling a forecast between 100 and 103. and with the heat index, it's going to feel more like 110 on your skin. bob has a look at your five- day forecast. and what we can expect to see relief. each second, upper 90s. -- even sunday, upper 90s. and chance of storms. 88 monday. 88 tuesday. back up to 90. more humidity wednesday. but we're not talking 100 degrees back in the 60s to low 70s. so finally. very, very nice. dry as well. denise?
