>> reporter: private first class abdoe admits he was planning an attack on fort hood. he had been awol since july 4th. the room was filled with a large a sennal of -- arsenal of bomb-making materials. a clerk at the gun store where major nidal hassan brought weapons, alerted police to abdoe. private abdoe went awol earlier this month, after being charged with child pornography of the >> major nidal hassan faces a possible offense for the rampage at fort hood. victims identified. three shot to date on nicholas avenue earlier this week. 58-year-old billy ray lovic. and his daughter, tamika gibbs. and 27-year-old michael jones died from gunshot wounds to the head. the bodies of the men were found inside the home. gibbs was alive -- but died at the hospital. a suspected brothel in baltimore county. federal agents bust the business they say was disguised as an asian massage parlor. it happened in overlea. police believe it is part of a prostitution network. >> federal agents used wire taps and gps devices to monitor this. >> reporter: this is surveillance video reportedly from inside one of the massage parlor, fronts for what one of the states calls a multistate prostitution network. they say one of the brothels was right here. the women would come in the back and provide sex to men throughout the night. those who lived nearby knew something was suspicious but never expected -- suspected this. >> we thought it was a massage parlor but it was always open at night. we were like, that's weird. >> reporter: authorities arrested five men in connection with the ring they say stretched from maryland, pennsylvania, new york, new jersey, and right here in the heart of overlea. they say the women would get to keep their trips. many of the women were flown in from asia. the feds say they were illegal aliens. >> basically, they were holding them as indentured slaves. >> reporter: prosecutors say the operation made more than $1 million a year. >> reporter: court records say the women were mostly kept inside the business so as not to draw attention to it. mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> mike also tells us the women reportedly worked several westbounds at one location before being shuffled to the next one. a cat is intentionally set on fire. on tuesday, the burning kitten ran by two men in the 2400 block of lulen avenue. -- lewellen avenue. the cat rolled on the flames and put it out. the cat is burned on both its back and belly. if you have any information about this animal abuse, you're being asked to call 911. the maryland college of arts gets its largest donation ever. a trustee donated $10 million to the school. the money will be used for graduate students and to fund scholarships. clouds move in. and we're expecting more heat. bob is here with the updated numbers from first warning weather. bob? watch update. some upbeat news on the job market helps stocks, despite the debt deadlock in washington. the numbers of americans fell last week to below 400,000 for the first time last month. it's a sign that employers are laying off fewer workers. and for the second straight month, more americans signed contracts to buy homes. pending sales rose 2 1/2%. but experts say that's still not enough to signal a rebound in the weak housing market. higher oil prices pushed exxon mobil's prices up last quarter. the oil giant earned more than $10.5 billion from march to june. that's still less than what wall street was expecting. and ford can't make enough focus cars to keep up with demand. equipment problems have caused a shortage of dashboards. and the company is working to fix the problem. dealers the historic ship was built at baltimore's bethlehem shipyard and launched in 1942. she was one of the heroes of world war ii. captain richard bowman. >> she made 13 trips to the mediterranean. was involved in the invasion of southern france and the battalion campaign. >> she fell into disrepair, until a dedicated group of project liberty ship volunteers brought her to baltimore. >> she was scheduled for scrap. and in the reserve fleet in norfolk. and guys got together and put a plan together and, you know, have been very successful. >> reporter: seeing her arrive was a thrill. for many better chance on saturday. all of these clouds spinning to the north. it's a lot cooler out there. look at all of these showers. new jersey, new york, maybe northern delaware. tomorrow, looks like we'll be just in that southwest flow, long enough for temperatures to spike in the upper 90s. record high tomorrow is 99. it will turn less humid and a slightly cooler air mass for the weekend. koch. here's what people are talking about. britain's simmering phone hacking scandal erupts today. a judge is digging deeper into the case to see if the country needs tougher media regulation. tina kraus reports from london. >> reporter: the british judge, leading the first public hearings into the fine hacking scandal, says he will be demanding evidence from witnesses. >> it may be tempting for a number of people to close ranks and suggest the problem is or was local to a small group of journalists then operating "news of the world." >> the investigation will look into the media's relationship with the public, police and politicians. >> very, very serious. >> parliament-grilled rupert murdoch and his son james last week. journalists said they are accused of hacking the voice mails of murder and terror victims. the government-backed investigations will look into allegations of eavesdropping at other media outlets, too. several journalists are on the panel to help police chiefs, to help expose corrupt practices. >> reporter: police investigations are also under way to hacking and bribery within the force. scotland yard is reenforcing its officers. >> let me assure you, corruption is no way endemic within the police department. >> he regrets senior officers allowed senior executives to wine and dine them. he says an ethical adviser is now instructing the force as scotland yard is working to reenforce its reputation. >> once the public hearings begin in september, britain is giving the panel 12 months to produce its first report. police in norway have called off the search for victims in last week's deadly shooting rampage. meghan mccorkell is in the newsroom with more information. >> reporter: police say they're done combing the island. but forensic experts are searching a nearby lake for victims who may have drowned. police arrested 32-year-old anders brevic on the island. he admitted to shooting 68 people there, and killing 8 others in a bombing in oslo. >> i can now confirm that the search has ended. and he has been handed over to the local protective guards. >> reporter: brevic is now being held in solitary confinement in a prison near oslo. police will interview him for a second time tomorrow, denise. >> thank you, meghan. it is still unclear whether brevic acted alone. will the hotel maid who accused dominique strauss-kahn maid an emotional appeal today. the woman claims strauss-kahn tried to rape her at a hotel in manhattan. but the head of the international monetary fund denies those accusations. prosecutors have denied the maid's cribility -- credibility, but she says she is telling the truth. >> i have heard a lot of things people are calling me. that's why i had to be here. and let people know, a lot of things they say about me is not true. >> diallo's lawyer has promised to file a civil lawsuit against strauss-kahn in the coming days. imagine driving close to 1,000 miles on a single tank of gas. the obama administration wants to do more than imagine it. he wants those cars built. alex demetrick has a look at new fuel economy standards to be announced tomorrow. >> reporter: you have to have it if you want to drive. but what if you could go further. a lot further on a fillup. >> i think that would be terrific. it will save money on gas. >> i'm excited about that. i think it's great if it will happen. >> the obama administration thinks it can and will rule out new on friday. they have already requested 35 miles per tbalon by 2015. the white house wants that to 54.5 miles per gallon in 2025. that may seem a stretch until you see the incentive high gas prices have already created. >> i mean, we just drove down to florida. and last year, i drove my car, got 22 miles a gallon. now, i have a new car. and i was getting 30 miles a gallon. and i was very pleased with that. >> reporter: if technology brings more miles per gallon, will people be able to afford it? it's a question consumers already struggle with. >> people are going to look and say, well, i can get a vehicle that pays 25 miles per gallon for x, or they can get 30. i think they're going to go for the one that has 30. make these cars for sale at a reasonable price. >> electric cars is an example. moving cars at 3 cents a mile, is currently out of most people's price range. but proponents see cheaper battery ahead. >> by 2015, this will actually be cheaper than buying an internal combustion education car. -- engine car. >> reporter: maybe. but right now, ge is looking at something that get faster than 55 miles per gallon. >> according to the study by the research group, environment maryland, cars 60 miles per gallon, could save a driver $9,000 over the life of their car. security concerns at the calvert power plant. federal inspectors reportedly found several unspecified security deficiencies earlier this year. perhaps, they say, the scrutiny may be needed. constellation nuclear energy has already recommended the plan. they have been given 30 days to challenge the finding. 68 marylanders died in the september 11th attacks. and today, we're getting a personal look at the memorial to them. andrea fujii has the story from the inner harbor. >> reporter: the 9/11 memorial of maryland is nearly halfway complete. it's placed, aptly in front of baltimore's world trade center, and will be placed on 9/11, to mark the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. >> i think people will slow down and take a look back at where they were. >> reporter: this is what it will look like. two tons of mangled steel beams from the wreckage, purposely laid on a bed. >> when we lay down in our final resting place, it speaks. >> reporter: that steal should be arriving in late august and is said to have spanned between 94 and 96 floors of the north tower. >> reporter: the tower, maryland 9/11 survivor steve peck escaped. >> the firefighters and police officers who gave their life that day, you know, 30,000 of us got out. >> reporter: maryland victims named will -- names will be carved into the marble. and once the memorial is revealed, everyone will be able to touch part of american history. >> it's an first warning weather. bob? >> a quick look. a few light showers have popped up just across maryland and the pennsylvania line. take a look across northern baltimore, northern harford, and northern carroll and cecil county. very light stuff. it may last about an hour or two, as you can see, that general flow to the southeast. but basically, i'd say from westminster may see some showers between now and 7:00. temperature-wise, take a look at these numbers around the state. we're at 88 degrees right now. 88. but the dew point is up to 91, which may -- excuse me, up to 71, which makes it feel like 94 out there right now. yesterday, we had temperatures about the same as today. but actually in reverse. now, tomorrow, we're going to have to deal with hot temperatures and high humidity. so tomorrow afternoon, from 11:00 to 9:00 p.m. a heat advisory will be in effect. looks like temperatures tomorrow will reach the upper 90s. could break a record. look at only 99, by the way. and the heat index tomorrow, around 105, 106 in the afternoon. one of those days that you must take it easy. up to our north, around the philadelphia region. they have an extensive heat warning going into line, up to 175. that's due to the earlier accident at 175, which is now on that right-hand shoulder. as far as accidents go, southbound on the jones falls expressway, between the beltway and ruxton road. also an accident in the white hall area. old york road at burke. and at pylesville, blocking all lanes. let's now take a live look. you can see, things still very heavy there on the beltway, treatment on world hepatitis, promising news for the millions who suffer. a desperate search for an 11-year-old girl in a small new england town. and it's a warm, humid afternoon. more extreme heat is on the way. and bob turk is -- has the forecast coming up. at least 67 people are dead or missing after landslides and flash floods hit south korea. it is the heaviest rainfall. almost 5,000 people have been forced from their homes. cars are destroyed. most houses without power. the damage from the storm is expected to be hundreds of millions of dollars. the military has been called in to lead a rescue and cleanup mission. well, four children are shot after a gunman opened fire in a florida public park. two masked men in cars shot at a crowd of 70 people in miami. investigators believe gang members were the targets. bullets grazed a child as young as 3 years old. police are searching for the shooters. they say it is a miracle no one was killed. the fbi and a police rescue team are searching for an 11- year-old girl missing from new hampshire. >> denise, selina katz was last seen using the family computer monday night. when her parents went to wake her the next morning, she was gone. friends and family have posted plyers. helicopters and a k-9 units are searching the area around the home. police say there is no indication that cass ran away or that another family member took her. >> thank you, meg meghan. a man in arizona confesses to killing his girlfriend then living with her corpse. >> reporter: detectives say he beat his girlfriend to death when he found out she was cheating on him. then he liched with the corpse for two months. the victim's father tipped police off when he found the corpse. a breakthrough treatment that is saving lives. >> i was looking at sirosis, liver transplant, or maybe even dying from it. >> reporter: it wasn't until 1992, after slightly elevated liver enzymes and increasing exhaustion, the doctor finally gave eric a diagnosis. he
