Autria 6 00 straight up, lets can chew over to our two meteorologists who have been working hard for you since, like, midnight, you guys . Is that when you book up . Veronica pretty much, making our way down the icy streets. Just so much refreeze. To of the things and want take a look at today is how many hours each day our temperatures will be above freezing. That really is going to be so critical, that and the higher sun angle and how much melting we will see out of this as we approach friday, which by the way autria is the luck of the irish on our side or not . Eileen lets get people started with where this storm is. We have a coastal southeastern virginia. Moving going to be further towards the north. Some of you waking up, looking out your window in saying that you guys said that there would be more snow. As we alluded to yesterday the rain snow line pushed farther towards the west. We have snow, sleet, some freezing rain and plain rain coming across the area. We have seen differing reports from josh knight in who said that there was some snow falling and some of it mixing with sneak their sleet in leesburg. If you are hearing those ice pellets, that is sleet, compacting the snow that initially fell as you were going to bed last night. Down 301, you are still seeing little bit of that wintry weather heading into Southern Maryland as well. How much have we seen so far . Is not tooation incredible. But were not done yet. Veronica johnson takes over to show us how much more we can expect later today. Veronica between noon and 3 00, not much at all, trace amounts coming 3 00 until 9 00 as we continue to see some wraparound snow showers and squalls coming to the area, the bulk of it tapering off by noon today. The freezing line here, anything to the north is likely to be snow, gaithersburg, westminster, anything south likely to still see some mixing. Up toe get past 9 00 and noon, thats the system off the coast with cold air get us a better chance to see the accumulating snowfall with light stuff coming through for the rest of the evening there. Six more days until spring, julie . Just a couple of minutes, really nice warming coming our ways over the next couple of days. Believe, six more days of spring and we are dealing with sleet and snow this morning. Busy right out here continuing northbound, this is where we had an accident at duke street and it looks like it is still there in the hov lanes. They are working, we just heard from vdot, they are working on 395 this morning. Give them plenty of space, because after they moved to the area you got a nice piece of roadway to travel on. The leftk was tying up side of the highway. Here is some trouble at fair oaks, traffic squeezing by using the right side. Also a low hanging tree a long 301 on the left side, we are also dealing with that and as the sleet continues to fall it brings down the branches. Kenilworth avenue is the result of a truck accident that 410. We have wires down there as well. Back in the next 10 minutes with another update on 95 in virginia. The snow is coming down fast. Larry drivers spun out on the road. Snow thousand out everywhere, it has been quite a mess. Autria john gonzales, it is still coming down there in john since we last what feels like stronger wind. It is a harsh reality that winter is not over just yet. It is a snow day here on friday, a shock to a lot of folks. Snow weook at all the have gotten. I got to use a lot of muscle, maybe even the arm and the brush at this point to brush the snow off of this car here. To give you an idea, take a look at this parking lot here, it has times. Owed a number of you can see the huge mountain on the other end of the parking lot. Here is the problem. You are clearing the way, which is good, and thats the responsibility of residential withininess owners here, eight hours, daylight hours, once the storm stops you got to get out here and do a constantine is doing, shovel. Whats going to get tricky is, you see, all of the stuff that my foot is in right now, when this refreeze happens, this is going to be a big chunk of ice and it will be dangerous to walk down the roads and on the streets as well. We had a chance to talk to a plow truck driver earlier. Here is what he had to say about the conditions that he experienced this morning. Its icy, a little bit. Took 45 minutes from falls church. Normally take you . Five minutes. Suzanne obviously, he was taking some extra time on the roads this morning to make sure that he got to his final destination in one plea in one piece. That is what . Very julie wright has been telling us about accidents across the area. We have been hearing reports of just that, lots of incidents of folks getting out, over driving if you will. Quite a bit of snow, we are riding behind a plow and it is giving us some extra snow flying into the air, but the trucks are still moving by just fine. On the left side of your screen its moving by pretty well. Not too far from hagerstown but the snow is really coming down in this area. D. C. Is where we were going through the sleet, changing into snow, thats where i got out and measured it. Not official measurements, tough to find a good spot, but six to seven inches in some places. Where it has come down fluffier and have year for a lot longer we had some big totals, but the Road Conditions are just about of same, it is a thin layer snow and ice and as soon as we got out of rosslyn, from d. C. , heading along 270, everywhere was dealing with the same icy getting west of town. Keep that in mind, if you have to get out of the house this morning its went to take you longer, and make sure that you take your time. Autria we have crews all over the dmz and our complete coverage continues right now. 6 30 this morning. Larry it has been a busy morning, we have been on this for hours, and veronica and johnson were hard at it. Josh knight has been out in storm trak 7, liggitt, who has been in, and in a couple of hours the entire route will be with us. We are still seeing some snowfall across the area and some great compacting of the snow that has fallen since the system began producing snowfall. How much more . That is what a lot of folks want to know. It is about four inches now that we are getting reports of in frederick, maryland, locations with higher snowfall amounts from noon until 3 00. And the not very much more after 3 00 today. We just took a look back at the moisture that fell with the system, you are looking at the totals in the deficit. Seen from the snowfall, the deficit greatly reduced now with just this one event alone. The cold windis that follows and the icy wind after 11 a. M. Today. Road conditions, not the best at all in any way down to Southern Maryland. Julie . Lanes you will find that are open traveling each way, but those elevated passages tend to freeze before anything else. We already have accidents on the road. Looking closely at the overpass, one of them is on the beltway at 66. Accident on the inner loop headed south on the left side of the road. You can see the flashing lights here. Low hanging trees on the right side. A low hanging tree or 301 on the left side of the highway, so again, if you dont have to be out here on the roads, stay put, they are definitely icy. Wires are down as a result of the crash with only the right side getting by. Tossing it over to sam sweeney in mobile trak 7. What are the conditions like where you are . We are on for east just before marlboro pike take a live look, this is behind us, you can see the spray that we will be dealing with on the road. Not a lot of snow accumulation, but on the surface street there are flushing conditions on the main highways with icy, slick spots, a lot of rain, puddles, and standing water. In front of us you can see people moving at full speed. Not a lot of cars out right now. School has been canceled, many people not going to work or telecommuting. The volume is light and it is of course, early, this is an icy situation and you can tell by looking at the trees that it is completely covered in ice and tricky for drivers. You mentioned those low hanging trees. Branches are low hanging, that will be a problem for truckers as we move on with the morning and in Prince Georges County it is mostly rain, freezing rain this morning. A that is the latest, live from mobile track seven. Suburbsrom the eastern to the western suburbs, what a difference a few miles can make. Autria Horace Holmes has more. Horace sam was talking about the ice and the rain. Here it is snow, sleet, and a lot of wind. You can see how windy it has gotten since we were last with you about 45 minutes ago. Wanted to come in and show you how the snowplows have been working very hard here on route seven. The folks here at this roy rogers on route seven just came in. I wanted to talk to karen, who came in from West Virginia this morning. How was that commute . Slick in spots, but it was ok, i made it. I took it slow and easy and i made it here. Leads thats and leesburg were not bad at all. Not bad, but the ramps were slick coming in. I come in off the king exit and it was like a little slick coming down through there. But other than that, yeah, it was fine. They were just starting to plow through here, coming to the square up there. Good enough. Those guys are here to serve early. Come on in, come on in. All right, thats the situation out here in leesburg. Its nice and toasty in here. Outside it is very cold and windy. Back to you guys. Donald trump is one of those watching the snow. He met with the mayor of d. C. And the metro general manager last night in the audience. They discussed all the preparations for the storm. Larry the president tweeting this late last night everyone listen to local officials as the major storm approaches. From the white house to the tidal basin, threatening the Cherry Blossoms, potential damage to those flowers and what might happen this year that hasnt in a century. Autria it will likely be the end of the week before we know how the Cherry Blossoms fared in the snow and cold weather. Snow can hurt the buds, but low temperatures can do far more damage. We have reportedly reached the bloom every year since 1921. Lets see how things are working in looking in hagerstown this morning, where josh knight is this morning. Josh . You can see the Road Conditions, where around hagerstown they have picked up up to four inches of snowfall on some of the roads, which you can see still need to be plowed and taken care of. Im sure that they will be getting to that this morning. Is rain mixinge in that way. Big story, too, the wind for today is just getting and is only going to be increasing throughout the day with 30 mile per hour wind gusts. Manassas, 35, areas closer to the water, potomac, st. Marys, calvert county, under a wind advisory for today continuing for the afternoon hours and i think the highest wind will be right here, around lunchtime, the mid part of the day. , 25 to 30 mileperhour wind gusts before they come down. Tracking what is again, snow and sleet for half the area right now with freezing rain coming into the system and i think the best chance for accumulating snow will be after 9 00 this morning, up until noon to get more of it wrapping into the system, as it has been so wet. The roads are slick, icy, refreeze is coming our way tonight, the next couple of days looking i see before we get to friday, when we will release start to be warming up and seeing a lot of the melting. You got quite a few accidents that have come in . Have had our hands full since the show started this morning. A number of accidents and now [no audio] and also make note that we had a tree down on the left side of the highway. Still slow moving on kenilworth avenue as a result of the crash. 410 with the right side of the highway getting by. In on a also checking saturday schedule, trains operating every 12 minutes. The green line towards greenbelt, experiencing delays towards west hyattsville. That is the traffic watch, back in the next 10 minutes with another update on the roads and rails. Yeah. Checking the departure board, anything to the northeast remains canceled. 6 40 five, Stormwatch Team coverage is in full swing. Larry thats right, reporters are on your side, fanned out from here to fairfax and ocean city. We want to get started with john gonzalez. It has been piling up by you all morning long . Fall the snow continues to and the sleet continues to smack us in the face. It is a miserable morning here. It appears to me that frederick will bear the brunt, when all is said and done. Not sure if we will get that foot of snow, but take a look at the intersection of shockley driving and rookies pike and what it looks like this is snowcovered after hours and hours of plows coming through here and plowing the snow, especially those major roadways. As soon as they go through, in just minutes the roads are blanketed once again. This gives you some perspective as to how much snow we have been getting. Take a look at the mound of snow at the Shopping Center here, this is the westview in frederick. Been parking lot, it has plowed a number of times. Minutes ago a truck came through here and once again, you have the area completely blanketed, over 2000 trucks are working around the clock youre in maryland. Over 100 trucks for Frederick County alone trying to stay up with this, but again, it is not just the snow, its the freezing rain and the sleet hitting me on the side of the face with howling wind really making it a challenge this morning here in frederick. That is the latest. Back to you inside. Winter whiplash across maryland, causing trouble even on the eastern shore. Tim barber is out there. Forget spring, it is the winter at the beach . Tim coming down rain here at the beach. Why did we drive all the way to the beach . Why am i standing in a parking lot . The sun has not come up, cant see the Atlantic Ocean right now, but the best visual for the wind and the rain is this parking lot. Some of these trees are blowing in the wind and the entire parking lot is soaking wet. It started raining at 11 00 last night when we were live at 11 00 and you could see, as we move away from the truck, how much wind we have. A rain cover just blew off the camera there, we will have to keep this problem pretty quick. You can see how much is on the boardwalk out here. It is pretty slick. Theres a little bit of sand here monitoring. A little bit of each erosion that we are worried about, a little bit of minor flooding that they are concerned could be happening with this rain here. And the wind, the wind is the big thing. We have got about 55 mileperhour wind gusts. Not right now but we can expect that later this morning and we will stay out here to monitor those conditions. Tim barber, good morning washington. Stay safe. Breaking this morning, a massive accident in chicago. 20 to 30 cars slamming into each other on the icy kennedy expressway. No word yet on how many are hurt. Autria more trouble up and down the east coast, these estates of all declared states of emergency, massachusetts set to declare any time this morning. And on the east coast is an absolute mess. Brianne carter is at the Reagan National airport, where thousands of flights have been canceled. Brianne we understand from officials that they are working to get some flights departing from here, but it is a slim number because really, the operations and a number of those northeast airports are not operating this morning. Take a look here, still very quiet in terms of the number of folks who have come out here to Reagan National, but over here you can see that this is where they check their bags and within the last 20 minutes or so we saw a couple who came around and were able to drop off their luggage, meaning that they have been given the goahead to go down to the terminal and get on the flight. That is the good news, but all across the country, up and down the east coast, we have thousands and thousands of flights. Were just checking in with these folks, these are operations for a number of Different Airlines in philadelphia. Autria having a little trouble with the audio there at the Reagan National airport, but pretty much if you have a flight that you were going to catch today, check with your airline, it has probably been delayed or canceled. Snow is piling up in the heart of the capital. Kennedy hasne continuing coverage. What are you seeing in that part of the district . Suzanne we wanted to show you what eileen has been talking about all morning. I texted her all morning and said what are we seeing . She texted me back that sleet has a beat. That is what she has been saying all morning. Take a listen to this. You can hear the sleet helping as it hits the front windshield of our car here. When you get out of the vehicle, getting out all i can see are pinpricks hitting my face. This is like the worst kind of winter precipitation. Its not that pretty, fluffy snow, its when its a little our neck or a little bit of rain, or right now freezing pelts. Its just terrible. A lot of people havent out this morning early, trying to get their day started. We caught up with some guys who were shoveling a few blocks from where we are right now. Weve got more on the hard work that they were doing as they tried to get the front brought front walkway cleared out at the henley market. Ofiness does go on for a lot people, even though it is a snow day for a lot of students and perhaps even some employees in the area, people are still dealing with things. We caught up with a man who was going in, an engineer at a retirement community, he had to be there this morning. He is one of those essential personnel. Hear how he described to Road Conditions that he experienced heading into work this morning. Snow trucks havent been there. But the main streets good. A little bit slushy. Some spots, slippery. You know, i have fourwheel drive, so, still, isis dangerous. You are looking here at the 4500 block of wisconsin avenue in northwest, we were coming down here at 3 00 this morning and we saw plenty of plow trucks out, they had been here all morning long, but what will get tricky is that the temperature drops all of this stuff on the road. Hard to say exactly what it is. Ice, snow, areas bottles, they will have to deal with that, motorists will have to deal with it as well. Kimberly is keeping an eye on things and fairfax, standing by live with the details on what is being dealt with there. Much of the same out here. These flags telling you part of the story, the wind, whipping down here in the parking lot. And a slushy mess that suzanne was just talking abt into the 29 diner they are doing salting the stairs. Its a bit slick outside, if you have to get out. These folks have an open all night long. We are going to take it easy up the stairs here. One more step there getting up to the diner, john is the owner and you have an open all night . John absolutely. Open all night. Coffee . For police, fire, rescue personnel who are out there, tow who arevers, folks helping you and me stay on the road. What do you make of the storm in general . It is treacherous. Stay with your home in your home, stay with your families, or come here and we will feed you write. We will find out more about that in the next few minutes. Back to you in the studio. Autria that is so nice of him. Larry free coffee, cool. Autria you needed out there this morning. Chronic a i dont think we will see anything tapering in any big way. Maybe just past noon in some areas. The best thing you can do is stay put this morning, my opinion. Its not until 11 a. M. When we see the temperatures rise. The big thing is the ice. I want to show you where the storm is right now, it is really starting to intensify. This area of low pressure is still tracking different types of precipitation. We are hearing a lot of the sleep, but i want to zoom in closer to the area. ,he highest snowfall totals which i will show you in a minute, are in frederick, Carroll County as well. Right here in the district we are really starting to see the sleep and where you see the purple right here, the national zoo a few moments ago reporting freezing rain and a lot of ice. Right now calvert, st. Marys counties, seeing some hefty ice accumulations. I worried about that with these gusting winds, we could have powerrees and limbs down, lines down, we will get the latest with julie in just a minute. Highest totals in frederick, maryland, almost eight inches in wind borough. Carroll county. These numbers are still coming in. We would love to hear your reports. Send them to us on our social media pages, thats probably the best way to get hold of us. Lets get to veronica for how much more we can see. A little more sleet, snow, and wind. This is live information from ashburn, virginia. Ocean city, just over 41 Miles Per Hour, that is where i think we will be seeing the highest wind gusts today. 55 Miles Per Hour or higher entire area we will average around 30 Miles Per Hour. With that we could see some scattered power outages. Wind picking up in areas of baltimore, annapolis, east of interstate 95 is the best chance for power outages. Chances for fog with reduced visibility because of the enhanced snow coming in with the system. Later today, temperatures only in the upper 30s. A lot of melting coming our way, we will talk about that in about 10 minutes. Julie on the roads right now we have some problems. We started off with several accidents but it is becoming an ice rink out there. Heavy wires, heavy powerlines, tree limbs, another tree is down here out of charles county. Heads up, 301 out of charles county, so far without incident. The bw parkway, another limb coming down as you approach 32. Be very careful of this. The green line is checking in with us towards greenbelt, train malfunction outside west hyattsville, costing you time with delays. We mentioned this earlier, look for the are underneath the train number, that is how you know that the train is operating on that schedule. Expect additional stops on those trains this morning. Allow for extra time of the roads and if you are a pedestrian walking over to these stops, make sure the you are wearing reflective clothing. Back in the next 10 minutes with another update on the roads and rails. Larry we are staying here with much more complete weather coverage. Autria see just three minutes away.
