spree. >> reporter: devastating news keeps battering the community of chardon, ohio. three students are now dead. victims of monday's shooting at the local high school. officials confirm the death of russell king and shortly after, demetrius jewelet. they were juniors. as was daniel palmentor who died on friday. they identify the suspect as t.j. lane. he was at chardon waiting for the bus when witnesses say he opened fire, hitting five students. investigators searched his family's home for clues to a motive. cbs news has learned lane complained of being bullied. nate mueller was in the cafeteria when the gun fire started. he said he never expected trouble. >> he was a quiet kid, never caused trouble. never egged anybody on. >> reporter: a lot of the talk here in chardon is about how tight the community is. the sheriff himself has deep roots here and was shaken by the violence. >> i happen to be a graduate of chardon high school. but not my -- i met my wife here. most eerie feeling in the world was walking down the halls yesterday, running down them. >> reporter: across town, there are ribbons are for the victims. >> i can't imagine what the parents are going through. it's horrible. you never think it's going to happen in your town. >> reporter: the community will gather tonight for a candlelight vigil. thursday, parents and students return together to chardon charged as an adult. he is 17 years old. so he technically is a juvenile, but they will determine whether his crime -- or his alleged crime, warrants him being charged as an adult. we'll continue to monitor this. sorry. the two wounded students are 17- year-old male, in serious condition, and 18-year-old female in stable condition. we have a developing story from cecil county at this hour. investigators are trying to determine the cause of a devastating fire that destroys a house. sky eye chopper 13 is over biddle street in chesapeake city. you can see all that is left is the frame of that home. the three-alarm fire broke out just before 2:00 this afternoon. it took 50 firefighters to bring it under control. no one was hurt. the family of four who lived in that house is being assisted by the red cross. remembering a hero. the city fire department is honoring a local army guardsman, murdered in afghanistan. andrea fujii is live in the newsroom with more. andrea? >> reporter: military police are still searching for the gunman who shot and killed major robert marchanti. their bodies were flown into dover air force base late last night. the men were killed when an afghan soldier breached security thursday. major marchanti's son is a baltimore city firefighter. and the baltimore fire chief is ordering all baltimore buildings to fly their flags at half staff in his honor. he joined the army in 1984 and joined the guard in 1986. he also taught physical education at several baltimore county schools. kai? >> andrea, thank you. marchanti will be buried at arlington national cemetery. wife of former prince george's county executive jack johnson owes fines that must be paid. johnson was sentenced to a year and a day for obstructioning investigation into her husband's corruption. the city's chief technology official is in hot water. rico singleton is being faulted for ethical violations while he worked for the state of new york. an audit claimed singleton used mon -- favor on jobs he was on. the audit is being reviewed by baltimore city officials and new york's joint commission on public ethics. disturbing find in dover. it involves the disposal of the remains of 9/11 victims. adam is in the newsroom with more. >> reporter: a pentagon report reveals that partial remains were thrown into a landfill. the new report, part of an investigation, sort of last november, when it was learned that body parts of veterans have been lost at dover air force base. today, the pentagon says some remains of 9/11 victims that could not be identified or tested were cremated. then the ashes were sent to a biomedical waste site. in 2008, it was discovered that the dover facility cremated partial remains of at least 274 american war dead, then dumped them at a landfill in virginia. >> the remains were among those killed at the pentagon and in shanksville, pennsylvania. voters are heading to the polls today in arizona and michigan. that's where 59 gop presidential delegates are up for grabs. in michigan, the race is between mitt romney and rick santorum. >> reporter: mitt romney posed for pictures at his michigan campaign headquarters and kept up his attack on rick santorum. he says his chief rival does not have skills to be president. >> i think he's an economic lightweight. i don't think he understands the process of to show increase. overall, home prices are down 34% from their peak in 2006. yahoo is threatening to sue facebook. it is accusing the social networking site of infringing on up to 20 patents. yahoo is what people are talking about. another costa line cruise is in trouble right now. a vessel with more than 1,000 people on board is crippled in the indian ocean. as rita nissan reports for wjz, it comes a month after the costa concordia's deadly crash off the coast of italy. >> reporter: rescue crews are towing a crippled cruise liner in the indian ocean. hundreds of passengers are crowding the decks of the costa aleg ria because there's no power. a fire on the ship monday left the ship with no air conditioning or way to cook food. >> we have no reports of anyone being sick or hurt. as far as we're aware, the situation is very calm, that the captain is in control of the boat. >> reporter: emergency generators are only powering the ship's control room and its communication equipment. helicopters are dropping food, satellite phones and radios. it's taking longer than expected to tow the ship to the nearest island off the coast of tanzania because the ship is so heavy. but most of the more than 1,000 people on board, including eight americans, should be back on land in the next 24 hours. families of those on the ship are worried. >> i haven't heard from her yet. >> this woman's daughter is a dancer on the costa alegra. she also had a sun working on the costa concordia, which capsized last month, off the coast of italy, killing 23 people. >> it was a nightmare we didn't think we'd have to relive, especially within six weeks. >> reporter: this is in an area where pirates often strike. costa says it has armed guards on board to keep everyone safe. rita nissan, wjz eyewitness news. >> now, carnival is also flying in engineers and technicians to try to repair the generators. if federal regulators get their way, pilots will have to be a lot more experienced before flying commercial airlines. new regulations proposed by the federal aviation administration. >> the faa wants to raise the minimum experience level for the first time in 40 years. the proposed legislation would increase the minimum time required for copilots to 1500 hours. this is just the latest in a string of faa changes. supporters say the moves are long overdue. >> these are absolute rock bottom minimums. what we really need in the long term is to have a healthy enough airline industry that we have people who have more experience in that, than to take these entry level jobs. >> there are two exceptions to this change. former military pilots will need only 750 hours to fly for an airline. and graduates of university flight schools only need 1,000 hours. denise? >> thank you, kai. airline officials say the rule change could force them to raise wages to attract more experienced flyers. we are updating the breaking news from the show. a hearing in the ohio high school shooting ends a moment ago in chardon, ohio. the suspect, 17-year-old tj lane, was not in the courtroom. police say lane opened fire in the cafeteria at chardon high school. hitting five students. three have died of their injuries now. the judge has ordered him to be held for 15 days. prosecutors have until march 1st to charge him. it will be unclear if he will be charged as an adult with three counts of murder. the trial of a former rutgers university student, accused of spying on his roommate during a sexual encounter with another man, continues. the court hears from another student who was there from the very beginning. >> it shouldn't have happened. and we saw something that we didn't expect to see. and it was just -- it just felt weird. >> reporter: former rutgers university student molly way told jurors today how rabbi went on her computer and pulled out images of tyler clemente and another man making out in a dorm room he shared with clemente. >> he went onto my -- i don't remember what program it was, but like an online video chatting program. and he video chatted himself. >> reporter: way says robby was in her dorm room, across the hall. and his desk top was set to automatically turn on. >> after that popped up an image of tyler and his guest. and they were kissing. >> reporter: the 19-year-old, with a soft voice, then describes how other students came to watch. >> the same image, except for the clothes, the tops. >> reporter: that was on september 19th, 2010, days before clemente committed suicide by jumping off of the george washington bridge. prosecutors say clemente suspected he was being watched and reported it to the university. that's when way says she was questioned by campus police. but while talking to them, she said ravi was text messaging her. >> did you tell them we did it on purpose? i think he thought we were going to get in trouble. so he kind of wanted to make it seem more like it was more of an accident. >> that was christine sloan reporting. another rutgers student also took the stand today, saying ravi encouraged several people to tune in the night he streamed clemente's encounter online. former penn state football coach jerry sandusky will have to wait a little longer before his day in court. his lawyer has asked the judge to push back the start of the trial from may until july, saying he needs more time to prepare. sandusky is charged with sexually abusing several boys he met at his at-risk charity for youth. 450e denies any -- he denies any wrongdoing. a major announcement from safety regulators. starting soon, all passenger cars will come equipped with rear-view cameras. >> advocates say these cameras will save the lives of more than 100 children every year. safety officials say many vehicles, especially suvs, have huge blind spots when equipped with traditional mirrors alone. and on average, about 50 children a week are injured when vehicles back over them. the ntsb is expected to submit its official recommendation to congress this weekend. the life-saving technology isn't that expensive. regulators say it will cost carpake makers -- car makers about $200 more per vehicle. >> car makers have been >> i'm sorry. >> reporter: the specifics of joanna's case are rare. but the punch caused a blood clot in her brain. she didn't have any visible injuries but was taken to the hospital after she complained of nausea and a headache. doctors tried performing a surgery to save her but it was too late. her death has been ruled a homicide. police said the fight lasted less than a minute and didn't involve a weapon. >> joanna would have turned 11 this march. so far, no arrests have been made. new details behind the devastating tsunami that hit and crippled a power plant. lucy kraft reports from tokyo. >> reporter: in the hours after the tsunami struck the nuclear plant, japan's leaders were helpless in disarray. that is the picture that emerges in the new report based on people who witnessed it. the normal lines of authority completely collapsed, he told investigators. we managed an emergency mission basis, huddled in an emergency bunker, japanese officials struggled to grasp the size of the efficiency. we politicians had no idea what they were talking about. would this be another chernobyl or three-mile island? no one could give us a straight answer. after 300 interviews with officials and nuclear experts, the report pointed the finger at the plant's operator, tokyo electric. >> no question that pepco, tokyo power company, is primary to blame. prepared for this -- unprepared for this accident. >> unprepared for a power failure. and without electricity, the core's reactor couldn't stay cool, triggering the explosion and meltdown. their own regulatorrors failed to have-- regulators failed to have an emergency plan. >> the magnitude is still too high for them to return. a cleanup is expected to take 40 years. oscar winner jennifer hudson will testify in the trial coming up for the killing of her family. a man is charged with murdering her mother, brother, and 7-year- old nephew. hudson said she knew balfour since they were children and advised her sister against marrying him. a trial is set for april 9th. a 19-year-old murder suspect spits in the face of his lawyer. that was just the beginning of outbursts that led a judge in fort miers, florida, to decide that the teen was incompetent to stand trial. clinton drake is accused of killing his 84-year-old grandfather. drake is now being treated at a mental facility. the danger of sleeping pills. in wjz healthwatch, kato has the surprising results of a 10- year study on over-the-counter and prescription sleeping aids. >> reporter: could your sleeping pills kill you? the latest research from uc san diego says very likely, yes. the study took 10 years to complete and is the most exhaustive of its kind. it tracked the health reports of 34,000 people, half of whom took sleeping pills. the study found subjects who took drugs like ambien or lunesta, were dying in greater numbers than those who were not. 638 patients on sleep medication died, versus 295 deaths of people who were not on the drugs. the study's author spent months double-checking the data. >> after i thoroughly convinced myself that this was really there. was i willing to put my name on this paper? >> reporter: coauthor dr. robert languor has stopped taking his sleeping pill. he said whether you take multiple or just one, your risks double. >> i think patients need to be cautious about using these drugs. particularly the idea that these newer, shorter-acting drugs are safer, is just not so. >> reporter: but dr. nua is not convinced. he points outlet study only found an association between sleeping pills and increased death. >> the relationship there. but just because there's a relationship doesn't necessarily mean that there is one causing the other. >> reporter: he says more studies are needed. and this result should be looked at with caution. >> during 2010, between one in 20 and one in 10 adults took a sleeping pill in the united states. also in healthwatch, could drinking beer actually help you lose weight? a number of online bloggers have reported losing weight on the new beer diet. the plan is to drink only three beers all day, with one snack and lots. water. most doctors, of course, are not on board with this. they say there are no real nutrients and no protein in beer. so it's not healthy. a 1% restaurant tip goes viral. but it's actually a hoax. the false tale caused quite a stir on media sites. apparently someone caused a stir with the 1% tip. the note also advised the server to get a new job. but the manager said the stingy tip was photo shopped. a new insight into a super hero movie. starring robert downey jr. >> reporter: coming up. it is one of hollywood's most anticipated movies. tonight, i am taking you behind the scenes on the top-secret set of "the avengers."
