[ cheering ] >> reporter: but to be the best, douglas had to train with the best. >> she would just do these perfectly straight cartwheels. >> reporter: her mom showed home movies in this procter & gamble ad. showing olympic prowess at 2 years of age. she moved 1200 miles away from family to mold her raw talent in iowa. at one point, the homesickness was almost too much. but douglas's mom wouldn't let her give up. >> mom, you're supposed to be on my side on this one. you're supposed to let your baby come home. but she was just like, nope. she told me, life is not easy. you have to fight and just refuse to quit. >> reporter: that determination helped catapult her to the top. douglas cried thursday as she was declared the winner. coming up at 5:00 and 6:00, we talk to local gymnasts about gabby's inspirational story. right now, the search continues for the armed gunman who abducted vi ripken. today, the hall-of-famer speaks out for the first time about his mother's kidnapping. mike hellgren has more from camden yards. >> ripken said he didn't find out his mom was missing until someone spotted her car in baltimore county. he said he drove around himself, looking for her. and he's now just grateful she was found safe. >> it was the worst feeling you could imagine. >> reporter: orioles' great cal ripken, junior, is breaking his silence about the abduction of his 74-year-old mother vi. he believes it was premeditated. >> obviously there is some thought given to it. the materials used to bind her were brought there. so there is a lot of evidence that shows that there was somewhat of a plan. >> reporter: his first comments comes just days after police release surveillance video of the man they believe abducted ms. ripken from her garage, tied her up and drove her around central maryland for almost a day in her lincoln town car, before dropping her off back in aberdeen a few doofers from her home. he said she is not yet staying there. >> i think she really doesn't want to be affected by this. she wants to return to the same, full, joyous life she had before. >> police are declining to say the store, even though there there is a prominent wal-mart logo in it. and they won't say what happened to vi ripken during those many hours she was held at against her will. neither did her son. >> i think some of the details i can't really discuss because they do lend itself to the investigation. in many ways, i'm thankful, she was always treated pretty civilly. >> reporter: ripken says he does not know whether the abductor knew who his mom was. he said she has tried to get back to her regular routine, going to the beauty parlor and getting back to her beloved iron birds. >> ripken said he spoke publicly because he wanted to keep the interest high. the fbi is also involved in the investigation. gay rights organizations are promoting a national same- sex kiss day. gigi barnett has more on today's demonstrations at chick- fil-as across the country. >> reporter: the idea is to protest comments made by the restaurant's owner, when he spoke out against same-sex unions. this comes after chick-fil-a president dan cathy told the press that his company supports, quote, the biblical union of the family unit. there is support for cathy. yesterday was chick-fil-a appreciation day. customers showed up in mass at more than 1600 restaurants across the country. and not all gay rights groups are protesting chick-fil-a. garden state is calling today's demonstration shallow. >> the cathy family says it has never hidden its southern baptist faith, even closing its restaurant on sundays. a surprisingly strong jobs report sends socks soaring on wall street, breaking a four- day losing streak. the dow is up nearly 200 points and is back above the 13,000 mark. the s&p and nasdaq also post big gains. alexis christoforous reports for wjz when the new report from the labor department on the hot july job market. >> reporter: private companies broke a 4-month slump and added 163,000 jobs last month. that's the biggest hiring wage since february. but the overall jobless rate inched up to 8.3%. that's because more people are looking for work. the government doesn't count people who are out of work as unemployed unless they're trying to find a job. this sent the stock markets soaring, ending a four-day skid on wall street. >> the focus now is on job creation. >> trader doreen wants the feds to hold off on plans to jump start the economy. >> i think this will give them more time before they need to act. >> reporter: many were seasonal jobs. the skittish economy is making many business owners hesitant to hire full-time workers. >> it's been up and down, up and down. >> reporter: wayne zapper's family makes billboards and 58. not quite to the 3,000 mark. the state fire marshal is trying to figure out what sparked a fire at a harford county denny's restaurant today. some customers were forced to abandon their food when flames broke out just after 11:00 this morning at the denny's on edgewood road in edgewood. took firefighters about 45 minutes to get it under control. one customer was taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation. it is a humid august afternoon. here's a live look outside. there are some storms around maryland. wjz has weather and traffic together. bob turk is here with the updated numbers stronger, bigger area of showers and storms, moving pretty much toward frederick right now. so southern frederick county area, look for showers and thunderstorms there. another weaker system, here around the cumberland area, moving up towards pennsylvania. that will be moving out of the region shortly. widely scattered showers and storms as you mentioned. another batch over there in delaware. temperature-wise, we just got to 90. the same temperature we had yesterday. but the dew points a little higher at 72. 83 degrees in ocean city. 81 in oakland, but the dew point at 72, which is pretty crushing seven police vehicles with a tractor. pion has been in trouble with the law before he was arrested last month by the newport city police. there is speculation the car crushing was revenge. pion is being held on $15,000 bail. in corpus christi, a family is safe at home, after a horrifying boating incident. check out this video. the coast guard rescued two adults and three children from the water after the boat capsized. they had to use a helicopter unit to rescue everyone from the boat. luckily, the group was wearing life jackets. no one else was hurt. right now, 53 counties are under a burn ban. but as chris mckenon reports, all 77 counties in the state could soon face that same ban. >> extreme heat and severe drought, a disastrous recipe, for raging grass fires in oklahoma. and firefighters have a big warning. >> the conditions are really favorable right now, for just really any minor thing. they could have started a fire. so i just hope everyone is careful in just their everyday activities. and hopefully we can all, avoid some of the major fires that we had last year. >> the governor's office has a close eye on the conditions with daily monitoring of where these fires pop up and what the outlook is for the next couple of days. >> i think so we're getting pretty close if it's not intimate that a burn ban for our whole state soon. >> firefighters warn, the extrem risk is still there. and it doesn't take much to cause a fire if it is already there. >> we're asking people not to burn. it is too try. -- dry. the humidity is low. >> now, in order to order a minutes. take a look at temperatures here. we are currently up to 90 degrees now. so far, that's the warmest i've seen it all day. dew points there high at 72 degrees. south winds at 8. barometer, holding steady at 30.swrn are 0 -- 30.01 inches. 87 not far from d.c. did drop a few temps there. 81 still -- 91 still in elkton. normal high today is around 86. so we're running three or four degrees or so above average for this time of year. southerly winds continue to bring in a warm, moist air. that would do that all weekend long, until sunday, late in the day, when a front will come through. we have a pretty good shot of widely scattered showers tomorrow. a better chance of thunderstorm activity. maybe pretty good downpours here on sunday afternoon or sunday night. i'll show you why. to the north of us, showers across new england. this front out across the upper plains is going to bring those folks some relief where they're getting thunderstorm activity with it as well. a whole batch across kentucky, ohio valley. not a whole lot on our region. some of it across the mountains is moving to the east as you can see. particularly west virginia to the northwest of us, there is a front that will approach us, but not until sometime on sunday. you see some clouds develop this afternoon. kept temperatures from getting too much warmer than the low 90s. and storms across pennsylvania. north of us, pretty clear. south of us also pretty clear. southwest of us that we're seeing most of the activity at this time. so we'll remain in the warm and humid conditions. cooler air coming into new england briefly. and then that cool air heads back to the west. that front will come through the area, sometime late in the day on sunday. if it comes through late in the afternoon, with all of the heat and humidity, we have a pretty good shot of pretty strong thunderstorms maybe sunday. if it comes through much later, we'll lose the heat from the sun and won't be nearly as severe. could get pretty good downpours on sunday night. quick look at the tropics. ernesto, still out there, a long way up, but it's gone through the windwards. now in the caribbean. not really going to affect anybody for several days, until it gets way out here. by wednesday, expect it to get to be maybe a category 1 storm. it's moving quickly, which does inhibit development. 21 miles an hour. that's pretty fast. but looks like most of the models have it going toward the yucatan. it may -- may get into the gulf of mexico. but some of the models have it even going further south toward beliz and honduras. a couple of them had it into the gulf. but right now, you can see the spread by the time you get out to wednesday. really no consensus until we get up to about south of cuba. beyond that, it's really anybody's guess at this point. but it does not look like it's going to be a major, major hurricane. at least that's one thing. south winds, 5 to 10 knots. tonight, widely scattered showers. 72 and still humid. just like last night. tomorrow, 93. just like today, maybe a thunderstorm in spots in the afternoon. and a better chance coming up on sunday. so make your plans. if you're out on the recovering today after a double decker bus crashes into a bridge support outside st. louis. federal transportation officials say that they will investigate the crash. but as teresa garcia reports, the cause may already be known. >> reporter: a blown tire is believed to be what caused a fully-loaded double-decker mega bus to crash into a concrete bridge support pillar on interstate 55, on litchfield, illinois. the bus carrying 81 passengers were en route from chicago to kansas city when it went out of control. >> i heard the tire goult. and i just-- go out. then i just felt a bumpy ride as we were going off the road. and then just really sudden impact. >> it kind of felt like the bus was going to tip. and the driver eventually regained control of the bus. and was able to keep it upright. but obviously could not stop in time -- before hitting the mat. >> rescue crew used ladders to get to the victims, some trapped on the second floor of the bus. that's where zach hall was seated. >> i just kind of came to and saw that there were people on the floor. a lot of people had bloody faces. >> reporter: 30 ambulances and 10 helicopters were on scene to transport the wounded, whose injuries ranged from cuts and bruises to broken bones and worse. >> there were three patients whose injuries were a little more serious. they may need surgery. so they're being transferred out. >> two years ago, a mega bus was involved in an accident near syracuse, new york. four people were killed. the national highway traffic safety administration is already working with illinois officials on an investigation spothursday's crash. teresa garcia, wjz eyewitness news. >> state police say it could take weeks to complete the investigation into the crash. the maryland man suspected in the disappearance of frederick native robyn gardner won't be appearing for trial after all. mary is in the newsroom with more on the unrelated charge just dropped against gary giordano. >> the state will not pursue charges against gary giordano about his indecency case. the case was set for trial next week. his lawyer asked the case to be dismissed, saying no crime had been committed. yesterday marked the one-year anniversary since gardner disappeared. >> giordano spent four months in an aruban jail but was never charged. social workers -- a report says social workers could have done more to save josh powell's children's lives. >> they were having a good time. >> reporter: we sat down with chuck cox on the deck overlooking his backyard. it is where he used to watch his grandsons, charlie and baden powell play, before they were murdered by their father. >> they remember happy, they were smiling, running, having a good time. charlie would run back and forth across the field trying to get the kite to fly. >> reporter: the boys were killed last february, after what was supposed to be a visit to their father with a supervisor. instead, josh powell attacked them with an accident and set the house on fire as well. powell had been order to undergone a psychosexual evaluation days before. they believed powell had killed his wife susan but that specific information was not available to the children's administration. and that social services worker did not consult with law enforcement about the decision to let the children visit his home. >> the work was very professional, very exemplary. talking to some of the committee members, they said, there was no way anyone could have predicted this tragic event. >> reporter: chuck cox, skeptical. >> excuse themselves for missing everything, for missing the big warning signs that were there. and i don't think it goes far enough in addressing the things that they missed. >> reporter: josh powell was never officially charged in the disappearance of his wife susan. a scary story out of one maryland county, a pack of wild dogs is reportedly on the loose in st. mary's county. kai has more on what is being done to protect the community. >> reporter: these dogs have been terriding a neighborhood and so far have managed to elude animal control. >> reporter: in st. inego's, animal control officers at st. mary's county set traps. brian coors keeps a close watch over sugar. saturday morning, he let his other dog gizmo out, he never came out. >> i just looked for him and found him. they had ripped and tore his throat up pretty bad. >> reporter: investigators believe a pack of wild dogs are roaming the county. those that have seen them say they are large, ferocious animals. >> some say they are pit mixes. some say there are couple of shepherd mixes. >> reporter: a pack of wild dogs killed a bassett hound. now, michelle lefter also holds her puppy tight. >> we're afraid to let her dog out to do normal business. afraid to even walk ourselves. >> reporter: animal control officers first learned of the killer dogs last summer. since then, they have trapped several feral puppies and euthanized them. but the adult most dangerous dogs have eluded them. >> we're going to start patrolling later in the evenings and try maybe a couple of night patrols. it's just catching up with them is the hard part. >> reporter: while the dogs continue to run free, some residents of this rural section of st. mary's county say they'll continue to live in fear. >> the big concern with kids, you know if they'll attack a house dog, they'll attack anything. >> reporter: authorities say these dogs are smart. they avoid the traps, sleep during the day and travel and hunt during the early morning hours and late night hours. vic? >> construction for the grand grand prix in baltimore is moving steadily along. raceway officials say they're more than halfway through the build on russell street. but you can plan on this tonight. construction begins at 10:00 and won't stop until 5:00 tomorrow morning. the rain seems to be staying away this afternoon. but the humidity is not. take a like look outside right now. mix of and that's a pretty strong cell with a lot of rain with it that is moving pretty much, looks like it's moving to the east now, toward the delaware bay. so maybe it will get out of those folks' hair shortly. the rest of the area, pretty quiet. you can see it, one little county over frederick as well. 90 degrees now. 95 in d.c. whoa. 89 in pax river. 80 in ocean city. dew points are pretty high at resolution a peace theater and said it would impact whatsoever. an unbelievable car crash, during a race in finland. you can see this white ford fiesta take a corner too fast. the car somersaults two times times and tumbles off the race track. incredibly, the driver managed to escape without any major injuries. train riders are looking out for a man who attacked an elderly driver. the victim was forced to wait until the elevator stopped until he did get to safety. >> reporter: it's july 2nd, a little after 9:00 p.m. this 86-year-old man boards this elevator at the church street l station from the street. inside, you can see another man. police say he's about 6'tall, assessing, waiting until the doors open, and he attacks. the suspect holds the older man by the throat and rifles through his pocket, taking the man's wallet, id, and $500. and it's not over yet. the victim has to remain in the elevator as it goes from the train platform back to the street level with his attacker, before the suspect takes off. >> it was several minutes, very frightening minutes for this gentleman. and we want to make sure we get this guy off the street. >> reporter: the victim suffered minor injuries. septa police want you to pay attention to his attacker. they're hoping someone can help. >> we want people to take a close look at this video. close look at this guy's picture. if anyone knows him, has seen him, has any idea where he is, we want to know. >> reporter: for folks who ride this train every day, some say there's specific times they'll ride it and others they won't. >> usually only take it in the morning and afternoon. >> you wouldn't take it at night? >> huh-uh. >> how come? >> too risky. >> reporter: the 87-year-old victim is said to have only minor injuries. there's a new fitness craze that has many runners ditching their sneakers, bare foot running. but doctors say more injuries are being caused by it. those who do run bare foot say it is better for your body. buts are finding more overuse type injuries because of lack of support. doctors say if you must, get swo into it gradually. transition into your sneakers, the pain stops immediately. there are pleasures
