We have a lot of news this morning and well start with the new information pouring in overnight on the suspect in that mass shooting at the airport in ft. Lauderdale, florida. His name is estefan santiago. This is the photo taken overnight as he was booked into the Broward County murder charges. Hes a 26yearold iraq war veteran with a reported history of Mental Illness and alleged Domestic Abuse and his family told the New York Times he had recently been hallucinating. Were hearing stories from people inside the terminal when santiago allegedly opened fire. The gunman being led away by police and theres the gun on the ground. Were going to talk to the passenger who took those shots coming up. Those long lines, passengers forced out of the airport and into a nearby cruise terminal waiting to board buses. Team coverage this saturday morning and begin with eva pilgrim in ft. Lauderdale for us. Hi, eva. Reporter good morning, paula. The airport here opening just hours ago. Although there are delays and cancellations this morning, investigators focusing on what drove this man to shoot all these people and why he came to florida. This morning the the alleged ft. Lauderdale shooter, estefan santiago. Handcuffed on his way into a south florida jail on murder charges with no bond. Shots fired. Reporter santiago allegedly opening fire in the baggage claim. Lower level inside. We have a subject with a gunshot to the head. Reporter sources telling abc news he arrived in ft. Lauderdale as a passenger on a delta flight traveling from anchorage, alaska, through minneapolis to ft. Lauderdale. According to investigators legally checking his unloaded gun and separate ammunition into his one ly bag. After getting off the plane a Broward County commissioner telling us the former soldier went into a bathroom where allegedly he loaded his weapon and came out shooting. Casings were flying all around us. Reporter santiago allegedly firing indiscriminate without my laptop and the case and the plastic case the bullet would have gone through my shoulder bags. Cowardly heinous act resulted in the deaths of five people. Reporter the airport on lockdown. Thousands evacuated from the terminal. Their arms raised as police led them to secure zones. Im looking at a man and a woman and a man bleeding profusely. Reporter one witness telling abc news the alleged shooter d ending his rampage by laying on the ground and calmly waiting for his arrest. This image reportedly of the gun left behind. A side door opened about 20 feet away with two security guards holding a man handcuffed. Reporter but for approximately 10,000 passengers the ordeal was not over. It took almost 12 hours to fully screen the thwrongs of potential witnesses finally released in a massive crowd and slowly shuttled to terminal. No direction. Mass herding of people and confusion. Reporter we are told some people even waking up this morning at that cruise ship terminal. Santiago is expected to make his first appearance in court on monday. Paula. Eva, thank you for your reporting. We want to bring in an eyewitness to the shooting, mark lea who was right next to the shooter when he opened fire. Mark, first and foremost, thanks so much for joining us. Youre pretty traumatized. How are you . Im a little tired. Has not fully set in. Kind of surreal. What did you see . We were just kind of almost getting ready to leave one of the doors and heard three quick raps i turned towards where the noise was coming from. A pause after the three rounds which then people also were realizing that was gunfire. A lot of screaming, a lot of kind of yelling and people franticalltr exits to try to get out, take cover. How long did the shooting last . I would say about 45 seconds total. What was the gunman demeanor during the attack. He did not say a single thing. He was just emotionless like a blank sheet of paper. What were you doing during the attack. I got my wife out of the building, from there after she got out of the building, there was a number of older ladies that had fallen in the exitway so went back in to help them get out. The shooter is walking in the same direction as me. Both you and the shooter were walking towards one another. Was there a moment you thought i might not make it out alive. The thought ran through me. I did not want to become a casualty. Are you surprised he stopped when he did . E ran out of ammunition. Thats why he stopped shooting. What im hearing from you is an extraordinary account of bravery and courage. Did adrenaline kick in. People ask what i was thinking to walk back into an active shooting towards the shooter. He had a chance to leave but he decided to go back and help people. But he was also on the flight. You know, we know that santiago flew to minneapolis and he was on that same flight and said no disturbances from any other passengers. Incredible what he did. Speaking of santiago, investigators are digging deeply into his background. His name, Esteban Santiago. Good morning, dan and paula. Santiago remains a mystery but what is emerging is a profile of a bad soldier with mental problems who was out on bail facing charges of beating up his girlfriend and claimed there were voices in his head forcing him to join isis. Its still f led this 26yearold veteran to go on his murderous rampage but some of his social media accounts are raising concerns. His instagram profile page has photos of him in uniform as a member of the Army National guard in puerto rico and then alaska. He was deployed to iraq for a year and was discharged four months ago for unsatisfactory performance. Santiagos profile Statement Reads heres to finding whether or not your mission on earth is finished. If your still alive, it isnt. Federal authorities tell abc news that santiago recently received Mental Health treatment after he showed up at the anchorage, alaska, fbi office claiming the government was forcing him to watch isis videos. Agents described him as incoherent. His erratic behavior concerned fbi agents that were interviewing him. He was taken into custody by the local police and transported to a medical facility for a health evaluation. Reporter shortly after the attack fbi agents and Police Quickly showed up at one of santiagos last known addresses at this trailer park in anchorage and outside the home of his relatives in union city, new jersey, trying to decipher his troubled life and what brought him to the airport in ft. Lauderdale with a gun. Authorities tell abc news the fbi agents in alaska actually opened up what is known as a guardian case on santiago which is done when there is a suspicion of possible terrorism. But because he was not deemed a threat only to himself but to others agents did not put him on a nofly list or have him designated as raising a flag if he booked a plight. They will be looking back at those decisions now, i suspect. They will. Shootings raising questions about security at our nations airports and whether attacks like this can be prevented. This happened at the end of the line most of the security focused right at the beginning. So we want to bring in international in d. C. Great to have you this morning, david. You know, this is what is deemed a soft target. And attacks like this when the one in brussels and istanbul last year always lead to debates on where to place security checkpoints. Is that the answer we should be exploring. Reporter some believe it may be time to move the security from tsa where we have it now in front of the gates and move it out to the front door. Im in the ticketing area and walked through without any problem and stood in front of this camera to talk to you today but moving security to the front door for ticketing and baggage is very lossly and make it more of a hassle. There are concerns and its a big debate. It will be happening nonetheless. We saw passengers running onto the tarmac which is a really secure area. Weve seen it happen before. So, is this now just Standard Operating Procedure, getting out of the building as quickly as possible in a crisis . Reporter i dont think its Standard Operating Procedure at all. Police werent sure what they had. Did they have just one the shooter in the baggage claim area or was there more . They wanted to lock everything down . Thats why they put people out on the tarmac to get them out of the way. Some people think and there will be Lessons Learned from what happened in ft. The goal, to help president elect trumps selection chances when possible by discrediting secretary mcclinton and publicly contrasting her unfavorably to him. Trump did china and others are consistently trying to hack a variety of american institutions, but rejected any assertion this might have influenced the election results. Well, this morning trump tweeted there was absolutely no evidence that the hacking affected the election results. Hes now calling for a congressional investigation not into the russian hacking but rather into how reporters obtained a leaked copy of the declassified report even before trump himself had had the briefing. In chicago, a judge has denied bail for four young africanamerican suspects accused of abusing a mentally disabled white man. The disturbing incident streamed live on facebook sparking outrage. The four suspects face kidnapping and hate crime charges. In court the judge said to them where was the sense of decency each of you should have had. Multiple deaths in americas first mass murder of 2017. Overnight Florida Police taking 26yearold Esteban Santiago into custody charging him with murder. Now, he is at the ban served in iraq and has a reported history of mental problems recently interviewed by the fbi. They say he told them isis had gained control of his mind urging him to fight for them. Investigators say he boarded a delta flight in alaska, checking a handgun in his luggage after landing in ft. Lauderdale, they believe he took that gun out of his bag, went into the bathroom and loaded it before he opened fire randomly shooting at terrified passenger. This morning flights have resumed at ft. Lauderdales airport with terminal 2 closed off. Moments ago we spoke with one of the survivors who narrowly escaped a bullet saved by his laptop. I was wearing my backpack on both shoulders and then i was crouched up against the conveyer belt and felt a thud and a piece of luggage did fall on me. Later i found out that there was a bullet that ricocheted and entered my backpack, blew up my laptop and the bullet was still in my backpack when the fbi searched it later. I saw a man get shot in the head. I saw there were people with blood on them. I was i was fortunate to be in a different a different part of the area. Without the backpack and without the backpack without my laptop and the case and the plastic case the bullet would have gone through my shoulder blades. So lucky to have that and a couple of minutes well explore why santiago who did have was able to have a gun in the first place. First, though, moments ago i spoke with mike and alina starobinsky. They were inside that airport with their children when shots were fired. Alina, as you were looking down at this victim and the woman who was trying to help, what were you seeing play out there . It looked like it was bleeding severely and they said they were trying to hide, i guess and behind the corner and shes just sat down and she just started screaming help, help, and we were on top on the balcony and we couldnt help with anything. Mike, to be there with your children in such an insecure and tense situation, what was that like . You know what, as soon as somebody shouted shots fired i grabbed them of the it was just one of those flight situation. I just took them and alina was outside. My fatherinlaw was outside. I did not see a shooter because we were on the main level. All this took place on a lower level. So i just ran. So you were actually, alina, shouting medical direction to the man aiding this man who had been shot. Yes, yes, i just wanted i told her to raise his arm and people around me started telling her, you know, raise his arm, raise his arm. You know, i just and it seemed like he didnt bleed as much. I couldnt really see but he was like really thats why he was sitting there with his arm up. Mike and alina, what a horrifying ordeal. Im sorry you had to go through this. This shooting questions about Airport Security so lets bring in abc news aviation consultant Steve Ganyard in washington. Also with us in studio the former Dallas Police chief at abc news contributor chief david brown. Good morning to you, sir. Good morning, dan. Let me get it out to steve. As you know this happened in the baggage claim area not in the secure part of the airport. So do you think airports are going to think about expanding the secure zones and how far do you go with that . Its a debate thats going to have to be undertaken, dan, weve done a really good job post9 11 in preventing complex attacks of doing things like breaking up cells and keeping people off airplanes but public spaces are always going to be vulnerable. If you look at the past few months the number of attacks of individuals in public spaces show us just like yesterday did that people are always going to be vulnerable where youre allowed to gather. Chief brown, this question is for you. We know esteban legally checked his gun back in agoing a you look at his past. Health issues. His family said he had been hallucinating undergoing psychological treatment. He told the fbi that he had voices in his head from isis saying that he should join isis. So how does a person like this with that kind of history even have a gun to begin with. That is the tough question that we have to find answers to in order to prevent this. Whether a background check was done on him . Did that information regarding his Mental Illness get shared into the federal database and did we check that database when he checked that bag with a gun in it is the big question thats unanswered and then from there, how did he possess or purchase a gun in the first place if he had that incident and whether theres any adjudication of that treatment that he received, so many Unanswered Questions but we have to find the and the to those questions so that we can prevent these type of incidents happening Going Forward. Our final seconds here, what to you from the alleged shooters background sticks out . Well, he deployment with the army guard. He did have service. He was kicked out essentially out of the guard for poor performance so he was not a model soldier. But he had been away from the military for almost three years. How did he get to alaska . Why was he there and what happened in that interim since his military service will be important to investigators. Chief brown, one quick question for you who is taking the lead in this investigation right now. Often one party or the other will take the lead whether its the federal authorities if theres some indication of terrorism or if its a murder investigation, the homicide detectives of that county of that city. Right now were hearing that its a collaboration that theyre not sure which direction this might go in since there was some indication that the person was delusional but referenced isis. And so theres a collaboration Going Forward because you do have five people who were killed so theres clearly a Homicide Investigation being conducted by the Sheriffs Department there but i think the fbi staying plugged in to see if there is a true is its delusional they want to be up to speed quicker.
