People, better stewards of the earth . What is it about people when someone can say the harshest things and they can forgive them. Even when someone has taken their loved one and put on death row, a mother or parent will say i dont believe in the death penalty. What is it within people we find that hope, find a belief there is something greater and gives us something to look forward to the next day . We have invited some of the most well known leaders throughout the country to join us for a discussion how do we come together . What do we do to diffuse the anger and build a better generation for our children and example for the rest of the world to very distinguished panel, ruth baker bitis, lawyer, we welcome you to the broadcast. Thank you for joining us. Thank you. Gail anderson, pastor, christ redeemer ame church here in washington, d. C. Lee bahcounsel of hindu church. Rev reverend, we welcome you all to our broadcast. Lets talk about what it is that when you see the anger in the world, when you see the kinds of things that represent the worst of man kind, how do you get people to see the good left in the world . Well, i think religion, that is what we are talking about, plays a very great part. I am here using religion in a the very broadest sense. I am on the executive board of the metropolitan washington interfaith conference along with dr. Holderness. Purpose of our organization 38 years ago, founded to recognize no matter how we look at god or faith, there is among all of us a unity of a higher goal, higher purpose within us. I think this is a good time to mention as we are talking, we are very proud we have 11 different major faith groups in are from the abrahamic faith. It is very important in todays world we are meeting and comforting people from all over the world, that a person such as lee has as much faith as the rest of us although her faith is not is traditionally abrahamic faith, in fact one of the oldest religions zuro, also called farsee in india. Predates the old testament. We all have faith. Reaching out together on the basis of good in us, our soul is what is important. Armstrong dr. Holderness, if children cant find it in the church, community, schools, where have they learned it . I am originally from south carolina. I am from the forgiving kind of people. I am a christian. I am pastor ame church and also a lawyer, graduated from howard in 81. Separation of church and state also. It is not based on a religion, not based on anything formed by man. It is a spirit. In the book of john. All of us know the scriptures. We truth. It is not based on whether or not there is an iraq, or jewish person or sikh or muslim in the house. If we were to take all of our hearts out and put them on the table and all walked in and came back in with our hearts we wouldnt no which heart belonged to which. It is about us. An innate spirit. Has nothing to do with religion. If you go right and teach right, people will do right. When i was growing up there was prayer in school. It seemed based on my experience, children who have prayer in school in those days acting a little bit better. There was a different kind of respect. I have been in the school system, children have no respect. Parents have no respect. Babies are making babies. When you talk about religion, they are not getting it at home. Millennials and 30 years not going to church. Where do they get it . That is an open end question. Armstrong hold that point. How do you find your better angles . We are going to come back very important question. Dont want to miss this conversation. To tune in today. [000 10 23;00] astrong welcome back. You are a armstrong you are hindu, what kind of impact when you have certain extremists, the few who hijacked the muslim faith people believe islam is not a religion of peace. It is a religion that beheads people and kill innocent people in the name of religion. How we cant claim islam with a broad brush and separate extremists from that faith. Thank you for having me in the show so far. I am a hindu. You are talking about islam. All the religion, it is about the faith. What is the faith . It is god. Every religion, we turn to god. God is so huge. He is can take any different points we want to. God is there for all of us. We turn to and get t god is good, we need got. That is why. We all turn to god. How do we get everyone to turn into in direction . It is going to be a very difficult task. It is achievable if we take some effort and get us to that point and say, how do we do this . How do we embrace ourselves . God has been a different way, as christianity. Belief and understanding of truth, that is what about. Brings us to the path of good. As you listen to this conversation, what role do you think television and media an entertainment plays to the choices think make. Sexuality, all this freedom, if you feel good, do it. There are no rules. What do you think is the impact of the pop culture, older generation find themselves that really Impact Society overall . I think the impact of pop culture is huge and i think overtime it is diluting the when i was growing up for example, i am in my 70s, we didnt have that pop culture input. By in large peoples families were the main source of our cultural consciousness for those people involved in religion in some way the family and the religious organizations was a part of that. So anymore pop culture whether it is music or the internet. I would put the internet in there three times. Huge big influence. I think that partly what we in churches need to be thinking about is to to establish an alternative culture, to show the our kids there is something out there besides the pulp culture. Armstrong let me get to very not sensitives that should be i dont know if you believe the bible says homosexuality is a sin. Molestation is a sin. We live in a society where we sometimes dont want to call what is right right and what is wrong, wrong. I know what it is for me. How is it that you navigate these sensitive issues you dont lose your congregation, tell people right from wrong and stick with not necessari revision of gods word but reinforce without compromising and offending people in the process . As a pastor and member of a congregation of samesex marriag marriages, we believe in original sin. Dont ask, dont tell policy, if you go in our churches, unfortunately, i dont want to label anyone, a lot of our musicians and different other persons of a sexual persuasion are in leadership positions in the church. It is not questioned. Nobody deals with it from that level unless it is a blatant exposure. We have a society it has been e has become acceptable to be bad. Off show. Armstrong most celebrated. We have glamourized sex. You can make a sex video and become a star and become a respectable person. How do we approach children who are growing up in this society to say that is not the right thing. When i was growing up, lucy and ricardo slept in twin beds. Now it is morning, noon, night. Doesnt matter. What they call old school, we perhaps need to go back to some of the old school. We have exposed everything. Anything goes. We are anything goes society. I wanted to question, quest armstrong hold that point, dont go aw how do you balance the issue of women . Rape, incest, what about women that may see it as a form of taking a pill . How do you make people responsible and the womb is a sacred place. Some people never recover. Has to be something deeper going on in their conscience than what these organizations are telling them at the time. As a woman and parent, i lost a child, i know how it is to lose a child. And i came to this country when i was very, very young. It was an arranged marriage. Didnt have much to live on. We had to work hard and i got pregnant. When the baby was born it had spina bifida. It was a hard life. I went the extreme, now own business, from one extreme to another. I can relate very, very well. It is good for the education process. As a woman, you have rights, yes, you can have a bill and get the baby out. It is the bonding. That is what god has given us, it is a nature, a process, that is how the relationship is built. As a mother, you have the deep feeling and that will never go away. When i had the child and she is dead, i still remember what i went through and the faces in front of my eyes. If you talk about abortion, of course it is a persons right as a mother, as a woman, it is a very special thing. It will never go away. Again we all go to god. It is nature. God has created everything for a reason. If you strongly believe in it. If i just may, i am not convinced people look at abortion just like a pill. I lost a child in utero at nine months. From the first moment you know you are pregnant, there is a bond. I dont think it is my business to tell somebody else what to do. I really dont. I think everybody has a right to do what they want to do. Even a minister . I think a minister should counsel. Should a minister not instruct right wrong . They may tell them the belief in their religion. Armstrong you think in different religions you should tell them other things . Every religion has a another religion there are certain instances perhaps, rape, perhaps knowing that the child is going to never going to be a sentiment being. This is not something that i think anybody really can take lightly. I know it is very easy. Armstrong do you believe there is one universal truth . I believe there are many ways of looking at the one universal truth. Armstrong is there one truth . Depends on what we mean by is there one truth at each point in your life . Probably is a truth at that point. I dont think we as human beings know that. Armstrong do you there are Ten Commandments or suggestions . You are using the word truth, i as a jewish person am not familiar. Armstrong i speak to you as a human being who has experienced life. We are going to take a break. I am armst we live as we live as christians, jews, muslims. Woe live in this tension between the desire to assimilate into the societies and at the same time, retain our distinction from that society and usually, that is either linguistic, either from some particular country, very much so religiously because 1. 2 billion catholics, yet all over the world. Come together under one religion, so many different cultural distinctions in food, customs, etc. It is amazing how they all come under that reason religion. Armstrong i am going to disappoint my guests and uplift them at the same time. We are out of time. We have our one hour fore rum. We are going to have you back to the studio. It is too important to stop here. You planted a seed for continuation. Much respect for all that you do, thank you for joining us for this edition of the Armstrong Williams show. Thank yo rightside.
