Shes her her side of the story. And good morning, america. Right to the breaking news. The First American air strikes in syria. New front in a long war. Missiles fired from warships dropped by air. Most are in the isis stronghold of raqqah. But also a new terror group inside syria called corasan. How that active plot targeting america was stopped. Surprising developments. Our abc news Security Team up all night tracking this story. Start with Martha Raddatz whos in washington. Reporter good morning. This is a major escalation in the fight. It may not have been shock and awe, but the wave of air strikes in syria was the biggest we have seen in a single day since the u. S. Began attacking isis in august. We did not do it alone and not just attacking isis. The strikes were launched from the air and the sea. Missiles and precisionguided bombs from u. S. Stealth bombers, stealth fighters and armed drones pummelling 22 targets in syria with 47 tomahawk missiles fired from Navy Warships in the persian gulf and red sea. Very different than iraq. This is almost like a desert storm. Lots of fire power, everything the United States has, all our best gear into this fight. Its a highthreat environment. Reporter 14 of the targets were aimed at isis headquarters, supply depots, command and control centers and financial centers. Stretching from raqqah where the americans and british hostage were executed, and across to the east of the iraq border. But eight additional al qaeda targets were hit to disrupt what the u. S. Called an imminent trk against the u. S. By the corasan group. From jordan, saudi arabia, bahrain, qatar and the united arab emt rates helped with the attack against isis. This is the most participation from sunni arab nations dropping bombs on other sunnis. Its quite remarkable. Reporter the u. S. Has been flying surveillance missions, picking out the targets for the mission. It was not a mission without risk. Syria has sophisticated antiaircraft systems. But it is unlikely the assad regime would want to fire on the u. S. Or arab countries since he wants to get rid of isis. They were notified of the attacks, to decon conflict the aircraft not to strike. And more from jon karl. We know the president met last week with the generals. When did he give the final green light to strike. White house officials arent saying when it precisely was. But he made the decision to do this way back on september 10th when he addressed the nation. And when he visited with his generals down in tampa, he went through the specifics and the details of the plan carried out last night. And the president was kept informed of the progress of the air strikes. When he precisely gave that green light, white house officials arent saying. We heard there was no coordination with the government of syria. But there may have been some notification of the syrian government. Reporter theyre being squishy about when and how it was transpired. The syrians claimed that secretary of state john kerry sent a letter. White house officials deny that, saying nothing from the secretary of state. But they did notify them through a third party. And the important detail here is they did not coordinate with the syrians. It was simply a notification that the air strikes were about to start. Thank you. And joined now by the pentagon spokesman, admiral john kirby. Thank you. Was this mission a success . Yes, we believe it was, george. Were still assessing the effectiveness of the strikes that took place over several hours last night, as you know. But all indications were that we were successful at hitting what we were aiming at. What did you take out . Command and control facilities, supply depots, training areas, vehicles and trucks. That kind of thing. Mainly we were going after this groups ability to sustain itself, to resource itself, and to frankly command and control and lead their forces. Were there americans on the ground in syria assisting with these strikes . There was no americans on the ground in syria during these strikes. We have several weeks in iraq, but isis is Holding Strong there. How long will they continue . Theyre going to continue for quite some time. Its hard to put an end date on it. But the guidance from the a commander in chief ask clear, take the fight to them. You will continue to see as yesterday, more air strikes inside iraq in support of iraqi air forces. And separate strikes against another al qaeda affiliate. What can you tell us about that . Its an offshoot of al nusra, an al qaeda affiliate. We had indications that this group, a very dangerous group, was plotting and planning imminent attacks to include the u. S. Homeland. It was on that basis that we struck those targets inside syria. Let me press on that. You knew of a possible attack against the United States homeland. We knew there was active plotting going on for an attack on the u. S. Homeland. Not much more detail, but we are aware of that. You believe that the threat was eliminated . We believe that the individuals that were plotting and planning have been eliminated. Reporter corasan is a Shadowy Group of 50 fighters who they believe is far more dangerous than isis. Officials believe they are using a facility in syria near aleppo to attack american aviation using undetectable explosives. They carried them out against training camps, explosives, am mi you in additions and command and control. They had migrated there under muhsin alfadhli. You said undetectable explosives, what more can you tell us . Reporter they were in the final stages of putting them in toothpaste tubes or clothing dipped in liquid explosives that could not be detected. They tried to keep their existence and hideout secret. And we had been discouraged from reporting on them for fear of showing them how much we knew. But they knew about them. Absolutely, inside the operation. And amy with the other stories. We begin with more breaking news from the middle east. Word that israel shot down a syria fighter jet which it claims was in israeli air space. The pilots pair a chuting back into syrian territory where the civil war has been raging for months. And a dire new warning about the historic ebola outbreak. Global Health Experts are predicting the number could quadruple in the next six weeks in africa to 21,000. They warn the virus could become, quote, a permanent fixture in the region. Back here, a massive fire in the port of los angeles. Forcing 850 workers to flee. Crews battling the flames from the air, land and water. No one was injured. Heavy winds expected to fan the flames of the socalled king wildfire in Northern California today. That fire has burned 137 square miles. Thats the size of atlanta. Threatening 12,000 homes. This morning the secret service under fire as new details reveal the intruder who got inside the white house may have been far more dangerous than first thought. He had 800 rounds of ammunition, two hatchets and a machete in the car near the white house. We found out the person had these weapons. This was so close to being a disaster. And the health scare in texas. Families on edge after learning that over 700 newborns were exposed to tuberculosis at an el Paso Hospital last year. David wright has the story. The website jezebel reporting and another sister were forced to leave the sorority in april, 2013, that under kir as supervision pledges were called names and made to perform physical tasks to the point of bruising and exhaustion. In your experience, what happened at Hofstra University . These allegations are not true. Im incredibly hurt that someone has said these things. Under the broad definition of hazing, yes, i was involved with some of those activities while i was at hofstra. I came in as an impressionable freshman. And i was hazed. And that was the culture and brought up through the organization thinking that was appropriate. Im two years removed, i understand thats not true. What did it include . It included Something Like you would stand in a line and recite information. Or a few sleepless nights crafting. Things that that were like menial tasks. And you were told that if you could learn the information and participate in the traditional things you would be a member of the sorority. Why did your sorority, alpha phi have you leave in april of 2013 after an investigation . I was asked by a new member educator when i was a senior to reach out to the alumni base to have an event of sorts. And in the email i made a joke that was taken out of context and forwarded to the national office. What was the joke that you made in that email . That we would make the evening scary for the pledges. When that event never came to fruition. None of those things that i have been accused of never happened or were intended to happen. So of the accusations, which are the most inflammatory . Which ones 100 do you know that never happened . I can sit here and be honest. Yes, i was involved under the broad definition of hazing at some point. But never, ever in a million years what this is claiming to hold. Will you make hazing part of your platform now . Will you include that in your antifemale Violence Campaign . Well, i think now that, obviously, this is all this is all out in the open and i think its very important for me to address it. Im going to take this negative and turn it into a positive. One last question. I know my 9yearold watched with wide eyes, what would you say to young girls who look up to you as miss america . And then my little girl came room and i was really corn concerned. Cookie rules the roost. Ellen said they dont give along. It would be hard if i had to give away my daughter.
