breaking news. a light rail train has struck a car. the train collided with a passenger vehicle. one occupant in the vehicle was taken to the hospital, but there's no word on the victim's condition just yet. a second tornado confirmed right here in maryland yesterday brought severe weather, as you know, knocking down trees and power to hundreds of thousands. suzanne colins is in carroll county where some families can't go home until repairs are made. >> that's correct. we knew we had a tornado in carroll county. >> the play house was gone. the neighborhood's shed trashed. the serious damage on the house was where the pine tree apparently caught the back corner foundation. >> reporter: bob had to respond to the emergency at his sister's home. she was shocked to learn her home was struck by flying trees and strong winds while the family was away on vacation in south carolina. >> then they turned the tv on and saw the picture of their house that had damage. so they called me to secure their house until they could get home. >> reporter: the national weather service examines the damage with a carroll county emergency worker and disermed that the line of -- determined that the line of destruction does confirm a tornado passed through. >> reporter: trees came down all over especially west of baltimore. it's clear they were ripped apart or pulled from the ground with great force by the roots. one family in carroll county says two cars are now wrecked. one's windshield impaled by a tree, the other crushed while a granddaughter was inside in the driveway. >> when it let up, she got out of the car and running in the house all crying and thankful that everybody was safe. >> reporter: just to clarify, that was howard county where the cars were smashed. here in carroll county it was three homes that were damaged by that tornado. back to you. >> thanks for that live report. as for today, here's a live look outside. what's in store for tonight? bernadette woods is live with a look at first warning live doppler radar. it's humid, bernadette. >> first we're going to take you back to last night to show you what happened. that line of thunderstorms produced all of the damage both in frederick and carroll county. one more loop we'll take you through to show you the bright colors. that's when the tornadoes did touch down. so let's show you this scale, enhanced fujita scale. it's coming in as an ef here on the lower end, but you see the damage was there. for the second tornado in frederick county, they haven't officially rated it yet, but they are saying winds of about 100 miles per hour. that puts it as an ef1 on the scale. carroll county winds estimated at 75 to 85 miles per hour. it was about 1 mile in length. now for the new market one, about 100 mile-per-hour winds were reported. right now, we're going to take you back to first warping doppler radar -- warning doppler radar. we've had thunderstorms go through. this is the biggest around the area right now to wjz.com. we bring you breaking news in sports tonight. baltimore raven derrick mason is back out of retirement. mason announced his retirement july 13th, but it seems he's had second thoughts. the wide receiver called ravens' owners this morning and he expects to hit the field tomorrow morning. sam saunders will have more coming up in sports. a baltimore city police officer is on administrative leave tonight after a police- involved shooting in northwest baltimore. police say an officer was on routine patrol early this morning when the alarm went off at a convenience store. it happened in the 4700 block of garrison boulevard when the officer noticed the store's door had. pried open. >> upon entering the convenience store, a suspect, who was wearing a mask, lunged at police with a knife-like object. police officers fired once striking the suspect in the head. >> that knife-like object turned out to be a long screwdriver. the suspect is reportedly in critical condition tonight. flames break out in the brooklyn neighborhood this afternoon. baltimore city firefighters responded to the 5700 block of stafford road. firefighters are able to get it under control. the fire is still under investigation. and a man faces serious charges for a bomb scare that shut down the main terminal of new york's la guardia airport. scott mccann was acting bizarre. a search turned up materials that looked like a bomb. mccann now faces charges including making terroristic threats and having eight false bombs. the u.s. citizens were hiking in iraq when they crashed into iranian territory. >> reporter: iranian state tv is reporting three american tourists who were hiebing close to the border -- hiking close to the border nier iraq and iran have been detained. reports say that two men and a woman were this a popular hiking area where the border is not clearly marked. the trio may have mistakenly wandered into iran. their last wores to a friend waiting at the hotel were, we are surrounded by armed men. the state department is working as hard as they can to obtain the release of the hikers whose identities have not been released. >> why are we speaking out? >> reporter: roxanna, a journalist and u.s. citizen seen at a human rights protest in chicago was recently arrested and held by the iranian government for three months. iran is still experiencing protests nearly seven weeks after controversial election results brought hundreds of thousands to the streets. the government has just begun mass trials against demonstrators. president ahmadinejad will be sworn into his new term on wednesday. >> the u.s. state department says it's counting on the swift who represent americans in tehran to seek access to the americans being held tonight. and cutting almost 200 jobs and freezing of hiring with officials trying to close a $38 million gap eliminating 175 jobs including 24 layoffs. the cuts are expected to save the system $12 million. officials say the positions include adjunct and part-time faculty. surprising study released this week says the number of infant deaths is increasing. as gigi barnett reports, the slow economy may play a small part. >> reporter: the number of death among maryland's babies is steadily climbing according to a new report recently published. the study is called kids count 2009. it tracks the well being of children nation wade in several areas. it then compares the findings from state to state. dan jackson is one of the fellows who works on it researching a slew of issues that affect children. >> how many children die in their first year of life? how many babies are born low birth weight? how many young people are dropping out of school? >> reporter: jackson says maryland's overall child well being dropped despite the status as one of the wealthiest in the nation. >> there's been a stubborn and persistent gap between the wealth of the state and the children. >> reporter: the most alarming trend is the infant mortality rate. according to the report, for every 1,000 babies born, almost 8 die before they turn a year old. back in 2006, maryland's infant mortality rate was 18% higher than the national average. some parents say that's cause to study the report. >> kind of shocking and just in today's world where you can find out information at the click of a button with the internet and things like that. i mean, i can't believe people aren't aware or educated on what's going on with the kidded. >> reporter: the data collected is from 2006 and 2007. that's before the recession. as a result, the casey foundation believes there may be some information missing and children's health may be even more at risk. in baltimore, i'm gigi barnett, now back to you on tv hill. >> thank you, gigi. the report slept nearby. a joyous occasion for a church after fire nearly destroyed it. soccer, music, food and fun. i'm ron matz at polly western high school. it's the baltimore international festival. the story when "eyewitness news" continues. nearly a month after the murder of a wealthy florida couple, police aren't ruling out the possibility that it was, in fact, a contract hit. july 9, bird and melanie billings were murdered in their home. 9 of the 16 whirn were home. one of seven suspect as rested in the case was paid $100,000 for the murders. police have yet to confirm that. a chicago church rises from the ashes just months after a fire causes severe damage to its building. on friday, the first wedding was held at the holy name cathedral. the church suffered millions in damages in february. the building, which houses the city's archdiocese now remodeled marble, glass and precious wood. the church's pastors are excited the sanctuary is back in use. sir paul mccartney will appear before more than 60,000 fans tonight at fedex field in prince george's county. the concert comes 45 years after the beatles played their first american concert in d.c. it will be mccartney's third stop of the summer tour and amazingly, there are a few seats left tonight. not for long. if you are looking for something else to do this weekend, you might want to head to polly western high school. that quickly. you can see it creeping up into southern parts of baltimore. we'll have the forecast when we come back. welcome back, everybody. looking at that shot it's great in the city right now. we want to show you first warning doppler radar. there's a thunderstorm just off to the south that may be affecting the city shortly. this one is barely moving, actually. it's generally drifting off to the east-northeast. we're seeing the heavier part of it with the downpours just to the west of severna park right around doors corner. this is moving off to the east- northeast only at about 10 miles per hour. let's switch it over and show you because we've had a couple of other thunderstorms around earlier today. those made their way off to the north making their way through the city off into pennsylvania. at this point, winds are generally out of the south push in that dresh slowly. there is a flash flood warning in effect for maryland. if any more thunderstorms form and move in that direction, they will put down a lot of rain because there's a lot of moisture in the air. dew points are in the 70s. that's really tropical outside. they are just so thick outside. temperatures have come down with the thunderstorm going through to 76 in baltimore. 82 degrees right now at the ocean, and 86 in cull berland. here -- cumberland. here's the storm that moved through yesterday. it's close enough that a few thunderstorms have started to form. as this moves closer, the strong storms could become severe. any watches or warnings come out, we'll pass them along to you both on the wjz.com and tv side. it's something we'll be monitoring. here's the next front. monday could have a couple of showers still lingering into monday. when the front comes, there is another to follow midweek. tonight, any thunderstorms out there will be dying down. they are ice dated -- isolated. then more thunderstorms could be stronger. 85 for our high. over the next few days, going to 88
