husband threatened to kill her and set her home on fire. wjz is live tonight. how the woman signaled for help. kelly? >> reporter: vic, the police say the man ransacked the house and then doused it in gasoline. and then he waited for his estranged wife to come home so he could kill her. firefighters waited on guard as a home wreaked of gasoline. the homeowners, a building contractor and his estranged wife had been inside. the police say the man tied up his wife, telling her he was going to kill them and set the house on fire. >> obviously it could have been a tragic situation. the home is isolated but nonetheless the level of policemannable liquid and the suspect's clear intend he stated reportedly he intended for it to be a tragic situation. >> reporter: someone kelt calling the woman's cell phone and she convinced her estranged husband to answer it or else someone would come looking for her. she seized the chance to send a text message to a friend who then called 911. >> as you saw the officer closing in to make the forced entry the suspect turned the weapon on himself and shot himself with his own weapon. the officer did not fire his weapon. >> two or three fire departments and ambulances. the ambulance was not here long and took somebody with it. i did not see who they took it. must have been him. >> reporter: the police do not have a motive. neighbors believe money could have been a factor. >> he is a builder not building. he has an expensive house and has to pay the mortgage. >> reporter: dean's company had recently been sued and the settlement was just announced. the couple's 5300 square foot home is for sale. >> she had been receiving disturbing e-mails and allegations he had been coming to -- coming around her inappropriately that he had been directed not to. >> reporter: three days earlier a police officer was called to the house for domestic dispute. it was the same officer that showed up tonight and so it actually helped because he murdering his wife. phillip reed choked his 83-year- old wife in the bathroom of their home. -- bedroom, the daughter, outside, heard her mother's screams. the couple was arguing. they have been married for 47 years. >> a mother is accused of leaving her 3-year-old child in a car while she used drugs in a mottle bathroom. the police say that she checked into the mottle 6 at 3:00 this morning. four hours later the police found the little girl strapped into a car seat and she was asleep in a bathroom with heroin and drug paraphernalia, tonight she is in custody with her daughter in the care of relatives. we have breaking news espn zone, one of the most recognizable restaurant chains is largely shutting its doors. our media company says the future of the harbor location is not known tonight. walt disney company that owns the chain plans to shutdown most of the locations but for the tkeuz me property such as tkeudz tphaoe land. the harbor location opened the first espn zone restaurant to open. 500 workers will be getting pink slips, the solo plant where they make those drinking cups is shutting down. wjz is live at the plant ino in owings mills. if you combine this with the state of the economy means they will have a tough read ahead. the solo cup company will be shutting down. the announcement was made on tuesday that the plant and one in massachusetts and one in missouri are also closing. one employee says solo started furloughing last year. >> we knew it was coming. we knew just not when they were going to announce it. we knew a year ago. >> they make paper and plastic cups and containers sold in a variety of stores. the plant is scheduled to close in 2012 and 540 workers there will lose their jobs. the company insists outsourcing is not the reason for the shutdowns. >> this was not an easy decision for us to make. because we know it effects the lives of our people and their families and it was very important to us to give them as much notice as we could. >> reporter: a spokesperson for cup maker solo says they are closing three plants because of improved production efficientency at other plants across the country. that fact is little consolation for employees here in maryland who are losing their jobs. >> just like anybody else we need our job. we are distraught over it, i guess it is not like things were not happening before that that maybe something was going on. >> i think it actually sucks. a lot of people need jobs, you know, the economy it is already messed up. >> one employee that has been there for 20 years says he is disappointed but gives credit to management for keeping it open this long. >> they are good people to open it. and doing the best for it. and things have just a way of falling apart. >> employees say it is not a time to be negative. >> going to take off these clothes, put on clean clothes and groom myself up and go out there and find something else, man. >> solo promisees to give them 60 days year sentence for murder in peru. legal experts believe now that he is in custody new evidence may shake out in the holloway case. he gave a number of conflicting statements about his disappearance in under estimating how much crude is spewing out of the leak. they are refuting the reports saying it is getting half of the crude going out but saying it is less. it can be seen on the wildlife, rescuers are working to save as many birds as possible. of the more than 1,000 birds recovered in louisiana, only a third are still alive. while the effects of the spill have not reached maryland's
