Crucial New York Primary just four days away. Polls show a healthy lead in new york for hillary. Nationally though a dead heat. Because a new National Poll shows her just two of Bernie Sanders after holding a 13point lead last month. Abcs cecilia vega is here with more on that and the highlights from last nights debate. They have known each other for decades but if what happened on that stage last night is any indication, Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton are no longer friends. There was bickering, shouting, dirty looks, the mean streets of new york came to life on that stage. In this subway series a battle royale. On their home turf. I love being in brooklyn. This is great. A statement excuse me. Reporter a brooklyn brawl. Interesting comment but you didnt answer the question. I did. No, you didnt. I think i have the microphone reporter from the staredown to the flying hands to the yelling. I am sure a lot of people are very surprised to learn that you supported raising the minimum wage to 15 bucks an hour. A minute, wait, wait, come on. I have stood on the debris stage with senator sanders eight prior times. I have said the exact same thing. Senator, please. Reporter the showdown starting just about as soon as they faced off. Does secretary clinton have the experience and the intelligence to be a president , of course, she does, but i do question [ cheers ] but i do question her judgment. Senator sanders did call me unqualified. Ive been called a lot of things in my life. That was a first. The people of new york voted for me twice to be their senator from new york. [ cheers and applause ] and president obama trusted my judgment enough to ask me to be secretary of state. Reporter clinton also hammering down on sanders plan to break up the big banks, questioning whether he has details. He could not explain how that would be done. He could not answer about afghanistan, about israel, about counterterrorism. I think you need to have the judgment on day one to be both president and commander in chief. Reporter and she was put on the hot seat herself refusing to commit to releasing those transcripts of her paid speeches to wall street firms. It is your democratic opponent and many democratic voters who want to see those transcripts. Its not about the republicans. Everybody does it, okay, i will do it but lets set and expect the same standard on tax returns. Reporter this was definitely a debate unlike any other. Sanders needs a landslide victory here in new york to help his chances of winning the nomination and hes now taking some heat for heading to the vatican for a conference right after that debate ended. He landed there this morning. Hillary clinton is leaving town too, robin. She is heading to california for a big weekend of fundraisers with the clooneys. Not a day off for any of the candidates, it seems. Or us. Thats true. Or our political team. Jon karl and matthew dowd here lot of shouting. The candidates seem to be getting pretty tired of each other. The big question, did anything change after last night. What i recall is the last time there was that much shouting in brooklyn, Ralph Kramden and alice were involved in the honeymooner. I was wondering which tv show you would go to. I think that debate highlighted Bernie Sanders authenticity and it highlighted Hillary Clintons competency and experience in the course of this. I dont know how much the debate will move that but i think the race is closing and i think sanders has an outside chance of winning the New York Primary. It is a must win for Bernie Sanders. Reporter it absolutely as cecilia said he not only needs to win in new york, he needs to win in a landslide to catch up in the delegates but, look, Bernie Sanders last night looked and sounded like a candidate who really believes he can win this thing. Going after Hillary Clinton in a way that was much more personal, almost contemptuous of her. The bottom l clinton is she took some serious shots from Bernie Sanders and had to go back at him in a way thats going to make it harder for her to eventually get those sanders supporters if and when she gets the nomination. The question i want to bring to matthew dowd. Weve seen that on the republican side. Real acrimony. Really saw it bubble up. How hard will it be for the democrats to come back together . There is a huge emotional rift but theres also a huge demographic rift with older voters being on one side, Younger Voters being on the other. I think the best healing balm for a party thats in a rift is the common enemy and i think thats their hope whether its donald trump or ted cruz, that that common enemy will unite the party. You heard donald trump complaining about the rigged rules on the republican side. He also has an oped in this mornings wall street journal. Heres what he says. What we are seeing now is not a proper use of the rues but a flag grant abuse of the rules. Delegates are supposed to reflect the decisions of voters but the system is being rigged by Party Operatives with double agent delegates who reject the decision of voters. Your response . Well, look, the rules were put out there over a year ago. Its understand them, so in a vote system, depending on the outcome of the vote candidates receive delegates. Those candidates must vote for that candidate, for that winner, so theyre actually bound to vote for the winner, nothing is being taken away. And then when those elections happen for who those delegates are in those states, thats the process of the campaigns intimately involved with and who wins those elections and who doesnt is up to the campaigns to make sure that those people win and thats what hes complaining about. Mr. Trump also writing that he wants to reform the system, wants to work with you to reform the system. Do you think the system needs reform and have you spoken with mr. Trump about it . Well, i mean the system has been around for a long time. It was good enough for Abraham Lincoln. I think its good enough for whoever our nominee is going to be. So, look, this is democracy in action. Both Political Parties use a similar system. The other piece of this is that this is a convention and i think that were losing sight of what the word convention actually means. It is a coming together of our Party Members to write rules of our party, to elect officers, thats what conventions are. You say its a coming together. It sounds like its going to be a breaking apart. No, you know what i mean. Its the coming together of delegates to write the rules and elect officers. And thats what were doing. But meantime, the democrats are making hay of this. The chair Debbie Wasserman shults saying they are in a civil war food fight. At the end of their convention the Republican Party will not be the Republican Party of today and will likely blow themselves to smithereens. Arent you worried about a convention where no no one ishappy. Debbie doesnt have any room to talk. Theyre gouging each others ey fbi is reviewing a possible indictment of Hillary Clinton. So, i mean, i dont think shes got anywhere to talk but, no, it isnt easy. Reporter the plane forced to make an Emergency Landing after a bird struck the aircraft cracking the windshield. Reporter bird strikes on aircraft are a growing problem as bird populations soar. Earlier this week while landing at Heathrow Airport with 71 passengers, this egypt air boeing 737 damaged its nose when a flock flew into it. There was a huge bang, a boom sound on the left side. Reporter and a bird caused an engine fire on this jetblue flight from san juan to jfk. The takeoff suddenly aborted. Flight 704 left engine. Leslie van houten was the youngest of the manson followers convicted in the 1969 killings and now a california review board is recommending her for parole. Abcs matt gutman is in los angeles with more. Good morning, matt. Reporter good morning, robin. Leslie van houten was a 19yearold homecoming queen when she met Charles Manson. Shes been behind bars for the last 4 1 2 decades after admitting her role in the killing of a couple here in los angeles, but this morning, shes one major step closer to freedom. Overnight Charles Manson follower Leslie Van Houten recommended for parole. For years van houten was locked behind bars for her participation in the murders of leno and Rosemary Labianca and her attorney arguing that shes been a model prisoner and poses no threat to the public. They called her inmate and earned her masters degree in the last two years. Shes now 66 years old but in the 1960s just a teenager. A homecoming queen who sang at her church choir before she linked up with manson. And when you first saw him . I felt that i had met someone that by being around him would have a positive change. Reporter decades after the murder in 1994 van houten spoke with Abcs Diane Sawyer about the night that she and several other manson followers savagely attacked and murdered the labiancas in their California Home in 1969. And then tex turned me around and handed me the knife and he said, do something and i stabbed mrs. Labianca in the lower back about 16 times. What kind of punishment do you deserve . What is enough . I dont know when enough pu me. Reporter that sentiment shared by many including the l. A. District attorney and the couples daughter, telling abc news overnight we do not think anybody who commits the kind of crimes that she and the others did should ever be paroled. Van houtens parole has been denied 19 times over the past 45 years but on thursday, she said, i dont let myself off the hook. I dont find parts of any of in that make me feel the slightest bit good about myself. The parole board said van houten hasnt had a serious rule violation in 46 years. The same cant be said of manson who is now 81 years old. He and others involved in the killings are still behind bars. But van houtens release isnt a done deal. She still has to go before the governor and another parole board who could decide to keep her in prison. Robin. All right, matt. Thank you. Well talk to abcs chief legal analyst dan abrams about that very thing that matt was allowing to because bruce davis who was an associate with ma was recommended for parole Governor Brown rejected that. What are the chances hell do that here . Close, close case here. Shes got a better argument than even bruce davis meaning she was younger, has done more in prison. Taken more responsibility for what she did. So if you think that people should ever be paroled for murder and parole was part of her sentence, the possibility for parole then shes done everything right. Shes got a masters degree. She hasnt had problems and helped other prisoners, everything on the list to parole someone Leslie Van Houten can check off and, yet, as a political matter, how could it help the governor to release a manson follower . So its a very tough situation here and i think in the end a close call for him. 19 times we heard in that report shes been denied and get it this time. Whats the next step here. The next step first of all there is a legal review board thats first going to have to go through it. Which we expect they would it ends up on the governors desk. One of the things the governor could do is not review it at all and just say im not going to take any action, as a result that means she does get parole. We have to remember the victims families. You know what, give the chimpanzee for his effort, made it off zoo grounds and to a neighborhood and put on this highwire act before eventually came crashing back to earth and hard. An unbelievable and at times terrifying twohour pursuit that ended with this edge of your seat highwire standoff between japanese authorities and chacha, a 24yearold male chimpanzee that escaped in sendai and up an electric pole and played out live on japanese television. At times chacha treated the power lines like tree branches. And screamed at workers trying to capture him. Now, watch what happens when a worker shoots him with a tranquilizer dart. Chacha goes after the guy. [ speaking a Foreign Language ] and almost falls in the process. Even pulls the dart out of his own back. The animal now is all riled up and thank goodness that animal did not jump in that bucket because at times they say the power of six full grown men. Reporter even sedated chacha does a pretty good tightrope routine determined to get away but the tranquilizer kicks in. Chacha tries but struggles to hold on and finally he takes a dramatic plunge, workers were ready for him below and him away. A new study links some to serious kidney damage when taken long term. Dr. Jennifer ashton joins us from l. A. With more on this. Good to see you, jen and people want to know about this but what kind of heartburn medications are we talking about and what type of damage can they do . Well, robin, this is really a story and a study about striking that fine balance between risks and benefits. Now, there are two classes of heartburn medication, one is called h2 blockers, the other is called ppi or proton pump inhibitors. Thats what this study the latest of which was really about. It found that people taking ppis, poe ton pump inhibitors for a long period of time, it was associated with an increase risk of chronic in some cases even kidney failure. So this doesnt mean those medications cant be safe and effective, it just means awareness because over 15 million americans are on those medications and they are available over the counter as well as by prescription. And, jen, as you know, these medications have been out there for a very long time. So why are we just hearing about this now and could it potentially cause other damage . Well, you know, robin, i really think this is a blessing in disguise because in medicine and science, we should always be reassessing data. They have been out for a long time and in general this class of medication is considered safe and effective. But that doesnt mean we dont always reask questions, look at data and reevaluate things. Thats what medicine and science is about. Now, when you talk about risks of this class of medication, there have been associated findings that show theyre associated with vitamin deficiencies, a b12 deficiency, in some cases m deficiency, anemia, heart issues, bone fractures or osteoporosis but there are benefits and they are safe and effective but talking about heartbun or g. I. Reflux, its very uncomfortable. Ive had it myself and if untreated, that acid can actually cause some serious damage to the lower esophagus causing a precancerous or even cancerous condition of the esophagus so its about finding that balance. As always, so, jen, lets say youre hearing this and youre like, you know what, im going to stop taking these medications, what are some things you can do when it comes to heartburn . Allie in the middle is tall and gorgeous, so she can wear a higher waisted thee can wear anything, lets be honest. Totally true but taller women have a hard time finding things that fit and it has a little bit more of a flair and shows off her long, long legs and sage is a little on the curvier side and for curvier women you dont want something that clings too much in the legs so these have a little more room in the thighs and nipped at the ankle so still shows off her beautiful shape.
