and what the conviction means for the city of baltimore. hello everyone i'm vic carter. >> and i'm denise koch. >> here is what people are talking about. there are calls for the resignation of mayor dixon. mike helgren is live, but we begin with borba. >> the message is that there's nobody above the law. >> reporter: a jury of nine women and two men sends a strong message to city hall. mayor dixon is guilty of using gift cards intended for the needy. minutes after the verdict, mayor dixon reacted. >> what i would say to the city of baltimore, is that the city will still continue to move forward. we will still continue to stay very focused. we have a trying budget hearing this afternoon. and i know that my cabinet, my staff and everyone who worked for the betterment of this city will continue to be committed as i will be committed to continue on with the focus of what needs to happen. >> we are disappointed in that the jury acquitted the mayor of three charges but convicted. the mayor used five gift cards to buy items later seized from her home. the state prosecutor reacted to the verdict. >> it's a sad day. >> reporter: why do you say that? >> any time a mayor is convicted is a sad day for the people of baltimore. >> reporter: he definitely said he is pressing ahead with a perjury case against her. that is set to go to trial in march. denise, back to you. >> thank you the end they felt it was a tough decision but the right one. you feel justice was served in this case is this. >> pretty much. >> it wasn't based on our opinion, it was base on the evidence. i feel we did a good decision. >> reporter: jury number three said not hearing from developer ron ron lipscum caused some problems. >> we were confused because they gave us some information then they took it back. so we were scribbling and scrapping through information we had. >> reporter: but she said it did not bother her that the mayor did not take the stand in her defense. >> it was brought up that she was the mayor, that she is an important person. >> reporter: for everyone in that jury room, it was an emotional decision. >> you feel you have someone's life in our hand. there comes a time when we had to put things aside and look right and wrong. >> reporter: the jurors say it came down to the facts. >> i personally believe that you do the crime, you pay the time. and if you commit something, i don't think you should get away with it if nobody else can. >> i took it from the beginning as open as any juror should and just, fair field, neutral. jurors actually deliberated longer than they heard testimony. they say opinions were constantly shifting in that jury room and the turning point was when they learned that a partial verdict was acceptable. reporting live in courthouse think a lot of people are confused right now what this means, what this does mean is that baltimore is right on the cuffs of a transition. and i'll leave and reserve whether it's a good transition or not to the citizens of the city. >> reporter: do you think the mayor should step down? >> i think we need to leave the process to the voters. the work that each of us do as elected officials and public service prepares us for leadership and for any expanded role. >> reporter: city council members are debating how to make up a new $126 million shortfall. hearing about such a huge budget gap on any day would be good news. but add in the mayor's conviction and it's a very different feel here at the city council. >> the mayor has worked very hard to keep this from being a distraction to city business. but the truth of the matter is it has been. >> of course, the city will go on. she has brought a lot of brightness to it. and i'm a very sad person. >> the jury has spoken. >> i didn't and that's baltimore voters. and tonight they're speaking out on the jury's decision. a jury convicts mayor dixon of one count of taking gift cards meant for the needy. it's a misdemeanor, but a mayor crime for the mayor. if this is a black eye, what is lawmakers that are cheating on their lives. i think it's a shame, i think it's a shame that she won't be in office anymore. but like i said, i just hope that it sends a clear message to anybody else in any elected position that the city deserves a lot better from its politicians. >> i don't know, because i wasn't in the courtroom. that's how the process works, and i think she should have lost her job. >> reporter: a political science professor at john hopkins professor thinks this will happen next. >> it might be better for her not to resign the budget. the city needs to trim $100 million from next year's budget. the slow housing market are dragging down revenue taxes for the city. it's possible the city will have to raise city taxes to was investigating a stolen car case early this morning, recognized the suspect maurice clemmons. clemmons was accused of killing four officers in the a coffee shop sunday. the suspect would not surrender so he fired several rounds killing the 37-year-old. at least six people have been arrested for allegedly helping clemmons elude authorities. fellow officers talk about the end. >> another tragic time has come upon all of us and we're just glad that this is over right now. clemmons did have a serious gunshot wound to the stomach. he was also carrying a handgun which belonged to one of the slain officers. an iraqi journal ist who threw his shoe at former president george bush became a target himself. he was almost hit by a flying shoe. the shoe appeared to be thrown by another iraqi man who was escorted from the building. he was released from jail in september, became a hero to many in the arab war for his protest in president bush's final visit. and president obama went prime time tonight to defend his strategy. standing in front of an audience, he spoke about his plan. >> to prevent its capacity to threaten america in the future. but it will be clear to the afghan government and more clear to the afghan people. that they will ultimately be responsible for their own people. >> some republicans warn that sends the enemy a message to simply wait it out. the price students gather for a message from ray rice. the message, education is the key. rice spoke about the importance of staying in school, the event was organized by the nonprofit group city aces. which
