Then comes the rain. Michelle we pay for it. Steve the rain held off for the most part. End of the day, a different story in Southern Maryland and delmarva beaches where it has been cloudy and foggy and rainy. Let me start off with a picture from gaithersburg high school. One of the viewers sent this in. Hundreds of flags on the school property. Pretty cool out there. Folks are enjoying themselves and remembering the true meaning of what memorial day is all about. The picture behind is ocean city, maryland. Definitely not ady to catch rays because it has been foggy. Its wet. The temperatures are well below average. Thankfully next weekend looking ahead it is looking brighter for the beaches. Temperatures outside right now 81 degrees at manassas. 81 in culpeper. Upper 70s inside the beltway. 73 in Southern Maryland. Temperatures are cooler. The further south you go. That is because the rain has been steady throughout the day. Widen things out a little bit. Summertime has arrived. 90 in nashville. 81 in charleston. For those of you with relatives to the west of us it is looking beautiful out there for the next several days. Cold front over here. Number one for the week. We have two more on the way after that. The final one late friday. That may stick around for part of the upcoming weekend. Still looking at what is now the remnants of bonnie bringing lots and lots of moisture inland to South Carolina and southern north carolina. This is moving north and east. That is why we are going to keep unsettled weather in the forecast. Not only for this evening but by no means are we talking about washout for the immediate metro area. Speaking of the heavier rain across the delmarva beaches. Ocean city. Rehoboth beach, bethesda. This is lifting off to the north and east. Heading further south of us. That is where we are looking at the moderate rain at this time. Around the capital beltway, a few showers right now. Very, very light. Look out the window in rosslyn. We have sunshine. Not the case north and west of us. Hagerstown area. The outlet mall with the light shower activity. Embedded thunderstorm. May look at the heavier downpour but not looking for anything to become severe. Not as we move through the everything hours and into the overnight. Heading closer inside the beltway. Bar cue plans. Chevy chase, rockville, bethesda, college park. Looking at a few showers headed through the everything. A few popup thunderstorms that may bring us isolated thunderstorms. Downpours i should say. 62 to 68 degrees for we may see patchy fog. Shouldnt amount to a lot. Not close in. Future cast looks like this moving through the day tomorrow. Grab an umbrella as you head out the door. You may need it. More than likely you wont need it. 30 chance for those showers. Maybe a popup thunderstorm. Not looking for anything to become severe. Highs tomorrow will be in the middle to the upper 80s. Partly sunny skies. We look at the next seven days we have unsettled weather thursday, friday and saturday. It depends on the timing of a cold front on friday. Whether or not it stalls just south of us. If it does that means unsettled weather for the delmarva beaches next weekend. Its only monday. A lot can change between now and then. We will put the spell on it to get it out of here so we have a nice weekend next weekend. Jonathan cross our fingers. Thanks. Jonathan a 17yearold western lowland gorilla appears to be dragging the 4yearold boy that got in his enclosure around. Some say the gorilla is protecting the boy. This is a big strong animal that could clearly hurt him but didnt look like he was. Zookeepers shot and killed the animal after that boy got into the enclosure on saturday. Two hours ago the cincinnati zoo held a News Conference defending that decision saying the boys life was in danger. As mike carterconneen reports, Animal Rights activists are outraged by the gorillas death. Momma is right here. Mike weighing more than 400 pounds, harambe the gorilla appears agitated from the desperate to help a 4yearold boy who climbed in the exhibit. I feel bad for the governorry la. I was devastating when i heard they had to euthanize the animal. I was shocked. Mike while this happened in cincinnati in washington today, at the national zoo, many visitors could be overheard discussing even debating how the situation was handled. Once it happens when you have a kid in there with a wild gorilla i dont think they had a different choice. If it was your kid, how would you feel . I dont understand why they didnt tranquilize the gorilla. Mike today, jack hannah defended the actions saying the tranquilizer might have agitated the gorilla more. What will he do . Jump like you would like anybody. Jump like this, with the power the animal has its beyond comprehension. They had to do something quickly. The dart takes too long. The child wouldnt have a chance. Mike some question the zoos design by the zoo argues safety barrier is adequate. P. E. T. A. Says this demonstrates why primates shouldnt in captivity. It makes me sad they are put in here. Mike many blame the boys parents calling for accountability. I wish parents would hold to the kids at the zoo. Mike after ten minutes he was rescued surviving with a concussion and a few scrapes. Mike carterconneen, abc7 news. Jonathan so far the boys parents have not been criminally charged related to the incident but we are told it could change. Michelle there is so much blame to go around to a lot of people here. Jonathan you understand as parents you turn your back and if you have a couple of kids and one you get that. How in the world can a 4yearold climb into a gorilla enclosure . A lot of people are at a loss on that one. Michelle a lot of questions. We will stay on top of this one. Vo for dominion, part of delivering Affordable Energy includes supporting those in our community who need help. Our Energyshare Program does just that, assisting with bill pay and providing free, energysaving upgrades. Its more than helping customers, its helping neighbors. Stand by me jonathan okay. Be honest. You wont find many riders of metro that dont seem to have complaints about the system. Its a system that is in a bit of disarray if you consider a couple of things. Years of loaf funding and lack of repairs. That never makes for a good equation. This guy, Paul Wiedefeld is six months into his job as general manager. Transportation reporter Brianne Carter spoke with him about what he is doing to try and turn everything around. To me this is the best job i have ever had. Brianne he says it has been rewarding but also challenging job. Since he first walked in the office he battled a blizzard on the track, schultz down a system for inspections and fired nearly two dozen employees. Through it all what has been the most surprising moment . I have had a few of them. Clearly just some of the challenges we face. I knew that there were a lot of damages but maybe the depth of them were surprising. Brianne one of the challenges surrounds two words we hear so often when referring to metro. Safety culture. Its like marriage. Its every day. Its not something that you say i got a great marriage. Everything is done. You move on. That is not the way it works. That is not the way the culture of a Big Organization works. Every day we have to work on it. Brianne one thing we wanted to know what is the most memorable moments over the past six months for the new g. M. He says he has had two. Both good and bad. Wiedefeld says the indifference or lack of speed to handle what he called total chaos on the track was an ahha moment one early moment. He said the other happened when meeting with a station manager. It him. He could have told me i need money, i need timeoff, whatever. That is not what he said. He brought up a Customer Experience that he felt that we werent addressing. So that just gave me, you know, that gave me chills. Brianne now days away from a year of single tracking and shut downs, does wiedefeld feel like he isnt the right person for this job . It might surprise you but im not the person for this job. Its all of us is the person for this job. If anyone thinks that i can do this job there is just no way. There is just no way. I need 193,000 people to be with me. Brianne in northwest washington, Brianne Carter, abc7 news. Jonathan today metro is operating on sunday schedule for the memorial day holiday. Michelle to keep your family safe, experts say inspect Electrical Equipment at pools, docks, boats, marinas at least once a year. Jonathan wrong turn left a virginia couple off the beaten path. Above my belly button. [laughter] michelle it was over as fast as it began. Whatever she was choking on flew out.
