eyewitness news. >> and right now, all five suspects are being held without bond. breaking news from afghanistan, where president obama is making a surprise visit. adam may is in the newsroom to explain his trip comes on the anniversary of osama bin laden's assassination. adam? good afternoon, kai. just a short time ago, air force one lands in afghanistan, under the cover of darkness, with president obama, he's meeting now with afghan president hamid karzai. it's an immense role, after u.s. troops leave in 2014. the special forces raid that killed osama bin laden one year ago, a mile ago was a milestone in the fight against al qaeda. in marking the anniversary, president obama has been accused of exploiting bin laden's death for political advantage. meanwhile, mitt romney says today, he would have gone after bin laden, even though he publicly denounced the president's plan in 2007. the nation should be vigilant for any signs of revenge attacks. >> the president is expected to give a speech on the afghanistan war effort tonight at 7:30. you can watch that live here on wjz 13. now to a developing story on emergency repairs to the jfx. sky eye chopper 13 over the repair crews. later this week, transportation officials say they will close down the roadway, completely northbound. and down to just one lane southbound. mike hellgren reports on the major headaches ahead. >> reporter: this is what we know. the jfx was closed thursday night, starting at 10:00, and closed until friday, at 4:00 in the morning. they've already cleaned out pipes under the road. but they still need to make more repairs. >> a routine inspection led to initial road repairs. some were clogged. others crushed. and that is causing erosion on the road surface, which could eventually lead to a sinkhole. now, the cleaning of those pipes is complete, and repair crews need to close down jfx, completely, overnight. that will begin thursday, from 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. transportation officials are urging drivers to use alternative routes including park heights avenue, along with others. but it could still be a mess. >> if there's an emergency. and it's causing any kind of safety to the public, then that's something that needs to be done as quickly as possible. >> reporter: the repairs involve digging as low as 20 feet below the surface of the road. and the work carries a multimillion dollar price tag. and it's unclear now how long all the roadwork could last. >> this is very important. the jfx is a very important stretch of roadway for baltimore city. it brings you in and out of the city. so of course, we want to get the work done. and we want to get it done correctly and as quickly as we possibly can. >> reporter: already, capacity has been reduced by a third. reporting along the jfx, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> and northbound traffic will be detoured overnight at the north avenue 28th street exit and will be directed onto 29th street. and back live with more on the frightening home invasion robbery. >> well, kai, the victims are students and alumni. they scoured for evidence. one student says the suspect pointed a gun in his face and demanded keys to his car. the thieves took a silver 2002 honda crv. they also got away with cash and laptop computers. three suspects remain on the loose tonight. >> prince george's county police, asking anyone who sees the honda crv, with the university of maryland logo on the back to call them immediately. dna debate. maryland attorney general doug gansler says dna is the key to solving cold cases. and he wants to strike down last week's decision. the ruling blocks police from collecting dna samples from people charged with violent crimes. support for the appeal is growing among state prosecutors. well, testimony is under way right now in the controversial election night robocall trial. derek valcourt has more of the efforts from both sides of the julius henson case. >> reporter: for the jury, this all comes down to the intent of those robocalls. prosecutors say campaign consultant julius henson intended those robocalls to suppress voter turnout on election night 2010. but the defense says julius henson has been thrown under the bus and left holding the bag. the robocalls were sent to 112,000 in predominantly african american prince george's county, suggesting that o'malley had already won. the call never mentioned that they were really coming from the camp of republican bob ehrlich, as required by law. henson contends that they were meant to inspire more people to vote 6:00. an investigation today into a marc train accident killed a pedestrian. it happened just after 7:00 this morning near northeast creek road in lows dale, baltimore county. police say the train was traveling southbound when the person was hit. the victim has not been identified. passengers were transferred to another train. an area teen is hailed a hero, for saving his elderly neighbors from a fire. 16-year-old justin bowman was walking near the home in prince george's county, when he saw a fire on the second floor. he said he didn't think twice and ran toward the home. >> ran up to the house. and he was knocking on the door. oh, he was pounding on the door. >> yeah, i was banging on the door. i was banging on it hard, as a matter of fact. then i was like -- i was like, yeah, there's a fire in the house. they're like, there's a fire? and they went upstairs and they looked. and there was a fire. >> reporter: louise and her husband were not hurt. more than 30 firefighters put out the flames. they said justin was their secret guardian angel. they had no clue their home was about to go up in flames. wjz has weather and traffic together. i'll talk to kristy in a second. but the store clerk tries to hit one of the suspects but is hit in the face. the crowd disperses, after the clerk uses pepper spray. police say this is the third flash mob theft in portland in the past month. a toy car is towed away with a little girl still riding inside of it. now it's her grandparents facing charges. police in sarasota, florida, say they arrested the grandmother and grandfather, after they were spotted towing the 7-year-old granddaughter, in the plastic, hotwheels car, behind the suv. they were reportedly drunk at the time. both have been charged with child endangerment and other offenses. the little girl was not hurt. police in washington state find the body of a man wanted for killing his family. and now we're getting an inside look at the underground bunker, where he hid out and died. chris legeros has the story. >> reporter: it is far away from any established trail, deep in in the woods on a ridge overlooking north bend. the bunker that peter keller spent building. deputies say took his own life after being surrounded by s.w.a.t. teams. >> reporter: there's still erosion coming from the hillside above. a couple of timbers have been removed. and if you look below, you can see there is 2 1/2 levels of living space. lots of junk still inside. >> there is still enough tier gas and -- tear gas and bleach inside. but inside, we find beams and cokes to drink. empty bottles of water. there's a crude electrical system that was apparently connected to a generator and piping for water. propane. charcoal lighter fuel, even a stove with a smoke stack that came up through the bunker. >> our goal right now, though, is to get this cleaned up as best we can, demolished, restored, so that it's no longer a hazard. because i mean, you can see that. if you look the wrong step here, you'd fall a good 20 feet straight down. >> detectives are studying more than 120 pieces of evidence, collected from the bunker in hopes of learning what motivated the crimes and the hideaway. wall street bounces back today after a rocky start to the week. president obama makes a surprise visit to neighboring afghanistan. danielle nottingham reports for wjz, from the white house. >> reporter: president obama marks the one-year anniversary of the killing of osama bin laden, with an unannounced visit to afghanistan. he is meeting with troops fighting the taliban and the war against terror. the visit comes one year after u.s. navy seals killed the al qaeda leader in neighboring pakistan. there has been no information from the pakistani government about who was helping the terror leader hide in plain sight. u.s. officials are still looking for answers. >> reporter: the white house has been giving interviews and access to the situation room, where the president gave the go ahead for the bin laden mission. >> i said that i'd go after bin laden if we had a clear shot at him. and i didn't. >> reporter: the president's trip to afghanistan is officially to sign a new security agreement. his republican rival accuses the president of exploit being the anniversary for political gains. >> reporter: mitt romney, along with former mayor rudy giuliani brought pizzas to firefighters and thanked them for their sacrifices to 9/11. romney once again criticized the president for trying to turn the killing of bin laden into a campaign issue. >> i think politicizing it and trying to draw a distinction between himself and myself, was a misuse of the event that brought america together, which is the elimination of osama bin laden. >> reporter: romney also scolded the president for suggesting he would not have ordered the raid that address the nation tonight from afghanistan. and you can watch his speech live here on wjz, at 7:30. well, the man accused of going on a shooting spree inside a california college is back behind bars. but not before facing a judge. kai jackson is in the newsroom with more on what the suspect said in court. the accused shooter is pleading not guilt to seven counts of first-degree murder. police say one go went room to room, at identicalos -- oikos university. when he couldn't find her, police say he walked into a classroom, ordered the people to line up against a wall, then executed them. classes resumed at the university. >> police say go just started eating in jail and has been closely monitored by the staff. occupy movement are helping to spread its message. ines ferre has more. >> reporter: hundreds are on the streets of manhattan, protesting economic inequality. this is the first major demonstration for the occupy movement since their camps were dismantled last fall. demonstrators are again expressing anger at big banks, but they're also rallying for workers' rights. >> i'm an investment banker with a spread sheet. deletes a row and suddenly there goes your job. >> reporter: may 1st is also international workers day. and this day, they're calling forces with labor unions. in san francisco, union ferry workers walked off the job, forcing the city to shut down they hope today's protests will mark the return to widespread demonstrations. and they believe teaming up with labor unions will attract more supporters. >> reporter: mayday events are taking place around the world. in countries across europe, workers protested cuts in pay and benefits. in asia, thousands of people took to the streets, demanding higher wages. in the u.s., critics say the occupy movement doesn't have a clear message, but organizers disagree. >> we do have a clear message. we are the 99%. >> reporter: occupy protestors hope today's events will reinvigorate their movement. in new york, ines ferre, wjz eyewitness news. >> protests are planned throughout the evening as well. so far, they have been mostly peaceful. a washington woman is behind bars, charged with intentionally blinding her young daughter with bleach. police say the woman replaced her daughter's eye drops with bleach and put them into her eyes for weeks. she told doctors her daughter injured her eye, playing in a barn. the 18-month-old girl is now permanently blind in one eye and partially blind in the other. she lives with her father. police say her motive -- her mother, that is, is being held on $150,000 bond. in today's wjz healthwatch, doctors are laying out new guidelines, explaining how often women should get mammograms. mary explains for some, that means going to the doctor less than before. mary? >> well, vic, women with an increased risk of breast cancer, are being told to start screening at the age of 40. but the federally funded study says women should be only getting follow-up exams once every other year. women who have had an immediate relative diagnosed with breast cancer or those who have unusually dense breast tissue are twice as likely to develop breast cancer than those who don't. mammograms have been able to help detect earlier. >> one in eight women will develop breast cancer, but less than a quarter of them will die from it. a warning for dog owners. a major dog food company is doing a nationwide recall. diamond food is recalling three types of its product, saying it could be tainted with salmonella. it affects diamond formula dry food, in oklahoma, as a series of tornadoes touch down. witnesses shot this video, showing the danger that neared their town, under the cover of darkness. they are confirming that at least two funnel clouds touched down. just outside of medford, oklahoma. power was knocked out to hundreds of homes, but no injuries were reported. meanwhile, this morning's rain clouds have moved on. and the sun is on full ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, rescue workers continue to search for survivors, after a packed ferry sinks in a river in northeast india, killing more than 100 people. the ferry capsized in heavy winds and rain late last night. it was carrying about 350 people. so far, 103 bodies have been pulled from the water. and at least a hundred people are still feared to be missing. the cause of the accident is under investigation. well, parts of southern britain are put on high alert, following deadly floods. a 52-year-old man died after the car he was a passenger in, became submerged. the man's wife, who was driving, managed to escape. flood warnings will remain in effect in the area, with showers set to continue for at least the next week. >> it reads like a story, ripped from the pages of a best- selling thriller. a spy disappears, only to be found in his apartment in a duffle bag. british directors are calling in a computer expert and even a contortionist to solve it. >> reporter: it took britain's intelligence services a wheel week to make this call to police, after a junior spy didn't show up for work. >> i wanted to talk to one of the members of our staff. >> reporter: police began their search for williams here on this quiet london street, where he lived. but as they made their way up into his third-story apartment, what had been a simple missing persons inquiry, quickly became a bizarre mystery. >> reporter: in the bathroom, a red duffle bag sat in the tub, padlocked. inside it, william's tightly- folded, naked body. detectives found no evidence of a struggle in the apartment and nothing to show whether this was a homicide or suicide. police even asked a yoga expert to prove williams could have locked himself in as a kind of stunt. >> thank you, jessica. balfour has pleaded not guilty to the murder charges in the 2008 killings. a kentucky teenager is injured after being strang strangled by a home made zip line. police say the 13-year-old was playing with the device at home when he got the device tangled around his neck. he was taken to the hospital and has been released. no word if there are any charges. an e-mail, sent by susan powell, detailing how her husband josh powell, treated her before their divorce. her father said he knew she was unhappy but didn't know she was afraid. >> i guess she sounded more desperate than i thought she was. >> reporter: that's chuck cox's reaction to these nine e-mails. her daughter, susan powell, wrote to her friends in the year and a half before she disappeared. they described a woman trapped in an unhappy marriage. to a man she describes as irrational and unpredictable. quote, it seems like a never- ending cycle. but i'm too afraid of the consequences. losing my kids or actions on his part. she talks about a will and putting it in her desk drawer at work, meeting the divorce lawyer, and still fighting for her marriage. >> it just kind of reassured me that she was doing everything she could do and just trying to hang on. and beyond what most people would put up with. >> reporter: she writes, quote, i want him in counseling, on meds. i want my husband, friend, lover back. no more crazy, outrageous, outlandish beliefs or opinions. and while she planned, she feared her husband. her father wishes he had known more. wishing he could have saved his daughter and his grandsons from josh powell. >> it came to the point where she really needed to stop and say, let me out. you know, get me out of here. and i wish he'd have told us. and we would have gone that route. >> reporter: josh powell killed himself and their two young sons in a gas-filled inferno in february in washington state. he was the only person of interest in his wife's disappearance. a georgia firefighter makes a daring rescue, after a toddler falls 20 feet down a storm drain. firefighters had to break the concrete cover, before sending their smallest firefighter into the hole. at 4'11," rosa was able to squeeze down into the storm drain and rescue the 1-year-old little boy. the child walked away with just a few cuts and bruises. well, officials in one massachusetts town are trying to curb cursing. in the town of middle borough, the police chief wants to give $20 tickets to anyone who drops high-volume obscenities in public. many say fining those with vulgar mouths would improve the quality of life, while others see it as an overreach by the government. the chief plans to make his case for the fines at a town meeting next month. desperate housewives is coming to an end. mark steines has more on the season's finale. >> reporter: coming up, the countdown to the desperate housewives finale is on. but first, the ladies got together for their final photo shoots. secrets came to life. like does teri hatcher have a problem with her fellow wives?
