I was backstage when that moment happened which is normally very champagne flowing, but when that moment happened there was an audible collective gasbackstage and then stunned silence. Thank you to my parents. Reporter but, wait, chaos erupting. Oscar producers and Host Jimmy Kimmel swarm the stage because im sorry, no, theres a mistake. Moonlight, you guys won best picture. Moonlight won. This is not a joke. This is not a joke. Im afraid they read the wrong thing. This is not a joke. Moonlight has won best picture. Reporter moonlight is the real winner. The films team in tears total shock at the dolby theatre. Very clearly even in my dreams this could not be true but to hell with dreams. Im done with it because its true. Oh, my goodness. Reporter emma stone brought home the oscar for best actress for la la land but backstage she was still in shock about the best picture mixup. I mean, im so beyond excited for moonlight. I think moonlight is one of the greatest films of all time, so as far as im concerned i think this is like the cruelest outcome ever, but the process of getting there was a trip. Yeah, i mean youve got, you know, your guys giving acceptance speeches. I know and theyre so incredible and its its one of those things that like the idea of an art competition in general seems very wild but thats i mean, the producers of la la land are unbelievable and i mean, hey, its craziest moment ever. Reporter Mahershala Ali who won best supporting actor for moonlight gave credit to the la la land cast. When you heard them moonlight i just didnt i didnt even know what to do. I think i needed to hear them say it multiple times and really pull us up but jordan who was speaking and accepting on behalf of la la land is such a great guy, such a generous guy that, of course, he was the one who said, oh, we didnt win . Bring them up here and i just absolutely love all of those folks up there. I mean, thats a moment thats going to go down in history. Yeah. Reporter kimmel told us after the show beatty had the wrong envelope. In reality he was perplexed by why her name was on there. Why not just ask for help . The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered was immediately corrected. What people may not realize is there are actually two copies of each winner envelope so emma stone said she had hers with her name on it but it turns out there was another envelope backstage and that one must have been what ended up in Warren Beattys hands, guys. Because, youre right, they have on each end of the stage because they dont know which way the presenters will come out. I guess we dont know who gave it to them. You got to feel bad for him. Though. What i feel bad about were not talking about moonlight. It is so deserving of what it won and best picture and our super fan, you agree too with that, right . I saw it coming. They did it. I agree. I felt so bad for the la la land embarrassment but at the same time moonlight is not getting the attention that they deserve as the first lgbt movie to win on oscar award im sorry. Thats true and, guys, once we move past discussing the best picture disaster and did take a while for all of the winners to process we were able to move on to those other subjects from moving acceptance speeches to how they plan to celebrate. People ask me all the time, what kind of stories do you want to tell, viola . Your acceptance speech was one of the most remarkable speeches ive ever heard. I always feel like i have a lot to say. At 51 years old ive had a lifetime of experience, man, ive been doing there for over 30 years professionally. You always have something to say and never at a loss for words. You have just broken all of these boundaries. The first black actor to win any oscar and tony, first black woman to award nominations. Tell me how that feels. It feels good. I mean, it feels like my hard work has paid off but at the same time, i still have the impostor syndrome. I still feel like im going to wake up and everybody is going to see me for the hack i am. I still feel like when i walk on the set im starting from scratch until i do realize i know what im doing. Im human. I know im not the best but im proud of myself. This is the first year ive allowed myself just a little bit to see that to realize that self deprecation is not the answer to humility. That sometimes you can say, i deserve it, that im proud of myself and move on. Congratulations. Thank you. On the supporting actor role and i have to say this is a remarkable week for you. Yes. The birth of your daughter. Yes, yes. And now your oscar. Yeah. I dont think this could compare to most. Probably i imagine i will look at this week as one of the more extraordinary moments in my life for sure. Okay, so what are you doing to celebrate now . I mean everyone is a little shellshocked. Ill go to a couple of pears and hang with my folk, the moonlight folks but want to get home and be with my wife and my daughter so im not going to be out too long and shes going to keep me up anyway tonight because shes like 4 days old and shes got a lot to say and talk about and tell me. Its going to take a long time to unpack all of this mentally. I have to tell you your acceptance speech was so beautiful. Did you practice it . I mean, i thought a little about people that id like to say thank you to because ive watched the oscars for a long time and seen those t you forget people that are incredibly important to you. And your brother turned out to be a good luck charm. Hes the greatest person i know. I love him probably more than any person on the planet so what are you doing to celebrate. Calling for a special prosecutor to investigate any ties between his campaign and russia, jon karl has more. Others had harsh words. Some credit jimmy kimmel for setting the tone and disarming the tension with some of those very funny joke, george. They were funny, okay, tom, thanks very much. Lets talk about it with matthew dowd and, jimmy kimmel really did set the tone last night. Some fairly sharp barbs but also a little restraint and even compassion at times. Yeah, i thought actually it was more oh, i thought it was more funny than biting and thought there was a great moment when speech about the supporting actress when he said lets oppose without hatred. That sort of framed the night. It was opposition to donald trump but it wasnt bitter and hateful. And so far at least the president has shown some restraint this morning, as well. We havent gotten a tweet yet. Well, i actually think hes probably celebrates the gulf that exists between hollywood and Middle America and his supporters so i think hes probably going to wake up or has woken up and not so it doesnt feel so bad about what happened. The other thing is i believe in this rule of threes, george and the rule is threes is when bizarre things happen or shocking things happen in three, we had election night, we had the super bowl and now we had what happened at the end of the oscars with moonlight and la la land. You think were done with that now . I think its actually the moonlight la la land to me was such a great moment in this because the producers of la la land were so gracious in what they did and then Price Waterhouse cooper unlike many leadership especially in washington embraced the moment and took accountability for it so i thought it was actually a good lesson when mistakes are made. And saw jimmy kimmel at the beginning make that plea really for everybody to reach out to someone who disagrees with you, just have a civil conversation. I thought Jimmy Kimmels statement in that moment was perfect in this and i think all of us can do a much better job on either side of the aisle to figure out ways that bind us together and common nalls that exist and again we can oppose somebody but it doesnt have to be hateful and bitter. That must have been such a stupefying moment for you. Thank you, yeah, it was it was a surreal moment for sure. But, you know, i wanted to make sure that the right thing was done because, you know, at that point it was not about me, it was about making sure that moonlight got the recognition that it really guys are my friends and i wanted to make sure they had their moment. When did you realize what was happening . There was a lot of confusion on stage and at a certain point, it was clear that the wrong envelope had gun given and its been a showed us the best picture envelope and it said moonlight and thats when i sort of jumped to the mike and made sure everyone knew what was going on and showed the card. People needed clarity at that moment. I think you said something on everybodys mind. People thought this has to be a joke. Yeah, no, i mean it it there was a lot of confusion and chaos and it didnt look like there was any order whatsoever so just kind of jumped in and showed them the card because when everybody saw the writing i think it was really clear this was something that was happening. It was clear as you look back on it all, it was clear that Warren Beatty was looking for help, as well. Yeah, i mean, listen, he was like this slow, steady realization that something wasnt right. And it needed to be corrected so jumped in and did it. Did you get a chance to speak afterwards. Talked about your friends on moonlight. Did you get a chance to talk to barry jenkins. No, i saw i went over to the governors ball and saw barry and mahershala, i saw jeremy and a bunch of those people and spending a lot of time together. La la land premiered in venice and telluride and with moonlight for the past five, six months weve really been on the road together doing this whole journey and theyve become really Close Friends of mine. And, you know, we kind of shared a moment, shared hugs and congratulated each other on our work and, you know, but put it all behind us and sort of moved forward and do more work together. La la land, tremendous picture and won a lot of picture and the way you handled last night sent a lesson to everyone watching. Congratulations on that. Have a great day today, jordan . I mean, i have no words to fully describe it which is why speechless was exactly the right caption for me. I just felt so much love and support and i will remember this for the rest of my life. Really remember it, as well. There was also a memorable moment, kind of a flag kind of got in the way there, a little hiccup. Tell us what happened there and how you kept going. Yes, that is im glad someone noticed it, yeah, i did get a little bump on the head. It was kind of like a hey, youre at the oscars. It was a good reminder. Things happen and you just got to kind of roll with it. You are a pro. Because you never would have known it happened because you just kept on going. You didnt miss a beat.
