Nine days into the shutdown. I havent seen what they were doing. Fire everybody. And elect people that actually care about what we think and want. An Associated Press poll just released today say 62 of americans blame the shutdown on republicans. About half say president obama. And democrats in congress bear much responsibility as well. Charges are now filed in the death of a 16monthold girl who was in a hot car. Anthony jerome was charged in connection with his granddaughters death. She was found dead in his truck. Police say he was supposed to take the girl to a Head Start Center in baltimore county, but instead, went home and went to sleep, leaving the child inside the truck. Derek val court has more on what happened and the accidents impact. A huge inconvenience for drivers. Traffic in both directions of 295 had to be shut down as police investigated this accident. The traffic backed up for miles during the height of the morning rush hour. U. S. Park police who investigate accidents on the road say a driver traveling on the parkway struck and killed a pedestrian. Its unclear why the man was in the highway. Police say the driver who struck him did stop and waited for please. Investigators say the man was hit, following another accident on the same highway. Were still trying to determine exactly what happened. There seemed to have been an accident northbound. And then the subject was struck southbound. Authorities have not yet released the name of the identity of the person struck as they look to identify him. Shut down nearly five hours as accident investigators try to piece together what happened. It was 10 00 in the morning before all lanes were reopened to traffic. Derek valcourt, wjz Eyewitness News. The tough morning commute also included an overturned trailer past the bw parkway. Four virginiabased sailors appeared in connection with the training accident of a diver. The four appeared this morning each was charged with dereliction of duty. Drowned while driving at the super respond. The four sailors charged were members of the same unit. Several trials are scheduled for january. In august, five sailors were given punishment. In connection, four of those refused to accept that. Three of the sailors face a maximum of three months confinement and restriction of bay. This case has received national attention. Baltimore cardiologist, dr. Mark meday, accused of performing unnecessary procedures. Today, he finally takes the witness stand in what would be the largest of those suits. Wjz is live. Alex demetrick is back. Well, kai, most of the 250 suits brought against mede were brought earlier. But this could be the single largest financial penalty if he loses. Reporter expanding clogged arteries with stents saved lives. That was his specialty. Until they notified a number of patients their stents may not have been necessary. Dr. Medee said it was 90 . And after they reviewed everything, it was 10 . The percentages refer to blockages and blood vessels. The higher the number, the greater the need for a stent. Medee settled cases out of court and lost his license to practice. Now hes on the witness stand, fighting a suit in court. Glen says his stent was unnecessary and will cost him at least 50 million when he cut back. In court, winebergs lawyer questioned medees treatment. Im there to increase the likelihood, hes going to be alive. A defense hes raised in the past. What i did, is something i would want for myself. For my mother and father, they were treated appropriately. And with the highest regard for their well being. Dr. Medee has always maintained his innocence. The lawsuit is being heard by a jury and could take weeks to conclude. Alex, thank you. This may not be dr. Medees last trial. Other suits are still pending. These are the years when pimlico elementary and middle school were built or expanded. This clock stopped long ago. Time has not been kind to these buildings. All right. Heres two more. Reporter theyre now planning for a new or rebuilt pimlico. Its among the first of 137 city schools to be recreated. At the beginning of this process, the wisdom of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. What were doing right now is inspecting the school. Not really asking them to do our job for us, as much as have them help us open our minds and open their minds to what the layout of the school could possibly be. Reporter asking for such help has paid off on previous projects. Theyre then able to come up with ideas that typically arent built built verbatim. But help push us closer. For the kids, theyre surprised that solving such practical problems mirrors such classwork. This is common core. These buildings may be torn down and replaced by new. Or they may be remodeled. At first glance, this architect feels the oldest should be saved, the newest renewed. Addition through subtraction, we like to call it. Here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. Two Baltimore Area post Office Managers are charged with running a scam. Using their jobs to bilk the Postal Service out of tens of thousands of dollars. Wjz is live. Investigator Mike Hellgren explains how this plot works. Hi, kai. They would approve huge contracts for Maintenance Work at the waverly and pikesville locations. One of them was for almost half a million dollars. And then the government says they would take kickbacks. Reporter the grass is high at the post office in the waverly neighborhood of north baltimore. And weeds grow at the pikesville branch, despite the thousands of dollars spent on landscaping contracts, authorized by the branch managers. Kimberly parnell and Richard Wright iii. The federal government elgas much of the work was never done and parnell and wright would instead, pocket check after check in bribes from the contractors, more than 50,000, until the government caught on to their scheme. Its costing money. And the lack of integrity in the public office. Post master wright was offended, saying i need my loot. Reporter the manager here at the post office in pikesville admitted she was scared she would get caught. With the post office struggling already financially. This frustrates customers. You have a decent job and decent salary and you want to cheat under the table. Its ridiculous. Most of the Postal Service workers are probably just fine, honest and hard working. Reporter the u. S. Attorney tells wjz, the Postal Service attorney general is aware of the investigation. You have people with a decision to spend government money. Federal prosecutors have also charged two others who were part of the scream. At least one person has died vic is in the riewz zoom with more. Dozens of passengers are hurt. Four of them critically. Police say the bus ran into the back of the tractortrailer in white deer. The driver of the truck shares his frightening experience. Everybody crawling out of windows. And the bus driver screaming. The bus vivor said he was not hurt the driver of the gray hound bus had to be extricated from her seat. The cause of the crash is under investigation. In the 70s when i started, i knew that we are going to run out. That is dr. Jonathan yo harand a group of other scientists to create their research center. It is a fish farm that is completely green and self sustaining. All of the solid waste is being removed, collected and converted to fuel grade methane. To biofuel. A short time ago, a new York City Police detective is arraigned for his suspected role in the motorcycle gang assault caught on videoment vinita nair reports for wjz, Police Identified the undercover cop as the one seemingly smashing the rear window of the suv. Undercover new york police detective, voycheck broscheck was arraigned on charges for his role in the attack on an suv driver. Prosecutors say a separate video shows the offduty detective, kicking the range rover, and smashing the rear window before bikers pulled out the driver and attacked him. They say the bikers terrorized the driver and his fam and the detective never did anything to stop the attack. Prosecutors say he was never more than 10 feet from the victim. Broscheck is one of several new york officers, suspected of rioting with a pack of motorcycles the day of the assault. You have another undercover officer from the interral affairs division. You have two officers identified as being there, but not necessarily in the assault, maybe somewhere earlier. And you have yet one more after that. Broscheck initially told investigators he had nothing to do with the assault. A suspect was also arraign said. The driver of the suv had not been charged for running over and possibly paralyzing one of the drivers. His wife who was in the vehicle with their 2yearold daughter, said he was just trying to protect his family. Vinita nair, wjz Eyewitness News. What a preschooler is accused of bringing into the classroom in philadelphia. ,, drugs in school. Eight bags of crack cocaine. And police say he was showing it all off to classmates. Elena diaz reports. School is supposed to be a safe haven. But moms were picking up their little ones early, after a classmate, a 4yearold boy, brought 173 and eight bags of cocaine to school. And caused students to be evacuated from their class. Im shocked that a kid was able to bring drugs to school. But its not really surprising with the drug epidemic in the city. We were concerned when we heard a prek child. Police tell us around 10 00 tuesday morning, the 4yearold was showing off his cache. They told the teacher. And the child reached into his pocket and pulled out a quantity of narcotics. K9 dogs sniffed the drugs but found nothing else. The School District says the boy is a victim, but glad to hear he was safe. If a child were to digest Something Like that, it would become quite fatal for them. So its very disconcerting. Now theyre trying to figure out who gave him the cash and drugs. We cant charge a 4year old, but if we can find out who was in possession of the narcotics. Two post Office Managers are charged with running a scam, using their jobs to bilk the Postal Service out of tens of thousands of dollars. Wjz is live.
