momentary lapse in the live feed. so everybody waited with baited breath. then that tied him with 18 as the most decorated. >> i am so proud of meadowbrook and our teams and our coaches and michael and allison. it's just beyond wonderful. we are just so proud. well, you saw -- you saw the action here. i mean, everybody just loves them. and i'm just ecstatic. >> reporter: and as is everyone here at meadowbrook. again, we're told team usa is winning. this is a 4-by-200 relay. i just spoke with people here at meadowbrook. of course, they have been following this. they're so excited. we're told that michael is considered what is considered the anchor in this relay. he has never served that position before. but because he is so close to becoming the world record- holding medal winner, they are letting him finish out the race, hoping that this 19th medal will come to him this afternoon. of course, we're just waiting any moment. they're going to win this race, we're hoping. and michael phelps will become the world record holder of medals. we're told that he is the next swimmer up. and of course, i'm getting cues in my ears, guys as we are just as excited as you are at home. of course, all of this is going to air tonight, around 8:00, locally. and we, unfortunately, feel like we're giving it all to you. but we know everybody is so excited. we're told that michael phelps and his team, michael phelps is swimming right now, the very last leg of the 4-by-200 freestyle relay. if he can pull this off and team usa can pull this off, i'm listening as people are literally starting to run around to catch the very end of this. if they can pull this off again, michael phelps takes the record as the most medals, winning the most olympic medals of all time. >> and jessica, it's a russian gymnast. i'm not even going to try to pronounce her name. but she's the one that holds that record right now. michael phelps coming into the olympic games, only needed three more medals. he's gotten those two. and again, this race will decide whether he breaks that record. her long-standing record. she was a gymnast in the 1950s and the 1960s. so that record is held for so very long. and i think it's just extraordinary that his team is allowing him to anchor this race. so what a moment we are waiting for it right now. michael phelps started swimming at the pool behind you when he was young. but really got serious, i think, when he was 12, 13, 14. >> reporter: okay. mary, michael is in the water. of course, we're hearing cheers. everybody is clapping. all right. we're getting -- it's a good sign. it's a good sign. everyone is excited for them. >> we'll know soon. >> reporter: mary, i'm dying. because i have to tell you, they're watching from the computer feed live in the other room. and they put a screen up. but to go live, we have to come out here to the pool. so i'm looking through a small window across the pool, watching people run around. and of course, we're dying, too. we want to see all of this. i have to say, too, we felt a little badly, because allison schmidt, who also swims here as well, won the gold, which is so exciting. and of course, all eyes on phelps today, i mean, really the whole world watching phelps today. judging by what we can see, we're still waiting. i know he's still in the water. any minute, any second really. two more laps. >> two more laps before we're told. >> reporter: okay, mary, everyone is going crazy. all of these young kids just jumping up and down. they're so excited with such incredible things for the sport of swimming. everyone just so confident that they are going to pull this off. and what an amazing way to win that medal with all of your teammates in the water with you. it has to be an incredible feeling. he's on his very last lap now, we're told. we can hear everybody cheering from inside, clapping. we've seen a lot of tears here today. >> happy tears. >> reporter: happy tears! >> after she shot past the competition to win the 100- meter back stroke. her parents cheered as their daughter finished first, just 14 minutes after swimming a qualifying race. the teenager from colorado says she's dedicating all of her races to aurora, after the deadly theater shooting. franklin's teammate made it a sweep for the u.s. in the back stroke. the family rushed to congratulate him. >> oh, man. >> mom couldn't keep her hands off the gold medal. families of america's swimmers say being at the games is almost overwhelming. >> should i turn on the tears now? because i've just abduction case. adam may has more on the composite sketch. adam? >> reporter: it's been nearly a week since vi ripken, cal ripken's mother was taken. this was taken at a store in anne arundel county. vi ripken was found safe in the back seat of her car near her home. police are also releasing a composite sketch of the suspect. it is based on witness accounts. aberdeen's mayor who was away last week, calls this incident very disturbing. >> our investigators, the state police, the fbi, again, are rung down a myriad of information and tips and so i think it's just going to be a matter of time. >> mrs. ripken was not physically harmed. police say they don't have a motive for the assault at this time. mary, back to you. >> all right, aam. -- adam. we'll have much more on this new evidence coming up at 5:00 and 6:00. it could take just nine days to stabilize that sinkhole near johns hopkins which is affecting homes and businesses. mike hellgren breaks down the growing problem on what is being done to fix it. >> reporter: well, the damage here is significant. and it will take more than a week to get everything fixed. >> reporter: a big sinkhole in east baltimore is getting bigger. it opened last week, shutting down monument street between north bradford and north monford, near johns hopkins hospital. >> this is the nature of the aging infrastructure situation in many largestacy. baltimore is not an exception. >> reporter: crews are installing monitors on some buildings. and it could take nine days to stabilize the sinkhole, which has disrupted lives in the area. >> we are going back up this way, and detoured down to get home. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: once crews stabilize the sink holes, pedestrians will be able to walk nearby. but this part of monument street will remain closed to cars, until all of the construction is complete. >> we want to make sure we know what we're doing and why we're doing it. >> reporter: again, it could take nine days to stabilize the some buildings. but they now tell us a temporary water supply has been set up and everyone has water service. a 75-year-old woman fights back against a robber. and the suspect still has not been caught. gwen cerota was beaten by a woman, when she returned from walking her dog yesterday morning, in cockeysville. the suspect demanded money. and serato refused. she pulled a knife. she is really battered and bruised there around her mouth. hear from cerota and baltimore county police coming up, all new at 5:00 and 6:00. city firefighters are trying to figure out what sparked a fire at a downtown apartment building. flames broke out on the fourth floor of the mount claire overlook on pratt street earlier today. the building was evacuated while the fire was extinguished. all injuries were minor. several people who live there have been temporarily displaced. the humidity is creeping up once again. outside right now, once again, we're enjoying normal temperatures. but it's a little muggy. wjz has weather and traffic together. meteorologist bernadette woods is here with the updated numbers. felt pretty good. >> it really did. this is not bad for july standards. and especially what we've had most of the month. but we're also seeing a couple of thunderstorms out there. for some people, they've had strong thunderstorms out west. and we've seen a couple of warnings just to the south of western maryland in west virginia and virginia. also, just to the north of us, in pennsylvania. so there still are some thunderstorms out there. a few are creeping eastward. and we're seeing just around d.c., this thunderstorm has been sort of hanging around for the past half hour. you can see, not a whole lot of movement to it right now. also in the eastern shore, storms starting to pop up. and you can see they're scattered about. as far as temperatures go, take a look at this graphic here. 85 degrees. that is it for this afternoon. 75 in cumberland. and 77 in ocean city. we'll have at northbound 95. we have congestion there from 395 to the fort mchenry tunnel. north side inner loop, stop and go there from charles street to dulaney valley. and the west side inner loop, almost up to 20 minutes there. it begins at southwestern boulevard to liberty road. we have an accident on the west side of the outer loop. that's at 795, definitely going to catch your eye. and in the hampstead area, route 30 closed in both directions between 482 and the south circle. we have an overturned tractor- trailer we're dealing with in that area. as far as baltimore city goes, we have the issue concerning the water main break causing a problem. east lombard, the two right lanes are blocked. and as mike had mentioned earlier, still closed between wolf street and patterson park. the best way to take that around would be orleans street and madison. not a bad drive at all. there's a look at 895 at potee street. we're taking a look there. right there, as you are connected to the beltway. headed to practice. area businesses organized a rally so people could show their support for the team, despite the sanctions handed down last week. they punished the program with a hefty fine in the wake of the sandusky sex abuse scandal. ferocious fires have created quite a problem for residents and farmers in oklahoma. the grass fires still haven't been contained. and at least five bells have been destroyed. some farmers have had to release horses because the fire has come so close. they have issued warnings for all 77 counties. drought conditions are threatening much of the midwest. and some of the drought crisis is over in texas, but despite heavy rain, the northern panhandle is still parch. parched. the state system is drying up. karen brown reports for wjz. >> reporter: each in the middle of a corn field. the farmer is never without his blackberry. >> how has that changed your life? >> well, ultimately, what we will be able to do is consult everything with our telephones. >> reporter: in the blistering heat of the drought, he and his neighbors are going high-tech to conserve water. because the massive aquifer that irrigates their field has seen an historic drop in two confident in the economy this month. the conference board is reporting's -- reporting a surprise jump in consumer confidence. consumer spending drives 70% of economic activity. but a separate government report today shows americans spent no more in june than may,ine though -- even though their incomes rose half a percent. analysts say the weak job market has people holding onto their pay checks. home prices rose in may for the second straight month in 20 major cities. prices rose the most in chicago, atlanta, and chicago. and swiss giant ubs saw profits last quarter. and it's blaming facebook's botched ipo. technical errors gave more shares than its clients ordered. ubs says it plans to take actions to recoup those losses. that's your money watch. in new york, i'm alexis areas with thunderstorms. and there's not a whole lot of movement to these. there's a lot of rain coming out of these storms. what we did already is showed you earlier, western maryland, warnings around us. but also want to show you on the eastern shore, some of these storms right now. this is where there's a lot of rain and hail over the weekend. and at this point, you see a thunderstorm just to the south of cambridge once again. one just over easton. and a couple dotting the landscapes northeast of that. now, we're going to go over to the western shore and show you that a couple of thunderstorms have been hanging around d.c. we're also seeing around rockville, that thunderstorm still hanging on. and a couple more just out to the west of this. they're scattered about and into these two different storms that we're dealing with. switch it over. we have clouds in a lot of places this morning. gave way to sunshine. and scattered showers and thunderstorms as we head through the day with all of this going on. as far as the wind goes, a little breeze coming out of the east. that's it. but it's enough to keep these temperatures down. we are sitting at 85 degrees in baltimore. look at all of these 80s, not 90s, just updated to 75 in oakland. and 77 in ocean city. we'll take you a little closer. the dew point is 68 degrees. that's typical for july. nothing extreme. but still uncomfortable outside. as far as the immediate metro area goes, we're in the mid- 80s. 85 is the high. slightly below average. coming up at 5:00 and 6:00, we have a review of temperatures. we are ending on a cool note. this is a pretty hot note. now, as far as the large picture goes, here's one to the northwest. here's another down to the southeast. and there's one even behind that western front. a couple of storms lined up to affect us. and with the few involved, we're getting a very stopped off weather pattern. this one to the west here is going to get stuck in place and because of that, it's going to take until thursday for all of this to start clearing. scattered storms tonight, tomorrow and again. thursday before all of this leaves. when it does, we'll see another one over the weekend. it will bring again an increased chance for showers and storms. out on the water, south winds, 5 to 10 knots. tomorrow, temperatures will try to creep up the next couple of days. but tonight, going to 70s. still a shower or thunderstorm around. maybe a couple of degrees from today. but still close to our average of 87. then when we start to limit our chances for showers going into the weekend. those numbers are going to go up. but in this kind of a pattern, we never really fully clear out. it may not be as widespread. but if you check our radar each and every day, we're pretty [ bleep ] >> this is a holy site for the people. >> reporter: romney's trip was meant to be showing that he is ready to be a world leader. >> it's a reminder that this is a high-stakes situation. >> reporter: romney's campaign is gearing up for his return to the u.s. and hinting that a vice vice presidential selection may be coming soon. the campaign unveiled a new smart phone app that will tell supporters romney's vp pick. tara mergener, wjz eyewitness news. >> wjz 13 is always on. check in for complete coverage of campaign 2012. for the latest on the candidates and the big issues, log onto wjz.com. the wife of george zimmerman, the neighborhood volunteer watch person charged with killing an unarmed teen, is facing her own legal problems. shelly zimmerman pled not guilty to perjury. she is accused of lying. shelly zimmerman did not appear in court. her lawyer entered the plea on her behalf. the anne arundel county man is attacked after being in custody. kai is live with the latest on the case. >> reporter: police say 21-year- old james arthur zito attacks his mother in their millersville home last night. zito allegedly became violent for no reason. fighting off two other family members and stabbing others at the same time. he then took off from the home. he was arrested this morning at the glen burnie mall, after witnesses called 911 because of unusual behavior. he is currently being evaluated. his 54-year-old mother is being treated for nonlife-threatening injuries. >> kai, thank you. charges are pending. a predator, targeting ocean city. mary joins us now with more on the crimes. >> reporter: at least three women have been attacked over the past month. and now, police are issuing an alert. >> reporter: as thousands enjoy summer vacation in ocean city. police are warning beach goers to be on guard. when the sun goes down, someone is targeting women. >> three attempted assaults that have happened in the past month. >> reporter: in all three cases, the victims were approached just as they were leaving a bar alone. police say the women were intoxicated. the attacks were were near bars from 15th to 52nd streets in ocean city. >> in poorly lit areas. >> reporter: police are warning the women to stick with the group late at night. it's something these visitors always do. >> we definitely travel with the guys we're with we're never alone. >> never. >> the suspect is described as a white man, about 5'10," weighing 170 pounds in his mid- 20s to early 30s. ocean city police note the description is vague. but so far, that's all they have to go on. >> reporter: the man initiates conversation with the women before attempting to assault them. vic? >> mary, thank you. police are checking surveillance cameras in the vicinity of those attacks. the american red cross is pleading for donations, facing a critical shortage in blood supplies. nationally, the supply in hospitals has not been this low for about 15 years. it's mostly the same here in maryland. the storms and hot weather have made the situation even worse. call 1-800-red cross to get information or make a donation. if you think storms seem to be more powerful, a new study today backs up feeling. alex demetrick reports, more storms packing more punch are increasing. >> reporter: a year ago and a half ago, it was blizzards. two weeks ago, heavy downpours. >> the mid-atlantic has experienced a 55% increase in the frequency of these kinds of events. between 1948 and 2011. >> reporter: that's the findings of this study by environment maryland, which reviewed precipitation data from 4,000 reporting stations over 65 years. >> something is happening to our atmosphere. now, there are cyclical changes in our weather patterns. however, something is still happening outside of just that. >> reporter: the prime suspect in the study is global warming. >> reporter: water vapor is the fuel of the drive's storms. warmer atmosphere holds more water vapor. you get a warmer world. there's more likely that a storm will pick up more energy and turn into an extreme downp.o.w. >> reporter: the climate may be changing. but can critical infrastructure change to handle it? also destroyed dozens of huts. state officials fear this severe weather could stick around for the next two days. federal investigators release new details about a deadly virginia bus crash. today, the national transportation safety board announced the may 11, 2011 crash, was likely caused by driver fatigue. the bus bound for new york overturned on i-95, south of fredericksburg. killing four people and injuring dozens. the bus company, sky express, had no regard for passenger safety. the driver faces four counts of involuntary manslaughter. more than three years after being charged with the murder of his wife, chicago area police officer drew peterson goes on trial. adam may has more on what unfolded today in the courtroom. >> reporter: opening statements from both sides just wrapped up a short time ago. peterson is on trial for first- degree murder in the death of his third wife, cath sabio. she was tund-- kathleen sabio. she was found dead in her bathtub. she was originally determined to be accidental drowning and he wasn't considered until the disappearance of his fourth wife. he is not charged in that one but is suspected. >> no word yet if peterson plans to take the stand in his own defense. a woman's body is snatched from a new jersey cemetery. now, police are searching for grave robbers. >> reporter: a lock and chain now surround and protect the spinellie family mausoleum, at the cemetery in pleasantville. where police say sometime thursday night into friday morning, someone stole the body of 98-year-old pauline spinellie, she died in 1996. >> when they told me that the body had been removed, it was just beyond comprehension. >> reporter: spinelli's granddaughter said she got a call friday morning. her parents, two awntdzs and -- aunts and an uncle, were interred in the same crypt. >> the woman told me over and over, i don't know how to tell you this. and i said, just spit it out. >> despicable is the word that comes to mind. >> reporter: the boulder may have been used to shatter the glass that probably wouldn't have been heard by anyone. >> the mausoleum itself sits in the back of the graveyard itself. so it's pretty desolate from the roadway. >> reporter: the thief or thieves then broke the lock. >> the casket had been removed, pried open. >> reporter: spinelli's body, dressed in a powder blue gown, was taken. >> i can't imagine why anyone would want the body of my grandmother. >> reporter: police are looking into possible cult and religious ritual activity, including one called polomayambay. >> it has been said that they do use human remains in animals to either sacrifice for their religious services. >> reporter: police say they are reaching out to others. people vacationing in cape cod are being cautious about being in the water, after a man is injured in a possible shark attack. he suffered bites on his legs, while swimming. witnesses say they saw sharks swim up to the victims. but authorities are still trying to determine whether it was actually a shark attack. the man remains hospitalized in stable condition. fire officials say his cuts are severe, but he will not lose a limb. for years now, new york city mayor michael bloomberg has restricted everything from indoor smoking. his latest target is hospitals and baby formula. >> reporter: first, it was transfats, then smoking, then sugary drinks. now, new york city mayor michael bloomberg is going after the baby bottle. >> most public health officials around the country think that this is a great idea. >> reporter: beginning appropriately enough, on labor day, 27 out of 40 new york city hospitals will keep infant formula under lock and key, encouraging more moms moms to breast-feed. mothers won't be denied formula, but those who want it will have to hear about the benefits of breast-feeding. >> a mother has enough pressure on her, jifft just having a -- just having a new baby and giving birth the first time. she shouldn't have to worry about explaining her choice to anybody. >> reporter: the american pediatrics recommend that mothers breast-feed exclusively for the first 12 months. in new york, 90% start out only brefort feeding. but by the time the baby is two months, that number drops to 31%. >> we encourage breast-feeding. so what we try to do is educate our patients. >> reporter: flushings hospital in queens is participating in the voluntary latch-on campaign, part of a nationwide campaign to improve infant health. >> we want what is best for the babies. we want to prevent them from being ill. nobody wants their newborn baby to be sick. >> reporter: in the past, critics have lampooned the mayor's health initiative. and this time, some moms think he's gone too far. >> i don't think it should be something that is legislated by the government, obviously. the mother should have that choice. >> under the program, participating hospitals will also enforce the requirement to provide formula for medical reasons only. keep track of the number of bottles used monthly. and stop handing out free formula. simply putting a smile on your face could contribute to lower stress levels. and you don't have to be happy. the research says smiling affects positive emotions from effects on stress. researchers say just holding your face in a smile could help. next time you're stuck in traffic, hold your face in a smile. it may help your heart health. an australian couple doesn't have any children, but they have 56 babies, koala babies, that is. they own a hospital that is going to get a lot busier. breeding season has just begun. so lots of orphaned joey comes in when their mothers are killed. their biggest threats, habitat dogs, cars. many work for free. the koala population has plunged by a third in the past 20 close to baltimore now. over portions of baltimore county, where we have a warning until 5:30 because of that one cell there. just northeast of this. heading up to the northeast. toward dayton. norwood, glen el, glenn wood and ivy. if you're in central portions of howard county, heading up towards i-70, it's heading up west of columbia. it has weakened a little bit. but some areas are going to see brief, heavy downpours. other portions in montgomery county. also here, just east of leesburg. heading to the northeast, north of gaithersburg. and over the eastern shore, we have a batch here near easton as you can see. so eastern shore some folks will get some downpours as well. not too far of easton. south of denton. and north of fredericksburg. once again, these are spotty. some areas getting heavy downpours. sail picture, probably for the next couple of days. trach a look at temperatures. dew point is moderate at 68. humidity, 56%. eat winds at 9. currently holding steady. much cooler with shower activity. 68 and 63 in oakland. it's been sunny, generally mid- 80s as you can see. ocean city now, 81. dew point, 68. could be much higher. columbia, you'll be dropping shortly. east winds pretty much all day long. kept us from getting super, super hot. although the next few days, might see a shift change. probably get up to the low 90s once again. so the start to august will be somewhat warmer than the end of july. now, we've got a weak front to the west of us. shower activity tomorrow. pretty good try late tonight. by thursday, a little dry air comes in. but also begins to warm up as i mentioned, probably in the 90s. tomorrow, dry air west of us. weak front kind of drying out. once again, pop-up thunderstorm activity. all because of one low pressure. kind of a weak frontal boundary, with chilly air coming in aloft. and that's what develops these winds. 5 to 10 knots. bay temp around 82 degrees. tonight, scattered showers and storms. pretty good downpours. 70s by morning. and patchy fog. tomorrow, back up into the upper 80s with again, scattered shower and thunderstorm activity. some folks will get some downpours. others won't see anything at all. >> okay.
