Videotaped police interrogation, karla porter repeatedly lied about her involvement in the murder of her husband ray, at first, blaming a robber. But eventually, she confessed to planning his assassination. I just wanted somebody to hit him. I didnt want this to happen, i really didnt. What happened, karla . He was just being really mean. Reporter porter now admits she enlisted the help of several people, including members of her family, to hire hitman Walter Bishop to kill her husband in front of her, in 2010, at this hess gas station on joppa road. Everybody said what a wonderful man. I didnt want you to know that he did hit me sometimes. Reporter karla porter took the stand thursday to detail years of physical and verbal abuse, she says she suffered at the hand of her husband. She said he kicked, threw things at her, slammed her head and held a gun to her head, threatening to kill her. Porter said she lived in constant fear. It was getting so bad, i knew ray was going to kill me. I just wanted on to kill him first. Reporter late tonight. Ray and karla porters daughter took the stand, saying she witnessed her father verbally abusing her mother. Prosecutors suggesting that daughter is simply trying to help her mother out. If convicted issue they could face up to 20 years in prison. Three people died in the april 15th bombing. And more than 260 others were hurt. This is the first day that this is officially open, black tip reef. 700 different animals in here. 65 different species and one exciting afternoon. Five, four, three, two, one. [ cheering ] reporter the mayor and aquarium ceo float into shark infested water for the official ribbon cutting. It warms my heart. Im excited to be here. Black tip reef is really one of the first major enhancements to the aquarium in a number of years. And it just felt right to do it on our birthday, our 32nd anniversary. Reporter the grand opening today are black tip reef is full of light, color and movement, right in the heart of National Aquarium. Seeing it looking so beautiful is a nice edition. Thats crush. That is crush, isnt it . Reporter the new exhibit is home to a 518pound sea turtle, sharks, sting rays, and hundreds of brightlycolored fish, from awcht rail ralian and indonesian australian and indonesian water. Its exciting for us to be able to see this and see all of this oh, my goodness, anna reporter the indoor salt water tank is a coralfilled exhibit. An exact replica of the indo pacific reef. The staff spent 18 months constructing replicas of nearly 50 different species of coral. Then painting them the same hue you might find in the great deep. Reporter okay, guys. 3,000 different pieces of coral. And it looks real. I mean, its really incredible. Ill explain how they did all of this. Thats going to come up in just a little bit. But its kind of cleared out a little wit. Getting later in the afternoon bit. Getting later in the afternoon. Absolutely jampacked. As they did the ribboncutting ceremony. Alex demetrick reports, it was a crime that went unsolved for two decades. Reporter bobby jarrett, jr. , carried photos of his mom, himself and his young are brother to court. He was 10 years old when christine went missing. 21 years later, police found her body, buried under floor boards in concrete. His father was convicted in seconddegree murder, in what the jury viewed as an unplanned act of rage. His son said, when my father took my mothers life, he took what michael and i could have been. The 21 years has played a starring role in many night terrors, where i wake up screaming. It was very difficult to write that impact statement. Because its been 21 years and, you know, we had to really look back at our entire lives and just just realize the manipulation and the diseetd deceit through all of these years. Reporter jarretts lawyer argued that he was a good father to the boys. But the judge didnt see it that way. Saying, i think mr. Jarretts conduct was only to help one person. Him. He is a monster, hiding in human skin. The defense believes the judges punishment was made for the wrong reasons. I think yet didnt sentence for the crime but for the way she was disposed of. A military judge rules two attorneys, helping nidal hasan cant drop out of the case. Reporter well, kai, hassans courtmartial came to an abrupt halt when his stand by attorneys asked to be pulled from the case. The lawyers claim hassan is trying to get the death penalty. And say they will not help him be a martyr. Hassan is representing himself in opening arguments admitted he was the gunman in the shooting. The judge ruled the Defense Attorneys are required to stay on the case. The lawyers are planning to appeal, claiming the judge is forcing them to violate professional rules of conduct. If convicted, hassan will face the death penalty. Stranded in kenya, a massive fire at the Nairobi Airport trapped nearly a dozen marylanders on a aide trips toaf rica. Today, International Flights resumed. But still could take days for some of tome get them. Forcing the suspension of International Flights and choking a travel gateway. A new exhibit at the National Aquarium here in baltimore comes to life. It is the Worlds Largest reproduction of the pacific coral reef and features sharp toothed friends. Wjz is live. And which one you think is faux. Or we were saying faux real. Any real guesses . This is the real one. And it very heavy. So im going to pass it off to my trusted assistant, sandy freeman. And this is faux but youd never it. Its absolutely beautiful. Ill tell you how they made these. Its a resin. And they put it in the mold and peel it off. So take a look at this. [ music ] reporter as the crowd looks on, one by one, blacktipped sharks are welcomed to their new home in the National Aquariums black tipped reef. Its quite a process of getting the sharks in animal care facility. Reporter for the past several months, 20 blacktipped sharks have been living in an offsite facility, preparing to move to the new exhibit. We have to make sure that they are comfortable, that they acclimate well and are looking great and feeding great before we introduce them to the public. Reporter hundreds of species of join the sharks. A lengthy process that requires a lot of planning and observation. When you have a tank that has little tiny fish and big sharks, you want those little fish to go in first and find a secure spot. Then you put some bigger fish in, leading on up to the sharks. We put Silicone Rubber on this. And we make a mold. Reporter blacktipped reef is a complex ecosystem that looks just like the real indo pacific reefs. How similar is what were going to see at the aquarium, to the natural habitat . I would say if you looked at a picture of the Great Barrier reef, youre degree to say its going to say its spot on. 3,000 different types, to be exact. [ applause ] [ music ] it took two days to get the blacktipped sharks into their new home. A 13,000 squarefoot tank. Incredible view of the world down under. Okay. So just to show you again how this works. This is that mold i was talking about. And when you peel it off, a beautiful faux coral in ravens purple. Doesnt get any better than this, guys. And i think whats so cool about this is i got to learn all about this. Mary bubala actually had to put on that tight scuba gear and get in here and swim with turtles. What jessica is doing inside. What were doing outside. It just feels tropical. Out here, the dew point is high, which always gives you that tropical feel when the humidity levels go up. And because of that tropical feel, weve decided to update you on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration noaas updated prediction on the tropics. Things are expected to heat up here soon right smack in the middle of the season now. Between the middle of august and middle of october is when it starts to heat up. Noaa has updated their prediction. We are expecting now from noaa, that the season will be active. There is about a 70 chance of the season becoming above normal. Which for us means there should be roughly 13 to 19 named storms. But of those, 6 to 9 of them will become hurricane. And 3 to 5 of them are expected to be major hurricanes, which is category 3, 4 or 5, with winds greater than 111 miles per hour. Of course, well be able to keep you posted. Our new wjz mobile weather lab will be able to take you on location in any place where we need to report from the scene and give you ideas on the current conditions. Hopefully were not talking damages. But certainly, we could be weathering some of those tropical storms as they make their way into the region. Well keep you posted. And Baltimore County is no exception. Thats why theyve spent millions of dollars to keep guns out and kids safe. Reporter on the first day of school last year, shots rang out at pery hall high school. First shots went off. And nobody knew what it was. And i turned arngd and saw around and saw him holding the shotgun. Reporter the suspect, robert gladden, jr. His victim, daniel borowy. We have two School Resource officers who have the capability if we need them to, to wand the student if we feel there is something on them. Reporter Baltimore County spent 3. 7 million to install new security measures like this Monitoring System that will be in effect the first day of school. Perry hall high school, as well as other schools across the county have a new buzzer system, and mandatory checkin procedure, in which visitors to the school have their ids scanned. By the first day of school, everything the be in process. Reporter they say gun safety starts at home. The gun used by gladden, taken from his father, was not in a safe. School administrators say paying attention to social media is also crucial. On the first day of school, gladden wrote, first day of school, last day of life. He has taken every precaution. Starting off in the 70s tomorrow. About 70 degrees or so. Well get into the mid80s. Again, the dew point will be high. Another afternoon where storms could be firing up. And well taper off back into the low 80s to the 70s tomorrow. Evening, heading into the overnight hours. Back into 75 degrees. Next five days, we send it in to bob. Looks like a pretty good shot today. And again, we could see heavy downpours. We expect to see dryer air in on saturday. Showers will stay south of the city. 88. Same thing for sunday and monday. We may get a shower back here monday. 85, 87, 86. Again, tuesday night. Maybe some scattered showers. Heading down to the beach. A new round of crash test finds many small cars dont perform well on frontend collisions. Marlie hall reports for wjz, only one model received the top ranking of good from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Reporter the honda civic earned the top safety rating in a new kind of crash test. For the first time, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety conducted what it calls small, overlap crash tests. To see how the front corner of small cars holds up during a collision. That area isnt always designed to absorb a crashs impact. David zuby says this type of collision causes 25 of serious injuries in frontal crashes. We still end up killing close to 9,000 people every year in frontal crashes. So this is one of the remaining problems. Reporter the dodge dart, ford focus, hyundai elant ra, and scion tc all received acceptable reatzings. Ratings. But some popular models did not do well in the safety evaluation. Chevrolet sonic, volkswagen beetle, chevrolet cruze, nissan sentra, kia soul and kia forte, all received marginal or poor ratings. But they say drivers of those cars should not be too concerned. All of the cars we tested today are very safe cars by virtue of the tests we have been running for a number of years. The Toyota Corolla was not tested because the new version is coming out in the fall. A longdistance swimmer finishes a twomile workout in michigan while pulling a ton of bricks. It was all for awareness for habitat for humanity. The swimmer pulled inflatable boats filled with bricks and swam alone. It took more than 50 hours to finish that swim. Wow. Thats impressive.
