south, spawning possible tornadoes that ripped apart homes near centerpoint, alabama. trees and power lines littered the streets. firefighters spent the day going house to house, checking for victims. andrew watley ran from his home when it started shaking. >> what did you see when it got down there? >> pretty much all of the houses are gone. people are out there, trying to dig through stuff. took one guy out of the house on the door. he's all bloodied up. he went to the hospital. >> reporter: emergency officials say the deadly storms hit overnight and injured at least 100 people in the birmingham area. >> the whole house is tilted and you couldn't stand up in the house. >> reporter: stan leo's house was severely damaged. he feels lucky to be alive. >> they also say the basement is a say place. this -- safe place. this time, i'm glad i wasn't there. because we would have been killed because the house collapsed onto the place. >> reporter: more than 50,000 people began the day without power. crews are setting up shelters for victims. and towns are adding more security to keep looters away. at least seven alabama counties are looking for disaster relief, after the storms left neighborhoods in ruins. alexis christoforous, wjz eyewitness news. >> and violent storms also hit parts of tennessee, mississippi, and arkansas. putting recovery first. gabrielle giffords resigns from congress. denise is in the newsroom with more on giffords' announcement and the special trip she made today. >> reporter: in one of her last acts in office, giffords finished the political appearance that was erupted by gunfire a year ago. as part of a bittersweet part of the day, giffords started the memorial. she spent time with others who had been at the scene of a rampage. last night, she posted a video on facebook, announcing she intends to resign. >> i have more work to do on my recovery. so to do what is best for arizona, i will step down this week. >> among those who met today with giffords was the man hailed a hero for wrestling a gun magazine from the shooter. >> denise, thank you. jared loughner is being charged with that shooting. he's being held without bail. newt gingrich has a new hurdle to cross after his big win in south carolina. he needs cash to take on mitt romney's well-funded campaign. >> reporter: mitt romney is stepping up to the mike with a new duty at a baltimore county church. derek valcourt has more on the charges he's facing. >> mark bullock is charged with indecent exposure at an adult book store. bullock, a priest at the church of the immaculate church in townsend was found partially nude at the book store. bullock will no longer function as a priest. the archdiocese is launching its own investigation into the incident. bullock faces a misdemeanor charge that carries a fine. $1,000 and three years in prison. >> bullock's next court date is march 6th. more on the foreclosure crisis. the frederick news reports that 15 to 20 people braved below- freezing temperatures. they set up tents next to carol creek, and a few people spent the night. the group hopes to spread word about their foreclosure event next week. they said that members can stay, as long as they follow the law. well, at least a dozen people need a place to stay tonight, after fire damaged six apartments in perry hall. it happened at the perry hall apartment complex last night. six apartments were damaged by smoke and the flames. the two-alarm fire brought 70 firefighters to the scene. the red cross is helping those without a place to live. no weekend. their replacement says he sees no need for radical change in the country. survivors of carnival's costa concordia ships are being offered off the cruise ship. it's something many are calling tasteless and insulting. passengers plan to file a class- action suit against carnival. meantime, industry analysts say insurance costs, related to the sinking of the ship, may reach $1 billion. parts of the state, but not everywhere yet. first doppler radar, there's been rain across the state today. in addition to the rain, we've had many areas with just that light mist and drizzle. and that still continues where we do have the fog. switch it over and show you all of this started last night, when temperatures were actually below freezing. so there was a little bit of freezing drizzle during the overnight hours. then temperatures slowly climb to above freezing. and in some cases, they keep climbing. 48 in ocean city. 49 in oakland. that's where the clouds have given way to sunshine. now, in between the two, we're really socked in, in that fog. and we are still in the 30s this afternoon. really killed our high temperature for the day. now, the other thing, the winds are very light, where the fog still is. but you notice, where the winds are starting to pick up, it's mixing up the atmosphere. that's allowing the fog to give way to sun. the other thing, the visibility where we still have the fog is very low. only one mile in baltimore, whereas we're now up to 10 miles in oakland. overnight, we're still going to be dealing with this storm. the bulk of the rain gets out of here. some mist and drizzle is going to continue. and the fog is going to stick around for most of us during the overnight hours. but tomorrow, that fog will give way to sunshine during the day. and temperatures will respond nicely because of that. and the thing is, after we get rid of these storms, pretty mild air mass is coming our way. it's not coming down from the arctic. this is coming in from the pacific. and by nature of it being an an a pacific air mass. the winds will be light again tomorrow. they kick up again during the afternoon. maybe 5 to 10 knots, having to mix up the atmosphere and bring back the return of sunshine. when we do get to sunshine, those temperatures are going up. but tonight, we're going to drop down a couple of degrees. we're still in the 30s because of the fog. tomorrow, though, with the sun getting up to 50. we thought we would get a little higher today because of the fog lifting. but that hasn't really happened. the fog hangs a little tougher. we may only be in the 40s. but the idea is, it's going to be warmer tomorrow. and we're above average for the entire forecast. we'll have that coming up later. >> we're at the end of january. been recovered from the capsized costa concordia, bringing the death toll to 15. this comes as officials get ready to start removing about half a million gallons of fuel from the wrecked ship. anna metranga reports for wjz from giglio, italy. >> reporter: divers searching the costa concordia, found the bodies of more victims on monday. two women were found near the ship's internet cafe. earlier crews set off explosion to remove debris and give rescuers better access. divers must pick their way through obstacles, as they search deep within the ship. >> we are freezing in october. things floating. i mean, trays, tables and so on. >> reporter: italian officials say the damaged cruise liner is stable. so they won't need to stop the search operation in order to begin pumping about half a million gallons of fuel from the vessel. >> we are ready to go. and we are ready to start working. >> reporter: booms have been placed around the ship to contain the fuel in case of a spill. and an oil tanker, with emergency response equipment is on standby. worker says it will take about four weeks to extract all the fuel. >> reporter: the owners of the costa concordia are facing questions about their responsibility for the shipwreck. costa cruises has placed the blame squarely on its captain for sailing too close to the shore. but documents leaked to italian media say captain francesco schettino say doctors the owners encouraged him to do this for publicity. meanwhile, family members of the missing are still on the island, waiting for news about their loved ones. in giglio, italy, anna metranga, wjz eyewitness news. >> passengers. doomed costa concordia plan to file a class-action lawsuit this week against carnival. passengers are seeking half a billion dollars in damages. it's been nearly 40 years since john hinckley tried to assassinate then president ronald reagan. now, a district court is deciding whether he should ever walk free again. >> reporter: under a new proposal, hinckley could be released from a mental hospital where he has lived since 1982. state officials are asking to give hinckley two home visits with his mother. followed by 24 visits. not everyone agrees that hinckley is ready for the unsupervised visits. a secret service agent said he was monitoring hinckley last fall when he stoped and became fascinated with books on presidential assassination. a wicomico high school coach is accused of having sex with one of his students. 43-year-old steven kickins is out-- kibegin gins -- kigins is out on bail. he is accused of having sex with a student in a classroom. during school hours. he took over the volleyball team after the last coach was arrested and convicted of having sex with a student. wjz is learning more about a car accident in anne arundel county that left one person dead. it happened on dorsey road in hanover. police say an unidentified man was walking on the road when he was struck and killed by a car. the driver stoped and waited for police. but the man later died. investigators are blaming the accident on poor lighting and pedestrian error. thrown to safety. two women escaped to safety. andrea fujii has the story from fulton avenue. >> reporter: a grandmother, mother, and 2-year-old, all survived the nearly 20-foot jump. but their house is a total loss. >> reporter: the one-alarm fire broke out at about 6:00 in the morning, in the 300 block of south fulton, startling neighbors. >> i saw the smoke and fire, flames coming from my window because it's right next to mine. >> i saw some fire. and when i woke up, it was kind of scary. >> reporter: inside the row home was a 45-year-old woman, her 21-year-old daughter, and her 2-year-old girl. >> heavy fire and smoke conditions, coming from the first floor of this location. >> reporter: trapped on the first floor, firefighters say the grandmother jumped out of the second-story window. >> reporter: that's when the grandmother threw the toddler out the second story window and jumped out herself. >> reporter: neighbors say they can't imagine how scared the family was. >> that is crazy because i have a 2-year-old boy in the house. it's like so close to home. and i was just telling my boyfriend, that could have been us. >> reporter: all three were taken to different hospitals for injuries suffered from the jumps. the mother also suffered second- and third-degree burns. but everyone is expected to survive. i'm andrea fujii, wjz eyewitness news. >> someone caught the toddler as she fell to the ground. the cause of the fire is under investigation. cleanup effort begins in reno, nevada. firefighters battled through the weekend and contained the blames -- flames that flames that destroyed 21 homes. an elderly man admitted he accidentally started the fire. no word whether he'll face any criminal charges. the cause of death of canadian freestyle skier, sarah burke, has been released. doctors say burke went into cardiac arrest after a skiing accident at a resort in utah. she died a week later. medical experts say the lack of oxygen to her brain during cardiac arrest, caused irreversible brain damage. burke was just 29 years old. in healthwatch, looks like parents aren't protecting their children from the sun's harmful rays. and they could be paying the price. >> reporter: many children are heading down the path to skin cancer. the study looked at 360 children and teens and found that only 25% use sun screen regularly. at the same time, they were also getting a lot of sun exposure. nearly 50% of those surveyed reported at least one episode of sun burn, a factor that can double the risk of developing melanoma. and doctors say it's important to have a skin exam at least once a year and look out for lesions that change a gallon of regular will cost you on average, $3.42. that's up 23 cents from a month ago. last year at this time, we were only paying $3.10. a breakaway amish leader is stuck behind bars, until the straw. >> a judge denied several requests to release sam mullet on bond today. the 66-year-old is facing charges for five beard or hair cutting attacks on are the amish last year. prosecutors say mullet is a risk to flee and that he poses a danger to the community. but mullet claims the government is trying to invoke the memory of a deadly standoff in waco, texas, to keep him locked up. mullet faces several counts including charges of conspiracy, assault, and tampering with evidence and hate crimes that were motivated by religious differences. vic? >> a feud over church discipline allegedly led to those attacks. a sweet 16 party ends in violence. police in antioch say some of the guests were arguing when shots rang out. at least six people were rushed to the hospital, including a 13- year-old and two 16-year-olds. some of those victims were treated for minor injuries, while others required more intensive care. and police are, of course, now investigating the incident. a desperate search is under way after a little girl falls into an icy river in oregon. the 6-year-old was playing in the snow near the water, when she was swept away. authorities say the girl was missing for about an hour, before they finally got word of the incident. they say poor weather and high water conditions have made it difficult for rescue teams. a missing 9-year-old is back from home, after she escapes escapes from her alleged kidnapper. police found the girl in colorado springs. >> reporter: friends and family gather outside the house of a 9- year-old girl, all waiting to welcome her home, after a terrifying ordeal. >> we are sad that it happened to her. >> reporter: police believe 29- year-old jose garcia took the girl while she was walking home from school on thursday. >> i just want my baby girl. >> reporter: police saya friday, garcia's car broke down and a passerby picked him and the victim up and took them to circle ca -- circle k. once there, the little girl, with her face bruised, ran into the store and called 911. >> looked at me, pointed in my eyes, and said, i ain't going nowhere. i'm waiting for my mama. i looked at the guy. he looked me in the eyes, spun around and high-tailed it out of there. >> after all that she went through, she was brave enough to have enough strength to go out of the car and go into a store and be brave enough to speak up. >> reporter: garcia was once the victim's neighbor. his ex-girlfriend said police were already searching for garcia before he allegedly took the 9-year-old. she said garcia picked her daughter up from school earlier in the day and assaulted her. she and her boyfriend called police. >> we notified them and said, this is what's going on. and i think the police just put two and two together and found him. >> reporter: the victim's family is happy she's safe and home, but they know there's a long road ahead of her. >> i hope that she can somehow find a way to work through it. how long that might take, who knows? but i hope one day that she can. >> garcia has a lengthy criminal record that includes drunk driving and criminal trespassing charges. four florida a&m university band members charged with hazing have been expelled. they were arrested after attacking five clarinet players as part of a hazing ritual. the expulsion came two months after drum major robert champion died after a football game. police believe hazing did play a role in his death. tougher standards on tailgating at yale university, following the death of a massachusetts woman, at the harbor yale football game last year. two others injured, after a yale student drove a u-haul truck, through the tailgate area back in november. as a result, kegs will no longer be permitted at university athletic events or functions. oversized vehicles like box trucks will no longer be permitted. the size and color of your dinner ware could be making you eat more. according to the study, the bigger your dish, the bigger your portion will be. and if it matches your plate, you're more likely to eat more. experts recommend using smaller plate and boat -- bowls that contrast with the color of the food. many say george clooney is a shoo-in for best actor. mark steines is in hollywood with more. coming up here on entertainment tonight, george clooney has come a long ways from his win on "er." he has an oscar nomination. now, we can show you george, sounding offer with his fellow front runners. >> i'm not talking about the quality of the product. i was in batman 4. >> we know.
