Projections and that a series of designs will be finalized by the end of the year. Hawaii, annual exercises kicked off june 30. I spoke with our correspondent about what to expect. Limited pacific exercise is the Worlds Largest naval exercise. It takes place every two years. 50 ships, there are and 45 summary and staking part. There are 27 nations, 25,000 people have gathered. Most of it is in and around hawaii. The ships gather in poll harbor pearl harbor. We spend the last weekend having parties, playing soccer, playing volleyball, getting to know each other, a lot of socializing. And then july they go out and do several weeks of exercises. The pacific is a world of bilateral relationships. There is no nato in the pacific. There is no Central Organization were everybody goes and sees everybody oneonone. Wheres an opportunity more nations take part than any other exercise. It is a major opportunity for people to meet each other, to talk to each other, to get to know each other, and to build a foundation for relationships to grow throughout the year. One of the groups that comes is the chinese. What do they bring to the show this year . The chinese are very enthusiastic about this. Time theyhe first came. The russians used to come. But things have changed there, but the chinese are back for the second time. They come with a sizable contingent. They are the Largest Group of ships. Missile destroyer, a brandnew supply ship, a southern rescue ship, and a hospital ship, the ghost too Many International events. Some in congress have been saying for the past two years that we should not be inviting the chinese. We should be punishing them for the aggressive actions they have shown in the pacific. The pentagon disagrees. What are your views. Are generally better military to military than politics would indicate. This is true throughout the world. It really is. There is a shared environment of the sea, of the operating nature. We all love driving ships. There is a different relationship there. We interact with the chinese at sea. Politicians do not neces the army doesnt, the air force doesnt, but we share the seas with the chinese, and both sides feel it is to everybodys advantage to get to know each other and keep the lines of communication open. Andnaval the u. S. Navy the chinese navy feel there is great worth in doing this. Part of what interesting is that on july 12, there will be a south in the hague on the china seas between china and the philippines. This will take place in the middle of our impact exercises, so there may be no impact whatsoever. It would also not be unheard of upset and left. But nobody is anticipating that and nobody thinks that is going to happen. Actually, the chinese have been very positive about the whole experience. Chinese media has been showing ships operating with the u. S. Ships in pearl harbor. China, theeft chinese joined up with them and sailed across the pacific. One place you do not expect to have political issues is new zealand, but they had an impact this year. Can you explain . Lakeshore. Nobody worries about our relations with new zealand. They are friendly. Standpoint, ilitary there has been tension for decades over nuclear weapons. U. S. Ships were banned from new zealand ports if they would not if they had nuclear weapons. We dont carry them anymore. The New Zealanders were not allowed into our ports either. In 2012, the kiwis came, but they were not allowed to birth with everybody else in pearl to tie up iney had a commercial port in honolulu. Company, but they were not allowed, because of politics, to come in to pearl harbor. Return, analysis on the nato summit. You are watching defense news. At for years ive trained dogs for the marines like me, some of these dogs have seen many tours of duty. And for the past 15 years ive been a navy federal member. Thanks to their fast approval process, when it came time to buy a new car, we got everything we needed to transport my wifes little bundle of joy. Who i just adore. Open to the armed forces, the dod and their families. Navy federal credit union. Welcome back to defense news. World leaders will flock to warsaw on july 10 for the nato summit. Leadertly spoke to the of International Security for analysis. This is the mostig at no point has the alliance had to contend with the complexity, urgency, and challenges found on the eastern front. To that end, the alliance is probably going to make decisions to create a new enhanced presence on the eastern frontier. At the core of this will be a battalion in lithuania, latvia, estonia, and poland. A second key challenge for the alliance will have will be how it adjusts its relationships with multiple the and georgia. We must be clear that we will project stability in eastern europe. We do not want to invite russian efforts to impose hegemony. Nato contributes to to help deal with the violence, chaos, and terrorism of the southern frontier. Toward that end, nato is systems,to contribute contribute to the training of shipstroops, contribute and maybe air capabilities to the refugee operations in the. Editerranean the fourth will be operations in the middle east, afghanistan. To see be interesting what they decide regarding libya and whether there will be a nato Security Assistance for the new libyan government. On the battalion issue, that is something poland said they needed. Know why countries are so invested in getting that capability . These countries border russia. They have had a with russia in the past and the soviet union in the past. That they too far ago were occupied, essentially, by the soviet union. They were forced to be part of the warsaw pact. They are very sensitive about their independence and they are very concerned about what they are seeing to the east, russias invasion of georgia, increasing border is a shin borderization. And they have been seeing military action against their own forces. They are concerned about their own security. For poland and the baltics, to have a u. S. Presence on their territory is very reassuring. Poland is looking at the key in manyt as ways. Important do you believe this is for poland . Very important. Ever since Poland Independence in 1989, it has gone for nato membership. It sees nato membership as key to its security. As a nato ally, it wants to be a leader in the alliance. To host a summit like this is a great way to demonstrate that leadership. And i should say that poland should be commended for its alliance to nato missions. At a time when different allies are looking at different fronts, poland has been willing to contribute to all nato efforts. In addition to hosting the u. S. Battalion, which is in some ways to its own benefit, it is contributing a company to the enhanced presence in the balkans. F15s tove teens the sea. It has been there to help with operations in the mediterranean. It has committed forces to the isil coalition. Nato allypoland as a contributing in a 360 degree way. Other countries need to be looking at as models of how nato should operate Going Forward . One of the key challenges of this alliance is to demonstrate unity and a time of great stress, operational stress and challenges on the frontiers. Political stress because of the challenge posed by brexit. Is a key way to demonstrate and underscore alliance unity. It is important for alliances to follow the models of poland and the United States, contribute into all nato operations. I am a little concerned that as the United States is stepping up and contributing forces, it will be sending an armored brigade combat team, another three battalions, to Central Europe in february and march of next year. We are only seeing a limited contribution by our western european allies. It is good the germans are putting an italian putting up, and an italian presence is there. But where are the french . Why arent they putting forces way, or aficant battalion into the baltics, poland, or romania . Where are the spanish, italians, or others . I am afraid this could possibly to a renewedlyst and divisive burden sharing debate. How does brexit fit into that . A lot of what you have heard in European Countries is that traditional european alliances, is this something countries are concerned about . That these alliances might dissolve . I think everyone is concerned about it. The u. K. Vote was a blow against a vision of europe that is increasingly integrated. Nationstates, but that enhances the benefit of all nationstates. To have the u. K. Pullout of that vision is a body blow. Nato, the impact is not immediate and is still undetermined. It will have an effect on market certainty, it has created political unease about the unity of the alliance in the future, but the u. K. Still stands as a full member of nato. Its commitments to nato have not been diminished. The longterm implications of brexit are troubling. Will this lead to other countries exiting from the eu . The u. K. The loss of from the eu decisionmaking affect the perspective of the eu on russia . Will the eu become more inward in the absence of a transatlantic perspective or the the u. K. Brings . That loss could bleed into nato consensus. What if the u. K. Itself divides . That would significantly break up one of natos most important and capable allies. Those would be real setbacks. When we return, a look at how the u. S. Military is responding to soldiers. You are watching defense news. Welcome back to defense news. Last month, there was a major training exercise. Our reporters were on the ground and brought us this report. These soldiers are jumping into the Central African nation of the bone. Gabon. Refi this for roughly 20 hours in the air. For roughly 20 hours in the air and then paratroopers exit over the country ready to go. Years hase series for run command activities and fullblown exercises like this one. It is the largest exercise unit africa has conducted on the continent. The training units, including american troops on the ground, practice readiness for deployment. Theyre all engaging with our partners in working through problems sets, whether it be in the field or in an embassy. The opportunities for Leadership Development in that aspect of readiness you cannot replace. Has said hish army general priority is readiness. Back at fort bragg when we are out loading, the devil is in the details. There is a lot of stuff you dont think about until you get on the plane and start asking questions like who is signing for the parachutes, who is counting them, who is confirming they are loaded up . Nationswith host security forces, has been extremely smooth, but there are always challenges. This is one of the most disciplined countries. They are always motivated. We have never had a problem with discipline or motivation within the platoon. Detail this thing was teaching them the doctrine of the u. N. Na toughest thing was teaching them the doctrine of the u. N. They have their own doctrine. Has a lotrican army of knowledge. We learned a lot from them. I think they also learned from us. I had never worked with cameroonians. I was expecting obstacles, but by the third day, it was as if we were home again. In return, the americans learn jungle tactics and small unit skills. African soldiers learn skills to help them defeat some of their challenges, which are similar to ours. The challenges we have in the threats and fears americans are dealing with are no different, and the opportunities, what we want and what they want are the same for themselves, and for their children. They are worried they are worried about illegal activity. How we work and partner together to address those things can only help all of us. We learned a lot. That will help us advance our army, give us skills, and give us skills to maintain peace and order in our country. That will bring us a lot of development. The goal of the accord series is to meet a variety of training needs. They have a level of objectives. We are providing objectives. We meet in the middle and look at who is participating and at what level of participation. We have had gender integration training, counter ied, Human Trafficking classes, but they tend to go back to Mission Command african partners are very familiar because they are related to the u. N. Peacekeeping missions. Theyre eerily on, they really were not sure what an accord exercise was. Now we have knit a very early on, they were not sure what an accord exercise was. Now we have name recognition for the exercises. We have to manage the number style he sometimes because of funding and resources, but i think we could do it manage the numbers fairly tightly sometimes because of funding and resources, but i think we could do it with larger numbers if we had the money. U. S. Soldiers participating in events like what they are participating in, airborne operations, exercising our , builds uption force readiness across the board for all of our u. S. Young soldiers. Working in an austere environment, working with military they are not accustomed to working with, working in an environment where there is an exchange of ideas. It is a learning environment as well. Open to the armed forces, the dod and their families. Navy federal credit union. Aaron welcome back to defense news. Hurricane hunters are gearing up to track the summers biggest storms. We recently visited the air force and brought back this report. I am at joint base andrews in maryland today. You can see a Hurricane Hunter behind me. Today, we will be flying at about 10,000 feet and doing a drop over the water. Are 10 of these models that belong to the Hurricane Hunters and there are three aircraft that can do missions and fly into different hurricanes or tropical storms simultaneously. Wc 130j isfor a comprised of airmen who go up collect data. In just a reserve crew will be releasing this drop. It falls at about 2. 5 feet per second through the hurricane, collecting two points, temperature, and especially wind speed. I place this in the tube and operate this computer. It collects all sorts of data. The Hurricane Hunters respond to storms in the hawaii from hawaii and the pacific to the Virgin Islands and the caribbean. The crew will fly at a maximum of 10,000 feet, but can get as low as 1000 feet and use meteorological information to plan a mission and gauge danger. We will pick our way through portions of the eye wall that look dangerous as far as flying through with an airplane, and still go through the eye wall but pick a different place to do that. If something does not look a different way to get the data to the forecasters at the hurricane center. Feete models are about 15 the models from 1999 or about 15 feet shorter than the ones currently are about 15 feet shorter than the ones currently off the production line. The biggest difference between the models should be the proficiency or performance of the aircraft itself. We can get higher, fly a little faster, use less fuel. Its more efficient for us. Theres a lot less to worry about with the aircraft is health. It reduces the workload for the crew itself. Aircraft it self. It reduces the workload for the crew itself. It performance, fuel if fuelay overall workload enhances the cruise capability. Traditionally, i was a gunship pilot. I recently transitioned over to the weather bird. Roughly a year ago. Between theerences a c130 and 130, a big change in have 1315 guys versus five guys you command on the weather line. The missions are little different. On the gunship, we support the ground troops. Its exciting. You are supporting those guys. Same thing in the weather bird. Once you get to the storm environment, you have to worry about the safety of the crew, safety of the aircraft, making sure you get everybody back in one piece. Same thing in combat, taking the crew out and getting them to the objective area. The c Hurricane Season in the coming months.
