With the folks in town. One area of moderate to heavy rain is moving through the metro area now. Another batch is coming in later tonight. Severe thunderstorm watch over kentucky and parts of west virginia. It might just work out that we get the little bit of a break. If it doesnt end totally, it might diminish enough to get the fireworks in fine. Here is where we are at the moment. Heavy downpours across the district. Just over the city in the north, heavy downpours. Lets zoom in closer now and take you right down to nearly street level where we have rain falling on the mall. We have heavy rain at that. The areas in orange are moving east. We do think we will have a break. Here is how it will go. Mild and muggy. About 70 to the low 70s. Isolated showers later tonight and maybe thunderstorms with the next batch. But the in between time, 8 30, 9 30 to 10 00 we still have a chance of having a break from the rain. I just saw sam sweeney on the mall a minute ago. Im looking at that hood and thinking you are not getting a break from rain right now, you, brother . Sam it just moved in, in the last 15, 20 minutes or so. Not a lot of people happy with your forecast. We have diehard people here on the mall. They are waving to us. They are happy, cheering. A ton of people are already out here. It doesnt look like it but they are on the other side of the Washington Monument there. You can see these people, they have been out here for hours. As of right now the top of the 4 00 hour, the show goes on tonight at 9 09. National park and the park police say they cant remember a time when they had to cancel the fireworks here on the National Mall for the last 25 years. They are hoping not to cancel it tonight. The only way they would cancel it, were told, if very strong storms come through, lightning or high winds. That is the only way they would cancel it. If there are already people out here, and we expect and the sort of storm moves in, they have a backup plan. They would evacuate people to the nearby museums. We are keeping it positive here and thinking happy thoughts. Lot of people out here for much of the day. They are echoing the same message. I love it. Awesome. Getting wet, but i love it. I cried when i seen the white house. Is the rain going to get you down . No. Im going to stay right here and wait for the fireworks. Im ready. A little bit of a damper. I like that everybody is still out here and have the gear on. Taking pictures. Theyre troopers. Cooler weather. Fewer crowds. Its a winwin. Remember, if you are coming out here, a couple of housekeeping rules. No Glass Containers on the mall, no alcohol, no tents. This is a no drone zone. They know we had a lot of people that want the perfect fireworks picture. Leave your drones at home. Jonathan, michelle, one more rule. No marijuana on the mall tonight. So leave it at home. Back to you inside. Michelle all right, sam. Thank you. As we await final word on the National Mall, some towns have already made the de postpone. Jonathan this is heartbreaking. They are tweeting that the fireworks are still scheduled to begin at 9 09 p. M. On the National Mall this evening. Now, on to the towns in maryland that are changing their plans. The first to postpone is college park. Display on campus at the university of maryland has been moved to tomorrow night at 9 00. Greenbelt, maryland, doing the same thing. Gaithersburg moved their activities inside. But the fireworks will take place on friday night, weather permitting. You will be forced to open up any bag, coolers and anything you have with you to go along with what sam said. You not allowed to bring in weapons. No alcohol or fireworks. On top of the local Police Agencies the d. C. National guard is out here. E. M. T. s and hundreds of volunteers. Officials say they did make some minor changes after the recent terror attacks. Everyone we spoke to says they welcome the heightened sense of security. We are glad its here. We feel safe. We love it. I feel calm and safe in d. C.
