not returned calls to eyewitness news. >> a promising coppin state university student murdered. tonight, police say he was stabbed to death, all because of video games. weijia jiang just spoke to the victim's mother about an arrest in the case. weijia? >> reporter: kai, the victim's mother and father are actually sitting right behind me on the porch. they say it's very difficult for them to go inside their home, where the father found the body. and as you can imagine, they have very harsh words for the man just arrested for the murder. >> reporter: 18-year-old jalma blackwell was studying to be a nurse at coppin state university. but she was murdered inside her parents' row home. wednesday evening, police arrested abdullah with her murder. they say he stabbed her 30 times. >> he brutalized my daughter, for no reason. she is a peaceful child. and he took away a jewel from us, for noreason. >> reporter: for the first time since losing her daughter, blackwell's mother talked with us about the horrific details. just-released documents show that abdullah admitted to stabbing her over games. he sold the items at a pawn shop. >> she could have been frightened and the video games still could have been taken. her life was not worth that. i believe it was more a personal issue as to why this predator did this to my daughter. >> reporter: court records show abdullah has a long criminal history. most recently, in 2008 he was charged with rape, sodomy and assault. but his case was placed on an inactive document and never prosecuted. >> weijia, thank you. abdullah is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing next month. crime at the u.s. naval academy. tonight, a midshipman is accused of raping a classmate. vic is live in the newsroom with details on this. vic? >> reporter: the navy just announced several charges against 19-year-old patrick edmond, including rape, and issuing a false statement. the investigation began after a female midshipman accused him of assaulting her. tonight, the school released a statement, saying it's providing a personal advocate and counseling to the victim. mary? >> okay, vic. thank you. edmonds' hearing is scheduled for monday morning. >> we're following a developing story. police say a 3-year-old child fell out of a third story apartment. according to family members, the boy pushed the screen out of an open window, met at johns hopkins, where he's currently being treated. we're working to find out the child's condition. members of the controversial westboro baptist church. the group that normally targets military funerals, focused instead on maryland's school children. >> the dawn didn't exactly come up like thunder at fort meade, but it sounded like it. members of the american leegdz rider -- lesion ride -- legion riders tried to brown drown out the westboro baptist church. >> god hates america! america is doomed! >> reporter: only a handful of the kansas group showed up while hundreds of protestors turned out. the counter protests came in response to the church targeting students at fort mead middle and high schools. an extension that they believe that god is targeting them. >> these children have been lied to all of their lives. they have been taught that god is a liar and that his commandments are at disposal. when they were taught sodomy was an abomination, they have been caught that is a lie. >> are you idiots? >> i think it's outrageous that they're doing this. they know that it's just for attention. they know that they not going to change anything. >> reporter: police and the superintendent had two weeks to prepare for the group. >> told them about the road closures police decided to put in place. told them about the diverted buses. we have students who walk arundel county earlier this month of course officials say it was caused by a brief tornado april 5th. bob has more on the first warning weather center. you might remember how warm the weather was monday. created a very weak tornado. it was in this sherwood manor in patuxent neighborhood. it was 1.3 miles long. with winds about 50 miles an hour. but they ranked it f0. no major damage. and this is tornado season. when we open up way to the west, another system developing. that will bring us clouds and yes, rain here. but not until saturday. so another halfway decent day coming up. a shakeup at the federal aviation administration. the man who oversees this follows our design, following our report of tower control, falling asleep on the job. sandra hughes has the latest for wjz. the country's air traffic system is getting a top-to- bottom review. the head of the country's air traffic system has resigned. a controller fell asleep in the tower in reno and did not answer a question for an emergency landing. >> we have a pretty sick patient and need to land. >> the plane landed without any assistance. >> i want the public to know we're not sitting around trying to make excuses. we've stepped up. we've added more staff. and i believe personally that this is an outrageous situation that will not stand on my watch. >> reporter: the faa is now increasing staffing in 27 airport towers. the burbank airport in california is one of the 27 airports that will add an air traffic controller overnight to make sure there are always two people in the tower. >> well, i think it's a tough job. backup sounds like a good idea. >> i think the person that was falling asleep should be fired. and they should get somebody who doesn't fall asleep. >> reporter: the burbank airport does not allow commercial flights to land between 10:00 at night and 7:00 in the morning. but private and cargo planes are allowed. one says the faa is misdirecting resources and that extra tower operators gunfight and a high-speed police chase. all part of a wild scene that started in dundalk and ended in baltimore city. derek valcourt explains how the violence unfolded. >> reporter: police believe this all began with an argument between a group of students at dundalk high school earlier in the day. police say they took their arguments to the streets and gunfire followed. >> reporter: dozens of squad cars converged at northern parkway and reisterstown road. wjz there as two men inside a black camaro are arrested, marking the end of a lengthy police chase that began in baltimore county. police believe the men inside that camaro were involved in the shooting of three teenagers in the turner station neighborhood of din balk -- dundalk, where residents heard multiple gunshots. >> how many do you think you heard? >> 15. >> reporter: the gunfire happened around 8:00 last night. >> we heard just bang, bang, bang. so we came out. and walked down there. we get down to the corner. and this guy comes out of the corner, shooting out into the air. >> i saw the guy. he was on foot. and i saw him shooting at everybody. >> reporter: police say one of their officers who was on the way to the crime scene here at turner station saw that black camaro on the road and the chase began. >> reporter: city police officers pursued. one city officer was injured in the chase and and had to be taken to an area hospital. the three victims all expected to survive. but neighbors, left frustrated that it happened in an area where children were playing. >> when he started shooting, he was just right out in the open. no regard to anybody standing around. nothing. >> thank god my kids robot standing in this -- aren't standing in this area. by the time this was happening, it would be out stories people are talking about tonight. a dramatic fire rescue in baltimore county, an essex teenager saved his little brother and grandfather from a burning home. suzanne collins speaks with the family about how it happened. >> the fire started downstairs. so 15-year-old charlie nicely was the first to notice. his grandmother, who had the boys for the night, let him sleep on the couch to watch the o's game. >> it felt a little hot. so it was like, i heard a sizzling noise. so i woke up. and it was kind of like you could see the smoke and everything. so i started yelling for him. and nobody was answering. >> reporter: charlie awakened the others. his 10-year-old brother jumped into his arms from the second floor. his grandparents got to safety. >> as soon as they jumped, just burst out in the house. and flames started coming from left and right. >> the boys' father left to the scene, not knowing the fate of his own children or his wife's parents. >> i think i ripped the skin off the bottom of my feet. i ran down the street, and as soon as i turned the corner, i could feel the heat off the house. >> reporter: when the father arrived at the neighbor's home, everyone was safe there. the family lost another grandparent recently. >> i'm proud of him. my father just passed away. and he said that he woke him up and told everybody to wake everybody up and get them out of the house. >> his father says he now knows his son is a man and could take care of all three of his little brothers had f he -- if he had to. >> the grandparents will be okay. mary faulkner has leg injuries after jumping from a window and the grandfather is getting oxygen. >> i'm proud of my nephew. if it weren't for him, you know, they wouldn't be be here. >> reporter: suzanne collins, wjz for this very precious story. the trial begins today for three baltimore police officers, accused of kidnapping two teenagers. milton smith, tyrone francis and gregory helis, are charged with kidnapping the teens in may of 2009 in separate incidents. they left one toon in -- teen in east baltimore and the other in howard county. state's attorney greg bernstein is prosecuting the case. and it's his first since taking office in january. the search for a possible victim of a serial killer resumes today on long island. today, the fbi joined in on that search. denise is in the newsroom with the latest. >> they go on board with high- tech imaging aircraft. they search for skel skeletal remains. divers are also searching the water surrounding the barrier island. no suspects have been identified. but now, a profile of the suspected serial kill are is -- killer is emarriaging. -- emerging. they say he is likely a white male, intelligent and street smart. they have not ruled out the possibility that more than one killer could be responsible. >> investigators hope the dna evidence will help them identify the body so they can try to determine their last whereabouts. a cheating boyfriend might have led a new york mother to drive her minivan into the hudson river, killing the three children. lachandra johnson told her three children, we're going to die together, as they sat in the back seat of her sinking mini than. that's when her 10-year-old son managed to escape through a window. a woman walking by screamed for help. >> my mom drove into the car with my baby sister and two brothers. tears on his face. it was something i will never forget for the rest of my life. >> reporter: armstrong was involved in a domestic dispute minutes before the tragedy. police think she was distraught after learning the child's father was cheating. katherine zeta-jones is being treated for bipolar disorder. this announcement comes after a very difficult year for the acfres. actress. actress. >> oscar winner katherine zeta- jones seems to have a solid marriage. wealth, solid marriage to actor michael douglas, but none of that could have protected her from a stressemp year -- stressful year. and it has been a stressful year. in august, her husband, michael douglas was diagnosed with stage four throat cancer. >> i'm doing everything i can. >> reporter: with zeta-jones by his side, he battled back. and is now tumor-free. last april, her 31-year-old step son, cameron douglas, was sentenced to five years for drug charges, despite her begging for leniency. in the f150 pickup trucks. trucks from the 2004 to 2006 model years are impacted in this. safety reg -- regulators say the air bags can go off unexpectedly. the budget bill that would fund the bill is making ask for sack sacrifices from everybody, except for the 2%. americans who are doing beforts. >> but the republican who put his party's budget together says politics are getting in the way of progress. gain of 14 points. the s&p grew a fraction as the nasdaq lost a point. home foreign closures are picking up again realty track says banks foreclosed more. homes receiving their first default notice jumped 16%. foreclosures had dipped in recent months, while lenders delayed processing them. and the government is trying to correct one of the greatest injustices in air travel. right now, airlines are not required to refund the fees they charge for checking a bag, even if they lose it. the transportation department is now trying to force carriers to pay up if they lose their stuff, even if it's >> bob. thank you. a man from southwestern turkey is lucky to be alive after a large metal structure nearly crushes him. look at this. when winds of up to 31 miles an hour lifted it from the ground and sent it flying towards him. amazingly, the man only suffered minor injuries. >> wow. world leaders gathered in berlin in cairo today to discuss the ongoing crisis in libya. they're seeking an end to the violence but rebels say government attacks on civilians are intensifying. charlie dag ardad -- d'agata has the latest for wjz. >> moammar gadhafi rode in an open car. they say the trip took place thursday, during a nato air attack. to the east, in misrata, libyan rebels say this is the damage left behind, after government forces shelled the port city. they say a rocket attack killed 23 civilians, mostly women and children. residents worry an even bigger massacre will follow, if nato does not step up attacks on gadhafi's forces. britain and france are calling on nato to do just that. but not all members are making the same push. secretary of state hillary clinton is urging nato to stay united. >> we are also sharing the same goal, which is to see the end of the gadhafi regime in lib ja. -- libya. >> reporter: nato foreign ministers are meeting in berlin to discuss foreign and other issues. nay say its top priority is avoiding civilian casualties. >> this is in stark contrast to pro gadhafi forces whom we have seen attack civilians repeatedly. >> reporter: the crisis in libya is also on the agenda at a conference in cairo. united nations secretary general says gadhafi has lost all legitimacy, after killing his own people. >> this is totally unacceptable. >> reporter: neighboring countries are calling for an immediate cease-fire. so aid groups can deliver food and water to the people who need it most. charlie d'agata, wjz eyewitness news. >> reporter: the libyan government claims nato air strikes have killed dozens of innocent civilians. >> five people die after a fire rips through an apartment building in perris. police say four of the victims die when they jumped out of the windows, trying to escape the flames. 57 people were hurt, including a firefighter who fell from a ladder. the cause of that blaze is still under investigation. a dramatic rescue was made possible by the quick thinking of the person in trouble. 93-year-old john collins ended up off the road and in a canal. collins popped the trunk, which stopped it. very smart. rescuers arrived and were able to look for safety. the former president is recovering at the hospital. a witness to a car crash in california records a drunk man offering another man a driver a bribe to forget about the accident. >> can i just give you cash, bro? i'll give you $6,000 cash right now. i really don't want to call the -- i don't want to go to jail, bro. i'm drunk. >> there you go. the man who recorded the conversation said he did so because he has seen so many hit- and-run accidents. he said the person who offered the bribe went into a house and never returned. a police report was filed. police in pennsylvania make a sweet arrest after surveillance video captures a late-night feat. the man is seen walking past a closed store and seen again with a tray of doughnuts taken from a lock the cooler. the man was recognized because he lives next door. and police found the doughnut buffet in his house. he pleaded guilty and paid a fine. embarrassing moment for joe bideeb, when -- biden when it looks he was napping on camera. what makes it embarrassing is it was apparently during president obama's budget speech. again, talking about those numbers can make anyone feel sleepy, we imagine. the vice president's office did not comment on the napping gate. >> does he wake up ever?
